In this note we establish the following result (announced in a previous work): if a linear group is the image of a representation of a Kähler group, then it has a finite index subgroup which is the image of a representation of the fundamental group of a smooth projective variety. In particular, a Kähler group which is linear is virtually projective.
We extend to compact Kähler manifolds some classical results on linear representation of fundamental groups of complex projective manifolds. Our approach based on an interversion lemma for fibrations with tori versus general type manifolds as fibers gives a refinement of the classical work of Zuo. We extend to the kahler case some general results on holomorphic convexity of coverings such as the linear shafarevich conjecture. In the first version, the proof of the statement that a linear Kahler group is virtually complex-projective was wrong. We removed it from this new version. The proof will be given in a forthcoming work.
We prove that any compact Kähler 3-dimensional manifold which has no non-trivial complex subvarieties is a torus. This is a very special case of a general conjecture on the structure of 'simple manifolds', central in the bimeromorphic classification of compact Kähler manifolds. The proof follows from the Brunella pseudo-effectivity theorem, combined with fundamental results of Siu and of the second author on the Lelong numbers of closed positive (1,1)-currents, and with a version of the hard Lefschetz theorem for pseudo-effective line bundles, due to Takegoshi and Demailly-Peternell-Schneider. In a similar vein, we show that a normal compact and Kähler 3-dimensional analytic space with terminal singularities and nef canonical bundle is a cyclic quotient of a simple non-projective torus if it carries no effective divisor. This is a crucial step to complete the bimeromorphic classification of compact Kähler 3-folds
This is a note on Beauville's problem (solved by Greb, Lehn and Rollenske in the non-algebraic case and by Hwang and Weiss in general) whether a lagrangian torus on an irreducible holomorphic symplectic manifold is a fiber of a lagrangian fibration. We provide a different, very short solution in the non-algebraic case and make some observations suggesting a different approach in the algebraic case.
We prove the existence of non-positively curved Kähler-Einstein metrics with cone singularities along a given simple normal crossing divisor on a compact Kähler manifold, under a technical condition on the cone angles, and we also discuss the case of positively-curved Kähler-Einstein metrics with cone singularities. As an application we extend to this setting classical results of Lichnerowicz and Kobayashi on the parallelism and vanishing of appropriate holomorphic tensor fields.
We show that a complex projective manifold X which satisfies the Gromov's h-principle is `special', and raise some questions about the reverse implication, the extension to the quasi-K\" ahler case, and the relationships of these properties to the `Oka' property. The guiding principle is that the existence of many Stein manifolds which have degenerate Kobayashi pseudometric gives strong obstructions to the complex hyperbolicity of X satisfying the h-principle.
Using orbifold metrics of the appropriately signed Ricci curvature on orbifolds with negative or numerically trivial canonical bundle and the two-dimensional Log Minimal Model Program, we prove that the fundamental group of special compact Kähler threefolds is almost abelian. This property was conjectured in all dimensions in [Cam04b], and also for orbifolds in [Cam07], where the notion of specialness was introduced. We briefly recall below the definition, basic properties, and the role of special manifolds in classification theory.
In this note we show that given a lc pair $(X, Δ)$, a large enough multiple of the bundle $K_X+ Δ$ is effective provided that its Chern class contains an effective $\bQ$-divisor.
Let $X$ be a projective manifold of dimension $n$ and $L$ a strictly nef line bundle on $X$. Then $K_X+tL$ is ample if $t > n+1$ in the following cases. 1.) $\text{dim} X = 3$ unless (possibly) $X$ is a Calabi-Yau with $c_2 \cdot L=0$; 2.) $κ(X) \ge n-2$; 3.) $\text{dim} α(X) \ge n-2$, with $α: X \to A$ the Albanese map.
We show the isotriviality of families of simply-connected hyperk\" ahler manifolds without algebraic factor, and general tori, provided the total space of the family is compact K\" ahler.
We show that Lang's hyperbolic and function version conjectures hold for surfaces $S$ of general type having a fibration of general type onto a curve $C$. The notion of multiplicity used is natural, but not classical, which leds to orbifold versions of Mordell's conjectures not reducible by ramified covering tricks to the already solved cases. These are solved here in the two above case (hyperbolic and function field cases). But the arithmetic case (which follows from the abc conjecture) is left open. We also give an example of a simply connected surface of general type having a fibration of general type on $\Bbb P^1$, showing that the non-classical notion of multiplicity used does not impose conditions on the fundamental group.
A contact singularity is a normal singularity $(V,0)$ together with a holomorphic contact form $η$ on $V\backslash$ Sing $V$ in a neighbourhood of 0, i.e. $η\wedge (dη)^r$ has no zero, where dim $V=2r+1$. The main result of this paper is that there are no isolated contact singularities.
Andreotti-Vesentini, Ohsawa, Gromov, Kollár, among others, have observed that Hodge theory could be extended to (non compact) Kähler complete manifolds, within the L^2 framework. Also, many vanishing theorems on projective or Kähler manifolds rely on the Kodaira-Bochner-Nakano identity, and thus possess natural L^2 versions. Our goal is to define canonical L^2 cohomology groups on any unramified covering of an analytic variety X, with values in a coherent analytic sheaf on X. This cohomology shares all usual properties of standard coherent sheaf cohomology (especially, exact sequences, spectral sequences, vanishing theorems,...). These properties are obtained by incorporating the information provided by L^2 estimates in the standard proofs, with suitable adaptations. L^2 cohomology should provide a comfortable and efficient framework for the study the geometry of coverings, by providing a relevant fonctorial formalism. When the base variety is compact and the covering is a Galois covering of group $Γ$, there is a $Γ$ action on cohomology groups and a related concept of $Γ$-dimension. In that case, we prove that the $Γ$-dimension of cohomology groups is finite, and we extend Atiyah's L^2 index theorem to the case of arbitrary coherent sheaves. Finally, if the base manifold is projective, L^2 analogues of the usual vanishing theorems (Kodaira-Serre, Kawamata-Viehweg,...) are valid. Similar constructions and results have also been studied by P. Eyssidieux.
We investigate compact complex manifolds of dimension three and second Betti number $b_2(X) = 0$. We are interested in the algebraic dimension $a(X)$, which is by definition the transcendence degree of the field of meromorphic functions over the field of complex numbers. The topological Euler characteristic $χ_{\mathrm{ top}}(X) $ equals the third Chern class $c_3(X)$ by a theorem of Hopf. Our main result is that, if $X$ is a compact 3-dimensional complex manifold with $b_2(X) = 0$ and $a(X) > 0$, then $c_3(X) = χ_{\rm top}(X) = 0$, that is, we either have $b_1(X) = 0, \ b_3(X) = 2$ or $b_1(X) = 1, \ b_3(X) = 0.$
The purpose of this paper is to translate positivity properties of the tangent bundle (and the anti-canonical bundle) of an algebraic manifold into existence and movability properties of rational curves and to investigate the impact on the global geometry of the manifold $X$. Among the results we prove are these: \quad If $X$ is a projective manifold, and ${\cal E} \subset T_X$ is an ample locally free sheaf with $n-2\ge rk {\cal E}\ge n$, then $X \simeq \EP_n$. \quad Let $X$ be a projective manifold. If $X$ is rationally connected, then there exists a free $T_X$-ample family of (rational) curves. If $X$ admits a free $T_X$-ample family of curves, then $X$ is rationally generated.
