A unified framework for 21cm tomography sample generation and parameter inference with Progressively Growing GANs

Creating a database of 21cm brightness temperature signals from the Epoch of Reionisation (EoR) for an array of reionisation histories is a complex and computationally expensive task, given the range of astrophysical processes involved and the possibly high-dimensional parameter space that is to be probed. We utilise a specific type of neural network, a Progressively Growing Generative Adversarial Network (PGGAN), to produce realistic tomography images of the 21cm brightness temperature during the EoR, covering a continuous three-dimensional parameter space that models varying X-ray emissivity, Lyman band emissivity, and ratio between hard and soft X-rays. The GPU-trained network generates new samples at a resolution of $\sim 3'$ in a second (on a laptop CPU), and the resulting global 21cm signal, power spectrum, and pixel distribution function agree well with those of the training data, taken from the 21SSD catalogue \citep{Semelin2017}. Finally, we showcase how a trained PGGAN can be leveraged for the converse task of inferring parameters from 21cm tomography samples via Approximate Bayesian Computation.

A black box for dark sector physics: Predicting dark matter annihilation feedback with conditional GANs

Traditionally, incorporating additional physics into existing cosmological simulations requires re-running the cosmological simulation code, which can be computationally expensive. We show that conditional Generative Adversarial Networks (cGANs) can be harnessed to predict how changing the underlying physics alters the simulation results. To illustrate this, we train a cGAN to learn the impact of dark matter annihilation feedback (DMAF) on the gas density distribution. The predicted gas density slices are visually difficult to distinguish from their real brethren and the peak counts differ by less than 10 per cent for all test samples (the average deviation is < 3 per cent). Finally, we invert the problem and show that cGANs are capable of endowing smooth density distributions with realistic substructure. The cGAN does however have difficulty generating new knots as well as creating/eliminating bubble-like structures. We conclude that trained cGANs can be an effective approach to provide mock samples of cosmological simulations incorporating DMAF physics from existing samples of standard cosmological simulations of the evolution of cosmic structure.

A Novel Scheme for Dark Matter Annihilation Feedback in Cosmological Simulations

We present a new self-consistent method for incorporating dark matter annihilation feedback (DMAF) in cosmological N-body simulations. The power generated by DMAF is evaluated at each dark matter (DM) particle which allows for flexible energy injection into the surrounding gas based on the specific DM annihilation model under consideration. Adaptive, individual time steps for gas and DM particles are supported and a new time-step limiter, derived from the propagation of a Sedov--Taylor blast wave, is introduced. We compare this donor-based approach with a receiver-based approach used in recent studies and illustrate the differences by means of a toy example. Furthermore, we consider an isolated halo and a cosmological simulation and show that for these realistic cases, both methods agree well with each other. The extension of our implementation to scenarios such as non-local energy injection, velocity-dependent annihilation cross-sections, and DM decay is straightforward.

Upscaling of unsaturated flow in fractured porous media

In this work, we consider a mathematical model for flow in a unsaturated porous medium containing a fracture. In all subdomains (the fracture and the adjacent matrix blocks) the flow is governed by Richards' equation. The submodels are coupled by physical transmission conditions expressing the continuity of the normal fluxes and of the pressures. We start by analyzing the case of a fracture having a fixed width-length ratio, called $\varepsilon > 0$. Then we take the limit $\varepsilon \to 0$ and give a rigorous proof for the convergence towards effective models. This is done in different regimes, depending on how the ratio of porosities and permeabilities in the fracture, respectively matrix scale with respect to $\varepsilon$, and leads to a variety of effective models. Numerical simulations confirm the theoretical upscaling results.

A study on iterative methods for solving Richards` equation

This work concerns linearization methods for efficiently solving the Richards` equation,a degenerate elliptic-parabolic equation which models flow in saturated/unsaturated porous media. The discretization of Richards` equation is based on backward Euler in time and Galerkin finite el-ements in space. The most valuable linearization schemes for Richards` equation, i.e. the Newtonmethod, the Picard method, the Picard/Newton method and theLscheme are presented and theirperformance is comparatively studied. The convergence, the computational time and the conditionnumbers for the underlying linear systems are recorded. The convergence of theLscheme is theo-retically proved and the convergence of the other methods is discussed. A new scheme is proposed,theLscheme/Newton method which is more robust and quadratically convergent. The linearizationmethods are tested on illustrative numerical examples.
