Abelian varieties genuinely of $\mathrm{GL}_n$-type

A simple abelian variety $A$ defined over a number field $k$ is called of $\mathrm{GL}_n$-type if there exists a number field of degree $2\dim(A)/n$ which is a subalgebra of $\mathrm{End}^0(A)$. We say that $A$ is genuinely of $\mathrm{GL}_n$-type if its base change $A_{\overline{k}}$ contains no isogeny factor of $\mathrm{GL}_m$-type for $m<n$. This generalizes the classical notion of abelian variety of $\mathrm{GL}_2$-type without potential complex multiplication introduced by Ribet. We develop a theory of building blocks, inner twists and nebentypes for these varieties. When the center of $\mathrm{End}^0(A)$ is totally real, Chi, Banaszak, Gajda, and Krasoń have attached to $A$ a compatible system of Galois representations of degree $n$ which is either symplectic or orthogonal. We extend their results under the weaker assumption that the center of $\mathrm{End}^0(A_{\overline{k}})$ be totally real. We conclude the article by showing an explicit family of abelian fourfolds genuinely of $\mathrm{GL}_4$-type. This involves the construction of a family of genus 2 curves defined over a quadratic field whose Jacobian has trivial endomorphism ring and is isogenous to its Galois conjugate.

Abelian threefolds with imaginary multiplication

Let $A$ be an abelian threefold defined over a number field $K$ with potential multiplication by an imaginary quadratic field $M$. Under mild assumptions on $K$, if $A$ has signature $(2,1)$ and the multiplication by $M$ is defined over $KM$, we attach to $A$ an elliptic curve defined over $K$ with potential complex multiplication by $M$, whose attached Galois representation is determined by the Hecke character associated to the determinant of the compatible system of $λ$-adic representations of $A$. We deduce that if the geometric endomorphism algebra of $A$ is an imaginary quadratic field, then it necessarily has class number bounded by $[KM:M]$.

Geometrically simple counterexamples to a local-global principle for quadratic twists

Two abelian varieties $A$ and $B$ over a number field $K$ are said to be strongly locally quadratic twists if they are quadratic twists at every completion of $K$. While it was known that this does not imply that $A$ and $B$ are quadratic twists over $K$, the only known counterexamples (necessarily of dimension $\geq 4$) are not geometrically simple. We show that, for every prime $p\equiv 13 \pmod{24}$, there exists a pair of geometrically simple abelian varieties of dimension $p-1$ over $\mathbb{Q}$ that are strongly locally quadratic twists but not quadratic twists. The proof is based on Galois cohomology computations and class field theory.

Frobenius sign separation for abelian varieties

Let A and A' be nonzero abelian varieties defined over a number field k such that Hom(A,A')=0. Under the Generalized Riemann hypothesis for motivic L-functions attached to A and A', we show that there exists a prime p of k of good reduction for A and A' at which the Frobenius traces of A and A' are nonzero and differ by sign, and such that the norm of p is O_{k,g,g'}(log(2NN')^2), where N and N' respectively denote the absolute conductors of A and A'. We also make the dependence of the big-O constant on k and the dimensions g,g' of A,A' explicit up to an effectively computable absolute constant. Our method extends that of Chen, Park, and Swaminathan who considered the case in which A and A' are elliptic curves.

A local-global principle for polyquadratic twists of abelian surfaces

We say that two abelian varieties $A$ and $A'$ defined over a field $F$ are polyquadratic twists if they are isogenous over a Galois extension of $F$ whose Galois group has exponent dividing $2$. Let $A$ and $A'$ be abelian varieties defined over a number field $K$ of dimension $g\geq 1$. In this article we prove that, if $g\leq 2$, then $A$ and $A'$ are polyquadratic twists if and only if for almost all primes $\p$ of $K$ their reductions modulo $\p$ are polyquadratic twists. We exhibit a counterexample to this local-global principle for $g=3$. This work builds on a geometric analogue by Khare and Larsen, and on a similar criterion for quadratic twists established by Fité, relying itself on the works by Rajan and Ramakrishnan.

Effective Sato-Tate conjecture for abelian varieties and applications

From the generalized Riemann hypothesis for motivic L-functions, we derive an effective version of the Sato-Tate conjecture for an abelian variety A defined over a number field k with connected Sato-Tate group. By effective we mean that we give an upper bound on the error term in the count predicted by the Sato-Tate measure that only depends on certain invariants of A. We discuss three applications of this conditional result. First, for an abelian variety defined over k, we consider a variant of Linnik's problem for abelian varieties that asks for an upper bound on the least norm of a prime whose normalized Frobenius trace lies in a given interval. Second, for an elliptic curve defined over k with complex multiplication, we determine (up to multiplication by a nonzero constant) the asymptotic number of primes whose Frobenius trace attain the integral part of the Hasse-Weil bound. Third, for a pair of abelian varieties defined over k with no common factors up to k-isogeny, we find an upper bound on the least norm of a prime at which the respective Frobenius traces have opposite sign.

