Free-by-cyclic groups are conjugacy separable

We show that all finitely generated free-by-cyclic groups are conjugacy separable: if a finitely generated group $G$ surjects onto $\mathbb{Z}$ with free kernel, then for every pair of non-conjugate elements $g,h\in G$, there exists a finite quotient $α:G\twoheadrightarrow Q$ such that $α(g)$ is not conjugate to $α(h)$. This resolves Question 19.41 of the Kourovka Notebook. We apply this to prove that the outer automorphism group of a finitely generated free-by-cyclic group is residually finite. Along the way we prove that if the monodromy of a {finitely generated free}-by-cyclic group is polynomially growing, then the double cosets of a cyclic subgroup are separable. Our approach combines vertex fillings in graph-of-groups decompositions, and Dehn fillings in relatively hyperbolic groups, according to the different geometric regimes in free-by-cyclic groups.

Reducing the conjugacy problem for relatively hyperbolic automorphisms to peripheral components

We give a reduction of the conjugacy problem among outer automorphisms of free (and torsion-free hyperbolic) groups to specific algorithmic problems pertaining to mapping tori of polynomially growing automorphisms. We explain how to use this reduction and solve the conjugacy problem for several new classes of outer automorphisms. This proposes a path toward a full solution to the conjugacy problem for $Out (F_n)$.

Class number for pseudo-Anosovs

Given two automorphisms of a group $G$, one is interested in knowing whether they are conjugate in the automorphism group of $G$, or in the abstract commensurator of $G$, and how these two properties may differ. When $G$ is the fundamental group of a closed orientable surface, we present a uniform finiteness theorem for the class of pseudo-Anosov automorphisms. We present an explicit example of a commensurably conjugate pair of pseudo-Anosov automorphisms of a genus $3$ surface, that are not conjugate in the Mapping Class Group, and we also show that infinitely many independent automorphisms of hyperbolic orbifolds have class number equal to one. In the appendix, we briefly survey the Latimer-MacDuffee theorem that addresses the case of automorphisms of $\mathbb{Z}^n$, with a point of view that is suited to an analogy with surface group automorphisms.

Unipotent linear suspensions of free groups

Motivated by the study of the conjugacy problem for outer automorphism of free groups, we develop the algorithmic theory of the free-by-cyclic group produced by unipotent linearly growing automorphisms of f.g. free groups. We compute canonical splittings of these suspensions as well as their subgroups. We compute their automorphism groups. We show that this class of suspensions is effectively coherent. We solve the mixed Whitehead problem in these suspensions and show that their subgroups all satisfy the Minkowski property, i.e. that torsion in their outer automorphism group is faithfully represented in some computable finite quotients. An application of our results is a solution to the conjugacy problem for outer automorphisms of free groups whose polynomially growing part is unipotent linear.

Cubulating a free-product-by-cyclic group

Let $G = H_1 * ... * H_k * F_r$ be a torsion-free group and $ϕ$ an automorphism of $G$ that preserves this free factor system. We show that when $ϕ$ is fully irreducible and atoroidal relative to this free factor system, the mapping torus $Γ= G \rtimes_ϕ \mathbb{Z}$ acts relatively geometrically on a hyperbolic CAT(0) cube complex. This is a generalisation of a result of Hagen and Wise for hyperbolic free-by-cyclic groups.

Hyperbolic hyperbolic-by-cyclic groups are cubulable

We show that the mapping torus of a hyperbolic group by a hyperbolic automorphism is cubulable. Along the way, we (i) give an alternate proof of Hagen and Wise's theorem that hyperbolic free-by-cyclic groups are cubulable, and (ii) extend to the case with torsion Brinkmann's thesis that a torsion-free hyperbolic-by-cyclic group is hyperbolic if and only if it does not contain $\mathbb{Z}^2$-subgroups.

The Conjugacy Problem for $Out(F_3)$

We present a solution to the Conjugacy Problem in the group of outer-automorphisms of $F_3$, a free group of rank 3. We distinguish according to several computable invariants, such as irreducibility, subgroups of polynomial growth, and subgroups carrying the attracting lamination. We establish, by considerations on train tracks, that the conjugacy problem is decidable for the outer-automorphisms of $F_3$ that preserve a given rank 2 free factor. Then we establish, by consideration on mapping tori, that it is decidable for outer-automorphisms of $F_3$ whose maximal polynomial growth subgroups are cyclic. This covers all the cases left by the state of the art.

Relative hyperbolicity of hyperbolic-by-cyclic groups

Let $G$ be a torsion-free hyperbolic group and $α$ an automorphism of $G$. We show that there exists a canonical collection of subgroups that are polynomially growing under $α$, and that the mapping torus of $G$ by $α$ is hyperbolic relative to the suspensions of the maximal polynomially growing subgroups under $α$.

Relative hyperbolicity for automorphisms of free products

We prove that for a free product $G$ with free factor system $\mathcal{G}$, any automorphism $ϕ$ preserving $\mathcal{G}$, atoroidal (in a sense relative to $\mathcal{G}$) and none of whose power send two different conjugates of subgroups in $\mathcal{G}$ on conjugates of themselves by the same element, gives rise to a semidirect product $G\rtimes_ϕ\mathbb{Z}$ that is relatively hyperbolic with respect to suspensions of groups in $\mathcal{G}$. We recover a theorem of Gautero-Lustig and Ghosh that, if $G$ is a free group, $ϕ$ an automorphism of $G$, and $\mathcal{G}$ is its family of polynomially growing subgroups, then the semidirect product by $ϕ$ is relatively hyperbolic with respect to the suspensions of these subgroups. We apply the first result to the conjugacy problem for certain automorphisms (atoroidal and toral) of free products of abelian groups.

