Lambda polarization in heavy ion collisions: from RHIC BES to LHC energies

STAR collaboration at RHIC has recently measured the polarization of $Λ$ hyperons in non-central heavy ion collisions in the RHIC Beam Energy Scan (BES) program. The magnitude of the polarization was found to decrease from few percents at the lowest BES energies to $\approx0.2$% at the top RHIC energy. The polarization signal has been reproduced in different hydrodynamic calculations assuming a thermodynamic spin-vorticity coupling mechanism at the Cooper-Frye hypersurface. In this work an extension of our existing calculations of the $Λ$ polarization in the RHIC BES program to the top RHIC and 2.76 TeV LHC energies is presented. The longitudinal component of the $Λ$ polarization, which is the dominant component of the polarization at the LHC energies, is discussed. Finally we show that the global polarization of $Λ$ originates dominantly from the relativistic analogue of the classical vorticity, whereas the quadrupole longitudinal component originates from the gradients of temperature and acceleration of the medium when the $Λ$s are produced out of the fluid.

The QCD Phase Diagram from Statistical Model Analysis

Ideally, the Statistical Hadronization Model (SHM) freeze-out curve should reveal the QCD parton-hadron phase transformation line in the ($T$,$μ_B$) plane. We discuss the effects of various final state interaction phenomena, like baryon-antibaryon annihilation, core-corona effects or QCD critical point formation, which shift or deform the SHM freezeout curve. In particular, we present a method to remove the annihilation effects by quantifying them with the microscopic hadron transport model UrQMD. We further discuss the new aspects of hadronization that could be associated with the relatively broad cross-over phase transformation as predicted by lattice-QCD theory at low $μ_B$. That opens up the possibility that various observables of hadronization, e.g. hadron formation or susceptibilities of higher order (related to grand canonical fluctuations of conserved hadronic charges) may freeze out at different characteristic temperatures. This puts into question the concept of a universal \textit{(pseudo-)critical} temperature, as does the very nature of a cross-over phase transformation.

Study of Lambda polarization at RHIC BES and LHC energies

In hydrodynamic approach to relativistic heavy ion collisions, hadrons with nonzero spin, produced out of the hydrodynamic medium, can acquire polarization via spin-vorticity thermodynamic coupling mechanism. The hydrodynamical quantity steering the polarization is the thermal vorticity, that is minus the antisymmetric part of the gradient of four-temperature field. Based on this mechanism there have been several calculations in hydrodynamic and non-hydrodynamic models for non-central heavy ion collisions in the RHIC Beam Energy Scan energy range, showing that the amount of polarization of produced $Λ$ hyperons ranges from few percents to few permille, and decreases with collision energy. We report on an extension of our existing calculation of global $Λ$ polarization in UrQMD+vHLLE model to full RHIC and LHC energies, and discuss the component of polarization along the beam direction, which is the dominant one at high energies.

Numerical magneto-hydrodynamics for relativistic nuclear collisions

We present an improved version of the ECHO-QGP numerical code, which self-consistently includes for the first time the effects of electromagnetic fields within the framework of relativistic magnetohydrodynamics (RMHD). We discuss results of its application in relativistic heavy-ion collisions in the limit of infinite electrical conductivity of the plasma. After reviewing the relevant covariant $3\!+\!1$ formalisms, we illustrate the implementation of the evolution equations in the code and show the results of several tests aimed at assessing the accuracy and robustness of the implementation. After providing some estimates of the magnetic fields arising in non-central high-energy nuclear collisions, we perform full RMHD simulations of the evolution of the Quark-Gluon Plasma in the presence of electromagnetic fields and discuss the results. In our ideal RMHD setup we find that the magnetic field developing in non-central collisions does not significantly modify the elliptic-flow of the final hadrons. However, since there are uncertainties in the description of the pre-equilibrium phase and also in the properties of the medium, a more extensive survey of the possible initial conditions as well as the inclusion of dissipative effects are indeed necessary to validate this preliminary result.

