Quasi-projective and formal-analytic arithmetic surfaces

This memoir is devoted to the study of formal-analytic arithmetic surfaces. These are arithmetic counterparts, in the context of Arakelov geometry, of germs of smooth complex-analytic surfaces along a projective complex curve. Formal-analytic surfaces provide a natural framework for arithmetic algebraization theorems, old and new. Formal-analytic arithmetic surfaces admit a rich geometry which parallels the geometry of complex analytic surfaces. Notably the dichotomy between pseudoconvexity and pseudoconcavity plays a central role in their geometry. Our study of formal-analytic arithmetic surfaces relies crucially on the use of real-valued invariants. Some of these are intersection-theoretic, in the spirit of Arakelov intersection theory. Some other invariants involve infinite-dimensional geometry of numbers. Relating our new intersection-theoretic invariants to more classical invariants of Arakelov geometry leads us to investigate a new invariant, the Archimedean overflow, attached to an analytic map from a pointed compact Riemann surface with boundary to a Riemann surface. It is related to the characteristic functions of Nevanlinna theory. Our results on the geometry of formal-analytic arithmetic surfaces admit applications to concrete problems of arithmetic geometry. Notably we generalize the arithmetic holonomicity theorem of Calegari-Dimitrov-Tang regarding the dimension of spaces of power series with integral coefficients satisfying some convergence conditions. We also establish an arithmetic counterpart of theorems of Lefschetz and Nori by providing a bound on the index, in the étale fundamental group of an arithmetic surface, of the closed subgroup generated by the étale fundamental groups of some arithmetic curve and of some compact Riemann surfaces mapping to the arithmetic surface.

Let $X$ be a smooth projective variety defined over a number field. Assuming $H^2(X,\mathcal O_X)=0,$ Colliot-Thélène and Raskind proved that the torsion subgroup $CH^2(X)_{tors}$ in the Chow group of cycles of codimension $2$ is finite. In this note, we give uniform bounds for the finite group $CH^2(X)_{tors}$ when $X$ varies in a family.

Families of rational curves on holomorphic symplectic varieties and applications to zero-cycles

We study families of rational curves on irreducible holomorphic symplectic varieties. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for a sufficiently ample linear system on a holomorphic symplectic variety of $K3^{[n]}$-type to contain a uniruled divisor covered by rational curves of primitive class. In particular, for any fixed $n$, we show that there are only finitely many polarization types of holomorphic symplectic variety of $K3^{[n]}$-type that do not contain such a uniruled divisor. As an application we provide a generalization of a result due to Beauville-Voisin on the Chow group of 0-cycles on such varieties.

Two results on the Hodge structure of complex tori

We prove two results regarding Hodge structures appearing in the cohomology of complex tori. First, we prove that if a polarizable Hodge structure appears in the cohomology of a complex torus $T$, it appears in the cohomology of an abelian variety isomorphic to a subquotient of $T$. Second, we prove a universality result for the Kuga-Satake construction applied to Hodge structures of $K3$ type that might not be polarized.

A remark on uniform boundedness for Brauer groups

The Tate conjecture for divisors on varieties over number fields is equivalent to finiteness of $\ell$-primary torsion in the Brauer group. We show that this finiteness is actually uniform in one-dimensional families for varieties that satisfy the Tate conjecture for divisors -- e.g. abelian varieties and $K3$ surfaces.

Bertini irreducibility theorems over finite fields

Given a geometrically irreducible subscheme X in P^n over F_q of dimension at least 2, we prove that the fraction of degree d hypersurfaces H such that the intersection of H and X is geometrically irreducible tends to 1 as d tends to infinity. We also prove variants in which X is over an extension of F_q, and in which the immersion of X in P^n is replaced by a more general morphism.

