Compact and efficient quantum frequency conversion of a fiber-pigtailed single-photon source

Quantum frequency converters are key enabling technologies in photonic quantum information science to bridge the gap between quantum emitters and telecom photons. Here, we report a coherent frequency converter scheme combining a fiber-coupled nonlinear optical Lithium Niobate waveguide with a fiber-pigtailed single-photon source based on semiconductor quantum dots. Single and indistinguishable photons are converted from 925.7 nm to the telecommunication C-band, with a 48.4% end-to-end efficiency and full preservation of single-photon purity and indistinguishability. The integration of the two fiber-based modules achieving top-level performance represents an important step toward the practical interconnection of future quantum information processing systems operating at different wavelengths.

Efficient fiber-pigtailed source of indistinguishable single photons

Semiconductor quantum dots in microcavities are an excellent platform for the efficient generation of indistinguishable single photons. However, their use in a wide range of quantum technologies requires their controlled fabrication and integration in compact closed-cycle cryocoolers, with a key challenge being the efficient and stable extraction of the single photons into a single-mode fiber. Here we report on a novel method for fiber-pigtailing of deterministically fabricated single-photon sources. Our technique allows for nanometer-scale alignment accuracy between the source and a fiber, alignment that persists all the way from room temperature to 2.4 K. We demonstrate high performance of the device under near-resonant optical excitation with g$^{(2)}$(0) = 1.3 %, a photon indistinguishability of 97.5 % and a fibered brightness of 20.8 %. We show that the indistinguishability and single-photon rate are stable for over ten hours of continuous operation in a single cooldown. We further confirm that the device performance is not degraded by nine successive cooldown-warmup cycles.

Brillouin Scattering Selection Rules in Polarization-Sensitive Photonic Resonators

The selection rules governing spontaneous Brillouin scattering in crystalline solids are usually taken as intrinsic material properties, locking the relative polarization of excitation and signal in bulk. In this work, we independently manipulate these polarization states by means of optical resonances in elliptical micropillars and demonstrate a polarization-based filtering scheme for Brillouin spectroscopy in the 20-100 GHz range, important for telecom applications. This strong modification of selection rules using elliptical micropillars can be extended to any optical system with localized, polarization-sensitive modes, such as plasmonic resonators, photonic crystals, birefringent micro-, and nanostructures. Our polarization control protocol will thus find applications in the engineering of light-matter interactions in optomechanical, optoelectronic and quantum optics devices.
