A survey of non-uniqueness results for the anisotropic Calder{ó}n problem with disjoint data

After giving a general introduction to the main known results on the anisotropic Calder{ó}n problem on n-dimensional compact Riemannian manifolds with boundary, we give a motivated review of some recent non-uniqueness results obtained in [5, 6] for the anisotropic Calder{ó}n problem at fixed frequency, in dimension n $\ge$ 3, when the Dirichlet and Neumann data are measured on disjoint subsets of the boundary. These non-uniqueness results are of the following nature: given a smooth compact connected Riemannian manifold with boundary (M, g) of dimension n $\ge$ 3, we first show that there exist in the conformal class of g an infinite number of Riemannian metrics gmetrics metrics g such that their corresponding Dirichlet-to-Neumann maps at a fixed frequency coincide when the Dirichlet data $Γ$D and Neumann data $Γ$N are measured on disjoint sets and satisfy $Γ$D $\cup$ $Γ$N = $\partial$M. The corresponding conformal factors satisfy a nonlinear elliptic PDE of Yamabe type on (M, g) and arise from a natural but subtle gauge invariance of the Calder{ó}n when the data are given on disjoint sets. We then present counterexamples to uniqueness in dimension n $\ge$ 3 to the anisotropic Calder{ó}n problem at fixed frequency with data on disjoint sets, which do not arise from this gauge invariance. They are given by cylindrical Riemannian manifolds with boundary having two ends, equipped with a suitably chosen warped product metric. This survey concludes with some remarks on the case of manifolds with corners.

Local inverse scattering at fixed energy in spherically symmetric asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds

In this paper, we adapt the well-known \emph{local} uniqueness results of Borg-Marchenko type in the inverse problems for one dimensional Schr{ö}dinger equation to prove \emph{local} uniqueness results in the setting of inverse \emph{metric} problems. More specifically, we consider a class of spherically symmetric manifolds having two asymptotically hyperbolic ends and study the scattering properties of massless Dirac waves evolving on such manifolds. Using the spherical symmetry of the model, the stationary scattering is encoded by a countable family of one-dimensional Dirac equations. This allows us to define the corresponding transmission coefficients $T(λ,n)$ and reflection coefficients $L(λ,n)$ and $R(λ,n)$ of a Dirac wave having a fixed energy $λ$ and angular momentum $n$. For instance, the reflection coefficients $L(λ,n)$ correspond to the scattering experiment in which a wave is sent from the \emph{left} end in the remote past and measured in the same left end in the future. The main result of this paper is an inverse uniqueness result local in nature. Namely, we prove that for a fixed $λ\not=0$, the knowledge of the reflection coefficients $L(λ,n)$ (resp. $R(λ,n)$) - up to a precise error term of the form $O(e^{-2nB})$ with $B\textgreater{}0$ - determines the manifold in a neighbourhood of the left (resp. right) end, the size of this neighbourhood depending on the magnitude $B$ of the error term. The crucial ingredients in the proof of this result are the Complex Angular Momentum method as well as some useful uniqueness results for Laplace transforms.

Inverse scattering at fixed energy on asymptotically hyperbolic Liouville surfaces

In this paper, we study an inverse scattering problem on Liouville surfaces having two asymptotically hyperbolic ends. The main property of Liouville surfaces consists in the complete separability of the Hamilton-Jacobi equations for the geodesic flow. An important related consequence is the fact that the stationary wave equation can be separated into a system of a radial and angular ODEs. The full scattering matrix at fixed energy associated to a scalar wave equation on asymptotically hyperbolic Liouville surfaces can be thus simplified by considering its restrictions onto the generalized harmonics corresponding to the angular separated ODE. The resulting partial scattering matrices consists in a countable set of $2 \times 2$ matrices whose coefficients are the so called transmission and reflection coefficients. It is shown that the reflection coefficients are nothing but generalized Weyl-Titchmarsh functions for the radial ODE in which the generalized angular momentum is seen as the spectral parameter. Using the Complex Angular Momentum method and recent results on 1D inverse problem from generalized Weyl-Titchmarsh functions, we show that the knowledge of the reflection operators at a fixed non zero energy is enough to determine uniquely the metric of the asymptotically hyperbolic Liouville surface under consideration.

Direct and inverse scattering at fixed energy for massless charged Dirac fields by Kerr-Newman-de Sitter black holes

In this paper, we study the direct and inverse scattering theory at fixed energy for massless charged Dirac fields evolving in the exterior region of a Kerr-Newman-de Sitter black hole. In the first part, we establish the existence and asymptotic completeness of time-dependent wave operators associated to our Dirac fields. This leads to the definition of the time-dependent scattering operator that encodes the far-field behavior (with respect to a stationary observer) in the asymptotic regions of the black hole: the event and cosmological horizons. We also use the miraculous property (quoting Chandrasekhar) - that the Dirac equation can be separated into radial and angular ordinary differential equations - to make the link between the time-dependent scattering operator and its stationary counterpart. This leads to a nice expression of the scattering matrix at fixed energy in terms of stationary solutions of the system of separated equations. In a second part, we use this expression of the scattering matrix to study the uniqueness property in the associated inverse scattering problem at fixed energy. Using essentially the particular form of the angular equation (that can be solved explicitely by Frobenius method) and the Complex Angular Momentum technique on the radial equation, we are finally able to determine uniquely the metric of the black hole from the knowledge of the scattering matrix at a fixed energy.

