Implosion, Contraction and Moore-Tachikawa

We give a survey of the implosion construction, extending some of its aspects relating to hypertoric geometry from type $A$ to a general reductive group, and interpret it in the context of the Moore-Tachikawa category. We use these ideas to discuss how the contraction construction in symplectic geometry can be generalised to the hyperk\"ahler or complex symplectic situation.

Non-reductive geometric invariant theory and hyperbolicity

The Green--Griffiths--Lang and Kobayashi hyperbolicity conjectures for generic hypersurfaces of polynomial degree are proved using intersection theory for non-reductive geometric invariant theoretic quotients and recent work of Riedl and Yang.

Moment maps and cohomology of non-reductive quotients

Let $H$ be a complex linear algebraic group with internally graded unipotent radical acting on a complex projective variety $X$. Given an ample linearisation of the action and an associated Fubini-Study Kähler form which is invariant for a maximal compact subgroup $Q$ of $H$, we define a notion of moment map for the action of $H$, and under suitable conditions (that the linearisation is well-adapted and semistability coincides with stability) we describe the (non-reductive) GIT quotient $X/\!/H$ introduced by Bérczi, Doran, Hawes and Kirwan in terms of this moment map. Using this description we derive formulas for the Betti numbers of $X/\!/H$ and express the rational cohomology ring of $X/\!/H$ in terms of the rational cohomology ring of the GIT quotient $X/\!/T^H$, where $T^H$ is a maximal torus in $H$. We relate intersection pairings on $X/\!/H$ to intersection pairings on $X/\!/T^H$, obtaining a residue formula for these pairings on $X/\!/H$ analogous to the residue formula of Jeffrey-Kirwan. As an application, we announce a proof of the Green-Griffiths-Lang and Kobayashi conjectures for projective hypersurfaces with polynomial degree.

Orthosymplectic Implosions

We propose quivers for Coulomb branch constructions of universal implosions for orthogonal and symplectic groups, extending the work on special unitary groups in arXiv:2004.09620. The quivers are unitary-orthosymplectic as opposed to the purely unitary quivers in the A-type case. Where possible we check our proposals using Hilbert series techniques.

We describe an extension of Morse theory to smooth functions on compact Riemannian manifolds, without any nondegeneracy assumptions except that the critical locus must have only finitely many connected components.

Projective completions of graded unipotent quotients

The aim of this paper is to show that classical geometric invariant theory (GIT) has an effective analogue for linear actions of a non-reductive algebraic group $H$ with graded unipotent radical on a projective scheme $X$. Here the linear action of $H$ is required to extend to a semi-direct product $\hat{H} = H \rtimes \mathbb{G}_m$ with a multiplicative one-parameter group which acts on the Lie algebra of the unipotent radical $U$ of $H$ with all weights strictly positive, and which centralises a Levi subgroup $R \cong H/U$ of $H$. We show that $X$ has an $H$-invariant open subscheme (the 'hat-stable locus') which has a geometric quotient by the $H$-action. This geometric quotient has a projective completion which is a categorical quotient (indeed, a good quotient) by $\hat{H}$ of an open subscheme of a blow-up of the product of $X$ with the affine line; with additional blow-ups a projective completion which is itself a geometric quotient can be obtained. Furthermore the hat-stable locus of $X$ and the corresponding open subsets of the blow-ups of the product of $X$ with the affine line can be described effectively using Hilbert-Mumford-like criteria combined with the explicit blow-up constructions. Applications include the construction of moduli spaces of sheaves and Higgs bundles of fixed Harder--Narasimhan type over a fixed nonsingular projective scheme, and of moduli spaces of unstable projective curves of fixed singularity. More recently, cohomology theory for reductive GIT quotients were extended by the first and fourth author to the non-reductive situation studied in this paper, and this was used to prove the Green--Griffiths--Lang and Kobayashi hyperbolicity conjectures for generic projective hypersurfaces with polynomial bounds on their degree.

