Iterated random walks in random scenery (PAPAPA)

We establish a limit theorem for a new model of 3-dimensional random walk in an inhomogeneous lattice with random orientations. This model can be seen as a 3dimensional version of the Matheron and de Marsily model [12]. This new model leads us naturally to the study of iterated random walk in random scenery, which is a new process that can be described as a random walk in random scenery evolving in a second random scenery. We use the french acronym PAPAPA for this new process and answer a question about its stochastic behaviour asked about twenty years ago by St{é}phane Le Borgne.

Limit theorems and lack thereof for a multilayer random walk mimicking human mobility

We introduce a continuous-time random walk model on an infinite multilayer structure inspired by transportation networks. Each layer is a copy of $\mathbb{R}^d$, indexed by a non-negative integer. A walker moves within a layer by means of an inertial displacement whose speed is a deterministic function of the layer index and whose direction and duration are random, but with a timescale that depends on the layer. After each inertial displacement, the walker may randomly shift level, up or down, independently of its past. The multilayer structure is hierarchical, in the sense that the speed is a nondecreasing function of the layer index. Our primary focus is on the diffusive properties of the system. Under a natural condition on the parameters of the model, we establish a functional central limit theorem for the $\mathbb{R}^d$-coordinate of the process. By contrast, in a class of examples where this condition is violated, we are able to determine the correct scaling of the process while proving that no limit theorem holds.

Strong mixing for the periodic Lorentz gas flow with infinite horizon

We establish strong mixing for the $\mathbb Z^d$-periodic, infinite horizon, Lorentz gas flow for continuous observables with compact support. The essential feature of this natural class of observables is that their support may contain points with infinite free flights. Dealing with such a class of functions is a serious challenge and there is no analogue of it in the finite horizon case. The mixing result for the aforementioned class of functions is obtained via new results: 1) mixing for continuous observables with compact support consisting of configurations at a bounded time from the closest collision; 2) a tightness-type result that allows us to control the configurations with long free flights. To prove 1), we establish a mixing local limit theorem for the Sinai billiard flow with infinite horizon, previously an open question.

Limit theorems for Birkhoff sums and local times of the periodic Lorentz gas with infinite horizon

This work is a contribution to the study of the ergodic and stochastic properties of Z^d-periodic dynamical systems preserving an infinite measure. We establish functional limit theorems for natural Birkhoff sums related to local times of the Z^d-periodic Lorentz gas with infinite horizon, for both the collision map and the flow. In particular, our results apply to the difference between the numbers of collisions in two different cells. Because of the Z^d-periodicity of the model we are interested in, these Birkhoff sums can be rewritten as additive functionals of a Birkhoff sum of the Sinai billiard. For completness and in view of future studies, we state a general result of convergence of additive functionals of Birkhoff sums of chaotic probability preserving dynamical systems under general assumptions.

Quantitative recurrence for $T,T^{-1}$ tranformation

We are interested in the study of the asymptotic behaviour of return times in small balls for the $T,T^{-1}$-transformation. We exhibit different asymptotic behaviours (different scaling, different limit point process) depending on the respective dimensions of the measures of the two underlying dynamical systems. It behaves either as for the direct product of the underlying systems, or as for the Z-extension of the driving system (also studied in this article), or as a more sophisticated process.

Expansions in the local and the central limit theorems for dynamical systems

We study higher order expansions both in the Berry-Esséen estimate (Edgeworth expansions) and in the local limit theorems for Birkhoff sums of chaotic probability preserving dynamical systems. We establish general results under technical assumptions, discuss the verification of these assumptions and illustrate our results by different examples (subshifts of finite type, Young towers, Sinai billiards, random matrix products), including situations of unbounded observables with integrability order arbitrarily close to the optimal moment condition required in the i.i.d. setting.

Application of the convergence of the spatio-temporal processes for visits to small sets

The goal of this article is to point out the importance of spatio-temporal processes in different questions of quantitative recurrence. We focus on applications to the study of the number of visits to a small set before the first visit to another set (question arising from a previous work by Kifer and Rapaport), the study of high records, the study of line processes, the study of the time spent by a flow in a small set. We illustrate these applications by results on billiards or geodesic flows. This paper contains in particular new result of convergence in distribution of the spatio temporal processes associated to visits by the Sinai billiard flow to a small neighbourhood of orbitrary points in the billiard domain.