Tangent bundles of hyperbolic spaces and proper affine actions on $L^p$ spaces

We define the notion of a negatively curved tangent bundle of a metric measured space. We prove that, when a group $G$ acts on a metric measured space $X$ with a negatively curved tangent bundle, then $G$ acts on some $L^p$ space, and that this action is proper under suitable assumptions. We then check that this result applies to the case when $X$ is a hyperbolic space.

The normal closure of big Dehn twists, and plate spinning with rotating families

We study the normal closure of a big power of one or several Dehn twists in a Mapping Class Group. We prove that it has a presentation whose relators consists only of commutators between twists of disjoint support, thus answering a question of Ivanov. Our method is to use the theory of projection complexes of Bestvina Bromberg and Fujiwara, together with the theory of rotating families, simultaneously on several spaces.

Dehn filling Dehn twists

Let $Σ_{g,p}$ be the genus--$g$ oriented surface with $p$ punctures, with either $g>0$ or $p>3$. We show that $MCG(Σ_{g,p})/DT$ is acylindrically hyperbolic where $DT$ is the normal subgroup of the mapping class group $MCG(Σ_{g,p})$ generated by $K^{th}$ powers of Dehn twists about curves in $Σ_{g,p}$ for suitable $K$. Moreover, we show that in low complexity $MCG(Σ_{g,p})/DT$ is in fact hyperbolic. In particular, for $3g-3+p\leq 2$, we show that the mapping class group $MCG(Σ_{g,p})$ is fully residually non-elementary hyperbolic and admits an affine isometric action with unbounded orbits on some $L^q$ space. Moreover, if every hyperbolic group is residually finite, then every convex-cocompact subgroup of $MCG(Σ_{g,p})$ is separable. The aforementioned results follow from general theorems about composite rotating families that come from a collection of subgroups of vertex stabilisers for the action of a group $G$ on a hyperbolic graph $X$. We give conditions ensuring that the graph $X/N$ is again hyperbolic and various properties of the action of $G$ on $X$ persist for the action of $G/N$ on $X/N$.

Solvable groups of interval exchange transformations

We prove that any finitely generated torsion free solvable subgroup of the group ${\rm IET}$ of all Interval Exchange Transformations is virtually abelian. In contrast, the lamplighter groups $A\wr \mathbb{Z}^k$ embed in ${\rm IET}$ for every finite abelian group $A$, and we construct uncountably many non pairwise isomorphic 3-step solvable subgroups of ${\rm IET}$ as semi-direct products of a lamplighter group with an abelian group. We also prove that for every non-abelian finite group $F$, the group $F\wr \mathbb{Z}^k$ does not embed in ${\rm IET}$.

Deciding Isomorphy using Dehn fillings, the splitting case

We solve Dehn's isomorphism problem for virtually torsion-free relatively hyperbolic groups with nilpotent parabolic subgroups. We do so by reducing the isomorphism problem to three algorithmic problems in the parabolic subgroups, namely the isomorphism problem, separation of torsion (in their outer automorphism groups) by congruences, and the mixed Whitehead problem, an automorphism group orbit problem. The first step of the reduction is to compute canonical JSJ decompositions. Dehn fillings and the given solutions of the algorithmic problems in the parabolic groups are then used to decide if the graphs of groups have isomorphic vertex groups and, if so, whether a global isomorphism can be assembled. For the class of finitely generated nilpotent groups, we give solutions to these algorithmic problems by using the arithmetic nature of these groups and of their automorphism groups.

Growth of quasiconvex subgroups

We prove that non-elementary hyperbolic groups grow exponentially more quickly than their infinite index quasiconvex subgroups. The proof uses the classical tools of automatic structures and Perron-Frobenius theory. We also extend the main result to relatively hyperbolic groups and cubulated groups. These extensions use the notion of growth tightness and the work of Dahmani, Guirardel, and Osin on rotating families.

Recognizing a relatively hyperbolic group by its Dehn fillings

Dehn fillings for relatively hyperbolic groups generalize the topological Dehn surgery on a non-compact hyperbolic $3$-manifold such as a hyperbolic knot complement. We prove a rigidity result saying that if two non-elementary relatively hyperbolic groups without suitable splittings have sufficiently many isomorphic Dehn fillings, then these groups are in fact isomorphic. Our main application is a solution to the isomorphism problem in the class of non-elementary relatively hyperbolic groups with residually finite parabolic groups and with no suitable splittings.

Property $P_{naive}$ for acylindrically hyperbolic groups

We prove that every acylindrically hyperbolic group that has no non-trivial finite normal subgroup satisfies a strong ping pong property, the $P_{naive}$ property: for any finite collection of elements $h_1, \dots, h_k$, there exists another element $γ\neq 1$ such that for all $i$, $\langle h_i, γ\rangle = \langle h_i \rangle* \langle γ\rangle$. We also obtain that if a collection of subgroups $H_1, \dots, H_k$ is a hyperbolically embedded collection, then there is $γ\neq 1$ such that for all $i$, $\langle H_i, γ\rangle = H_i * \langle γ\rangle$.
