Open quantum system approach to the transverse momentum broadening of a colour dipole

Using the open quantum systems formalism, we study the propagation of a quark-antiquark pair propagating through a dense QCD plasma of size $L$ and transverse momentum broadening transport coefficient $\hat q$, and we derive the Lindblad evolution equation for the density matrix of the system. We focus on the boosted regime where the opening angle $θ_{q\bar q}$ of this effective colour dipole satisfies $θ_{q\bar q}\ll 1$. In the correlation limit where the quark-antiquark relative transverse momentum $p_\perp$ is much larger than the imbalance $q_\perp$ as well as the medium typical transverse momentum scale $Q_s=\sqrt{\hat q L}$, we demonstrate that the resulting Wigner distribution displays quasi factorisation between a hard factor describing the hard splitting producing the $q\bar q$ pair and the transverse momentum imbalance $q_\perp$-distribution encoding the broadening induced by the medium. The factorisation is violated by a "colour decoherence" factor that controls the $θ_{q\bar q}$ dependence of the $q_\perp$-distribution through the ratio $θ_{q\bar q}/θ_c$, with $θ_c \sim (\hat q L^3)^{-1/2}$. The open quantum systems approach enables us to clarify the role of this critical angle $θ_c$ and its associated critical time $t_c$ in the genuine quantum decoherence of the density matrix in colour and kinematic space: in particular, $t_c$ controls both the suppression of the off-diagonal elements of the density matrix in colour space and the transition between singlet and octet states. We find, however, that colour decoherence sets in earlier than the full decoherence of the density matrix, thereby marking the onset of classical behaviour in the system. Finally, we investigate the corrections beyond the quasi-factorised picture due to the quantum diffusion term in $p_\perp$ of the Lindblad equation and we find that these corrections are mild.

Probing fully coherent radiation and parton densities using (virtual) photons at the LHC

Prompt photon production in pA collisions has long been suggested as a sensitive probe of the nuclear parton distribution functions (nPDFs). In this study, we present recent results on another cold nuclear matter effect, namely fully coherent radiation induced by parton multiple scattering, which may influence the nuclear dependence of prompt photon production. Medium-induced radiation effects, implemented in leading-order direct and fragmentation photon processes, are computed for pPb collisions at the LHC. At backward rapidity, photons are sensitive to fully coherent energy loss (FCEL), while at forward rapidity, fully coherent energy gain (FCEG) plays a crucial role due to the dominance of the $qg \to qγ$ scattering channel. In contrast, for virtual photon production, the impact of fully coherent radiation is marginal, making Drell-Yan (DY) one of the best ways to probe nuclear PDFs. The power of the DY process is demonstrated by reweighting nPDF sets at next-to-leading order using realistic pseudo-data for LHC Run 3.

Path-length dependence of parton and jet energy loss from universal scaling laws

The universal dependence of hadron suppression, $R_{\rm{AA}}(p_\perp)$, observed at large-$p_\perp$ in heavy ion collisions at RHIC and LHC allows for a systematic determination of the average parton energy loss $\langle ε\rangle$ in quark-gluon plasma (QGP). A simple relation between $\langle ε\rangle$ and the soft particle multiplicity allows for probing the dependence of parton energy loss on the medium path-length. We find that all the available measurements are consistent with $\langle ε\rangle \propto L^β$ with $β=1.02\pm^{0.09}_{0.06}$, consistent with the pQCD expectation of parton energy loss in a longitudinally expanding QGP. We then show, based on the model predictions, that the data on the azimuthal anisotropy coefficient divided by the collision eccentricity, $v_2/\rm{e}$, follows the same scaling property as $R_{\rm{AA}}$. Finally, a linear relationship between $v_2/\rm{e}$ and the logarithmic derivative of $R_{\rm{AA}}$ at large $p_\perp$ offers a purely data-driven access to the $L$ dependence of parton energy loss. Quite remarkably, both hadron and jet measurements obey this latter relationship, moreover with consistent values of $β$. This points to the same parametric path-length dependence of parton and jet energy loss in QGP.

