Distribution of the linear flow length in a honeycomb in the small-scatterer limit

We study the statistics of the linear flow in a punctured honeycomb lattice, or equivalently the free motion of a particle on a regular hexagonal billiard table with holes of equal size at the corners and obeying the customary reflection rules. In the small-scatterer limit we prove the existence of the limiting distribution of the free path length with randomly chosen origin of the trajectory and explicitly compute it.

On the distribution of the free path length of the linear flow in a honeycomb

Let $\ell \geq 2$ be an integer. For each $\eps >0$ remove from $\R^2$ the union of discs of radius $\eps$ centered at the integer lattice points $(m,n$, with $m\nequiv n\mod{\ell}$. Consider a point-like particle moving linearly at unit speed, with velocity $ω$, along a trajectory starting at the origin, and its free path length $τ_{\ell,\eps} (ω)\in [0,\infty]$. We prove the weak convergence of the probability measures associated with the random variables $\eps τ_{\ell,\eps}$ as $\eps \to 0^+$ and explicitly compute the limiting distribution. For $\ell=3$ this leads to an asymptotic formula for the length of the trajectory of a billiard in a regular hexagon, starting at the center, with circular pockets of radius $\eps\to 0^+$ removed from the corners. For $\ell=2$ this corresponds to the trajectory of a billiard in a unit square with circular pockets removed from the corners and trajectory starting at the center of the square. The limiting probability measures on $[0,\infty)$ have a tail at infinity, which contrasts with the case of a square with pockets and trajectory starting from one of the corners, where the limiting probability measure has compact support.

An AF algebra associated with the Farey tessellation

To the Farey tessellation of the upper half-plane we associate an AF algebra encoding the cutting sequences that define vertical geodesics. The Effros-Shen AF algebras arise as quotients of our algebra. Using the path algebra model for AF algebras we construct for each $τ\in (0,1/4\big]$, projections $(E_n)$ in this algebra such that $E_n E_{n\pm 1}E_n \leq τE_n$.

On the distribution of angles between geodesic rays associated with hyperbolic lattice points

For every two points $z_0,z_1$ in the upper half-plane, consider all elements $γ$ in the principal congruence group $Γ(N)$, acting on the upper half-plane by fractional linear transformations, such that the hyperbolic distance between $z_1$ and $γz_0$ is at most $R>0$. We study the distribution of angles between the geodesic rays $[z_1,γz_0]$ as $R\to \infty$, proving that the limiting distribution exists independently of $N$ and explicitly computing it. When $z_1=z_0$ this is found to be the uniform distribution on the interval $[-π/2,π/2]$.

The distribution of the free path lengths in the periodic two-dimensional Lorentz gas in the small-scatterer limit

We study the free path length and the geometric free path length in the model of the periodic two-dimensional Lorentz gas (Sinai billiard). We give a complete and rigorous proof for the existence of their distributions in the small-scatterer limit and explicitly compute them. As a corollary one gets a complete proof for the existence of the constant term $c=2-3\ln 2+\frac{27ζ(3)}{2π^2}$ in the asymptotic formula $h(T)=-2\ln \eps+c+o(1)$ of the KS entropy of the billiard map in this model, as conjectured by P. Dahlqvist.

The average length of a trajectory in a certain billiard in a flat two-torus

We remove a small disc from the flat two-dimensional torus and consider a point-like particle that starts moving from the center of the disc with linear trajectory. We provide asymptotic estimates for the moments of the first exit time, with respect to the velocity, when the radius of the disc tends to zero.

The statistics of the trajectory in a certain billiard in a flat two-torus

We consider a billiard in the punctured torus obtained by removing a small disk from the two-dimensional flat torus, with trajectory starting from the center of the puncture. In this case the phase space is given by the range of the velocity only. We prove that the probability measures on $[0,\infty)$ associated with the first exit time are weakly convergent when the size of the puncture tends to zero and explicitly compute the density of the limit.

Norm estimates of almost Mathieu operators

We estimate the norm of the almost Mathieu operator $H_{θ,λ} =U+U^*+(λ/2)(V+V^*)$ in the rotation $C^*$-algebra $A_θ=C^*(U,V unitaries;UV=e^{2πiθ} VU)$. In this process, we significantly improve the inequality $\| H_θ\| \leq 2\sqrt{2}$, $θ\in [0.25,0.5]$, conjectured by Beguin, Valette and Zuk.
