QCD phase structure at finite isospin chemical potential and smaller-than-physical quark mass

Introduction of a nonzero isospin chemical potential in QCD leads to the emergence of a pion condensed phase at sufficiently large $\mu_I$, bounded by a second order transition line. At zero temperature the pion condensate appears at $\mu_I = m_\pi / 2$. Recent numerical studies at physical quark masses show that the pion condensation boundary remains vertical up to the meeting point with the chiral crossover line. If this result remains valid when the light quark mass (and the pion mass) goes to zero, then in the chiral limit at temperatures below the chiral transition pion condensation happens at arbitrary nonzero $\mu_I$. We report on results of a lattice QCD simulation of a 2+1 flavour QCD at nonzero isospin chemical potential, at smaller-than-physical light quark mass, that support this scenario.

Pion condensation at non-zero isospin chemical potential with Wilson fermions

In contrast to the case of non-zero baryon chemical potential, the isospin chemical potential does not introduce a sign problem and can be simulated on the lattice. When the isospin chemical potential is large enough, a phase transition to a Bose-Einstein condensate of pions takes place. Currently available results in the literature on the phase diagram and the equation of state in this setup employ staggered fermions. We present preliminary results on the onset of the pion condensation phase in simulations with Wilson fermions.

Condensation of lighter-than-physical pions in QCD

We report on the results of the 2+1 flavour QCD simulations at nonzero isospin chemical potential performed at half the physical light quark mass. At low temperatures and large isospin chemical potential Bose-Einstein Condensation (BEC) occurs, creating a pion condensed phase, separated from the hadronic and quark-gluon plasma phases by the BEC transition line. For physical quark masses, the section of this line between the hadronic and BEC phases was found to be almost perfectly vertical, i.e. aligned with the temperature axis. We show that for lighter than physical pions, this section remains vertical, and approaches the axis of vanishing chemical potential linearly with the pion mass, giving a prediction of the phase diagram in the chiral limit.

Progress in generating gauge ensembles with Stabilized Wilson Fermions

The continued generation of $N_f=2+1$ quark flavor gauge configurations using stabilized Wilson fermions by the open lattice initiative (OpenLat) is reported. We present the status of our ongoing production and show updates on increasing statistics at the four lattice spacings $a=0.12, 0.094, 0.077$ and $0.064$ fm. Aside from the $SU(3)$ flavor symmetric point we discuss advancements in going towards physical pion masses. We show preliminary results of the pion decay constants, extending previous results, and discuss further validation observables on the available ensembles.

Equation of state and speed of sound of isospin-asymmetric QCD on the lattice

We determine the QCD equation of state at nonzero temperature in the presence of an isospin asymmetry between the light quark chemical potentials on the lattice. Our simulations employ $N_f=2+1$ flavors of dynamical staggered quarks at physical masses, using three different lattice spacings. The main results are based on a two-dimensional spline interpolation of the isospin density, from which all relevant quantities can be obtained analytically. In particular, we present results for the pressure, the interaction measure, the energy and entropy densities, as well as the speed of sound. Remarkably, the latter is found to exceed its ideal gas limit deep in the pion condensed phase, the first account of the violation of this limit in first principles QCD. Finally, we also compute the phase diagram in the temperature -- isospin density plane for the first time. The data for all observables will be useful for the benchmarking of effective theories and low-energy models of QCD and are provided in ancillary files for simple reuse.

Phase Transitions in Particle Physics -- Results and Perspectives from Lattice Quantum Chromo-Dynamics

Phase transitions in a non-perturbative regime can be studied by ab initio Lattice Field Theory methods. The status and future research directions for LFT investigations of Quantum Chromo-Dynamics under extreme conditions are reviewed, including properties of hadrons and of the hypothesized QCD axion as inferred from QCD topology in different phases. We discuss phase transitions in strong interactions in an extended parameter space, and the possibility of model building for Dark Matter and Electro-Weak Symmetry Breaking. Methodological challenges are addressed as well, including new developments in Artificial Intelligence geared towards the identification of different phases and transitions.