Probing the path-length dependence of parton energy loss via scaling properties in heavy ion collisions

The scaling property of large-$p_\perp$ hadron suppression, $R_{\rm{AA}}(p_\perp)$, measured in heavy ion collisions at RHIC and LHC leads to the determination of the average parton energy loss $\langle ε\rangle$ in quark-gluon plasma produced in a variety of collision systems and centrality classes. Relating $\langle ε\rangle$ to the particle multiplicity and collision geometry allows for probing the dependence of parton energy loss on the path-length $L$. We find that $\langle ε\rangle \propto L^β$ with $β=1.02^{+0.09}_{-0.06}$, consistent with the pQCD expectation of parton energy loss in a longitudinally expanding quark-gluon plasma. We then demonstrate that the azimuthal anisotropy coefficient divided by the collision eccentricity, $v_2/\textrm{e}$, follows the same scaling property as $R_{\rm{AA}}$. This scaling is observed in data, which are reproduced by the model at large $p_\perp$. Finally, a linear relationship between $v_2/\textrm{e}$ and the logarithmic derivative of $R_{\rm{AA}}$ is found and confirmed in data, offering an additional way to probe the $L$ dependence of parton energy loss using coming measurements from LHC Run 3.

Depletion of atmospheric neutrino fluxes from parton energy loss

The phenomenon of fully coherent energy loss (FCEL) in the collisions of protons on light ions affects the physics of cosmic ray air showers. As an illustration, we address two closely related observables: hadron production in forthcoming proton-oxygen collisions at the LHC, and the atmospheric neutrino fluxes induced by the semileptonic decays of hadrons produced in proton-air collisions. In both cases, a significant nuclear suppression due to FCEL is predicted. The conventional and prompt neutrino fluxes are suppressed by $\sim 10...25\%$ in their relevant neutrino energy ranges. Previous estimates of atmospheric neutrino fluxes should be scaled down accordingly to account for FCEL.

Impact of fully coherent energy loss on heavy meson production in pA collisions

Hadron production in proton-nucleus (pA) collisions was previously shown to be suppressed by medium-induced fully coherent energy loss (FCEL). We show that the quenching of $D$ and $B$ mesons in pPb collisions at the LHC due solely to FCEL is, at least, on par with other nuclear effects such as gluon shadowing or saturation. This is consistent with previous findings for both quarkonium and light hadron production in pA collisions, emphasising that FCEL effects need to be included for a reliable understanding of hadron production measurements in pA collisions.

Nuclear $p_\perp$-broadening of Drell-Yan and quarkonium production from SPS to LHC

The nuclear $p_\perp$-broadening of Drell-Yan and quarkonium ($J/ψ$, $Υ$) production in $π$A and pA collisions is investigated. The world data follow a simple scaling from SPS to LHC energies, once the process-dependent color factors are properly taken into account, which allows for the extraction of the transport coefficient in cold nuclear matter. We find that $\hat{q}(x)\propto x^{-α}$ with $α=0.25$-$0.30$. The magnitude of the transport coefficient at $x=10^{-2}$ is $\hat{q}_0=0.051$ GeV$^2$/fm and $\hat{q}_0=0.075$ GeV$^2$/fm, whether $Q\bar{Q}$ pairs are assumed to be produced as color octet or color singlet states, respectively. The relation between nuclear broadening data and the (CT14) gluon density is also investigated.

Fully coherent energy loss effects on light hadron production in pA collisions

We single out the role of fully coherent induced gluon radiation on light hadron production in pA collisions. The effect has the same general features as for quarkonium production, however with a richer color structure as the induced radiation depends on the global color charge of the partonic subprocess final state. Baseline predictions for light hadron nuclear suppression in pPb collisions at the LHC are provided, taking into account only the effect of fully coherent energy loss, which proves to be of the same order of magnitude as gluon shadowing or saturation. This underlines the need to include fully coherent energy loss in phenomenological studies of hadron production in pA collisions.

Quenching of hadron spectra in XeXe and PbPb collisions at the LHC

The $p_\perp$ dependence of the nuclear modification factor $R_{\text{AA}}$ measured in PbPb collisions at the LHC exhibits a universal shape, which can be very well reproduced in a simple energy loss model based on the BDMPS medium-induced gluon spectrum. We update a former study by including in the analysis the recent CMS measurements on $J/ψ$ production in PbPb collisions at $\sqrt{s}=5.02$ TeV and charged hadron production in XeXe collisions at $\sqrt{s}=5.44$ TeV. The average parton energy loss extracted from minimum bias XeXe collisions is reduced typically by 20% compared to PbPb collisions, consistent with a length dependence $\langle\barε\rangle \propto L^{1.3\pm0.5}$ with $L\propto A^{1/3}$.

