From geodesic flow to wave dynamics on hyperbolic surfaces

We study the geodesic flow on the unit cotangent bundle $M=S^{*}\mathcal{N}$ of a closed hyperbolic surface $\mathcal{N}$, using the representation theory of $SL_{2}(\mathbb{R})$. We construct explicit $X$-adapted Hilbert spaces, obtained by completing propagated dense domains of $L^{2}(M)$, which are tailored to the spectral analysis of the geodesic generator $X$. In these spaces, $X$ becomes a normal operator with discrete spectrum, except at the threshold $μ=1/4$, where Jordan blocks of size two may occur. In this Hilbert model, the propagator $e^{tX}$ factorizes into a damped harmonic oscillator with eigenvalues $e^{-t(n+1/2)}$, $n\in\mathbb{N}$, and a transverse part involving the shifted wave group $e^{\pm it\sqrt{Δ-1/4}}$ on $\mathcal{N}$, together with the holomorphic and anti-holomorphic discrete series. The model clarifies two classical links between geodesic dynamics and the Laplace spectrum. Comparing the spectral trace of the propagator in the $X$-adapted Hilbert model with the Atiyah--Bott--Guillemin flat trace gives a dynamical form of the Selberg trace formula: closed geodesics arise from the flat trace, while the spectral side comes from the explicit $SL_{2}(\mathbb{R})$-decomposition. The same factorization also explains the large-time structure of spherical mean operators on $\mathcal{N}$: after the natural $e^{t/2}$-renormalization and the removal of a finite-rank low-energy part, the shifted wave equation on $\mathcal{N}$ emerges as the leading effective dynamics. Thus the construction provides an explicit Hilbert-space structure relating classical geodesic dynamics, Ruelle resonances, and the spectral theory of the surface.

Can quantum dynamics emerge from classical chaos?

Anosov geodesic flows are among the simplest mathematical models of deterministic chaos. In this survey we explain how, quite unexpectedly, quantum dynamics emerges from purely classical correlation functions. The underlying mechanism is the discrete Pollicott Ruelle spectrum of the geodesic flow, revealed through microlocal analysis. This spectrum naturally arranges into vertical bands; when the rightmost band is separated from the rest by a gap, it governs an effective dynamics that mirrors quantum evolution.

Topological index formula in physical waves: spectral flow, Chern index and topological contacts

We study a family of pseudodifferential operators (quantum Hamiltonians) on $L^{2}(\mathbb{R}^{n};\mathbb{C}^{d})$ whose spectrum exhibits two energy bands exchanging a finite number of eigenvalues. We show that this number coincides with the Chern index of a vector bundle associated to the principal symbol (the classical Hamiltonian). This result provides a simple yet illustrative instance of the Atiyah Singer index formula, with applications in areas such as molecular physics, plasma physics or geophysics. We also discuss the phenomenon of topological contact without exchange between energy bands, a feature that cannot be detected by the Chern index or K theory, but rather reflects subtle torsion effects in the homotopy groups of spheres.

Micro-local analysis of contact Anosov flows and band structure of the Ruelle spectrum

We develop a geometrical micro-local analysis of contact Anosov flow, such as geodesic flow on negatively curved manifold. This micro-local analysis is based on wave-packet transform discussed in arXiv:1706.09307. The main result is that the transfer operator is well approximated (in the high frequency limit) by the quantization of the Hamiltonian flow naturally defined from the contact Anosov flow and extended to some vector bundle over the symplectization set. This gives a few important consequences: the discrete eigenvalues of the generator of transfer operators, called Ruelle spectrum, are structured into vertical bands. If the right-most band is isolated from the others, most of the Ruelle spectrum in it concentrate along a line parallel to the imaginary axis and, further, the density satisfies a Weyl law as the imaginary part tend to infinity. Some of these results were announced in arXiv:1301.5525.

