Light scalars in light of UV/IR mixing: classicalization via synergy between Vainshtein and chameleon screenings

Effective field theories featuring light scalar fields play a pivotal role in addressing fundamental questions in (astro)particle physics and cosmology. However, such theories often confront hierarchy problems in the absence of a symmetry. Self-completion via classicalization offers a non-Wilsonian approach to ultraviolet (UV) completion, wherein new scalar self-interactions involving derivatives give rise to Vainshtein-like screening around energy-momentum sources. Rather than introducing new UV degrees of freedom to restore unitarity at high energies, these theories reshuffle their infrared (IR) degrees of freedom by generating extended semi-classical objects -- referred to as classicalons -- which decay into a multitude of soft particles. This mechanism incorporates non-localizable fields, thereby realizing a form of UV/IR mixing that is analogous to the dynamics of black holes in gravitational theories. In this article, having reviewed the fundamental principles of classicalization with a simple k-essence model, we then argue the necessity of maintaining a little hierarchy between the scalar mass and the scale of the first new resonances, thereby illustrating the impact of UV/IR mixing on hierarchy problems. Additionally, we investigate the effects of a scalar potential and couplings to fermions on the Vainshtein screening mechanism. We discuss that a chameleon-like screening mechanism must accompany the Vainshtein screening to preserve the integrity of classicalon solutions.

The Two Scales of New Physics in Loop-Induced Higgs Couplings

Probing new physics through precise measurements of Higgs boson couplings is a central objective of the particle collider program at the high-energy frontier. An anomaly in Higgs couplings induced solely by new fermions allows one to compute an upper bound on the mass scale of new bosons. This new bosonic scale is necessary to prevent Landau poles or vacuum instability. Consequently, a single anomalous measurement can provide insight into two distinct new physics scales. In this article, we apply this approach to the loop-induced couplings of the Higgs boson to digluons ($gg$), diphotons ($γγ$), and $Z γ$, and we compare our results to the projected sensitivities of the HL-LHC and future lepton colliders. This work naturally extends our previous analysis of Higgs couplings to weak dibosons ($WW$ and $ZZ$).

Ghost-free Electroweak Symmetry Breaking with Weakly Nonlocal Interactions

Weakly nonlocal (WNL) Quantum Field Theories (QFT's) may define a new class of UV-completions in particle physics and gravity, without introducing any new elementary particle. One problematic issue is how to realize spontaneous symmetry breaking without introducing an infinite tower of ghosts in the perturbative spectrum. In this article, a WNL extension of the Standard Model (SM) is proposed: the Fuzzy Standard Model (FSM). It is a smooth deformation of the SM based on covariant star-products of fields. This new formalism realizes electroweak symmetry breaking without ghosts at tree-level. We give evidences that the FSM exhibits Vainshtein screening, aka classicalization, in the deep-UV. This could solve the electroweak hierarchy problem if it occurs at the TeV-scale.

Exorcizing Ghosts from the Vacuum Spectra in String-inspired Nonlocal Tachyon Condensation

Tachyon condensation in quantum field theory (QFT) plays a central role in models of fundamental interactions and cosmology. Inspired by tower truncation in string field theory, ultraviolet completions were proposed with infinite-derivative form factors that preclude the appearance of pathological ghosts in the particle spectrum, contrary to other local higher-derivative QFT's. However, if the infinite-derivative QFT exhibits other vacua, each of them has its own spectrum, which is generally not ghost-free: an infinite tower of ghost-like resonances pops up above the nonlocal scale at tree-level, whose consistency is unclear. In this article, a new weakly nonlocal deformation of a generic local QFT is introduced via a Lorentz and gauge covariant star-product of fields, which is commutative but nonassociative in general. This framework realizes tachyon condensation without ghosts at the perturbative level, with applications for spontaneous symmetry breaking.

