Reaction-diffusion equations in periodic media: spreading speeds and spreading sets

We consider solutions of space-periodic reaction-diffusion-advection equations in the whole space R^N, with general unbounded initial support. We show the existence of spreading sets for the solutions at large time, and variational formulas for the spreading speeds. The location of the upper-level sets of a solution with unbounded initial support is estimated in terms of that initial support and the spreading set for the solutions with bounded initial supports. The results hold for the standard classes of Fisher-KPP, ignition, or bistable reactions. The general results apply to the cases of V-shaped and Lambda-shaped initial supports. The proofs rely in particular on upper estimates of what we call retracting solutions.

Propagation phenomena in KPP-bistable periodic patchy environments

This paper first investigates the propagation dynamics of solutions to the Cauchy problem for a one-dimensional reaction-diffusion equation in a spatially periodic environment consisting of two distinct patch types. The novelty of this work lies in the systematic analysis of a KPP-bistable heterogeneous framework. In this setting, the respective patch lengths, the linear stability of the zero solution and the positive periodic steady state, and the magnitude of the initial data play crucial roles in the long-time dynamics. We first establish persistence properties of the species, showing that uniform persistence holds when the zero steady state of the associated periodic patch model is unstable, while local persistence is obtained under additional suitable conditions. Using a dynamical systems approach, we further establish spreading properties and demonstrate the existence of pulsating traveling waves in two different cases, depending on whether the trivial solution is unstable or stable. Finally, we present two sets of sufficient conditions characterizing species extinction.

Thresholds, fragmentation and symmetrization in parabolic equations

This paper is mainly concerned with the large-time dynamics of bounded nonnegative solutions of reaction-diffusion equations on the real line with nonlinearities mainly of the bistable-type. We first consider initial data of the type $α\mathbf{1}_I$, namely scalar multiples of indicator functions of intervals $I$. For each amplitude $α$, the existence of a threshold length $L^*(α)$ separating the extinction and the persistence of the solutions at large time is known. We here address the question as to whether the limit of the threshold sizes $L^*(α)$ as $α\to+\infty$ is positive or zero. We provide sufficient conditions under which this limit is positive, and others under which it is zero. Secondly, when the limit is positive, we show that some fragmented initial data, which are equally distributed as $α\mathbf{1}_I$, give rise to solutions persisting at large time, whereas the solutions emanating from $α\mathbf{1}_I$ go to extinction at large time. This result shows an unexpected favourable effect of the fragmentation of the initial datum on the large-time dynamics. Last, we consider the mass concentration principle for parabolic equations, which states that nonnegative solutions can be controlled from above in an integral sense by the solutions emanating from the Schwarz symmetrically decreasing rearrangements of the initial data. Since the pioneering results of [Bandle, 1976] and [Alvino, Trombetti, Lions, 1990], this principle is known to hold in bounded domains with Dirichlet boundary conditions under different types of assumptions of the coefficients of the equation. We show that this mass concentration principle is not valid in general, even for simple equations of the type $\partial_t u = \partial_{xx} u + f(u)$.

Reaction-diffusion equations in periodic media: convergence to pulsating fronts

This paper is concerned with reaction-diffusion-advection equations in spatially periodic media. Under an assumption of weak stability of the constant states 0 and 1, and of existence of pulsating traveling fronts connecting them, we show that fronts' profiles appear, along sequences of times and points, in the large-time dynamics of the solutions of the Cauchy problem, whether their initial supports are bounded or unbounded. The types of equations that fit into our assumptions are the combustion and the bistable ones. We also show a generalized Freidlin-G{ä}rtner formula and other geometrical properties of the asymptotic invasion shapes, or spreading sets, of invading solutions, and we relate these sets to the upper level sets of the solutions.

Traveling Wave Solutions For A Singular Diffusive Prey-Predator Model With Nonlocal Dispersal

We study a singular diffusive prey-predator system with nonlocal dispersal for which the carrying capacity of the predator is proportional to the density of prey. We show the existence of positive one-dimensional traveling waves connecting the predator-free state and the constant co-existence state. The set of admissible wave speeds is proved to be equal to the semi-infinite interval $[s^*,\infty)$, for some $s^*>0$ which is characterized by a variational formula.