Fractal Weyl law for the Ruelle spectrum of Anosov flows

On a closed manifold $M$, we consider a smooth vector field $X$ that generates an Anosov flow. Let $V\in C^{\infty}\left(M;\mathbb{R}\right)$ be a smooth function called potential. It is known that for any $C>0$, there exists some anisotropic Sobolev space $\mathcal{H}_{C}$ such that the operator $A=-X+V$ has intrinsic discrete spectrum on $\mathrm{Re}\left(z\right)>-C$ called Ruelle resonances. In this paper, we show a fractal Weyl law: the density of resonances is bounded by $O\left(\left\langle ω\right\rangle ^{\frac{n}{1+β_{0}}}\right)$ where $ω=\mathrm{Im}\left(z\right)$, $n=\mathrm{dim}M-1$ and $0<β_{0}\leq1$ is the Hölder exponent of the distribution $E_{u}\oplus E_{s}$ (strong stable and unstable). We also obtain some more precise results concerning the wave front set of the resonances and the invertibility of the transfer operator. Since the dynamical distributions $E_{u}$,$E_{s}$ are non smooth, we use some semi-classical analysis based on wave packet transform associated to an adapted metric $g$ on $T^{*}M$ and construct some specific anisotropic Sobolev spaces.

Manifestation of the topological index formula in quantum waves and geophysical waves

Using semi-classical analysis in $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ we present a quite general model for which the topological index formula of Atiyah-Singer predicts a spectral flow with the transition of a finite number of eigenvalues between clusters (energy bands). This model corresponds to physical phenomena that are well observed for quantum energy levels of small molecules [faure_zhilinskii_2000,2001], also in geophysics for the oceanic or atmospheric equatorial waves [Matsuno_1966, Delplace_Marston_Venaille_2017] and expected to be observed in plasma physics [Qin, Fu 2022].

Ruelle spectrum of linear pseudo-Anosov maps

The Ruelle resonances of a dynamical system are spectral data describing the precise asymptotics of correlations. We classify them completely for a class of chaotic two-dimensional maps, the linear pseudo-Anosov maps, in terms of the action of the map on cohomology. As applications, we obtain a full description of the distributions which are invariant under the linear flow in the stable direction of such a linear pseudo-Anosov map, and we solve the cohomological equation for this flow.

Asymptotic spectral gap for open partially expanding maps

We consider a $\mathbb{R}$-extension of one dimensional uniformly expanding open dynamical systems and prove a new explicit estimate for the asymptotic spectral gap. To get these results, we use a new application of a "global normal form" for the dynamical system, a "semiclassical expression beyond the Ehrenfest time" that expresses the transfer operator at large time as a sum over rank one operators (each is associated to one orbit). In this paper we establish the validity of the so-called "diagonal approximation" up to twice the local Ehrenfest time.

The semiclassical zeta function for geodesic flows on negatively curved manifolds

We consider the semi-classical (or Gutzwiller-Voros) zeta function for $C^\infty$ contact Anosov flows. Analyzing the spectrum of transfer operators associated to the flow, we prove, for any $τ>0$, that its zeros are contained in the union of the $τ$-neighborhood of the imaginary axis, $|\Re(s)|<τ$, and the region $\Re(s)<-χ_0+τ$, up to finitely many exceptions, where $χ_0>0$ is the hyperbolicity exponent of the flow. Further we show that the zeros in the neighborhood of the imaginary axis satisfy an analogue of the Weyl law.

Power spectrum of the geodesic flow on hyperbolic manifolds

We describe the complex poles of the power spectrum of correlations for the geodesic flow on compact hyperbolic manifolds in terms of eigenvalues of the Laplacian acting on certain natural tensor bundles. These poles are a special case of Pollicott-Ruelle resonances, which can be defined for general Anosov flows. In our case, resonances are stratified into bands by decay rates. The proof also gives an explicit relation between resonant states and eigenstates of the Laplacian.

Resonance chains in open systems, generalized zeta functions and clustering of the length spectrum

In many non-integrable open systems in physics and mathematics resonances have been found to be surprisingly ordered along curved lines in the complex plane. In this article we provide a unifying approach to these resonance chains by generalizing dynamical zeta functions. By means of a detailed numerical study we show that these generalized zeta functions explain the mechanism that creates the chains of quantum resonance and classical Ruelle resonances for 3-disk systems as well as geometric resonances on Schottky surfaces. We also present a direct system-intrinsic definition of the continuous lines on which the resonances are strung together as a projection of an analytic variety. Additionally, this approach shows that the existence of resonance chains is directly related to a clustering of the classical length spectrum on multiples of a base length. Finally, this link is used to construct new examples where several different structures of resonance chains coexist.

