Evidence of columnar order in the fully frustrated transverse field Ising model on the square lattice

Using extensive classical and quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we investigate the ground-state phase diagram of the fully frustrated transverse field Ising model on the square lattice. We show that pure columnar order develops in the low-field phase above a surprisingly large length scale, below which an effective U(1) symmetry is present. The same conclusion applies to the Quantum Dimer Model with purely kinetic energy, to which the model reduces in the zero-field limit, as well as to the stacked classical version of the model. By contrast, the 2D classical version of the model is shown to develop plaquette order. Semiclassical arguments show that the transition from plaquette to columnar order is a consequence of quantum fluctuations.

Semiclassical approach to ground-state properties of hard-core bosons in two dimensions

Motivated by some inconsistencies in the way quantum fluctuations are included beyond the classical treatment of hard-core bosons on a lattice in the recent literature, we revisit the large-S semi-classical approach to hard-core bosons on the square lattice at T=0. First of all, we show that, if one stays at the purely harmonic level, the only correct way to get the 1/S correction to the density is to extract it from the derivative of the ground state energy with respect to the chemical potential, and that to extract it from a calculation of the ground state expectation value of the particle number operator, it is necessary to include 1/\sqrt{S} corrections to the harmonic ground state. Building on this alternative approach to get 1/S corrections, we provide the first semiclassical derivation of the momentum distribution, and we revisit the calculation of the condensate density. The results of these as well as other physically relevant quantities such as the superfluid density are systematically compared to quantum Monte Carlo simulations. This comparison shows that the logarithmic corrections in the dilute Bose gas limit are only captured by the semi-classical approach if the 1/S corrections are properly calculated, and that the semi-classical approach is able to reproduce the 1/k divergence of the momentum distribution at k=0. Finally, the effect of 1/S^2 corrections is briefly discussed.

Entropy dependence of correlations in one-dimensional SU(N) antiferromagnets

Motivated by the possibility to load multi-color fermionic atoms in optical lattices, we study the entropy dependence of the properties of the one-dimensional antiferromagnetic SU(N) Heisenberg model, the effective model of the SU(N) Hubbard model with one particle per site (filling 1/N). Using continuous-time world line Monte Carlo simulations for N=2 to 5, we show that characteristic short-range correlations develop at low temperature as a precursor of the ground state algebraic correlations. We also calculate the entropy as a function of temperature, and we show that the first sign of short-range order appears at an entropy per particle that increases with N and already reaches 0.8k_B at N=4, in the range of experimentally accessible values.

Anticollinear magnetic order induced by impurities in the frustrated Heisenberg model of pnictides

We present Monte Carlo simulations for a classical antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model with both nearest ($J_1$) and next-nearest ($J_2$) exchange couplings on the square lattice in the presence of non-magnetic impurities. We show that the order-by-disorder entropy selection, associated with the Ising-like phase transition that appears for $J_2/J_1>1/2$ in the pure spin model, is quenched at low temperature due to the presence of non-magnetic impurities. Evidences that a new competing order is stabilized around the impurities, and in turn induces a re-entrance phase transition are reported. Implications for local magnetic measurement of the parent compound of iron pnictides are briefly discussed.

Antiferromagnetic spin-S chains with exactly dimerized ground states

We show that spin S Heisenberg spin chains with an additional three-body interaction of the form (S_{i-1}S_{i})(S_{i}S_{i+1})+h.c. possess fully dimerized ground states if the ratio of the three-body interaction to the bilinear one is equal to 1/(4S(S+1)-2). This result generalizes the Majumdar-Ghosh point of the J_1-J_2 chain, to which the present model reduces for S=1/2. For S=1, we use the density matrix renormalization group method (DMRG) to show that the transition between the Haldane and the dimerized phases is continuous with central charge c=3/2. Finally, we show that such a three-body interaction appears naturally in a strong-coupling expansion of the Hubbard model, and we discuss the consequences for the dimerization of actual antiferromagnetic chains.

Three-sublattice order in the SU(3) Heisenberg model on the square and triangular lattice

We present a numerical study of the SU(3) Heisenberg model of three-flavor fermions on the triangular and square lattice by means of the density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) and infinite projected entangled-pair states (iPEPS). For the triangular lattice we confirm that the ground state has a three-sublattice order with a finite ordered moment which is compatible with the result from linear flavor wave theory (LFWT). The same type of order has recently been predicted also for the square lattice [PRL 105, 265301 (2010)] from LFWT and exact diagonalization. However, for this case the ordered moment cannot be computed based on LFWT due to divergent fluctuations. Our numerical study clearly supports this three-sublattice order, with an ordered moment of m=0.2-0.4 in the thermodynamic limit.