The Two Scales of New Physics in Higgs Couplings

Higgs coupling deviations from Standard Model predictions contain information about two scales of Nature: that of new physics responsible for the deviation, and the scale where new bosons must appear. The two can coincide, but they do not have to. The scale of new bosons can be calculated by going beyond an effective field theory description of the coupling deviation. We compute model-independent upper bounds on the scale of new bosons for deviations in Higgs to $WW$ and $ZZ$ couplings, finding that any measured deviation at present or future colliders requires the existence of new bosons within experimental reach. This has potentially interesting implications for naturalness.

Extra Dimensions and Fuzzy Branes in String-inspired Nonlocal Field Theory

Particle physics models with extra dimensions of space (EDS's) and branes shed new light on electroweak and flavor hierarchies with a rich TeV scale phenomenology. This article highlights new model building issues with EDS's and branes, arising in the framework of weakly nonlocal field theories. It is shown that a brane-localized field is still delocalized in the bulk on a small distance from the brane position: fields localized on such distant fuzzy branes are thus allowed to interact directly with suppressed couplings. Directions for model building are also given: (i) with fuzzy branes, a new realization of split fermions in an EDS is presented, naturally generating flavor hierarchies; (ii) with a warped EDS, the usual warp transmutation of a brane-localized mass term is revisited, where it is shown that the nonlocal scale is also redshifted and provides a smooth UV cutoff for the Higgs boson mass. This framework is expected to have natural UV completions in string theory, but the possibility to embed it in recent UV complete weakly nonlocal quantum field theories is commented.

Fate of the false vacuum in string-inspired nonlocal field theory

In this article, we study Coleman bounce in weakly nonlocal theories which are motivated from string field theory. The kinetic term is extended via an infinite series of high-order derivatives, which comes into play at an energy scale $M$, without introducing any new states or ghosts in the mass spectrum. We calculate the bubble nucleation in thin-wall approximation, treating the system in semi-classical manner. We find that the effect of nonlocal scale $M$ in the theory is to suppress the vacuum tunneling rate from false to true vacuum compared to the standard local bouncing scenario. Likewise, we show that as we move further away from the bubble wall, the effects of nonlocality gets reduced and this suppression is significant only around the wall of the nucleated bubble. From our investigations, we conclude that the main effect is due to the fact that the nonlocality smears the solution of the local bubble profile. However, the energy of the bubble wall remains unaffected by the microscopic nonlocal behavior of the theory in the thin-wall approximation. We also discuss the cases for Lee-Wick theories and applications of our result to cosmology.

Comment on "Braneworld Effective Field Theories -- Holography, Consistency and Conformal Effects"

Several arguments given in arXiv:1912.12316 suggest that braneworld effective models with fields strictly localized on $δ$-like branes cannot be UV-completed by a fundamental theory including gravity, i.e. they belong to the Swampland. It is concluded that one should instead only consider models with quasilocalized zero-modes of higher-dimensional fields. In this comment, the arguments are critically reviewed, and various loopholes are proposed. Beyond that, the main point that is discussed is the notion of effective brane form factors, which are required when the singular behavior of the branes is softened in the UV-completion.

Large Star/Rose Extra Dimension with Small Leaves/Petals

In this paper, we propose to compactify a single large extra dimension (LED) on a star/rose graph with a large number of identical leaves/petals. The 5D Planck scale can be chosen to be $Λ_P^{(5)} \sim \mathcal{O}(1)$ TeV which can provide a path to solve the gauge hierarchy problem. The leaf/petal length scale is of $\mathcal{O}(1/Λ_{EW})$, where $Λ_{EW} \sim 100$ GeV is the weak scale, without the large geometrical hierarchy of the traditional LED models to stabilize. The 4D fields of the SM are localized on a 3-brane at the central vertex of the star/rose graph. We predict a tower of feebly coupled weak scale Kaluza-Klein (KK) gravitons below a regime of strongly coupled gravitational phenomena above the TeV scale. Moreover, we reformulate in our setup the LED mechanism to generate light Dirac neutrinos, where the right-handed neutrinos are KK-modes of gauge singlet fermions propagating in the bulk. A large number of KK-gravitons and KK-neutrinos interact only gravitationally, and thus constitute a hidden sector.