Log-concavity and anti-maximum principles for semilinear and linear elliptic equations

This paper is concerned with existence and qualitative properties of positive solutions of semilinear elliptic equations in bounded domains with Dirichlet boundary conditions. We show the existence of positive solutions in the vicinity of the linear equation and the log-concavity of the solutions when the domain is strictly convex. We also review the standard results on the log-concavity or the more general quasi-concavity of solutions of elliptic equations. The existence and other convergence results especially rely on the maximum principle, on a quantified version of the anti-maximum principle, on the Schauder fixed point theorem, and on some a priori estimates.

Periodic KPP equations: new insights into persistence, spreading, and the role of advection

We focus on the persistence and spreading properties for a heterogeneous Fisher-KPP equation with advection. After reviewing the different notions of persistence and spreading speeds, we focus on the effect of the direction of the advection term, denoted by $b$. First, we prove that changing $b$ to $-b$ can have an effect on the spreading speeds and the ability of persistence. Next, we provide a class of relationships between the intrinsic growth term $r$ and the advection term $b$ such that changing $b$ to $-b$ does not change the spreading speeds and the ability of persistence. We briefly mention the cases of slowly and rapidly varying environments, and bounded domains. Lastly, we show that in general, the spreading speeds are not controlled by the ability of persistence, and conversely. However, when there is no advection term, the spreading speeds are controlled by the ability of persistence, though the converse still does not hold.

Potential flows away from stagnation in infinite cylinders

Steady incompressible potential flows of an inviscid or viscous fluid are considered in infinite N-dimensional cylinders with tangential boundary conditions. We show that such flows, if away from stagnation, are constant and parallel to the direction of the cylinder. This means equivalently that a harmonic function whose gradient is bounded away from zero in an infinite cylinder with Neumann boundary conditions is an affine function. The proof of this rigidity result uses a combination of ODE and PDE arguments, respectively for the streamlines of the flow and the harmonic potential function.

Bistable pulsating fronts in slowly oscillating environments *

We consider reaction-diffusion fronts in spatially periodic bistable media with large periods. Whereas the homogenization regime associated with small periods had been well studied for bistable or Fisher-KPP reactions and, in the latter case, a formula for the limit minimal speeds of fronts in media with large periods had also been obtained thanks to the linear formulation of these minimal speeds and their monotonicity with respect to the period, the main remaining open question is concerned with fronts in bistable environments with large periods. In bistable media the unique front speeds are not linearly determined and are not monotone with respect to the spatial period in general, making the analysis of the limit of large periods more intricate. We show in this paper the existence of and an explicit formula for the limit of bistable front speeds as the spatial period goes to infinity. We also prove that the front profiles converge to a family of front profiles associated with spatially homogeneous equations. The main results are based on uniform estimates on the spatial width of the fronts, which themselves use zero number properties and intersection arguments.

KPP transition fronts in a one-dimensional two-patch habitat

This paper is concerned with the existence of transition fronts for a one-dimensional twopatch model with KPP reaction terms. Density and flux conditions are imposed at the interface between the two patches. We first construct a pair of suitable super-and subsolutions by making full use of information of the leading edges of two KPP fronts and gluing them through the interface conditions. Then, an entire solution obtained thanks to a limiting argument is shown to be a transition front moving from one patch to the other one. This propagating solution admits asymptotic past and future speeds, and it connects two different fronts, each associated with one of the two patches. The paper thus provides the first example of a transition front for a KPP-type two-patch model with interface conditions.

