The mean free path of protons and neutrons in isospin-asymmetric nuclear matter

We calculate the mean free path of protons and neutrons in symmetric and asymmetric nuclear matter, based on microscopic in-medium nucleon-nucleon cross sections. Those are obtained from calculations of the G-matrix including relativistic "Dirac" effects. The dependence of the mean free path on energy and isospin asymmetry is discussed. We conclude by suggesting possible ways our microscopic predictions may be helpful in conjunction with studies of rare isotopes.

Predicting the Lambda binding energy in nuclear matter

The purpose of this note is to report predictions of the binding energy of the $Λ$ hyperon in nuclear matter using the latest version of the Juelich nucleon-nucleon meson-exchange potential. Results from a conventional Brueckner calculation are compared with previously reported values. A calculation including Dirac effects on the $Λ$ single-particle potential is also presented. Issues encountered in Dirac calculations with nucleon-hyperon potentials are discussed.

Effective Interactions In Neutron-Rich Matter

Properties of effective interactions in neutron-rich matter are reflected in the medium's equation of state (EOS), which is a relationship among several state variables. Spin and isospin asymmetries play an important role in the energy balance and could alter the stability conditions of the nuclear EOS. The EOS has far-reaching consequences for numerous nuclear processes in both the terrestrial laboratories and the cosmos. Presently the EOS, especially for neutron-rich matter, is still very uncertain. Heavy-ion reactions provide a unique means to constrain the EOS, particularly the density dependence of the nuclear symmetry energy. On the other hand, microscopic, self-consistent, and parameter-free approaches are ultimately needed for understanding nuclear properties in terms of the fundamental interactions among the basic constituents of nuclear systems. In this talk, after a brief review of our recent studies on spin-polarized neutron matter, we discuss constraining the changing rate of the gravitational constant $G$ and properties of (rapidly) rotating neutron stars by using a nuclear EOS partially constrained by the latest terrestrial nuclear laboratory data.

Neutron star properties and the equation of state of neutron-rich matter

We calculate total masses and radii of neutron stars (NS) for pure neutron matter and nuclear matter in beta-equilibrium. We apply a relativistic nuclear matter equation of state (EOS) derived from Dirac-Brueckner-Hartree-Fock (DBHF) calculations. We use realistic nucleon-nucleon (NN) interactions defined in the framework of the meson exchange potential models. Our results are compared with other theoretical predictions and recent observational data. Suggestions for further study are discussed.
