Quadratic subproduct systems, free products, and their C*-algebras

Motivated by the interplay between quadratic algebras, noncommutative geometry, and operator theory, we introduce the notion of quadratic subproduct systems of Hilbert spaces. Specifically, we study the subproduct systems induced by a finite number of complex quadratic polynomials in noncommuting variables, and describe their Toeplitz and Cuntz--Pimsner algebras. Inspired by the theory of graded associative algebras, we define a free product operation in the category of subproduct systems and show that this corresponds to the reduced free product of the Toeplitz algebras. Finally, we obtain results about the K-theory of the Toeplitz and Cuntz--Pimsner algebras of a large class of quadratic subproduct systems.

KK-duality for the Cuntz-Pimsner algebras of Temperley-Lieb subproduct systems

We prove that the Cuntz-Pimsner algebra of every Temperley-Lieb subproduct system is KK-self-dual. We show also that every such Cuntz-Pimsner algebra has a canonical KMS-state, which we use to construct a Fredholm module representative for the fundamental class of the duality. This allows us to describe the K-homology of the Cuntz-Pimsner algebras by explicit Fredholm modules. Both the construction of the dual class and the proof of duality rely in a crucial way on quantum symmetries of Temperley-Lieb subproduct systems. In the simplest case of Arveson's $2$-shift our work establishes $U(2)$-equivariant KK-self-duality of $S^3$.

Split extensions and KK-equivalences for quantum projective spaces

We study the noncommutative topology of the $C^*$-algebras $C(\mathbb{C}P_q^{n})$ of the quantum projective spaces within the framework of Kasparov's bivariant K-theory. In particular, we construct an explicit KK-equivalence with the commutative algebra $\mathbb{C}^{n+1}$. Our construction relies on showing that the extension of $C^*$-algebras relating two quantum projective spaces of successive dimensions admits a splitting, which we can describe explicitly using graph algebra techniques.

Decomposable Blaschke products of degree $2^n$

We study the decomposability of a finite Blaschke product $B$ of degree $2^n$ into $n$ degree-$2$ Blaschke products, examining the connections between Blaschke products, the elliptical range theorem, Poncelet theorem, and the monodromy group. We show that if the numerical range of the compression of the shift operator, $W(S_B)$, with $B$ a Blaschke product of degree $n$, is an ellipse then $B$ can be written as a composition of lower-degree Blaschke products that correspond to a factorization of the integer $n$. We also show that a Blaschke product of degree $2^n$ with an elliptical Blaschke curve has at most $n$ distinct critical values, and we use this to examine the monodromy group associated with a regularized Blaschke product $B$. We prove that if $B$ can be decomposed into $n$ degree-$2$ Blaschke products, then the monodromy group associated with $B$ is the wreath product of $n$ cyclic groups of order $2$. Lastly, we study the group of invariants of a Blaschke product $B$ of order $2^n$ when $B$ is a composition of $n$ Blaschke products of order $2$.

Gysin sequences and SU(2)-symmetries of C*-algebras

Motivated by the study of symmetries of C*-algebras, as well as by multivariate operator theory, we introduce the notion of an SU(2)-equivariant subproduct system of Hilbert spaces. We analyse the resulting Toeplitz and Cuntz-Pimsner algebras and provide results about their topological invariants through Kasparov's bivariant K-theory. In particular, starting from an irreducible representation of SU(2), we show that the corresponding Toeplitz algebra is equivariantly KK-equivalent to the algebra of complex numbers. In this way, we obtain a six term exact sequence of K-groups containing a noncommutative analogue of the Euler class.

Toeplitz extensions in noncommutative topology and mathematical physics

We review the theory of Toeplitz extensions and their role in operator K-theory, including Kasparov's bivariant K-theory. We then discuss the recent applications of Toeplitz algebras in the study of solid state systems, focusing in particular on the bulk-edge correspondence for topological insulators.

Pure infiniteness and paradoxicality for graph $C^*$-algebras

We obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for pure infiniteness of the path groupoid $C^*$-algebra of a row-finite graph without sinks. In particular we show that for such a path groupoid $\mathcal{G}_E$, the properties of being essential principal and the existence of a basis of $(\mathcal{G}_E^a, 2, 1)$-paradoxical sets for the topology are not only sufficient, but also necessary.

Associated noncommutative vector bundles over the Vaksman-Soibelman quantum complex projective spaces

By a diagonal embedding of $U(1)$ in $SU_q(m)$, we prolongate the diagonal circle action on the Vaksman-Soibelman quantum sphere $S^{2n+1}_q$ to the $SU_q(m)$-action on the prolongated bundle. Then we prove that the noncommutative vector bundles associated via the fundamental representation of $SU_q(m)$, for $m\in\{2,\ldots,n\}$, yield generators of the even K-theory group of the C*-algebra of the Vaksman-Soibelman quantum complex projective space $\mathbb{C}{\rm P}^n_q$.

