Chandrasekhar-Clogston limit and critical polarization in a Fermi-Bose superfluid mixture

We study mixtures of a population-imbalanced strongly-interacting Fermi gas and of a Bose-Einstein condensed gas at zero temperature. In the homogeneous case, we find that the Chandrasekhar-Clogston critical polarization for the onset of instability of Fermi superfluidity is enhanced due to the interaction with the bosons. Predictions for the critical polarization are also given in the trapped case, with a special focus to the situation of equal Fermi-Bose and Bose-Bose coupling constants, where the density of fermions becomes flat in the center of the trap. This regime can be realized experimentally using Feshbach resonances and is well suited to investigate the emergence of exotic configurations, such as the occurrence of spin domains or the FFLO phase.

A Mixture of Bose and Fermi Superfluids

Superconductivity and superfluidity of fermionic and bosonic systems are remarkable many-body quantum phenomena. In liquid helium and dilute gases, Bose and Fermi superfluidity has been observed separately, but producing a mixture in which both the fermionic and the bosonic components are superfluid is challenging. Here we report on the observation of such a mixture with dilute gases of two Lithium isotopes, 6Li and 7Li. We probe the collective dynamics of this system by exciting center-of-mass oscillations that exhibit extremely low damping below a certain critical velocity. Using high precision spectroscopy of these modes we observe coherent energy exchange and measure the coupling between the two superfluids. Our observations can be captured theoretically using a sum-rule approach that we interpret in terms of two coupled oscillators.

Momentum distribution of a dilute unitary Bose gas with three-body losses

Using Boltzmann's equation, we study the effect of three-body losses on the momentum distribution of a homogeneous unitary Bose gas in the dilute limit where quantum correlations are negligible. We calculate the momentum distribution of the gas and show that inelastic collisions are quantitatively as important as a second order virial correction.

Spin Drag of a Fermi Gas in a Harmonic Trap

Using a Boltzmann equation approach, we analyze how the spin drag of a trapped interacting fermionic mixture is influenced by the non-homogeneity of the system in a classical regime where the temperature is much larger than the Fermi temperature. We show that for very elongated geometries, the spin damping rate can be related to the spin conductance of an infinitely long cylinder. We characterize analytically the spin conductance both in the hydrodynamic and collisionless limits and discuss the influence of the velocity profile. Our results are in good agreement with recent experiments and provide a quantitative benchmark for further studies of spin drag in ultracold gases.

Λ-enhanced Sub-Doppler Cooling of Lithium Atoms in D1 Gray Molasses

Following the bichromatic sub-Doppler cooling scheme on the D1 line of 40K recently demonstrated in (Fernandes et al. 2012), we introduce a similar technique for 7Li atoms and obtain temperatures of 60 uK while capturing all of the 5x10^8 atoms present from the previous stage. We investigate the influence of the detuning between the the two cooling frequencies and observe a threefold decrease of the temperature when the Raman condition is fulfilled. We interpret this effect as arising from extra cooling due to long-lived coherences between hyperfine states. Solving the optical Bloch equations for a simplified, Λ-type three-level system we identify the presence of an efficient cooling force near the Raman condition. After transfer into a quadrupole magnetic trap, we measure a phase space density of ~10^-5. This laser cooling offers a promising route for fast evaporation of lithium atoms to quantum degeneracy in optical or magnetic traps.

Condensation Energy of a Spin-1/2 Strongly Interacting Fermi Gas

We report a measurement of the condensation energy of a two-component Fermi gas with tunable interactions. From the equation of state of the gas, we infer the properties of the normal phase in the zero-temperature limit. By comparing the pressure of the normal phase at T=0 to that of the low-temperature superfluid phase, we deduce the condensation energy, i.e. the energy gain of the system in being in the superfluid rather than normal state. We compare our measurements to a ladder approximation description of the normal phase, and to a fixed node Monte-Carlo approach, finding excellent agreement. We discuss the relationship between condensation energy and pairing gap in the BEC-BCS crossover.

2.1-watts intracavity-frequency-doubled all-solid-state light source at 671 nm for laser cooling of lithium

We present an all-solid-state laser source emitting up to 2.1 W of single-frequency light at 671 nm developed for laser cooling of lithium atoms. It is based on a diode-pumped, neodymium-doped orthovanadate (Nd:YVO$_4$) ring laser operating at 1342 nm. Optimization of the thermal management in the gain medium results in a maximum multi-frequency output power of 2.5 W at the fundamental wavelength. We develop a simple theory for the efficient implementation of intracavity second harmonic generation, and its application to our system allows us to obtain nonlinear conversion efficiencies of up to 88%. Single-mode operation and tuning is established by adding an etalon to the resonator. The second-harmonic wavelength can be tuned over 0.5 nm, and mode-hop-free scanning over more than 6 GHz is demonstrated, corresponding to around ten times the laser cavity free spectral range. The output frequency can be locked with respect to the lithium $D$-line transitions for atomic physics applications. Furthermore, we observe parametric Kerr-lens mode-locking when detuning the phase-matching temperature sufficiently far from the optimum value.

Wave Resistance for Capillary Gravity Waves: Finite Size Effects

We study theoretically the capillary-gravity waves created at the water-air interface by an external surface pressure distribution symmetrical about a point and moving at constant velocity along a linear trajectory. Within the framework of linear wave theory and assuming the fluid to be inviscid, we calculate the wave resistance experienced by the perturbation as a function of its size (compared to the capillary length). In particular, we analyze how the amplitude of the jump occurring at the minimum phase speed $c_{\rm min}=(4 g γ/ρ)^{1/4}$ depends on the size of the pressure distribution ($ρ$ is the liquid density, $γ$ is the water-air surface tension, and $g$ is the acceleration due to gravity). We also show how for pressure distributions broader than a few capillary lengths, the result obtained by Havelock for the wave resistance in the particular case of pure gravity waves (i.e., $γ= 0$) is progressively recovered.