Sato-Tate groups of abelian threefolds

Given an abelian variety over a number field, its Sato-Tate group is a compact Lie group which conjecturally controls the distribution of Euler factors of the L-function of the abelian variety. It was previously shown by Fité, Kedlaya, Rotger, and Sutherland that there are 52 groups (up to conjugation) that occur as Sato-Tate groups of abelian surfaces over number fields; we show here that for abelian threefolds, there are 410 possible Sato-Tate groups, of which 33 are maximal with respect to inclusions of finite index. We enumerate candidate groups using the Hodge-theoretic construction of Sato-Tate groups, the classification of degree-3 finite linear groups by Blichfeldt, Dickson, and Miller, and a careful analysis of Shimura's theory of CM types that rules out 23 candidate groups; we cross-check this using extensive computations in Gap, SageMath, and Magma. To show that these 410 groups all occur, we exhibit explicit examples of abelian threefolds realizing each of the 33 maximal groups; we also compute moments of the corresponding distributions and numerically confirm that they are consistent with the statistics of the associated L-functions.

Ordinary primes for some varieties with extra endomorphisms

Let A be an abelian variety defined over a number field and of dimension g. When g<3, by the recent work of Sawin, we know the exact (nonzero) value of the density of the set of primes which are ordinary for A. In higher dimension very little is known. We show that if g=3 and A has multiplication by an imaginary quadratic field E, then there exists a nonzero density set of ordinary primes for A. We reach the same conclusion if g=4 and the pair (A,E) has signature (2,2). We also obtain partial results when g=3 and A has multiplication by a totally real cubic field. We show that our methods also apply to certain abelian varieties of Albert type IV of higher dimension. These results are derived from an extended version of the l-adic methods of Katz, Ogus, and Serre in the presence of extra endomorphisms.

Endomorphism algebras of geometrically split abelian surfaces over $\mathbb{Q}$

We determine the set of geometric endomorphism algebras of geometrically split abelian surfaces defined over $\mathbb{Q}$. In particular we find that this set has cardinality 92. The essential part of the classification consists in determining the set of quadratic imaginary fields $M$ with class group $\mathrm{C}_2 \times \mathrm{C}_2$ for which there exists an abelian surface $A$ defined over $\mathbb{Q}$ which is geometrically isogenous to the square of an elliptic curve with CM by $M$. We first study the interplay between the field of definition of the geometric endomorphisms of $A$ and the field $M$. This reduces the problem to the situation in which $E$ is a $\mathbb{Q}$-curve in the sense of Gross. We can then conclude our analysis by employing Nakamura's method to compute the endomorphism algebra of the restriction of scalars of a Gross $\mathbb{Q}$-curve.

Endomorphism algebras of geometrically split genus 2 Jacobians over Q

The main result of [FG20] classifies the 92 geometric endomorphism algebras of geometrically split abelian surfaces defined over Q. We show that 54 of them arise as geometric endomorphism algebras of Jacobians of genus 2 curves defined over Q, and that the remaining 38 do not. In particular, we exhibit 38 examples of Qbar-isogeny classes of abelian surfaces defined over Q that do not contain any Jacobian of a genus 2 curve defined over Q, and for each of the 54 algebras that do arise we exhibit a curve realizing them.

On a local-global principle for quadratic twists of abelian varieties

Let $A$ and $A'$ be abelian varieties defined over a number field $k$ of dimension $g\geq 1$. For $g\leq 3$, we show that the following local-global principle holds: $A$ and $A'$ are quadratic twists of each other if and only if, for almost all primes $\mathfrak p$ of $k$ of good reduction for $A$ and $A'$, the reductions $A_{\mathfrak p}$ and $A'_{\mathfrak p}$ are quadratic twists of each other. This result is known when $g=1$, in which case it has appeared in works by Kings, Rajan, Ramakrishnan, and Serre. We provide an example that violates this local-global principle in dimension $g=4$.

Tate module tensor decompositions and the Sato-Tate conjecture for certain abelian varieties potentially of $\mathrm{GL}_2$-type

We introduce a tensor decomposition of the $\ell$-adic Tate module of an abelian variety $A_0$ defined over a number field which is geometrically isotypic. If $A_0$ is potentially of $\GL_2$-type and defined over a totally real number field, we use this decomposition to describe its Sato--Tate group and to prove the Sato--Tate conjecture in certain cases.