Asymptotic spectral gap and Weyl law for Ruelle resonances of open partially expanding maps

We consider a simple model of an open partially expanding map. Its trapped set K in phase space is a fractal set. We first show that there is a well defined discrete spectrum of Ruelle resonances which describes the asymptotics of correlation functions for large time and which is parametrized by the Fourier component νon the neutral direction of the dynamics. We introduce a specific hypothesis on the dynamics that we call "minimal captivity". This hypothesis is stable under perturbations and means that the dynamics is univalued on a neighborhood of K. Under this hypothesis we show the existence of an asymptotic spectral gap and a Fractal Weyl law for the upper bound of density of Ruelle resonances in the semiclassical limit ν-> infinity. Some numerical computations with the truncated Gauss map illustrate these results.

Band structure of the Ruelle spectrum of contact Anosov flows

If X is a contact Anosov vector field on a smooth compact manifold M and V is a smooth function on M, it is known that the differential operator A=-X+V has some discrete spectrum called Ruelle-Pollicott resonances in specific Sobolev spaces. We show that for |Im(z)| large the eigenvalues of A are restricted to vertical bands and in the gaps between the bands, the resolvent of A is bounded uniformly with respect to |Im(z)|. In each isolated band the density of eigenvalues is given by the Weyl law. In the first band, most of the eigenvalues concentrate of the vertical line Re(z)=< D >, the space average of the function D(x)=V(x)-1/2 div(X)/E_u where Eu is the unstable distribution. This band spectrum gives an asymptotic expansion for dynamical correlation functions.

Prequantum transfer operator for symplectic Anosov diffeomorphism

We define the prequantization of a symplectic Anosov diffeomorphism f:M-> M, which is a U(1) extension of the diffeomorphism f preserving an associated specific connection, and study the spectral properties of the associated transfer operator, called prequantum transfer operator. This is a model for the transfer operators associated to geodesic flows on negatively curved manifolds (or contact Anosov flows). We restrict the prequantum transfer operator to the N-th Fourier mode with respect to the U(1) action and investigate the spectral property in the limit N->infinity, regarding the transfer operator as a Fourier integral operator and using semi-classical analysis. In the main result, we show a " band structure " of the spectrum, that is, the spectrum is contained in a few separated annuli and a disk concentric at the origin. We show that, with the special (Hölder continuous) potential V0=1/2 log |det Df_x|_{E_u}|, the outermost annulus is the unit circle and separated from the other parts. For this, we use an extension of the transfer operator to the Grassmanian bundle. Using Atiyah-Bott trace formula, we establish the Gutzwiller trace formula with exponentially small reminder for large time. We show also that, for a potential V such that the outermost annulus is separated from the other parts, most of the eigenvalues in the outermost annulus concentrate on a circle of radius exp where <.> denotes the spatial average on M. The number of these eigenvalues is given by the "Weyl law", that is, N^d.Vol(M) with d=1/2. dim(M) in the leading order. We develop a semiclassical calculus associated to the prequantum operator by defining quantization of observables Op(psi) in an intrinsic way. We obtain that the semiclassical Egorov formula of quantum transport is exact. We interpret all these results from a physical point of view as the emergence of quantum dynamics in the classical correlation functions for large time. We compare these results with standard quantization (geometric quantization) in quantum chaos.

Upper bound on the density of Ruelle resonances for Anosov flows

Using a semiclassical approach we show that the spectrum of a smooth Anosov vector field V on a compact manifold is discrete (in suitable anisotropic Sobolev spaces) and then we provide an upper bound for the density of eigenvalues of the operator (-i)V, called Ruelle resonances, close to the real axis and for large real parts.

Semiclassical origin of the spectral gap for transfer operators of partially expanding map

We consider a simple model of partially expanding map on the torus. We study the spectrum of the Ruelle transfer operator and show that in the limit of high frequencies in the neutral direction (this is a semiclassical limit), the spectrum develops a spectral gap, for a generic map. This result has already been obtained by M. Tsujii (05). The novelty here is that we use semiclassical analysis which provides a different and quite natural description. We show that the transfer operator is a semiclassical operator with a well defined "classical dynamics" on the cotangent space. This classical dynamics has a "trapped set" which is responsible for the Ruelle resonances spectrum. In particular we show that the spectral gap is closely related to a specific dynamical property of this trapped set.