Initial-state energy loss in cold QCD matter and the Drell-Yan process

The effects of parton energy loss in nuclear matter on the Drell-Yan process in pA and $π$A collisions at fixed-target energies are investigated. Calculations are based on the Baier-Dokshitzer-Mueller-Peigné-Schiff (BDMPS) framework embedded in a next-to-leading order calculation, using the transport coefficient extracted from $J/ψ$ measurements. Model calculations prove in good agreement with preliminary measurements by the E906 experiment, despite a slightly different magnitude, supporting a consistent picture between Drell-Yan and $J/ψ$ data. Predictions for the COMPASS future measurements in $π$A collisions at $\sqrt{s}=18.9$~GeV are also performed. At higher collision energy ($\sqrt{s}=38.7$~GeV), Drell-Yan measurements are only slightly affected by energy loss effects. On the contrary, the E906 results turn out in clear disagreement with nuclear PDF effects alone. The comparison of E772, E866, and E906 measurements indicates for the first time a clear violation of QCD factorization in Drell-Yan production in pA collisions.

Features of W production in p-p, p-Pb and Pb-Pb collisions

We consider the production of inclusive W bosons in variety of high-energy hadronic collisions: p--p, p--$\overline{\rm p}$, p--Pb, and Pb--Pb. In particular, we focus on the resulting distributions of charged leptons from W decay that can be measured with relatively low backgrounds. The leading-order expressions within the collinearly factorized QCD indicate that the center-of-mass energy dependence at forward/backward rapidities should be well approximated by a simple power law. The scaling exponent is related to the small-$x$ behaviour of the quark distributions, which is largely driven by the parton evolution. An interesting consequence is the simple scaling law for the lepton charge asymmetry which relates measurements in different collision systems. The expectations are contrasted with the existing data and a very good overall agreement is found. Finally, we propose precision observables to be measured at the LHC.

Quenching of Hadron Spectra in Heavy Ion Collisions at the LHC

The $p_\perp$ dependence of the nuclear modification factor $R_{\rm AA}$ measured in PbPb collisions at the LHC exhibits a universal shape, which can be very well reproduced in a simple energy loss model based on the BDMPS medium-induced gluon spectrum. The scaling is observed for various hadron species ($h^\pm$, $D$, $J/ψ$) in different centrality classes and at both colliding energies, $\sqrt{s}=2.76$ TeV and $\sqrt{s}=5.02$ TeV. Results indicate an 10-20% increase of the transport coefficient from $\sqrt{s}=2.76$ TeV to $\sqrt{s}=5.02$ TeV, consistent with that of particle multiplicity. Based on this model, a data-driven procedure is suggested, which allows for the determination of the first and second moments of the quenching weight without any prior knowledge of the latter.

Aspects of hard QCD processes in proton-nucleus collisions

Hard processes in high-energy proton-nucleus collisions are a powerful tool in order to investigate several importants aspects of QCD in a nuclear medium, such as nuclear shadowing, parton multiple scattering or medium-induced gluon radiation. I review in these proceedings recent progress in that field.

Scaling properties of inclusive W$^\pm$ production at hadron colliders

We consider the hadroproduction of W gauge bosons in their leptonic decay mode. Starting from the leading-order expressions, we show that by defining a suitable scaling variable the centre-of-mass dependence of the cross sections at the LHC energies can be essentially described by a simple power law. The scaling exponent is directly linked to the small-$x$ behaviour of parton distribution functions (PDF) which, at the high virtualities involved in W production, is largely dictated by QCD evolution equations. This entails a particularly simple scaling law for the lepton charge asymmetry and also predicts that measurements in different collision systems (p-p, p-$\bar{\rm p}$, p-Pb Pb-Pb) are straightforwardly related. The expectations are compared with the existing data and a very good overall agreement is observed. It is shown that the PDF uncertainty in certain cross-section ratios between nearby centre-of-mass energies can be significantly reduced by taking the ratios at fixed value of scaling variable instead of fixed rapidity.

Coherent medium-induced gluon radiation in hard forward $1\to 1$ partonic processes

We revisit the medium-induced coherent radiation associated to hard and forward (small angle) scattering of an energetic parton through a nuclear medium. We consider all $1\to 1$ hard forward processes ($g \to g$, $q \to q$, $q \to g$ and $g \to q$), and derive the energy spectrum of induced coherent radiation rigorously to all orders in the opacity expansion and for the specific case of a Coulomb scattering potential. We obtain a simple general formula for the induced coherent spectrum, which encompasses the results corresponding to previously known special cases.
