Estimators of Long-Memory: Fourier versus Wavelets

There have been a number of papers written on semi-parametric estimation methods of the long-memory exponent of a time series, some applied, others theoretical. Some using Fourier methods, others using a wavelet-based technique. In this paper, we compare the Fourier and wavelet approaches to the local regression method and to the local Whittle method. We provide an overview of these methods, describe what has been done, indicate the available results and the conditions under which they hold. We discuss their relative strengths and weaknesses both from a practical and a theoretical perspective. We also include a simulation-based comparison. The software written to support this work is available on demand and we illustrate its use at the end of the paper.

Frequency estimation based on the cumulated Lomb-Scargle periodogram

We consider the problem of estimating the period of an unknown periodic function observed in additive noise sampled at irregularly spaced time instants in a semiparametric setting. To solve this problem, we propose a novel estimator based on the cumulated Lomb-Scargle periodogram. We prove that this estimator is consistent, asymptotically Gaussian and we provide an explicit expression of the asymptotic variance. Some Monte-Carlo experiments are then presented to support our claims.

Estimation of the Memory Parameter of the Infinite Source Poisson Process

Long-range dependence induced by heavy tails is a widely reported feature of internet traffic. Long-range dependence can be defined as the regular variation of the variance of the integrated process, and half the index of regular variation is then referred to as the Hurst index. The infinite-source Poisson process (a particular case of which is the $M/G/\infty$ queue) is a simple and popular model with this property, when the tail of the service time distribution is regularly varying. The Hurst index of the infinite-source Poisson process is then related to the index of regular variation of the service times. In this paper, we present a wavelet-based estimator of the Hurst index of this process, when it is observed either continuously or discretely over an increasing time interval. Our estimator is shown to be consistent and robust to some form of non-stationarity. Its rate of convergence is investigated.

On the existence of some ARCH($\infty$) processes

A new sufficient condition for the existence of a stationary causal solution of an ARCH($\infty$) equation is provided. This condition allows to consider polynomially decaying coefficients, so that it can be applied to the so-called FIGARCH processes, whose existence is thus proved.

On the spectral density of the wavelet coefficients of long memory time series with application to the log-regression estimation of the memory parameter

In the recent years, methods to estimate the memory parameter using wavelet analysis have gained popularity in many areas of science. Despite its widespread use, a rigorous semi-parametric asymptotic theory, comparable to the one developed for Fourier methods, is still missing. In this contribution, we adapt the classical semi-parametric framework introduced by Robinson and his co-authors for estimating the memory parameter of a (possibly) non-stationary process. As an application, we obtain minimax upper bounds for the log-scale regression estimator of the memory parameter for a Gaussian process and we derive an explicit expression of its variance.

On recursive estimation for time varying autoregressive processes

This paper focuses on recursive estimation of time varying autoregressive processes in a nonparametric setting. The stability of the model is revisited and uniform results are provided when the time-varying autoregressive parameters belong to appropriate smoothness classes. An adequate normalization for the correction term used in the recursive estimation procedure allows for very mild assumptions on the innovations distributions. The rate of convergence of the pointwise estimates is shown to be minimax in $β$-Lipschitz classes for $0<β\leq1$. For $1<β\leq 2$, this property no longer holds. This can be seen by using an asymptotic expansion of the estimation error. A bias reduction method is then proposed for recovering the minimax rate.

Nonparametric estimation of mixing densities for discrete distributions

By a mixture density is meant a density of the form $π_μ(\cdot)=\intπ_θ(\cdot)\timesμ(dθ)$, where $(π_θ)_{θ\inΘ}$ is a family of probability densities and $μ$ is a probability measure on $Θ$. We consider the problem of identifying the unknown part of this model, the mixing distribution $μ$, from a finite sample of independent observations from $π_μ$. Assuming that the mixing distribution has a density function, we wish to estimate this density within appropriate function classes. A general approach is proposed and its scope of application is investigated in the case of discrete distributions. Mixtures of power series distributions are more specifically studied. Standard methods for density estimation, such as kernel estimators, are available in this context, and it has been shown that these methods are rate optimal or almost rate optimal in balls of various smoothness spaces. For instance, these results apply to mixtures of the Poisson distribution parameterized by its mean. Estimators based on orthogonal polynomial sequences have also been proposed and shown to achieve similar rates. The general approach of this paper extends and simplifies such results. For instance, it allows us to prove asymptotic minimax efficiency over certain smoothness classes of the above-mentioned polynomial estimator in the Poisson case. We also study discrete location mixtures, or discrete deconvolution, and mixtures of discrete uniform distributions.