Heavy Ion Collision evolution modeling with ECHO-QGP

We present a numerical code modeling the evolution of the medium formed in relativistic heavy ion collisions, ECHO-QGP. The code solves relativistic hydrodynamics in $(3+1)-$D, with dissipative terms included within the framework of Israel-Stewart theory; it can work both in Minkowskian and in Bjorken coordinates. Initial conditions are provided through an implementation of the Glauber model (both Optical and Monte Carlo), while freezeout and particle generation are based on the Cooper-Frye prescription. The code is validated against several test problems and shows remarkable stability and accuracy with the combination of a conservative (shock-capturing) approach and the high-order methods employed. In particular it beautifully agrees with the semi-analytic solution known as Gubser flow, both in the ideal and in the viscous Israel-Stewart case, up to very large times and without any ad hoc tuning of the algorithm.

The Nobel Prize delay

The time lag between the publication of a Nobel discovery and the conferment of the prize has been rapidly increasing for all disciplines, especially for Physics. Does this mean that fundamental science is running out of groundbreaking discoveries?

Hadron Formation in Relativistic Nuclear Collisions and the QCD Phase Diagram

We analyze hadrochemical freeze-out in central Pb+Pb collisions at CERN SPS and LHC energies. We determine the effects of baryon and antibaryon annihilation and/or regeneration occurring during the final cascade expansion stage of the collisions by deriving "survival factors" for each hadronic species and all energies considered by employing the UrQMD hybrid model. These survival factors are shown to resemble the pattern of data deviation from the statistical equilibrium calculations with the statistical model. We apply them in the SM data analysis, obtaining new points in the $T-μ_B$ plane which follow closely the parton-hadron phase boundary predicted by lattice QCD.

Hadron Formation and the Phase Diagram of QCD Matter

We investigate hadronic species freeze-out systematics in A+A collisions at low SPS energies, corresponding to a baryochemical potential above 300 MeV, analyzing NA49 hadron production data in the framework of the statistical hadronization model, and in the UrQMD hadronic transport model. Observing no deviation from universal grand canonical hadro-chemical equilibrium freeze-out, we argue that the observed hadronic freeze-out points should universally signal the boundary line of the hadronic phase in the QCD matter phase diagram.

Hadronization and Hadronic Freeze-Out in Relativistic Nuclear Collisions

We analyze hadrochemical freeze-out in central Pb+Pb collisions at CERN SPS energies, employing the hybrid version of the Ultrarelativistic Quantum Molecular Dynamics model, which describes the transition from a hydrodynamic stage to hadrons by the Cooper-Frye mechanism, and matches to a final hadron-resonance cascade. We fit the results both before and after the cascade stage using the Statistical Model, to assess the effect of the cascade phase. We observe a strong effect on antibaryon yields except anti-Omega, resulting in a shift in T and mu_B of the freeze-out curve. We discuss indications of a similar effect in SPS and RHIC data, and propose a method to recover the bulk hadron freeze-out conditions.

Production of multiply heavy flavoured baryons from Quark Gluon Plasma in relativistic heavy ion collisions

It is argued that in heavy ion collisions at LHC there could be a sizeable production of baryons containing two or three heavy quarks from statistical coalescence. This production mechanism is peculiar of Quark Gluon Plasma and the predicted rates, in heavy ion collisions at LHC energy, exceed those from a purely hadronic scenario, particularly for Xi_bc and Omega_ccc. Thus, besides the interest in the discovery of these new states, enhanced ratios of these baryons over singly heavy flavoured hadrons, like B or D, in heavy ion collisions with respect to pp at the same energy, would be a clear indication of kinetic equilibration of heavy quarks in the Quark Gluon Plasma.

Study on chemical equilibrium in nucleus-nucleus collisions at relativistic energies

We present a detailed study of chemical freeze-out in nucleus-nucleus collisions at beam energies of 11.6, 30, 40, 80 and 158A GeV. By analyzing hadronic multiplicities within the statistical hadronization approach, we have studied the chemical equilibration of the system as a function of center of mass energy and of the parameters of the source. Additionally, we have tested and compared different versions of the statistical model, with special emphasis on possible explanations of the observed strangeness hadronic phase space under-saturation.