Propagation phenomena in periodic patchy landscapes with interface conditions

This paper is concerned with a model for the dynamics of a single species in a one-dimensional heterogeneous environment. The environment consists of two kinds of patches, which are periodically alternately arranged along the spatial axis. We first establish the well-posedness for the Cauchy problem. Next, we give existence and uniqueness results for the positive steady state and we analyze the long-time behavior of the solutions to the evolution problem. Afterwards, based on dynamical systems methods, we investigate the spreading properties and the existence of pulsating traveling waves in the positive and negative directions. It is shown that the asymptotic spreading speed, c * , exists and coincides with the minimal wave speed of pulsating traveling waves in positive and negative directions. In particular, we give a variational formula for c * by using the principal eigenvalues of certain linear periodic eigenvalue problems.

Spreading, flattening and logarithmic lag for reaction-diffusion equations in R^N: old and new results

This paper is concerned with the large-time dynamics of bounded solutions of reaction-diffusion equations with bounded or unbounded initial support in R N. We start with a survey of some old and recent results on the spreading speeds of the solutions and their asymptotic local one-dimensional symmetry. We then derive some flattening properties of the level sets of the solutions if initially supported on subgraphs. We also investigate the special case of asymptotically conical-shaped initial conditions. Lastly, we reclaim some known results about the logarithmic lag between the position of the solutions and that of planar or spherical fronts expanding with minimal speed, for almost-planar or compactly supported initial conditions. We then prove some new logarithmic-in-time estimates of the lag of the position of the solutions with respect to that of a planar front, for initial conditions which are supported on subgraphs with logarithmic growth at infinity. These estimates entail in particular that the same lag as for compactly supported initial data holds true for a class of unbounded initial supports. The paper also contains some related conjectures and open problems.

Propagation or extinction in bistable equations: the non-monotone role of initial fragmentation

In this paper, we investigate the large-time behavior of bounded solutions of the Cauchy problem for a reaction-diffusion equation in $\mathbb{R}^N$ with bistable reaction term. We consider initial conditions that are chiefly indicator functions of bounded Borel sets. We examine how geometric transformations of the supports of these initial conditions affect the propagation or extinction of the solutions at large time. We also consider two fragmentation indices defined in the set of bounded Borel sets and we establish some propagation or extinction results when the initial supports are weakly or highly fragmented. Lastly, we show that the large-time dynamics of the solutions is not monotone with respect to the considered fragmentation indices, even for equimeasurable sets.

Front propagation through a perforated wall

We consider a bistable reaction-diffusion equation $u_t=Δu +f(u)$ on $\mathbb{R}^N$ in the presence of an obstacle $K$, which is a wall of infinite span with many holes. More precisely, $K$ is a closed subset of $\mathbb{R}^N$ with smooth boundary such that its projection onto the $x_1$-axis is bounded and that $\mathbb{R}^N \setminus K$ is connected. Our goal is to study what happens when a planar traveling front coming from $x_1 = -\infty$ meets the wall $K$.We first show that there is clear dichotomy between "propagation" and "blocking". In other words, the traveling front either passes through the wall and propagates toward $x_1=+\infty$ (propagation) or is trapped around the wall (blocking), and that there is no intermediate behavior. This dichotomy holds for any type of walls of finite thickness. Next we discuss sufficient conditions for blocking and propagation. For blocking, assuming either that $K$ is periodic in $y:=(x_2,\ldots, x_N)$ or that the holes are localized within a bounded area, we show that blocking occurs if the holes are sufficiently narrow. For propagation, three different types of sufficient conditions for propagation will be presented, namely "walls with large holes", "small-capacity walls", and "parallel-blade walls". We also discuss complete and incomplete invasions.

A Faber-Krahn inequality for the Laplacian with drift under Robin boundary condition

We prove a Faber-Krahn inequality for the Laplacian with drift under Robin boundary condition, provided that the $β$ parameter in the Robin condition is large enough. The proof relies on a compactness argument, on the convergence of Robin eigenvalues to Dirichlet eigenvalues when $β$ goes to infinity, and on a strict Faber-Krahn inequality under Dirichlet boundary condition. We also show the existence and uniqueness of drifts $v$ satisfying some $L^\infty$ constraints and minimizing or maximizing the principal eigenvalue of $-Δ+v\cdot\nabla$ in a fixed domain and with a fixed parameter $β>0$ in the Robin condition.