An equivariant pullback structure of trimmable graph C*-algebras

We prove that the graph C*-algebra $C^*(E)$ of a trimmable graph $E$ is $U(1)$-equivariantly isomorphic to a pullback C*-algebra of a subgraph C*-algebra $C^*(E'')$ and the C*-algebra of functions on a circle tensored with another subgraph C*-algebra $C^*(E')$. This allows us to unravel the structure and K-theory of the fixed-point subalgebra $C^*(E)^{U(1)}$ through the (typically simpler) C*-algebras $C^*(E')$, $C^*(E'')$ and $C^*(E'')^{U(1)}$. As examples of trimmable graphs, we consider one-loop extensions of the standard graphs encoding respectively the Cuntz algebra $\mathcal{O}_2$ and the Toeplitz algebra $\mathcal{T}$. Then we analyze equivariant pullback structures of trimmable graphs yielding the C*-algebras of the Vaksman-Soibelman quantum sphere $S^{2n+1}_q$ and the quantum lens space $L_q^3(l; 1,l)$, respectively.

Reflection positivity in higher derivative scalar theories

Reflection positivity constitutes an integral prerequisite in the Osterwalder-Schrader reconstruction theorem which relates quantum field theories defined on Euclidean space to their Lorentzian signature counterparts. In this work we rigorously prove the violation of reflection positivity in a large class of free scalar fields with a rational propagator. This covers in particular higher-derivative theories where the propagator admits a partial fraction decomposition as well as degenerate cases including e.g. p^4 -type propagators.

Quantum lattice gauge fields and groupoid C*-algebras

We present an operator-algebraic approach to the quantization and reduction of lattice field theories. Our approach uses groupoid C*-algebras to describe the observables and exploits Rieffel induction to implement the quantum gauge symmetries. We introduce direct systems of Hilbert spaces and direct systems of (observable) C*-algebras, and, dually, corresponding inverse systems of configuration spaces and (pair) groupoids. The continuum and thermodynamic limit of the theory can then be described by taking the corresponding limits, thereby keeping the duality between the Hilbert space and observable C*-algebra on the one hand, and the configuration space and the pair groupoid on the other. Since all constructions are equivariant with respect to the gauge group, the reduction procedure applies in the limit as well.

Gysin exact sequences for quantum weighted lens spaces

We describe quantum weighted lens spaces as total spaces of quantum principal circle bundles, using a Cuntz-Pimsner model. The corresponding Pimsner exact sequence is interpreted as a noncommutative analogue of the Gysin exact sequence. We use the sequence to compute the K-theory and K-homology groups of quantum weighted lens spaces, extending previous results and computations due to the author and collaborators.

Pimsner algebras and circle bundles

We report on the connections between noncommutative principal circle bundles, Pimsner algebras and strongly graded algebras. We illustrate several results with the examples of quantum weighted projective and lens spaces and theta-deformations.

The Cuntz-Pimsner extension and mapping cone exact sequences

For Cuntz-Pimsner algebras of bi-Hilbertian bimodules of finite Jones-Watatani index satisfying some side conditions, we give an explicit isomorphism between the $K$-theory exact sequences of the mapping cone of the inclusion of the coefficient algebra into a Cuntz-Pimsner algebra, and the Cuntz-Pimsner exact sequence. In the process we extend some results by the second author and collaborators from finite projective bimodules to finite index bimodules, and also clarify some aspects of Pimsner's `extension of scalars' construction.

Pimsner algebras and Gysin sequences from principal circle actions

A self Morita equivalence over an algebra B, given by a B-bimodule E, is thought of as a line bundle over B. The corresponding Pimsner algebra O_E is then the total space algebra of a noncommutative principal circle bundle over B. A natural Gysin-like sequence relates the KK-theories of O_E and of B. Interesting examples come from O_E a quantum lens space over B a quantum weighted projective line (with arbitrary weights). The KK-theory of these spaces is explicitly computed and natural generators are exhibited.

The Gysin Sequence for Quantum Lens Spaces

We define quantum lens spaces as `direct sums of line bundles' and exhibit them as `total spaces' of certain principal bundles over quantum projective spaces. For each of these quantum lens spaces we construct an analogue of the classical Gysin sequence in K-theory. We use the sequence to compute the K-theory of the quantum lens spaces, in particular to give explicit geometric representatives of their K-theory classes. These representatives are interpreted as `line bundles' over quantum lens spaces and generically define `torsion classes'. We work out explicit examples of these classes.