Geometric invariant theory for graded unipotent groups and applications

Let $U$ be a graded unipotent group over the complex numbers, in the sense that it has an extension $\hat{U}$ by the multiplicative group such that the action of the multiplicative group by conjugation on the Lie algebra of $U$ has all its weights strictly positive. Given any action of $U$ on a projective variety $X$ extending to an action of $\hat{U}$ which is linear with respect to an ample line bundle on $X$, then provided that one is willing to replace the line bundle with a tensor power and to twist the linearisation of the action of $\hat{U}$ by a suitable (rational) character, and provided an additional condition is satisfied which is the analogue of the condition in classical GIT that there should be no strictly semistable points for the action, we show that the $\hat{U}$-invariants form a finitely generated graded algebra; moreover the natural morphism from the semistable subset of $X$ to the enveloping quotient is surjective and expresses the enveloping quotient as a geometric quotient of the semistable subset. Applying this result with $X$ replaced by its product with the projective line gives us a projective variety which is a geometric quotient by $\hat{U}$ of an invariant open subset of the product of $X$ with the affine line and contains as an open subset a geometric quotient of a U-invariant open subset of $X$ by the action of $U$. Furthermore these open subsets of $X$ and its product with the affine line can be described using criteria similar to the Hilbert-Mumford criteria in classical GIT.

Symplectic quotients of unstable Morse strata for normsquares of moment maps

Let K be a compact Lie group and fix an invariant inner product on its Lie algebra. Given a Hamiltonian action of K on a compact symplectic manifold X, the normsquare of the moment map defines a Morse stratification of X by locally closed symplectic submanifolds such that the stratum to which any x in X belongs is determined by the limiting behaviour of its downwards trajectory under the gradient flow with respect to a suitably compatible Riemannian metric on X. The open stratum indexed by 0 retracts K-equivariantly via this gradient flow to the minimum which is the zero-locus of the moment map (if this is not empty). The usual 'symplectic quotient' for the action of K on any other stratum is empty. Nonetheless, motivated by recent results in non-reductive geometric invariant theory, we find that the symplectic quotient construction can be modified to provide natural 'symplectic quotients' for the unstable strata labelled by nonzero indices. There is an analogous infinite-dimensional picture for the Yang--Mills functional over a Riemann surface with strata determined by Harder-Narasimhan type.

Variation of Non-reductive Geometric Invariant Theory

The wall-and-chamber structure of the dependence of the reductive GIT quotient on the choice of linearisation is well known. In this article, we first give a brief survey of recent results in non-reductive GIT, which apply when the unipotent radical is 'graded'. We then examine the dependence of these non-reductive quotients on the linearisation and an additional parameter, the choice of one-parameter subgroup grading the unipotent radical, and arrive at a picture similar to the reductive one.

Stratifying quotient stacks and moduli stacks

Recent results in geometric invariant theory (GIT) for non-reductive linear algebraic group actions allow us to stratify quotient stacks of the form [X/H], where X is a projective scheme and H is a linear algebraic group with internally graded unipotent radical acting linearly on X, in such a way that each stratum [S/H] has a geometric quotient S/H. This leads to stratifications of moduli stacks (for example, sheaves over a projective scheme) such that each stratum has a coarse moduli space.

Graded linearisations

When the action of a reductive group on a projective variety has a suitable linearisation, Mumford's geometric invariant theory (GIT) can be used to construct and study an associated quotient variety. In this article we describe how Mumford's GIT can be extended effectively to suitable actions of linear algebraic groups which are not necessarily reductive, with the extra data of a graded linearisation for the action. Any linearisation in the traditional sense for a reductive group action induces a graded linearisation in a natural way. The classical examples of moduli spaces which can be constructed using Mumford's GIT are moduli spaces of stable curves and of (semi)stable bundles over a fixed nonsingular curve. This more general construction can be used to construct moduli spaces of unstable objects, such as unstable curves or unstable bundles (with suitable fixed discrete invariants in each case, related to their singularities or Harder--Narasimhan type).

