Spectral evolution of two-photon emission in microresonators

High-Q silicon nitride microresonators are versatile sources for generating photon pairs via four-wave mixing. We investigate the spectral coherence of this process, tracking the transition from the spontaneous quantum regime to the onset of optical parametric oscillation. By combining time-correlation measurements with phase-sensitive measurements, we continuously monitor the emission linewidth as it evolves from a cavity-lifetime-limited linewidth toward the pump-linewidth scale. This characterization is essential for optimizing integrated sources for scalable quantum networks.

Collimation of dense atomic beams by Swept Velocity Shelving

Engineering continuous, high-flux, and collimated atomic beams is a useful resource for metrology and material deposition. Developments in this area have been essential for the evolution of cold-atom based quantum experiments, yet the ubiquitous balanced-force methods such as transverse molasses cooling degrade at high atomic flux due to absorption-induced force imbalance. We introduce a collimation scheme that combines the use of a broadband transition for velocity shifting with a narrowband transition for velocity selection, enabling velocity-selective beam collimation without relying on balanced-power counter-propagating beams. Collimated atoms are shelved in a long-lived internal state, reducing the total light scattering and providing a state-heralded collimated beam. Simulations using strontium as a model system show a highly effective collimation process that does not suffer from absorption-induced force-imbalance and experimental results agree well with these predictions.

Continuous cavity-QED with an atomic beam

Atoms coupled to cavities provide an exciting playground for the study of fundamental interactions of atoms mediated through a common channel. Many of the applications of cavity-QED and cold-atom experiments more broadly, suffer from limitations caused by the transient nature of an atomic loading cycle. The development of continuous operation schemes is necessary to push these systems to the next level of performance. Here we present a machine designed to produce a continuous flux of collimated atoms that traverse an optical cavity. The atom-light interaction is enhanced by a fast-decaying cavity optimal for studying phenomena where atomic properties dominate. We demonstrate the transition to a collective strong coupling regime heralded by a normal-mode splitting. We observe a second phase with a binary normal-mode splitting born from an offset in the mean velocity of the atoms. Inverting the atomic ensemble in the collective strong coupling regime, we measure continuous optical gain. This work sets the stage for studying threshold conditions for continuous collective phenomena, such as continuous superradiant lasing.

Observation of a dipolar quantum gas with metastable supersolid properties

The competition of dipole-dipole and contact interactions leads to exciting new physics in dipolar gases, well-illustrated by the recent observation of quantum droplets and rotons in dipolar condensates. We show that the combination of the roton instability and quantum stabilization leads under proper conditions to a novel regime that presents supersolid properties, due to the coexistence of stripe modulation and phase coherence. In a combined experimental and theoretical analysis, we determine the parameter regime for the formation of coherent stripes, whose lifetime of a few tens of milliseconds is limited by the eventual destruction of the stripe pattern due to three-body losses. Our results open intriguing prospects for the development of long-lived dipolar supersolids.