Central limit theorems for the $\mathbb{Z}^2$-periodic Lorentz gas

This paper is devoted to the study of the stochastic properties of dynamical systems preserving an infinite measure. More precisely we prove central limit theorems for Birkhoff sums of observables of $\mathbb{Z}^2$-extensions of dynamical systems (satisfying some nice spectral properties). The motivation of our paper is the $\mathbb{Z}^2$-periodic Lorentz process for which we establish a functional central limit theorem for Hölder continuous observables (in discrete time as well as in continuous time).

Probabilistic potential theory and induction of dynamical systems

In this article, we outline a version of a balayage formula in probabilistic potential theory adapted to measure-preserving dynamical systems. This balayage identity generalizes the property that induced maps preserve the restriction of the original invariant measure. As an application, we prove in some cases the invariance under induction of the Green-Kubo formula, as well as the invariance of a new degree 3 invariant.

Convergence to $α$-stable Lévy motion for chaotic billiards with several cusps at flat points

We consider billiards with several possibly non-isometric and asymmetric cusps at flat points; the case of a single symmetric cusp was studied previously in Zhang (2017) and Jung & Zhang (2018). In particular, we show that properly normalized Birkhoff sums of Hölder observables, with respect to the billiard map, converge in Skorokhod's $M_1$-topology to an $α$-stable Lévy motion, where $α$ depends on the `curvature' of the flattest points and the skewness parameter $ξ$ depends on the values of the observable at those same points. Previously, Jung & Zhang (2018) proved convergence of the one-point marginals to totally skewed $α$-stable distributions for a single symmetric cusp. The limits we prove here are stronger, since they are in the functional sense, but also allow for more varied behaviour due to the presence of multiple cusps. In particular, the general limits we obtain allow for any skewness parameter, as opposed to just the totally skewed cases. We also show that convergence in the stronger $J_1$-topology is not possible.

Persistence probabilities for stationary increment processes

We study the persistence probability for processes with stationary increments. Our results apply to a number of examples: sums of stationary correlated random variables whose scaling limit is fractional Brownian motion, random walks in random sceneries, random processes in Brownian scenery, and the Matheron-de Marsily model in Z^2 with random orientations of the horizontal layers. Using a new approach, strongly related to the study of the range, we obtain an upper bound of optimal order in the general case and improved lower bounds (compared to previous literature) for many processes.

Continuous-time random walk between Lévy-spaced targets in the real line

We consider a continuous-time random walk which is defined as an interpolation of a random walk on a point process on the real line. The distances between neighboring points of the point process are i.i.d. random variables in the normal domain of attraction of an $α$-stable distribution with $0 < α< 1$. This is therefore an example of a random walk in a Lévy random medium. Specifically, it is a generalization of a process known in the physical literature as Lévy-Lorentz gas. We prove that the annealed version of the process is superdiffusive with scaling exponent $1/(α+ 1)$ and identify the limiting process, which is not càdlàg. The proofs are based on the technique of Kesten and Spitzer for random walks in random scenery.

Spatio-temporal Poisson processes for visits to small sets

For many measure preserving dynamical systems $(Ω,T,m)$ the successive hitting times to a small set is well approximated by a Poisson process on the real line. In this work we define a new process obtained from recording not only the successive times $n$ of visits to a set $A$, but also the position $T^n(x)$ in $A$ of the orbit, in the limit where $m(A)\to0$. We obtain a convergence of this process, suitably normalized, to a Poisson point process in time and space under some decorrelation condition. We present several new applications to hyperbolic maps and SRB measures, including the case of a neighborhood of a periodic point, and some billiards such as Sinai billiards, Bunimovich stadium and diamond billiard.

Mixing and decorrelation in infinite measure: the case of the periodic sinai billiard

We investigate the question of the rate of mixing for observables of a Z d-extension of a probability preserving dynamical system with good spectral properties. We state general mixing results, including expansions of every order. The main part of this article is devoted to the study of mixing rate for smooth observables of the Z 2-periodic Sinai billiard, with different kinds of results depending on whether the horizon is finite or infinite. We establish a first order mixing result when the horizon is infinite. In the finite horizon case, we establish an asymptotic expansion of every order, enabling the study of the mixing rate even for observables with null integrals.