Asymptotic one-dimensional symmetry for the Fisher-KPP equation

Let $u$ be a solution of the Fisher-KPP equation $$ \partial_t u=Δu+f(u),\quad t>0,\ x\in\mathbb{R}^N. $$ We address the following question: does $u$ become locally planar as $t\to+\infty$ ? Namely, does $u(t_n,x_n+\cdot)$ converge locally uniformly, up to subsequences, towards a one-dimensional function, for any sequence $((t_n,x_n))_{n\in\mathbb{N}}$ in $(0,+\infty)\times\mathbb{R}^N$ such that $t_n\to+\infty$ as $n\to+\infty$ ? This question is in the spirit of a conjecture of De Giorgi for stationary solutions of Allen-Cahn equations. The answer depends on the initial datum $u_0$ of $u$. It is known to be affirmative when the support of $u_0$ is bounded or when it lies between two parallel half-spaces. Instead, the answer is negative when the support of $u_0$ is "V-shaped". We prove here that $u$ is asymptotically locally planar when the support of $u_0$ is a convex set (satisfying in addition a uniform interior ball condition), or, more generally, when it is at finite Hausdorff distance from a convex set. We actually derive the result under an even more general geometric hypothesis on the support of $u_0$. We recover in particular the aforementioned results known in the literature. We further characterize the set of directions in which $u$ is asymptotically locally planar, and we show that the asymptotic profiles are monotone. Our results apply in particular when the support of $u_0$ is the subgraph of a function with vanishing global mean.

Spreading sets and one-dimensional symmetry for reaction-diffusion equations

We consider reaction-diffusion equations $\partial_tu=Δu+f(u)$ in the whole space $\mathbb{R}^N$ and we are interested in the large-time dynamics of solutions ranging in the interval $[0,1]$, with general unbounded initial support. Under the hypothesis of the existence of a traveling front connecting $0$ and $1$ with a positive speed, we discuss the existence of spreading speeds and spreading sets, which describe the large-time global shape of the level sets of the solutions. The spreading speed in any direction is expressed as a Freidlin-Gärtner type formula. This formula holds under general assumptions on the reaction and for solutions emanating from initial conditions with general unbounded support, whereas most of earlier results were concerned with more specific reactions and compactly supported or almost-planar initial conditions. We then investigate the local properties of the level sets at large time. Some flattening properties of the level sets of the solutions, if initially supported on subgraphs, will be presented. We also investigate the special case of asymptotically conical-shaped initial conditions. For Fisher-KPP equations, we state some asymptotic local one-dimensional and monotonicity symmetry properties for the elements of the $Ω$-limit set of the solutions, in the spirit of a conjecture of De Giorgi for stationary solutions of Allen-Cahn equations. Lastly, we present some logarithmic-in-time estimates of the lag of the position of the solutions with respect to that of a planar front with minimal speed, for initial conditions which are supported on subgraphs with logarithmic growth at infinity. Some related conjectures and open problems are also listed.

Spreading speeds and spreading sets of reaction-diffusion equations

This paper deals with the large time dynamics of bounded solutions of reaction-diffusion equations with unbounded initial support in $\mathbb{R}^N$. We prove a variational formula for the spreading speeds in any direction, and we also describe the asymptotic shape of the level sets of the solutions at large time. The Freidlin-Gärtner type formula for the spreading speeds involves newly introduced notions of bounded and unbounded directions of the initial support. The results hold for a large class of reaction terms and for solutions emanating from initial conditions with general unbounded support, whereas most of earlier results were concerned with more specific reactions and compactly supported or almost-planar initial conditions. We also prove some results of independent interest on some conditions guaranteeing the spreading of solutions with large initial support and the link between these conditions and the existence of traveling fronts with positive speed. The proofs use a mix of ODE and PDE methods, as well as some geometric arguments. The results are sharp and counterexamples are shown when the assumptions are not all fulfilled.