Arithmetic ampleness and an arithmetic Bertini theorem

Let $\mathcal X$ be a projective arithmetic variety of dimension at least $2$. If $\overline{\mathcal L}$ is an ample hermitian line bundle on $\mathcal X$, we prove that the proportion of those effective sections of $\overline{\mathcal L}^{\otimes n}$ that define an irreducible divisor on $\mathcal X$ tends to $1$ as $n$ tends to $\infty$. We prove variants of this statement for schemes mapping to such an $\mathcal X$. On the way to these results, we discuss some general properties of arithmetic ampleness, including restriction theorems, and upper bounds for the number of effective sections of hermitian line bundles on arithmetic varieties.

Frobenius distribution for pairs of elliptic curves and exceptional isogenies

Let E and E' be two elliptic curves over a number field. We prove that the reductions of E and E' at a finite place p are geometrically isogenous for infinitely many p, and draw consequences for the existence of supersingular primes. This result is an analogue for distributions of Frobenius traces of known results on the density of Noether-Lefschetz loci in Hodge theory. The proof relies on dynamical properties of the Hecke correspondences on the modular curve.

Birational boundedness for holomorphic symplectic varieties, Zarhin's trick for $K3$ surfaces, and the Tate conjecture

We investigate boundedness results for families of holomorphic symplectic varieties up to birational equivalence. We prove the analogue of Zarhin's trick by for $K3$ surfaces by constructing big line bundles of low degree on certain moduli spaces of stable sheaves, and proving birational versions of Matsusaka's big theorem for holomorphic symplectic varieties. As a consequence of these results, we give a new geometric proof of the Tate conjecture for $K3$ surfaces over finite fields of characteristic at least $5$, and a simple proof of the Tate conjecture for $K3$ surfaces with Picard number at least $2$ over arbitrary finite fields -- including characteristic $2$.

Some remarks concerning the Grothendieck Period Conjecture

We discuss various results and questions around the Grothendieck period conjecture, which is a counterpart, concerning the de Rham-Betti realization of algebraic varieties over number fields, of the classical conjectures of Hodge and Tate. These results give new evidence towards the conjectures of Grothendieck and Kontsevich-Zagier concerning transcendence properties of the torsors of periods of varieties over number fields. We notably establish that the Grothendieck period conjecture holds in degree 1 for products of curves, of abelian varieties, and of K3 surfaces, and that it holds in degree 2 for smooth cubic fourfolds.

Progrès récents sur les fonctions normales (d'après Green-Griffiths, Brosnan-Pearlstein, M. Saito, Schnell...)

Given a family of smooth complex projective varieties, the Hodge conjecture predicts the algebraicity of the locus of Hodge classes. This was proven unconditionnally by Cattani, Deligne and Kaplan in 1995. In a similar way, conjectures on algebraic cycles have led Green and Griffiths to conjecture the algebraicity of the zero locus of normal functions. This corresponds to a mixed version of the theorem of Cattani, Deligne and Kaplan. This result has been proven recently by Brosnan-Pearlstein, Kato-Nakayama-Usui, and Schnell building on work of M. Saito. We will present some of the ideas around this theorem.

The Tate conjecture for K3 surfaces over finite fields

Artin's conjecture states that supersingular K3 surfaces over finite fields have Picard number 22. In this paper, we prove Artin's conjecture over fields of characteristic p>3. This implies Tate's conjecture for K3 surfaces over finite fields of characteristic p>3. Our results also yield the Tate conjecture for divisors on certain holomorphic symplectic varieties over finite fields, with some restrictions on the characteristic. As a consequence, we prove the Tate conjecture for cycles of codimension 2 on cubic fourfolds over finite fields of characteristic p>3.

On the Picard number of K3 surfaces over number fields

We discuss some aspects of the behavior of specialization at a finite place of Néron-Severi groups of K3 surfaces over number fields. We give optimal lower bounds for the Picard number of such specializations, thus answering a question of Elsenhans and Jahnel. As a consequence of these results, we show that it is possible to explicitly compute the Picard number of any given K3 surface over a number field.

Notes on absolute Hodge classes

We survey the theory of absolute Hodge classes. The notes include a full proof of Deligne's theorem on absolute Hodge classes on abelian varieties as well as a discussion of other topics, such as the field of definition of Hodge loci and the Kuga-Satake construction.