Spin-wave analysis of the transverse-field Ising model on the checkerboard lattice

The ground state properties of the S=1/2 transverse-field Ising model on the checkerboard lattice are studied using linear spin wave theory. We consider the general case of different couplings between nearest neighbors (J1) and next-to-nearest neighbors (J2). In zero field the system displays a large degeneracy of the ground state, which is exponential in the system size (for J1=J2) or in the system's linear dimensions (for J2>J1). Quantum fluctuations induced by a transverse field are found to be unable to lift this degeneracy in favor of a classically ordered state at the harmonic level. This remarkable fact suggests that a quantum-disordered ground state can be instead promoted when non-linear fluctuations are accounted for, in agreement with existing results for the isotropic case J1=J2. Moreover spin-wave theory shows sizable regions of instability which are further candidates for quantum-disordered behavior.

Theory of inelastic light scattering in spin-1 systems: resonant regimes and detection of quadrupolar order

Motivated by the lack of an obvious spectroscopic probe to investigate non-conventional order such as quadrupolar orders in spin S>1/2 systems, we present a theoretical approach to inelastic light scattering for spin-1 quantum magnets in the context of a two-band Hubbard model. In contrast to the S=1/2 case, where the only type of local excited state is a doubly occupied state of energy $U$, several local excited states with occupation up to 4 electrons are present. As a consequence, we show that two distinct resonating scattering regimes can be accessed depending on the incident photon energy. For $\hbarω_{in}\lesssim U$, the standard Loudon-Fleury operator remains the leading term of the expansion as in the spin-1/2 case. For $\hbarω_{in}\lesssim4U$, a second resonant regime is found with a leading term that takes the form of a biquadratic coupling $\sim({\bf S}_{i}\cdot{\bf S}_{j)^{2}$. Consequences for the Raman spectra of S=1 magnets with magnetic or quadrupolar order are discussed. Raman scattering appears to be a powerful probe of quadrupolar order.

Unconventional magnetization plateaus in a Shastry-Sutherland spin tube

Using density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) and perturbative continuous unitary transformations (PCUTs), we study the magnetization process in a magnetic field for all coupling strengths of a quasi-1D version of the 2D Shastry-Sutherland lattice, a frustrated spin tube made of two orthogonal dimer chains. At small inter-dimer coupling, plateaus in the magnetization appear at 1/6, 1/4, 1/3, 3/8, and 1/2. As in 2D, they correspond to a Wigner crystal of triplons. However, close to the boundary of the product singlet phase, plateaus of a new type appear at 1/5 and 3/4. They are stabilized by the localization of {\it bound states} of triplons. Their magnetization profile differs significantly from that of single triplon plateaus and leads to specific NMR signatures. We address the possibility to stabilize such plateaus in further geometries by analyzing small finite clusters using exact diagonalizations and the PCUTs.

Phase diagram and continuous pair-unbinding transition of the bilinear-biquadratic S=1 Heisenberg chain in a magnetic field

We investigate the properties of the Heisenberg S=1 chain with bilinear and biquadratic interactions in a magnetic field using the Density Matrix Renormalization Group, Bethe ansatz and field theoretical considerations. In a large region of the parameter space, we identify a magnetized ferroquadrupolar Luttinger liquid consisting of a quasi-condensate of bound magnon pairs. This liquid undergoes a continuous pair unbinding transition to a more conventional Luttinger liquid region obtained by polarizing the system above the Haldane gap region. This pair unbinding transition is shown to be in the Ising universality class on top of a Luttinger liquid, leading to an effective central charge 3/2. We also revisit the nature of the partially polarized Luttinger liquid around and above the Uimin-Lai-Sutherland point. Our results confirm that this is a two-component liquid and rule out the formation of a single-component vector chiral phase.

Phase separation versus supersolid behavior in frustrated antiferromagnets

We investigate the competition between spin-supersolidity and phase separation in a frustrated spin-half model of weakly coupled dimers. We start by considering systems of hard-core bosons on the square lattice, onto which the low-energy physics of the herein investigated spin model can be mapped, and devise a criterion for gauging the interplay between supersolid order and domain wall formation based on strong coupling arguments. Effective bosonic models for the spin model are derived via the contractor renormalization (CORE) algorithm and we propose to combine a self-consistent cluster mean-field solution with our criterion for the occurrence of phase separation to derive the phase diagram as a function of frustration and magnetic field. In the limit of strong frustration, the model is shown to be unstable toward phase separation, in contradiction with recently published results. However, a region of stable supersolidity is identified for intermediate frustration, in a parameter range not investigated so far and of possible experimental relevance.

Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya anisotropy and non-magnetic impurities in the $s = 1/2$ kagome system ZnCu_3(OH)_6Cl_2

Motivated by recent nuclear magnetic resonance experiments on ZnCu$_3$(OH)$_6$Cl$_2$, we present an exact-diagonalization study of the combined effects of non-magnetic impurities and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interactions in the $s = 1/2$ kagome antiferromagnet. The local response to an applied field and correlation-matrix data reveal that the dimer freezing which occurs around each impurity for $D = 0$ persists at least up to $D/J\simeq 0.06$, where $J$ and $D$ denote respectively the exchange and DM interaction energies. The phase transition to the ($Q = 0$) semiclassical, 120$^\circ$ state favored at large $D$ takes place at $D/J\simeq 0.1$. However, the dimers next to the impurity sites remain strong up to values $D \sim J$, far above this critical point, and thus do not participate fully in the ordered state. We discuss the implications of our results for experiments on ZnCu$_3$(OH)$_6$Cl$_2$.

Spin-Peierls instabilities of antiferromagnetic rings in a magnetic field

Motivated by the intriguing properties of magnetic molecular wheels at field induced level crossings, we investigate the spin-Peierls instability of antiferromagnetic rings in a field by exact diagonalizations of a microscopic spin model coupled to the lattice via a distortion dependent Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. We show that, beyond the unconditional instability at level crossings for infinitesimal magnetoelastic coupling, the model is characterized by a stronger tendency to distort at higher level crossings, and by a dramatic angular dependence with very sharp torque anomalies when the field is almost in the plane of the ring. These predictions are shown to compare remarkably well with available torque and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance data on CsFe8.

Orbital currents in extended Hubbard models of high-T$_c$ cuprates

Motivated by the recent report of broken time-reversal symmetry and zero momentum magnetic scattering in underdoped cuprates, we investigate under which circumstances orbital currents circulating inside a unit cell might be stabilized in extended Hubbard models that explicitly include oxygen orbitals. Using Gutzwiller projected variational wave functions that treat on an equal footing all instabilities, we show that orbital currents indeed develop on finite clusters, and that they are stabilized in the thermodynamic limit if additional interactions, e.g. strong hybridization with apical oxygens, are included in the model.

A 2D quantum antiferromagnet with a four-fold degenerate valence-bond-solid ground state

We study the competition between antiferromagnetic order and valence bond solid formation in a two-dimensional frustrated spin-1/2 model. The J1-J2 model on the square lattice is further frustrated by introducing products of three-spin projectors which stabilize four dimer-product states as degenerate ground states. These four states are reminiscent of the dimerized singlet ground state of the Shastry-Sutherland model. Using exact diagonalizations, we study the evolution of the ground state by varying theratio of interactions. For a large range of parameters (J2 > 0.25J1), our model shows a direct transition between the valence-bond-solid phase and the collinear antiferromagnetic phase. For small values of J2, several intermediate phases appear which are also analyzed.

Magnetism and superconductivity of strongly correlated electrons on the triangular lattice

We investigate the phase diagram of the \tj Model on a triangular lattice using a Variational Monte-Carlo approach. We use an extended set of Gutzwiller projected fermionic trial wave-functions allowing for simultaneous magnetic and superconducting order parameters. We obtain energies at zero doping for the spin-1/2 Heisenberg model in very good agreement with the best estimates. Upon electron doping (with a hopping integral $t<0$) this phase is surprisingly stable variationally up to $n\approx 1.4$, while the $d_{x^{2}-y^{2}}+i d_{xy}$ order parameter is rather weak and disappears at $n\approx 1.1$. For hole doping however the coplanar magnetic state is almost immediately destroyed and $d_{x^{2}-y^{2}}+i d_{xy}$ superconductivity survives down to $n\approx 0.8$. For lower $n$, between 0.2 and 0.8, we find saturated ferromagnetism. Moreover, there is evidence for a narrow spin density wave phase around $n\approx 0.8$. Commensurate flux phases were also considered, but these turned out {\em not} to be competitive at finite doping.

Freezing and large time scales induced by geometrical frustration

We investigate the properties of an effective Hamiltonian with competing interactions involving spin and chirality variables, relevant for the description of the {\it trimerized} version of the spin-1/2 {\it kagome} antiferromagnet. Using classical Monte Carlo simulations, we show that remarkable behaviors develop at very low temperatures. Through an {\it order by disorder} mechanism, the low-energy states are characterized by a dynamical freezing of the chiralities, which decouples the lattice into ``dimers'' and ``triangles'' of antiferromagnetically coupled spins. Under the presence of an external magnetic field, the particular topology of the chiralities induces a very slow spin dynamics, reminiscent of what happens in ordinary spin glasses.

Theory of the optical conductivity of (TMTSF)$_2$PF$_6$ in the mid-infrared range

We propose an explanation of the mid-infrared peak observed in the optical conductivity of the Bechgaard salt (TMTSF)$_2$PF$_6$ in terms of electronic excitations. It is based on a numerical calculation of the conductivity of the quarter-filled, dimerized Hubbard model. The main result is that, even for intermediate values of $U/t$ for which the charge gap is known to be very small, the first peak, and at the same time the main structure, of the optical conductivity is at an energy of the order of the dimerization gap, like in the infinite $U$ case. This surprising effect is a consequence of the optical selection rules.
