From artificial to circular intelligence to support the well-being of our habitat

The proliferation of machine learning and artificial intelligence redefines the interaction between the anthropogenic and natural elements of our habitat.The use of monitoring tools, processing facilities and the internet of things supports the assessment of planetary health at any given time through automation. However, these data, natural resources and infrastructure intensive technologies are not neutral on the Earth. As the community of AI practitioners works on the creation of tools with minimal socio-environmental impacts, we contribute to the these efforts by proposing a novel conceptual and procedural framework which we call Circular Intelligence or CIntel. CIntel leverages a bottom-up and community-driven approach to learn from the ability of nature to regenerate and adapt. CIntel incorporates ethical principles in its technical design to preserve the stability of the habitat, while also increasing the well-being of its inhabitants by design.

Efficiency Will Not Lead to Sustainable Reasoning AI

AI research is increasingly moving toward complex problem solving, where models are optimized not only for pattern recognition but for multi-step reasoning. Historically, computing's global energy footprint has been stabilized by sustained efficiency gains and natural saturation thresholds in demand. But as efficiency improvements are approaching physical limits, emerging reasoning AI lacks comparable saturation points: performance is no longer limited by the amount of available training data but continues to scale with exponential compute investments in both training and inference. This paper argues that efficiency alone will not lead to sustainable reasoning AI and discusses research and policy directions to embed explicit limits into the optimization and governance of such systems.

Critical misalignments in climate pledges reveal imbalanced sustainable development pathways

We explore the integration of climate action and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in nationally determined contributions (NDCs), revealing persistent synergies and trade-offs across income groups. While high-income countries emphasize systemic challenges like health (SDG3) and inequality (SDG10), low-income nations prioritize the water-energy-food nexus (SDGs 6-7-12) and natural resource management (SDG15) due to vulnerabilities to climate impacts. Harnessing an innovative artificial intelligence routine, we discuss what these diverging development trajectories imply for the Paris Agreement and the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development in terms of global inequality, the climate and sustainable finance flows and multilateral governance.

Large language models in climate and sustainability policy: limits and opportunities

As multiple crises threaten the sustainability of our societies and pose at risk the planetary boundaries, complex challenges require timely, updated, and usable information. Natural-language processing (NLP) tools enhance and expand data collection and processing and knowledge utilization capabilities to support the definition of an inclusive, sustainable future. In this work, we apply different NLP techniques, tools and approaches to climate and sustainability documents to derive policy-relevant and actionable measures. We focus on general and domain-specific large language models (LLMs) using a combination of static and prompt-based methods. We find that the use of LLMs is successful at processing, classifying and summarizing heterogeneous text-based data. However, we also encounter challenges related to human intervention across different workflow stages and knowledge utilization for policy processes. Our work presents a critical but empirically grounded application of LLMs to complex policy problems and suggests avenues to further expand Artificial Intelligence-powered computational social sciences.

Closing the gap between research and projects in climate change innovation in Europe

Innovation is a key component to equip our society with tools to adapt to new climatic conditions. The development of research-action interfaces shifts useful ideas into operationalized knowledge allowing innovation to flourish. In this paper we quantify the existing gap between climate research and innovation action in Europe using a novel framework that combines artificial intelligence (AI) methods and network science. We compute the distance between key topics of research interest from peer review publications and core issues tackled by innovation projects funded by the most recent European framework programmes. Our findings reveal significant differences exist between and within the two layers. Economic incentives, agricultural and industrial processes are differently connected to adaptation and mitigation priorities. We also find a loose research-action connection in bioproducts, biotechnologies and risk assessment practices, where applications are still too few compared to the research insights. Our analysis supports policy-makers to measure and track how research funding result in innovation action, and to adjust decisions if stated priorities are not achieved.

Growing polarisation around climate change on social media

Climate change and political polarisation are two of the 21st century's critical socio-political issues. Here, we investigate their intersection by studying the discussion around the UN Conference of The Parties on Climate Change (COP) using Twitter data from 2014 to 2021. First, we reveal a large increase in ideological polarisation during COP26, following low polarisation between COP20 and COP25. Second, we show that this increase is driven by growing right-wing activity, a 4-fold increase since COP21 relative to pro-climate groups. Finally, we identify a broad range of ''climate contrarian'' views during COP26, emphasising the theme of ''political hypocrisy'' as a topic of cross-ideological appeal; contrarian views and accusations of hypocrisy have become key themes in the Twitter climate discussion since 2019. With future climate action reliant on negotiations at COP27 and beyond, our results highlight the importance of monitoring polarisation, and its impacts, in the public climate discourse.