Gauge generation and dissemination in OpenLat

In this contribution we report the status and plans of the open lattice initiative to generate and share new gauge ensembles using the stabilised Wilson fermion framework. The production strategy is presented in terms of a three stage plan alongside summaries of the data management as well as access policies. Current progress in completing the first stage of generating ensembles at four lattice spacings at the flavor symmetric point is given.

Benchmark Continuum Limit Results for Spectroscopy with Stabilized Wilson Fermions

The OpenLat initiative presents its results of lattice QCD simulations using Stabilized Wilson Fermions (SWF) using 2+1 quark flavors. Focusing on the $\mathrm{SU}(3)$ flavor symmetric point $m_π=m_K=412$ MeV, four different lattice spacings ($a=0.064,0.077,0.094,0.12$ fm) are used to perform the continuum limit to study cutoff effects. We present results on light hadron masses; for the determination we use a Bayesian analysis framework with constraints and model averaging to minimize the bias in the analysis.

Pion condensation at lower than physical quark masses

In QCD at large enough isospin chemical potential Bose-Einstein Condensation (BEC) takes place, separated from the normal phase by a phase transition. From previous studies the location of the BEC line at the physical point is known. In the chiral limit the condensation happens already at infinitesimally small isospin chemical potential for zero temperature according to chiral perturbation theory. The thermal chiral transition at zero density might then be affected, depending on the shape of the BEC boundary, by its proximity. As a first step towards the chiral limit, we perform simulations of 2+1 flavors QCD at half the physical quark masses. The position of the BEC transition is then extracted and compared with the results at physical masses.

QCD thermodynamics with stabilized Wilson fermions

Stabilized Wilson fermions are a reformulation of Wilson clover fermions that incorporates several numerical stabilizing techniques, but also a local change of the fermion action - the original clover term being replaced with an exponentiated version of it. We intend to apply the stabilized Wilson fermions toolbox to the thermodynamics of QCD, starting on the $N_f=3$ symmetric line on the Columbia plot, and to compare the results with those obtained with other fermion discretizations.

QCD topology with electromagnetic fields and the axion-photon coupling

The introduction of non-orthogonal electric and magnetic fields in the QCD vacuum enhances the weight of topological sectors with a nonzero topological charge. For weak fields, there is a linear response for the expectation value of the topological charge. We study this linear response and relate it to the QCD correction to the axion-photon coupling. We also analyse the magnetic field dependence of the topological susceptibility for a range of temperatures around $T_c$. In this work we use lattice simulations with improved staggered quarks at physical masses, including background magnetic and (imaginary) electric fields.

Anomalous transport phenomena on the lattice

The interrelation between quantum anomalies and electromagnetic fields leads to a series of non-dissipative transport effects in QCD. In this work we study anomalous transport phenomena with lattice QCD simulations using improved staggered quarks in the presence of a background magnetic field. In particular, we calculate the conductivities both in the free case and in the interacting case, analysing the dependence of these coefficients with several parameters, such as the temperature and the quark mass.

Equation of state and Taylor expansions at nonzero isospin chemical potential

We compute the equation of state of isospin asymmetric QCD at zero and non-zero temperatures using direct simulations of lattice QCD with three dynamical flavors at physical quark masses. In addition to the pressure and the trace anomaly and their behavior towards the continuum limit, we will particularly discuss the extraction of the speed of sound. Furthermore, we discuss first steps towards the extension of the EoS to small non-zero baryon chemical potentials via Taylor expansion.

The light Roberge-Weiss tricritical endpoint at imaginary isospin chemical potential

We discuss results for the Roberge Weiss (RW) phase transition at nonzero imaginary baryon and isospin chemical potentials, in the plane of temperature and quark masses. Our study focuses on the light tricritical endpoint which has already been used as a starting point for extrapolations aiming at the chiral limit at vanishing chemical potentials. In particular, we are interested in determining how imaginary isospin chemical potential shifts the tricritical mass with respect to earlier studies at zero imaginary isospin chemical potential. A positive shift might allow one to perform the chiral extrapolations from larger quark mass values, therefore making them less computationally expensive. We also present results for the dynamics of Polyakov loop clusters across the RW phase transition.

