From Markovian actions to Anosov flows

In this paper, we establish a necessary and sufficient condition for a group action on a bifoliated plane to arise from a topological Anosov flow supported by an orientable $3$-manifold. More precisely, we show that a group action on a non-singular bifoliated plane arises from such a flow if and only if it is an orientation preserving strong Markovian action, that is, an orientation preserving action of the plane preserving a family of rectangles satisfying suitable Markov-type properties. Furthermore, we prove that this family of rectangles can be lifted to a Markov partition of the associated flow.

Construction of Anosov flows on fibered hyperbolic 3-manifolds

We prove that fibered hyperbolic $3$-manifolds carrying transitive Anosov flows are abundant. More precisely, for every $g\geq 2$, there is a finite index subgroup~$Γ$ of $ \mathrm{Mod}(S_g)/\mathrm{Tor}(S_g) \simeq \mathrm{Sp}(2g,\mathbb{Z}) $ so that every element of $Γ$ has a representative $φ\in \operatorname{Mod}(S_g)$ such that the mapping torus $ M_φ:= S_g \times [0,1]/(x,1) \sim (φ(x),0) $ carries a transitive Anosov flow. The manifold $M_φ$ is hyperbolic for almost every element of $Γ$. This shows in particular that, in the set of all fibered hyperbolic manifolds, the subset made of the manifolds carrying Anosov flows has positive density up to trivial linear monodromy. Moreover, the subgroup $Γ$ is defined by an explicit set of generators, and our construction yields many examples of simple fibered hyperbolic manifolds carrying Anosov flows.

Projective transformations of rotation sets

We give a new proof and extend a result of J. Kwapisz: whenever a set C is realized as the rotation set of some torus homeomorphism, the image of C under certain projective transformations is also realized as a rotations set.

Fixed point sets of isotopies on surfaces

We consider a self-homeomorphism h of some surface S. A subset F of the fixed point set of h is said to be unlinked if there is an isotopy from the identity to h that fixes every point of F. With Le Calvez' transverse foliations theory in mind, we prove the existence of unlinked sets that are maximal with respect to inclusion. As a byproduct, we prove the arcwise connectedness of the space of homeomorphisms of the two dimensional sphere that preserves the orientation and pointwise fix some given closed connected set F.

A dynamical decomposition of the torus into pseudo-circles

We build an irrational pseudo-rotation of the 2-torus which is semiconjugate to an irrational rotation of the circle in such a way that all the fibres of the semi-conjugacy are pseudo-circles. The proof uses the well-known `fast-approximation method' introduced by Anosov and Katok.

A spectral-like decomposition for transitive Anosov flows in dimension three

Given a (transitive or non-transitive) Anosov vector field $X$ on a closed three-dimensional manifold $M$, one may try to decompose $(M,X)$ by cutting $M$ along two-tori transverse to $X$. We prove that one can find a finite collection $\{T_1,\dots,T_n\}$ of pairwise disjoint, pairwise non-parallel incompressible tori transverse to $X$, such that the maximal invariant sets $Λ_1,\dots,Λ_m$ of the connected components $V_1,\dots,V_m$ of $M-(T_1\cup\dots\cup T_n)$ satisfy the following properties: 1, each $Λ_i$ is a compact invariant locally maximal transitive set for $X$, 2, the collection $\{Λ_1,\dots,Λ_m\}$ is canonically attached to the pair $(M,X)$ (i.e., it can be defined independently of the collection of tori $\{T_1,\dots,T_n\}$), 3, the $Λ_i$'s are the smallest possible: for every (possibly infinite) collection $\{S_i\}_{i\in I}$ of tori transverse to $X$, the $Λ_i$'s are contained in the maximal invariant set of $M-\cup_i S_i$. To a certain extent, the sets $Λ_1,\dots,Λ_m$ are analogs (for Anosov vector field in dimension 3) of the basic pieces which appear in the spectral decomposition of a non-transitive axiom A vector field. Then we discuss the uniqueness of such a decomposition: we prove that the pieces of the decomposition $V_1,\dots,V_m$, equipped with the restriction of the Anosov vector field $X$, are "almost unique up to topological equivalence".

Building Anosov flows on 3-manifolds

We prove a result allowing to build (transitive or non-transitive) Anosov flows on 3-manifolds by gluing together filtrating neighborhoods of hyperbolic sets. We give several applications; for example: 1. we build a 3-manifold supporting both of a transitive Anosov vector field and a non-transitive Anosov vector field; 2. for any n, we build a 3-manifold M supporting at least n pairwise different Anosov vector fields; 3. we build transitive attractors with prescribed entrance foliation; in particular, we construct some incoherent transitive attractors; 4. we build a transitive Anosov vector field admitting infinitely many pairwise non-isotopic trans- verse tori.

