Elliptic equations with Hardy potentials and gradient-dependent absorption: existence and refined asymptotics

Under sharp conditions, we prove the existence and refined asymptotic behaviour near zero (resp., at infinity) for all positive radial solutions to elliptic equations such as \begin{equation}\label{eq11} \tag{*} \mathbb L_{ρ,λ}(u)=Δu+ (2-N-2ρ)\, \frac{x\cdot \nabla u}{|x|^2}+ \fracλ{|x|^2}u=|x|^θ\,u^q\, |\nabla u|^m\quad \mbox{in } Ω\setminus\{0\}, \end{equation} where $Ω=B_R(0)$ (resp., $Ω=\mathbb R^{N}\setminus B_{1/R}(0)$) for $R>0$ and $N\geq 2$. The dynamics of such solutions is very rich since $ρ, λ,θ\in \mathbb R$ are arbitrary, $ m>0$, $q\geq 0$ and $κ:=m+q-1>0$. To our knowledge, this is the first study of the local properties of the positive solutions of \eqref{eq11} with arbitrary $m>0$ and $λ\not=0$. We identify all profiles near zero (and at infinity via a modified Kelvin transform) under optimal conditions, depending on how $Θ:=(θ+2-m)/κ$ relates to $0$ or the roots $Θ_\pm$ of $t^2+2ρt+λ$ when $λ\leq ρ^2$. For each profile, we advance new methods that unearth the higher order terms in the asymptotic expansion. We highlight two new asymptotic profiles near zero due to the competition between the Hardy potential with $λ>0$ and the gradient-dependent absorption: (i) a blow-up profile $\left[ λ\left( \fracκ{m} \right)^m \right]^{\frac{1}κ} | \log |x||^{\frac{m}κ} $ if $Θ=0$ and (ii) a bounded profile if $Θ<0$. Any radial solution of \eqref{eq11} with $\lim_{r\to 0^+} u(r)=γ\in \mathbb R_+$ satisfies $(P_\pm)$ $u(r)=γ\pm λ^{1/m} γ^{1-κ/m} (1/σ)\, r^σ(1+o(1))$ as $r\to 0^+$, where $σ=-κΘ/m$. For any $γ\in \mathbb R_+$, there is $R>0$ such that \eqref{eq11} has a radial solution (infinitely many) satisfying $(P_-)$ ($(P_+)$).

Classification and symmetry of global solutions for nonlinear elliptic equations with mixed reaction terms

In this paper, we describe the set of all positive distributional $C^1(\mathbb R^N\setminus \{0\})$-solutions of elliptic equations with mixed reaction terms of the form $$ \mathbb L_{ρ,λ,τ}[u]:= Δu-(N-2+2ρ) \frac{x\cdot \nabla u}{|x|^2} +λ\frac{u^τ|\nabla u|^{1-τ}}{|x|^{1+τ}}=|x|^θu^q\quad \mbox{in } \mathbb R^N\setminus \{0\}, $$ where $ρ,λ, θ\in \mathbb R$ are arbitrary, $N\geq 2$, $q>1$ and $τ\in [0,1)$. Defining $β=(θ+2)/(q-1)$ and $f_{ρ,λ,τ}(t)=t\left(t+2ρ\right) +λ|t|^{1-τ}$ for $t\in \mathbb R$, we show that the equation has positive solutions if and only if $f_{ρ,λ,τ}(β)>0$. Under this condition, we provide existence and the exact asymptotic behaviour near zero and at infinity for all positive solutions. We obtain that all such solutions are radially symmetric. When $θ<-2$ and $ρ,λ\in \mathbb R$, we also find the precise local behaviour near zero for all positive solutions of our equation in $Ω\setminus \{0\}$, where $Ω$ is an open set containing $0$. By introducing the second term in $\mathbb L_{ρ,λ,τ}[\cdot]$ with $ρ\in \mathbb R$, we reduce the study to $θ<-2$ via a modified Kelvin transform. We reveal new and surprising phenomena compared with the work of C\^ırstea and Fărcăşeanu (2021), where $ρ=(2-N)/2$ and $τ=1$.