Constructing quotients of algebraic varieties by linear algebraic group actions

In this article we review the question of constructing geometric quotients of actions of linear algebraic groups on irreducible varieties over algebraically closed fields of characteristic zero, in the spirit of Mumford's geometric invariant theory (GIT). The article surveys some recent work on geometric invariant theory and quotients of varieties by linear algebraic group actions, as well as background material on linear algebraic groups, Mumford's GIT and some of the challenges that the non-reductive setting presents. The earlier work of two of the authors in the setting of unipotent group actions is extended to deal with actions of any linear algebraic group. Given the data of a linearisation for an action of a linear algebraic group H on an irreducible variety $X$, an open subset of stable points $X^s$ is defined which admits a geometric quotient variety $X^s/H$. We construct projective completions of the quotient $X^s/H$ by considering a suitable extension of the group action to an action of a reductive group on a reductive envelope and using Mumford's GIT. In good cases one can also compute the stable locus $X^s$ in terms of stability (in the sense of Mumford for reductive groups) for the reductive envelope.

Graded unipotent groups and Grosshans theory

Let $U$ be a unipotent group which is graded in the sense that it has an extension $H$ by the multiplicative group of the complex numbers such that all the weights of the adjoint action on the Lie algebra of $U$ are strictly positive. We study embeddings of $H$ in a general linear group $G$ which possess Grosshans-like properties. More precisely, suppose $H$ acts on a projective variety $X$ and its action extends to an action of $G$ which is linear with respect to an ample line bundle on $X$. Then, provided that we are willing to twist the linearisation of the action of $H$ by a suitable (rational) character of $H$, we find that the $H$-invariants form a finitely generated algebra and hence define a projective variety $X/\!/H$; moreover the natural morphism from the semistable locus in $X$ to $X/\!/H$ is surjective, and semistable points in $X$ are identified in $X/\!/H$ if and only if the closures of their $H$-orbits meet in the semistable locus. A similar result applies when we replace $X$ by its product with the projective line; this gives us a projective completion of a geometric quotient of a $U$-invariant open subset of $X$ by the action of the unipotent group $U$.

A multiplicative analogue of complex symplectic implosion

We introduce a multiplicative version of complex-symplectic implosion in the case of $SL(n, \C)$. The universal multiplicative implosion for $SL(n, \C)$ is an affine variety and can be viewed as a nonreductive geometric invariant theory quotient. It carries a torus action. and reductions by this action give the Steinberg fibres of $SL(n, \C)$. We also explain how the real symplectic group-valued universal implosion introduced by Hurtubise, Jeffrey and Sjamaar may be identified inside this space.

Twistor spaces for hyperkaehler implosions

We study the geometry of the twistor space of the universal hyperkaehler implosion Q for SU(n). Using the description of Q as a hyperkaehler quiver variety, we construct a holomorphic map from the twistor space Z_Q of Q to a complex vector bundle over P^1, and an associated map of Q to the affine space R of the bundle's holomorphic sections. The map from Q to R is shown to be injective and equivariant for the action of SU(n) x T^{n-1} x SU(2). Both maps, from Q and from Z_Q, are described in detail for n=2 and n=3. We explain how the maps are built from the fundamental irreducible representations of SU(n) and the hypertoric variety associated to the hyperplane arrangement given by the root planes in the Lie algebra of the maximal torus. This indicates that the constructions might extend to universal hyperkaehler implosions for other compact groups.

Symplectic and hyperkahler implosion

We review the quiver descriptions of symplectic and hyperkähler implosion in the case of SU(n) actions. We give quiver descriptions of symplectic implosion for other classical groups, and discuss some of the issues involved in obtaining a similar description for hyperkähler implosion.