Computing L-Polynomials of Picard curves from Cartier-Manin matrices

We study the sequence of zeta functions $Z(C_p,T)$ of a generic Picard curve $C:y^3=f(x)$ defined over $\mathbb{Q}$ at primes $p$ of good reduction for $C$. We define a degree 9 polynomial $ψ_f\in \mathbb{Q}[x]$ such that the splitting field of $ψ_f(x^3/2)$ is the $2$-torsion field of the Jacobian of $C$. We prove that, for all but a density zero subset of primes, the zeta function $Z(C_p,T)$ is uniquely determined by the Cartier-Manin matrix $A_p$ of $C$ modulo $p$ and the splitting behavior modulo $p$ of $f$ and $ψ_f$; we also show that for primes $\equiv 1 \pmod{3}$ the matrix $A_p$ suffices and that for primes $\equiv 2 \pmod{3}$ the genericity assumption on $C$ is unnecessary. An element of the proof, which may be of independent interest, is the determination of the density of the set of primes of ordinary reduction for a generic Picard curve. By combining this with recent work of Sutherland, we obtain a practical deterministic algorithm that computes $Z(C_p,T)$ for almost all primes $p \le N$ using $N\log(N)^{3+o(1)}$ bit operations. This is the first practical result of this type for curves of genus greater than 2.

Sato-Tate groups of abelian threefolds: a preview of the classification

We announce the classification of Sato-Tate groups of abelian threefolds over number fields; there are 410 possible conjugacy classes of closed subgroups of USp(6) that occur. We summarize the key points of the "upper bound" aspect of the classification, and give a more rigorous treatment of the "lower bound" by realizing 33 groups that appear in the classification as maximal cases with respect to inclusions of finite index. Further details will be provided in a subsequent paper.

On the Hilbert eigenvariety at exotic and CM classical weight 1 points

Let $F$ be a totally real number field and let $f$ be a classical cuspidal $p$-regular Hilbert modular eigenform over $F$ of parallel weight $1$. Let $x$ be the point on the $p$-adic Hilbert eigenvariety $\mathcal E$ corresponding to an ordinary $p$-stabilization of $f$. We show that if the $p$-adic Schanuel Conjecture is true, then $\mathcal E$ is smooth at $x$ if $f$ has CM. If we additionally assume that $F/\mathbb Q$ is Galois, we show that the weight map is étale at $x$ if $f$ has either CM or exotic projective image (which is the case for almost all cuspidal Hilbert modular eigenforms of parallel weight $1$). We prove these results by showing that the completed local ring of the eigenvariety at $x$ is isomorphic to a universal nearly ordinary Galois deformation ring.

Fields of definition of elliptic $k$-curves and the realizability of all genus 2 Sato--Tate groups over a number field

Let $A/\mathbb{Q}$ be an abelian variety of dimension $g\geq 1$ that is isogenous over $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}$ to $E^g$, where $E$ is an elliptic curve. If $E$ does not have complex multiplication (CM), by results of Ribet and Elkies concerning fields of definition of elliptic $\mathbb{Q}$-curves $E$ is isogenous to a curve defined over a polyquadratic extension of $\mathbb{Q}$. We show that one can adapt Ribet's methods to study the field of definition of $E$ up to isogeny also in the CM case. We find two applications of this analysis to the theory of Sato--Tate groups: First, we show that $18$ of the $34$ possible Sato--Tate groups of abelian surfaces over $\mathbb{Q}$ occur among at most $51$ $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}$-isogeny classes of abelian surfaces over $\mathbb{Q}$; Second, we give a positive answer to a question of Serre concerning the existence of a number field over which abelian surfaces can be found realizing each of the $52$ possible Sato--Tate groups of abelian surfaces.

Arithmetic invariants from Sato--Tate moments

We give some arithmetic-geometric interpretations of the moments M_2[a_1], M_1[a_2], and M_1[s_2] of the Sato-Tate group of an abelian variety A defined over a number field by relating them to the ranks of the endomorphism ring and Néron-Severi group of A.

Sato-Tate distributions of twists of the Fermat and the Klein quartics

We determine the limiting distribution of the normalized Euler factors of an abelian threefold A defined over a number field k when A is geometrically isogenous to the cube of a CM elliptic curve defined over k. As an application, we classify the Sato-Tate distributions of the Jacobians of twists of the Fermat and Klein quartics, obtaining 54 and 23, respectively, and 60 in total. We encounter a new phenomenon not visible in dimensions 1 or 2: the limiting distribution of the normalized Euler factors is not determined by the limiting distributions of their coefficients.