Singular anisotropic elliptic equations with gradient-dependent lower order terms

We prove the existence of a solution to a singular anisotropic elliptic equation in a bounded open subset $Ω$ of $\mathbb R^N$ with $N\ge 2$, subject to a homogeneous boundary condition: \begin{equation} \label{eq0} \left\{ \begin{array}{ll} \mathcal A u+ Φ(u,\nabla u)=Ψ(u,\nabla u)+ \mathfrak{B} u \quad& \mbox{in } Ω,\\ u=0 & \mbox{on } \partialΩ. \end{array} \right. \end{equation} Here $ \mathcal A u=-\sum_{j=1}^N |\partial_j u|^{p_j-2}\partial_j u$ is the anisotropic $\overrightarrow{p}$-Laplace operator, while $\mathfrak B$ is an operator from $W_0^{1,\overrightarrow{p}}(Ω)$ into $W^{-1,\overrightarrow{p}'}(Ω)$ satisfying suitable, but general, structural assumptions. $Φ$ and $Ψ$ are gradient-dependent nonlinearities whose models are the following: \begin{equation*} \label{phi}Φ(u,\nabla u):=\left(\sum_{j=1}^N \mathfrak{a}_j |\partial_j u|^{p_j}+1\right)|u|^{m-2}u, \quad Ψ(u,\nabla u):=\frac{1}{u}\sum_{j=1}^N |u|^{θ_j} |\partial_j u|^{q_j}. \end{equation*} We suppose throughout that, for every $1\leq j\leq N$, \begin{equation*}\label{ass} \mathfrak{a}_j\geq 0, \quad θ_j>0, \quad 0\leq q_j<p_j, \quad 1<p_j,m\quad \mbox{and}\quad p<N, \end{equation*} and we distinguish two cases: 1) for every $1\leq j\leq N$, we have $θ_j\geq 1$; 2) there exists $1\leq j\leq N$ such that $θ_j<1$. In this last situation, we look for non-negative solutions of \eqref{eq0}.

Anisotropic elliptic equations with gradient-dependent lower order terms and $L^1$ data

We prove the existence of a weak solution for a general class of Dirichlet anisotropic elliptic problems such as $\mathcal Au+Φ(x,u,\nabla u)=\mathfrak{B}u+f$ in $Ω$, where $Ω$ is a bounded open subset of $\mathbb R^N$ and $f\in L^1(Ω)$ is arbitrary. The principal part is a divergence-form nonlinear anisotropic operator $\mathcal A$, the prototype of which is $\mathcal A u=-\sum_{j=1}^N \partial_j(|\partial_j u|^{p_j-2}\partial_j u)$ with $p_j>1$ for all $1\leq j\leq N$ and $\sum_{j=1}^N (1/p_j)>1$. As a novelty in this paper, our lower order terms involve a new class of operators $\mathfrak B$ such that $\mathcal{A}-\mathfrak{B}$ is bounded, coercive and pseudo-monotone from $W_0^{1,\overrightarrow{p}}(Ω)$ into its dual, as well as a gradient-dependent nonlinearity $Φ$ with an "anisotropic natural growth" in the gradient and a good sign condition.

Sharp existence and classification results for nonlinear elliptic equations in $\mathbb R^N\setminus\{0\}$ with Hardy potential

