Proximal Galerkin for the isometry constraint

We resolve a longstanding open problem in the computational modeling of nonlinear plates by introducing a numerical method that exactly enforces the isometry constraint, namely, that the first fundamental form of the mid-surface coincides with the identity tensor. Several numerical methods have been proposed to approximate solutions of such manifold-constrained variational problems using gradient flows with tangent space updates. However, this class of methods presents two main challenges. First, a preprocessing step is required to enforce the boundary conditions and generate an initial guess sufficiently close to an isometry. Second, each step of the gradient flow typically increases the isometry defect. We adopt an alternative approach based on the proximal Galerkin framework, originally introduced for variational problems with convex inequality constraints. The resulting method preserves the geometric structure of the feasible set and yields an efficient algorithm in which each iterate is an exact isometry at the barycenter of every mesh cell. In contrast to existing methods, no preprocessing step is required, enabling broader applicability of this important category of mathematical models. Numerical experiments on standard benchmarks demonstrate that the method converges to a prescribed error tolerance in an asymptotically mesh-independent number of iterations and requires substantially fewer iterations than previous methods, even on coarse meshes.

Computation of stresses in jammed packings modeled with Tresca friction

This paper is interested in the computation of stresses within jammed packings of rigid polygonal cells. The cells are considered to follow a Tresca friction law. First, a constrained minimization problem is introduced where the friction energy is minimized while enforcing the non-interpenetration of neighboring cells as inequality constraints. The corresponding dual maximization problem is then deduced and its solutions provide normal stresses at the interface between cells. Finally, lowest order Raviart-Thomas finite elements are used to reconstruct a consistent stress field by solving local problems. Numerical results are presented to showcase the consistency and robustness of the proposed methodology.

Quasi-static crack propagation with a Griffith criterion using a variational discrete element method

A variational discrete element method is applied to simulate quasi-static crack propagation. Cracks are considered to propagate between the mesh cells through the mesh facets. The elastic behaviour is parametrized by the continuous mechanical parameters (Young modulus and Poisson ratio). A discrete energetic cracking criterion coupled to a discrete kinking criterion guide the cracking process. Two-dimensional numerical examples are presented to illustrate the robustness and versatility of the method.

A variational discrete element method for the computation of Cosserat elasticity

The variational discrete element method developed in [28] for dynamic elasto-plastic computations is adapted to compute the deformation of elastic Cosserat materials. In addition to cellwise displacement degrees of freedom (dofs), cellwise rotational dofs are added. A reconstruction is devised to obtain P 1 non-conforming polynomials in each cell and thus constant strains and stresses in each cell. The method requires only the usual macroscopic parameters of a Cosserat material and no microscopic parameter. Numerical examples show the robustness of the method for both static and dynamic computations in two and three dimensions.

A variational discrete element method for quasi-static and dynamic elasto-plasticity

We propose a new discrete element method supporting general polyhedral meshes. The method can be understood as a lowest-order discontinuous Galerkin method parametrized by the continuous mechanical parameters (Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio). We consider quasi-static and dynamic elasto-plasticity, and in the latter situation, a pseudo-energy conserving time-integration method is employed. The computational cost of the time-stepping method is moderate since it is explicit and used with a naturally diagonal mass matrix. Numerical examples are presented to illustrate the robustness and versatility of the method for quasi-static and dynamic elasto-plastic evolutions.

An explicit pseudo-energy conserving time-integration scheme for Hamiltonian dynamics

We propose a new explicit pseudo-energy and momentum conserving scheme for the time integration of Hamiltonian systems. The scheme, which is formally second-order accurate, is based on two key ideas: the integration during the time-steps of forces between free-flight particles and the use of momentum jumps at the discrete time nodes leading to a two-step formulation for the acceleration. The pseudo-energy conservation is established under exact force integration, whereas it is valid to second-order accuracy in the presence of quadrature errors. Moreover, we devise an asynchronous version of the scheme that can be used in the framework of slow-fast time-stepping strategies. The scheme is validated against classical benchmarks and on nonlinear or inhomogeneous wave propagation problems.