The light Roberge-Weiss tricritical endpoint at imaginary isospin and baryon chemical potential

Imaginary chemical potentials serve as a useful tool to constrain the QCD phase diagram and to gain insight into the thermodynamics of strongly interacting matter. In this study, we report on the first determination of the phase diagram for arbitrary imaginary baryon and isospin chemical potentials at high temperature using one-loop perturbation theory, revealing a nontrivial structure of Roberge-Weiss (RW) phase transitions in this plane. Subsequently, this system is simulated numerically with $N_{\rm f}=2$ unimproved staggered quarks on $N_τ=4$ lattices at a range of temperatures at one of the RW phase transitions. We establish a lower bound for the light quark mass, where the first-order transition line terminates in a tricritical point. It is found that this tricritical mass is increased as compared to the case of purely baryonic imaginary chemical potentials, indicating that our setup is more advantageous for identifying critical behavior towards the chiral limit. Finally, the dynamics of local Polyakov loop clusters is also studied in conjuction with the RW phase transition.

QCD thermodynamics at non-zero isospin asymmetry

We study the thermodynamic properties of QCD at nonzero isospin chemical potential using improved staggered quarks at physical quark masses. In particular, we discuss the determination of the equation of state at zero and nonzero temperatures and show results. Using the results for the isospin density $n_I$, we also determine the phase diagram in the $(n_I,T)$-plane.

Properties, ensembles and hadron spectra with Stabilised Wilson Fermions

In this joint contribution we announce the formation of the "OPEN LATtice initiative", https://openlat1.gitlab.io, to study Stabilised Wilson Fermions (SWF). They are a new avenue for QCD calculations with Wilson-type fermions and we report results on our continued study of this framework: Tuning the clover improvement coefficient, and extending the reach of lattice spacings to $a=0.12$ fm. We fix the flavor symmetric points $m_π=m_K=412$ MeV at $a=0.055,0.064, 0.077, 0.094, 0.12$ fm and define the trajectories to the physical point by fixing the trace of the quark mass matrix. Currently our pion mass range extends down to $m_π\sim200$ MeV. We outline our tuning goals and strategy as well as our future planned ensembles. First scaling studies are performed on $f_π$ and $m_π$. Additionally results of a preliminary continuum extrapolation of $m_N$ at the flavor symmetric point are presented. Going further a first determination of the light and strange hadron spectrum chiral dependence is shown, which serves to check the quality of the action for precision measurements. We also investigate other quantities such as flowed gauge observables to study how the continuum limit is approached. Taken together we observe the SWF enable us to perform stable lattice simulations across a large range of parameters in mass, volume and lattice spacing. Pooling resources our new initiative has made our reported progress possible and through it we will share generated gauge ensembles under an open science philosophy.

The QCD chiral phase transition for different numbers of quark flavours

We present results from a comprehensive study of the location of the chiral critical surface, which separates regions of first-order chiral transitions from analytic crossovers, in the bare parameter space of lattice QCD with unimproved staggered fermions. We study the theories with $N_f\in[2,8]$ and trace the chiral critical surface along diminishing lattice spacing, with $N_τ=\{4,6,8\}$. This allows for an extrapolation to the lattice chiral limit, where the surface has to terminate in a tricritical line, employing known tricritical scaling relations. Knowing the phase structure in the lattice bare parameter space allows to draw conclusions for the approach to the continuum and chiral limits taken in the appropriate order. Our data provide evidence for the continuum chiral limit to feature a second-order transition for all $N_f\in[2,7]$. We perform an analogous scaling analysis with already published data from $N_f=3$ $O(a)$-improved Wilson fermions, which is also consistent with a second-order transition in the continuum. A modified Columbia plot reflecting those results is suggested.