For $N\geq 3$, by the seminal paper of Brezis and Véron (Arch. Rational Mech. Anal. 75(1):1--6, 1980/81), no positive solutions of $-Δu+u^q=0$ in $\mathbb R^N\setminus \{0\}$ exist if $q\geq N/(N-2)$; for $1 1$ and $θ\in \mathbb R$, we prove that the nonlinear elliptic problem (*) $-Δu-λ\,|x|^{-2}\,u+|x|^θu^q=0$ in $\mathbb R^N\setminus \{0\}$ with $u>0$ has a $C^1(\mathbb R^N\setminus \{0\})$ solution if and only if $λ>λ^*$, where $λ^*=Θ(N-2-Θ) $ with $Θ=(θ+2)/(q-1)$. We show that (a) if $λ>(N-2)^2/4$, then $U_0(x)=(λ-λ^*)^{1/(q-1)}|x|^{-Θ}$ is the only solution of (*) and (b) if $λ^*<λ\leq (N-2)^2/4$, then all solutions of (*) are radially symmetric and their total set is $U_0\cup \{U_{γ,q,λ}:\ γ\in (0,\infty) \}$. We give the precise behavior of $ U_{γ,q,λ}$ near zero and at infinity, distinguishing between $1 \max\{q_{N,θ},1\}$, where $q_{N,θ}=(N+2θ+2)/(N-2)$. In addition, for $θ\leq -2$ we settle the structure of the set of all positive solutions of (*) in $Ω\setminus \{0\}$, subject to $u|_{\partialΩ}=0$, where $Ω$ is a smooth bounded domain containing zero, complementing the works of C\^ırstea (Mem. Amer. Math. Soc. 227, 2014) and Wei--Du (J. Differential Equations 262(7):3864--3886, 2017).

Proofs of Urysohn's Lemma and the Tietze Extension Theorem via the Cantor function

Urysohn's Lemma is a crucial property of normal spaces that deals with separation of closed sets by continuous functions. It is also a fundamental ingredient in proving the Tietze Extension Theorem, another property of normal spaces that deals with the existence of extensions of continuous functions. Using the Cantor function, we give alternative proofs for Urysohn's Lemma and the Tietze Extension Theorem.

Examples of sharp asymptotic profiles of singular solutions to an elliptic equation with a sign-changing non-linearity

The first two authors [Proc. Lond. Math. Soc. (3) {\bf 114}(1):1--34, 2017] classified the behaviour near zero for all positive solutions of the perturbed elliptic equation with a critical Hardy--Sobolev growth $$-Δu=|x|^{-s} u^{2^\star(s)-1} -μu^q \hbox{ in }B\setminus\{0\},$$ where $B$ denotes the open unit ball centred at $0$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$ for $n\geq 3$, $s\in (0,2)$, $2^\star(s):=2(n-s)/(n-2)$, $μ>0$ and $q>1$. For $q\in (1,2^\star-1)$ with $2^\star=2n/(n-2)$, it was shown in the op. cit. that the positive solutions with a non-removable singularity at $0$ could exhibit up to three different singular profiles, although their existence was left open. In the present paper, we settle this question for all three singular profiles in the maximal possible range. As an important novelty for $μ>0$, we prove that for every $q\in (2^\star(s) -1,2^\star-1)$ there exist infinitely many positive solutions satisfying $|x|^{s/(q-2^\star(s)+1)}u(x)\to μ^{-1/(q-2^\star(s)+1)}$ as $|x|\to 0$, using a dynamical system approach. Moreover, we show that there exists a positive singular solution with $\liminf_{|x|\to 0} |x|^{(n-2)/2} u(x)=0$ and $\limsup_{|x|\to 0} |x|^{(n-2)/2} u(x)\in (0,\infty)$ if (and only if) $q\in (2^\star-2,2^\star-1)$.

Sharp asymptotic profiles for singular solutions to an elliptic equation with a sign-changing nonlinearity

Given $B_1(0)$ the unit ball of $\mathbb{R}^n$ ($n\geq 3$), we study smooth positive singular solutions $u\in C^2(B_1(0)\setminus \{0\})$ to $-Δu=\frac{u^{2^\star(s)-1}}{|x|^s}-μu^q$. Here $0< s<2$, $2^\star(s):=2(n-s)/(n-2)$ is critical for Sobolev embeddings, $q>1$ and $μ> 0$. When $μ=0$ and $s=0$, the profile at the singularity $0$ was fully described by Caffarelli-Gidas-Spruck. We prove that when $μ>0$ and $s>0$, besides this profile, two new profiles might occur. We provide a full description of all the singular profiles. Special attention is accorded to solutions such that $\liminf_{x\to 0}|x|^{\frac{n-2}{2}}u(x)=0$ and $\limsup_{x\to 0}|x|^{\frac{n-2}{2}}u(x)\in (0,+\infty)$. The particular case $q=(n+2)/(n-2)$ requires a separate analysis which we also perform.