Existence of orbits with non-zero torsion for certain types of surface diffeomorphisms

The present paper concerns the dynamics of surface diffeomorphisms. Given a diffeomorphism $f$ of a surface $S$, the \emph{torsion} of the orbit of a point $z\in S$ is, roughly speaking, the average speed of rotation of the tangent vectors under the action of the derivative of $f$, along the orbit of $z$ under $f$. The purpose of the paper is to identify some situations where there exist measures and orbits with non-zero torsion. We prove that every area preserving diffeomorphism of the disc which coincides with the identity near the boundary has an orbit with non-zero torsion. We also prove that a diffeomorphism of the torus $\mathbb{T}^2$, isotopic to the identity, whose rotation set has non-empty interior, has an orbit with non-zero torsion.

Aperiodic oscillatory asymptotic behavior for some Bianchi spacetimes

We study the asymptotic behavior of type A vacuum Bianchi spacetimes. It has been conjectured that this behavior is driven by a certain circle map, called the Kasner map. As a step towards this conjecture, we prove that some orbits of the Kasner map do indeed attract some solutions of the system of ODEs which describes the behavior of type A vacuum Bianchi spacetimes. The orbits of the Kasner map for which we can prove such a result are those which are not periodic and which do not accumulate on any periodic orbit. This shows the existence of Bianchi spacetimes with a aperiodic oscillatory asymptotic behavior.

Realisation of measured dynamics as uniquely ergodic minimal homeomorphisms on manifolds

We prove that the family of measured dynamical systems which can be realised as uniquely ergodic minimal homeomorphisms on a given manifold (of dimension at least two) is stable under measured extension. As a corollary, any ergodic system with an irrational eigenvalue is isomorphic to a uniquely ergodic minimal homeomorphism on the two-torus. The proof uses the following improvement of Weiss relative version of Jewett-Krieger theorem: any extension between two ergodic systems is isomorphic to a skew-product on Cantor sets.

Prescribing Gauss curvature of surfaces in 3-dimensional spacetimes, Application to the Minkowski problem in the Minkowski space

We study the existence of surfaces with constant or prescribed Gauss curvature in certain Lorentzian spacetimes. We prove in particular that every (non-elementary) 3-dimensional maximal globally hyperbolic spatially compact spacetime with constant non-negative curvature is foliated by compact spacelike surfaces with constant Gauss curvature. In the constant negative curvature case, such a foliation exists outside the convex core. The existence of these foliations, together with a theorem of C. Gerhardt, yield several corollaries. For example, they allow to solve the Minkowski problem in the 3-dimensional Minkowski space for datas that are invariant under the action of a co-compact Fuchsian group.

Denjoy constructions for fibred homeomorphisms of the torus

We construct different types of quasiperiodically forced circle homeomorphisms with transitive but non-minimal dynamics. Concerning the recent Poincaré-like classification for this class of maps of Jaeger-Stark, we demonstrate that transitive but non-minimal behaviour can occur in each of the different cases. This closes one of the last gaps in the topological classification. Actually, we are able to get some transitive quasiperiodically forced circle homeomorphisms with rather complicated minimal sets. For example, we show that, in some of the examples we construct, the unique minimal set is a Cantor set and its intersection with each vertical fibre is uncountable and nowhere dense (but may contain isolated points). We also prove that minimal sets of the later kind cannot occur when the dynamics are given by the projective action of a quasiperiodic SL(2,R)-cocycle. More precisely, we show that, for a quasiperiodic SL(2,R)-cocycle, any minimal strict subset of the torus either is a union of finitely many continuous curves, or contains at most two points on generic fibres.

Construction of curious minimal uniquely ergodic homeomorphisms on manifolds: the Denjoy-Rees technique

Mary Rees has constructed a minimal homeomorphism of the 2-torus with positive topological entropy. This homeomorphism f is obtained by enriching the dynamics of an irrational rotation R. We improve Rees construction, allowing to start with any homeomorphism R instead of an irrational rotation and to control precisely the measurable dynamics of f. This yields in particular the following result: Any compact manifold of dimension d>1 which carries a minimal uniquely ergodic homeomorphism also carries a minimal uniquely ergodic homeomorphism with positive topological entropy. More generally, given some homeomorphism R of a (compact) manifold and some homeomorphism h of a Cantor set, we construct a homeomorphism f which "looks like" R from the topological viewpoint and "looks like" R*h from the measurable viewpoint. This construction can be seen as a partial answer to the following realisability question: which measurable dynamical systems are represented by homeomorphisms on manifolds ?