Rigorous treatment of the $\mathcal{S}^1 / \mathbb{Z}_2$ orbifold model with brane-Higgs couplings

We build rigorously the attractive five-dimensional model where bulk fermions propagate along the $ \mathcal{S}^1 / \mathbb{Z}_2$ orbifold and interact with a Higgs boson localised at a fixed point of the extra dimension. The analytical calculation of the fermion mass spectrum and effective Yukawa couplings is shown to require the introduction of either Essential Boundary Conditions (EBC) imposed by the model definition or certain Bilinear Brane Terms (BBT) in the action, instead of the usual brane-Higgs regularisations. The obtained fermion profiles along the extra dimension turn out to undergo some discontinuities, in particular at the Higgs brane, which can be mathematically consistent if the action is well written with improper integrals. We also show that the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ parity transformations in the bulk do not affect the fermion chiralities, masses and couplings, in contrast with the EBC and BBT, but when extended to the fixed points, they can generate the chiral nature of the theory and even select the Standard Model chirality set-up while fixing as well the fermion masses and couplings. Thanks to the strict analysis developed, the duality with the interval model is scrutinised.

Compactified Spacelike Extra Dimension & Brane-Higgs Field

In the paradigm with a small warped Spacelike Extra Dimensions (SED), the Higgs field is in general localized at a boundary of the SED (TeV-brane) where the gravity scale is redshifted to the TeV by a warp factor. If the SM gauge bosons and fermions propagate into the warped SED, one can generate the mass hierarchy for fermions. It is thus crucial to treat carefully the TeV-brane localized masses for such fermions, which is done in the literature by applying a regularization process suffering from a lack of consistency and more importantly being useless, as we demonstrate in detail in the present thesis. The first part of the thesis is devoted to the treatment of brane localized mass terms for 5D fermions, which requires the introduction of new Lagrangian terms at the SED boundaries, similar to the Gibbons-Hawking terms in gravity. The second part consists in applying different methods (function/distribution fields, 4D/5D calculations, etc) to various brane localized terms (kinetic terms, Majorana masses, etc), as well as a generalization to several classified models (flat/warped dimensions, intervalle/orbifold, etc). In the third part, we propose to compactify a flat SED on a star/rose graph with a large number of identical small leaves/petals. We obtain a compactified space with a large volume without a large compactification length to stabilize. We use the approach of 5D fermions to build a toy model of small Dirac neutrino masses (brane localized left-handed neutrinos and bulk right-handed ones).

Beyond brane-Higgs regularisation: clarifying the method and model

The class of higher-dimensional scenarios, based on a brane-localised Higgs boson coupled to bulk fermions, can address both the flavour puzzle and gauge hierarchy problem. A key question arises due to the possibility of fermion profile discontinuities at the Higgs boundary: how to calculate rigorously the fermion mass spectrum and effective four-dimensional (4D) Yukawa couplings? We show that the proper treatment, leading to physically consistent solutions, does not rely on any Higgs peak regularisation but requires the presence of certain Bilinear Brane Terms (BBT). In particular, no profile jump should appear and the Higgs regularisations turn out to suffer from mathematical discrepancies reflected in two non-commutativities of calculation steps debated in the literature. The introduction of BBT can by replaced by vanishing conditions for probability currents at the considered flat interval boundaries. Both contribute to the definition of the field geometrical configuration of the model, even in the free case. The BBT could allow to elaborate an ultra-violet origin of the chiral nature of the Standard Model and of its chirality distribution among quarks/leptons. The current conditions are implemented via essential boundary conditions to be contrasted with the natural boundary conditions derived from the action variation. All these theoretical conclusions are confirmed in particular by the converging exact results of the 4D versus 5D approaches. The analysis is completed by a description of the appropriate energy cut-off procedure. The new calculation methods presented, implying the independence of excited fermion masses and 4D Yukawa couplings on the 'wrong-chirality' Yukawa terms, have impacts on phenomenological results like the relaxing of previously obtained strong bounds on Kaluza-Klein masses induced by flavour changing reactions generated through exchanges of the Higgs field.
