Perturbative, Nonperturbative and Exact Aspects of Crystalline Phases in the Gross-Neveu Model

We study the crystalline phase of the $O(2N)$ Gross--Neveu model with a chemical potential for $a \leq N-2$ of the fermions. We analyze the problem in three independent ways: using perturbative QFT methods, a semiclassical large $N$ analysis, and integrability techniques (both at finite and large $N$). The resulting picture is consistent across all three approaches: at sufficiently large chemical potential $h$, an inhomogeneous phase emerges in which $a$-particle bound states condense and which, at large $N$, corresponds to a periodically oscillating chiral condensate. In this phase, the usual dynamically generated scale $\Lambda$ is replaced by two new dynamically generated scales $\Lambda_{\rm n}$ and $\Lambda_{\rm c}$. These two scales govern the multiple nonperturbative effects in the theory, corresponding in particular to the mass gaps of neutral and charged excitations on top of the inhomogeneous vacuum, respectively. They also control the nonperturbative corrections to observables such as the free energy and provide the parameters characterizing the oscillatory profile of the mean field at large $N$. In this paper, we provide the necessary details of each of the three methods, thereby complementing the results announced in a previous, shorter publication.

Higher-form entanglement asymmetry. Part I. The limits of symmetry breaking

Entanglement asymmetry is a relative entropy that faithfully diagnoses symmetry breaking in quantum states, possibly within a spatial subregion. In this work, we extend such framework to higher-form symmetries and compute entanglement asymmetry in theories with spontaneously-broken continuous zero- and higher-form symmetries. One of our central results is an entropic Coleman-Mermin-Wagner theorem, for 0- and $p$-form symmetries, valid also on subregions, which forbids spontaneous breaking of continuous $p$-form symmetries in spacetime dimensions $d\leq p+2$. Our theorem not only qualifies symmetry breaking, it also quantifies it: spontaneous breaking triggers a nonvanishing entanglement asymmetry that grows monotonically towards the infrared, and counts the number of Goldstone fields. Along the way, we derive standalone results concerning the entanglement entropy and asymmetry of Goldstone bosons and gauge fields. In particular, we find a closed-form expression for the R\'enyi asymmetries of a compact scalar field on spherical subregions in three and four spacetime dimensions, and for higher-form gauge fields in higher dimensions.

Entanglement asymmetry for higher and noninvertible symmetries

Entanglement asymmetry is an observable in quantum systems, constructed using quantum-information methods, suited to detecting symmetry breaking in states -- possibly out of equilibrium -- relative to a subsystem. In this paper we define the asymmetry for generalized finite symmetries, including higher-form and noninvertible ones. To this end, we introduce a "symmetrizer" of (reduced) density matrices with respect to the $C^*$-algebra of symmetry operators acting on the subsystem Hilbert space. We study in detail applications to (1+1)-dimensional quantum field theories: First, we analyze spontaneous symmetry breaking of noninvertible symmetries, confirming that distinct vacua can exhibit different physical properties. Second, we compute the asymmetry of certain excited states in conformal field theories (including the Ising CFT), when the subsystem is either the full circle or an interval therein. The relevant symmetry algebras to consider are the fusion, tube, and strip algebras. Finally, we comment on the case that the symmetry algebra is a (weak) Hopf algebra.

Condensates, crystals, and renormalons in the Gross-Neveu model at finite density

We study the $O(2N)$ symmetric Gross-Neveu model at finite density in the presence of a $U(1)$ chemical potential $h$ for a generic number $a \leq N-2$ of fermion fields. By combining perturbative quantum field theory, semiclassical large $N$, and Bethe ansatz techniques, we show that at finite $N$ two new dynamically generated scales $\Lambda_\mathrm{n}$ and $\Lambda_\mathrm{c}$ appear in the theory, governing the mass gap of neutral and charged fermions, respectively. Above a certain threshold value for $h$, $a$-fermion bound states condense and form an inhomogeneous configuration, which at infinite $N$ is a crystal spontaneously breaking translations. At large $h$, this crystal has mean $\Lambda_\mathrm{n}$ and spatial oscillations of amplitude $2\Lambda_\mathrm{c}$. The two scales also control the nonperturbative corrections to the free energy, resolving a puzzle concerning fractional-power renormalons and predicting new ones.

