Signature Methods for Optimal Market Making

We propose a signature-based method to solve the optimal market-making problem under a mean-variance criterion. By exploiting signature linearization techniques, we reduce the market-making problem to a pseudo-linear optimization over the expected signature of an augmented market path, and we develop a signature algorithm named Sig-REINFORCE to learn the optimal bid and ask quotes. We test our method in two scenarios, in which market-order arrivals follow either a Poisson or a self-exciting Hawkes process, and we benchmark it against a Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO) baseline.

Functional It\^o-formula and Taylor expansions for non-anticipative maps of c\`adl\`ag rough paths

We derive a functional It\^o-formula for non-anticipative maps of rough paths, based on the approximation properties of the signature of c\`adl\`ag rough paths. This result is a functional extension of the It\^o-formula for c\`adl\`ag rough paths (by Friz and Zhang (2018)), which coincides with the change of variable formula formulated by Dupire (2009) whenever the functionals' representations, the notions of regularity, and the integration concepts can be matched. Unlike these previous works, we treat the vertical (jump) pertubation via the Marcus transformation, which allows for incorporating path functionals where the second order vertical derivatives do not commute, as is the case for typical signature functionals. As a byproduct, we show that sufficiently regular non-anticipative maps admit a functional Taylor expansion in terms of the path's signature, leading to an important generalization of the recent results by Dupire and Tissot-Daguette (2022).

Holomorphic jump-diffusions

We introduce a class of jump-diffusions, called holomorphic, of which the well-known classes of affine and polynomial processes are particular instances. The defining property concerns the extended generator, which is required to map a (subset of) holomorphic functions to themselves. This leads to a representation of the expectation of power series of the process' marginals via a potentially infinite dimensional linear ODE. We apply the same procedure by considering exponentials of holomorphic functions, leading to a class of processes named affine-holomorphic for which a representation for quantities as the characteristic function of power series is provided. Relying on powerful results from complex analysis, we obtain sufficient conditions on the process' characteristics which guarantee the holomorphic and affine-holomorphic properties and provide applications to several classes of jump-diffusions.

Universal approximation theorems for continuous functions of c\`adl\`ag paths and L\'evy-type signature models

We prove a universal approximation theorem that allows to approximate continuous functionals of c\`adl\`ag (rough) paths uniformly in time and on compact sets of paths via linear functionals of their time-extended signature. Our main motivation to treat this question comes from signature-based models for finance that allow for the inclusion of jumps. Indeed, as an important application, we define a new class of universal signature models based on an augmented L\'evy process, which we call L\'evy-type signature models. They extend continuous signature models for asset prices as proposed e.g. by Arribas et al.(2020) in several directions, while still preserving universality and tractability properties. To analyze this, we first show that the signature process of a generic multivariate L\'evy process is a polynomial process on the extended tensor algebra and then use this for pricing and hedging approaches within L\'evy-type signature models.