A new Levinson's theorem for potentials with critical decay

We study the low-energy asymptotics of the spectral shift function for Schrödinger operators with potentials decaying like $O(\frac{1}{|x|^2})$. We prove a generalized Levinson's for this class of potentials in presence of zero eigenvalue and zero resonance.

Inverse scattering at fixed energy in de Sitter-Reissner-Nordström black holes

In this paper, we consider massless Dirac fields propagating in the outer region of de Sitter-Reissner-Nordström black holes. We show that the metric of such black holes is uniquely determined by the partial knowledge of the corresponding scattering matrix $S(λ)$ at a fixed energy $λ\ne 0$. More precisely, we consider the partial wave scattering matrices $S(λ,n)$ (here $λ\ne 0$ is the fixed energy and $n \in \N^*$ denotes the angular momentum) defined as the restrictions of the full scattering matrix on a well chosen basis of spin-weighted spherical harmonics. We prove that the mass $M$, the square of the charge $Q^2$ and the cosmological constant $Λ$ of a dS-RN black hole (and thus its metric) can be uniquely determined from the knowledge of either the transmission coefficients $T(λ, n)$, or the reflexion coefficients $R(λ, n)$ (resp. $L(λ, n)$), for all $n \in {\mathcal{L}}$ where $\mathcal{L}$ is a subset of $\N^*$ that satisfies the Müntz condition $\sum_{n \in {\mathcal{L}}} \frac{1}{n} = +\infty$. Our main tool consists in complexifying the angular momentum $n$ and in studying the analytic properties of the "unphysical" scattering matrix $S(λ,z)$ in the complex variable $z$. We show in particular that the quantities $\frac{1}{T(λ,z)}$, $\frac{R(λ,z)}{T(λ,z)}$ and $\frac{L(λ,z)}{T(λ,z)}$ belong to the Nevanlinna class in the region $\{z \in \C, \ Re(z) >0 \}$ for which we have analytic uniqueness theorems at our disposal. Eventually, as a by-product of our method, we obtain reconstrution formulae for the surface gravities of the event and cosmological horizons of the black hole which have an important physical meaning in the Hawking effect.

Inverse scattering in de Sitter-Reissner-Nordström black hole spacetimes

In this paper, we study the inverse scattering of massive charged Dirac fields in the exterior region of (de Sitter)-Reissner-Nordström black holes. First we obtain a precise high-energy asymptotic expansion of the diagonal elements of the scattering matrix (i.e. of the transmission coefficients) and we show that the leading terms of this expansion allows to recover uniquely the mass, the charge and the cosmological constant of the black hole. Second, in the case of nonzero cosmological constant, we show that the knowledge of the reflection coefficients of the scattering matrix on any interval of energy also permits to recover uniquely these parameters.

Recovering the mass and the charge of a Reissner-Nordström black hole by an inverse scattering experiment

In this paper, we study inverse scattering of massless Dirac fields that propagate in the exterior region of a Reissner-Nordström black hole. Using a stationary approach we determine precisely the leading terms of the high-energy asymptotic expansion of the scattering matrix that, in turn, permit us to recover uniquely the mass of the black hole and its charge up to a sign.

An inverse scattering problem for the Schrödinger equation in a semiclassical process

We study an inverse scattering problem for a pair of Hamiltonians $(H(h), H\_0 (h))$ on $L^2 (\r^n)$, where $H\_0 (h) = -h^2 Δ$ and $H (h)= H\_0 (h) +V$, $V$ is a short-range potential with a regular behaviour at infinity and $h$ is the semiclassical parameter. We show that, in dimension $n \geq 3$, the knowledge of the scattering operators $S(h)$, $h \in ]0, 1]$, up to $O(h^\infty)$ in ${\cal{B}} (L^2(\r^n))$, and which are localized near a fixed energy $λ>0$, determine the potential $V$ at infinity.

An inverse scattering problem for short-range systems in a time-periodic electric field

We consider the time-dependent Hamiltonian $H(t)= {1 \over 2} p^2 -E(t) \cdot x + V(t,x)$ on $L^2(R^n)$, where the external electric field $E(t)$ and the short-range electric potential $V(t,x)$ are time-periodic with the same period. It is well-known that the short-range notion depends on the mean value $E\_0$ of the external field. When $E\_0=0$, we show that the high energy limit of the scattering operators determines uniquely $V(t,x)$. In the other case, the same result holds in dimension $n \geq 3$ for generic sghort-range potentials. In dimension 2, one has to assume a stronger decay on the electric potential.