Sub-Doppler laser cooling of fermionic 40K atoms in three-dimensional gray optical molasses

We demonstrate sub-Doppler cooling of 40K on the D_1 atomic transition. Using a gray molasses scheme, we efficiently cool a compressed cloud of 6.5x10^8 atoms from ~ 4\mK to 20uK in 8 ms. After transfer in a quadrupole magnetic trap, we measure a phase space density of ~10^-5. This technique offers a promising route for fast evaporation of fermionic 40K.

Liquid Hertz Contact: softness of weakly deformed drops on non-wetting substrates

The behavior of weakly deformed drops on non wetting surfaces is usually described using linear models. We show that these simple pictures cannot account for measurements of the dynamics of droplets that oscillate or bounce on super-hydrophobic substrates. We demonstrate that several peculiar experimental observations observed in previous works can be understood through a logarithmic correction of the linear model.

The p-wave polaron

We consider the properties of a single impurity immersed in a Fermi sea close to an interspecies p-wave Feshbach resonance. We calculate its dispersion and spectral response to a radiofrequency pulse. In the presence of a magnetic field, dipolar interactions split the resonance and lead to the appearance of two novel features with respect to the s-wave case: a third polaron branch in the excitation spectrum, in addition to the usual attractive and repulsive ones; and an anisotropic dispersion of the impurity characterized by different effective masses perpendicular and parallel to the magnetic field. The anisotropy can be tuned as a function of the field strength and the two effective masses may have opposite signs, or become smaller than the bare mass.

Boltzmann equation simulation for a trapped Fermi gas of atoms

The dynamics of an interacting Fermi gas of atoms at sufficiently high temperatures can be efficiently studied via a numerical simulation of the Boltzmann equation. In this work we describe in detail the setup we used recently to study the oscillations of two spin-polarised fermionic clouds in a trap. We focus here on the evaluation of interparticle interactions. We compare different ways of choosing the phase space coordinates of a pair of atoms after a successful collision and demonstrate that the exact microscopic setup has no influence on the macroscopic outcome.

Collision of two spin polarized fermionic clouds

We study the collision of two spin polarized Fermi clouds in a harmonic trap using a simulation of the Boltzmann equation. As observed in recent experiments we find three distinct regimes of behavior. For weak interactions the clouds pass through each other. If interactions are increased they approach each other exponentially and for strong interactions they bounce off each other several times. We thereby demonstrate that all these phenomena can be reproduced using a semiclassical collisional approach and that these changes in behavior are associated with an increasing collision rate. We then show that the oscillation of the clouds in the bounce regime is an example of an unusual case in quantum gases: a nonlinear coupling between collective modes, namely the spin dipole mode and the axial breathing mode which is enforced by collisions. We also determine the frequency of the bounce as a function of the final temperature of the equilibrated system.

An all-solid-state laser source at 671 nm for cold atom experiments with lithium

We present an all solid-state narrow line-width laser source emitting $670\,\mathrm{mW}$ output power at $671\,\mathrm{nm}$ delivered in a diffraction-limited beam. The \linebreak source is based on a fre-quency-doubled diode-end-linebreak pumped ring laser operating on the ${^4F}_{3/2} \rightarrow {^4I}_{13/2}$ transition in Nd:YVO$_4$. By using periodically-poled po-tassium titanyl phosphate (ppKTP) in an external build-up cavity, doubling efficiencies of up to 86% are obtained. Tunability of the source over $100\,\rm GHz$ is accomplished. We demonstrate the suitability of this robust frequency-stabilized light source for laser cooling of lithium atoms. Finally a simplified design based on intra-cavity doubling is described and first results are presented.

Fermi-Liquid Behavior of the Normal Phase of a Strongly Interacting Gas of Cold Atoms

We measure the magnetic susceptibility of a Fermi gas with tunable interactions in the low-temperature limit and compare it to quantum Monte Carlo calculations. Experiment and theory are in excellent agreement and fully compatible with the Landau theory of Fermi liquids. We show that these measure- ments shed new light on the nature of the excitations of the normal phase of a strongly interacting Fermi gas.

Dynamics and Thermodynamics of the Low-Temperature Strongly Interacting Bose Gas

We measure the zero-temperature equation of state of a homogeneous Bose gas of $^7$Li atoms by analyzing the \emph{in-situ} density distributions of trapped samples. For increasing repulsive interactions our data shows a clear departure from mean-field theory and provides a quantitative test of the many-body corrections first predicted in 1957 by Lee, Huang and Yang. We further probe the dynamic response of the Bose gas to a varying interaction strength and compare it to simple theoretical models. We deduce a lower bound for the value of the universal constant $ξ>0.44(8)$ that would characterize the universal Bose gas at the unitary limit.

Large atom number dual-species magneto-optical trap for fermionic 6Li and 40K atoms

We present the design, implementation and characterization of a dual-species magneto-optical trap (MOT) for fermionic 6Li and 40K atoms with large atom numbers. The MOT simultaneously contains 5.2x10^9 6Li-atoms and 8.0x10^9 40K-atoms, which are continuously loaded by a Zeeman slower for 6Li and a 2D-MOT for 40K. The atom sources induce capture rates of 1.2x10^9 6Li-atoms/s and 1.4x10^9 40K-atoms/s. Trap losses due to light-induced interspecies collisions of ~65% were observed and could be minimized to ~10% by using low magnetic field gradients and low light powers in the repumping light of both atomic species. The described system represents the starting point for the production of a large-atom number quantum degenerate Fermi-Fermi mixture.