Holographic duals of symmetry broken phases

We explore a novel interpretation of Symmetry Topological Field Theories (SymTFTs) as theories of gravity, proposing a holographic duality where the bulk SymTFT (with the gauging of a suitable Lagrangian algebra) is dual to the universal effective field theory (EFT) that describes spontaneous symmetry breaking on the boundary. We test this conjecture in various dimensions and with many examples involving different continuous symmetry structures, including non-Abelian and non-invertible symmetries, as well as higher groups. For instance, we find that many Abelian SymTFTs are dual to free theories of Goldstone bosons or generalized Maxwell fields, while non-Abelian SymTFTs relate to non-linear sigma models with target spaces defined by the symmetry groups. We also extend our analysis to include the non-invertible $\mathbb{Q}/\mathbb{Z}$ axial symmetry, finding it to be dual to axion-Maxwell theory, and a non-Abelian 2-group structure in four dimensions, deriving a new parity-violating interaction that has implications for the low-energy dynamics of U(N) QCD.

Entanglement asymmetry in conformal field theory and holography

Entanglement asymmetry is a measure of symmetry breaking in quantum subsystems, inspired by quantum information theory, particularly suited to study out-of-equilibrium states. We study the entanglement asymmetry of a class of excited "coherent states" in conformal quantum field theories with a U(1) symmetry, employing Euclidean path-integral methods with topological symmetry defects and the replica formalism. We compute, at leading order in perturbation theory, the asymmetry for a variety of subsystems, including finite spherical subregions in flat space, in finite volume, and at positive temperature. We also study its Lorentzian time evolution, showcasing the dynamical restoration of the symmetry due to thermalization, as well as the presence of a quantum Mpemba effect. Our results are universal, and apply in any number of dimensions. We also show that the perturbative entanglement asymmetry is related to the Fisher information metric, which has a known holographic dual called Hollands-Wald canonical energy, and that it is captured by the AdS bulk charge contained in the entanglement wedge.

On the Symmetry TFT of Yang-Mills-Chern-Simons theory

Three-dimensional Yang-Mills-Chern-Simons theory has the peculiar property that its one-form symmetry defects have non-trivial braiding, namely they are charged under the same symmetry they generate, which is then anomalous. This poses a few puzzles in describing the corresponding Symmetry TFT in a four-dimensional bulk. First, the braiding between lines at the boundary seems to be ill-defined when such lines are pulled into the bulk. Second, the Symmetry TFT appears to be too trivial to allow for topological boundary conditions encoding all the different global variants. We show that both of these puzzles can be solved by including endable (tubular) surfaces in the class of bulk topological operators one has to consider. In this way, we are able to reproduce all global variants of the theory, with their symmetries and their anomalies. We check the validity of our proposal also against a top-down holographic realization of the same class of theories.

$\mathcal{N}=2$ SYK models with dynamical bosons and fermions

We study a class of SYK models with $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetry, described by $N$ fermions in chiral Fermi multiplets, as well as $\alpha N$ first-order bosons in chiral multiplets. The interactions are characterized by two integers $(p,q)$. We focus on the large $N$ and low energy limit of these models. Despite the presence of dynamical bosons, we find conformal behavior akin to the standard SYK model. We use $\mathcal{I}$-extremization of a Witten index to study the supersymmetric solutions. In particular, we find an exact expression for the entropy, which matches the numerical solutions to the Schwinger-Dyson equations. We further solve the model both in the large $p$ and large $p,q$ limits. Numerically, we verify our analytical results and obtain estimates for the Schwarzian coupling in the near zero-temperature limit. We also study the low-lying spectrum of operators to determine the parameter ranges where the Schwarzian mode dominates the IR dynamics. Lastly, we study out-of-time-ordered correlators to show that the model is maximally chaotic.

Anomalies and gauging of U(1) symmetries

We propose the Symmetry TFT for theories with a $U(1)$ symmetry in arbitrary dimension. The Symmetry TFT describes the structure of the symmetry, its anomalies, and the possible topological manipulations. It is constructed as a BF theory of gauge fields for groups $U(1)$ and $\mathbb{R}$, and contains a continuum of topological operators. We also propose an operation that produces the Symmetry TFT for the theory obtained by dynamically gauging the $U(1)$ symmetry. We discuss many examples. As an interesting outcome, we obtain the Symmetry TFT for the non-invertible $\mathbb{Q}/\mathbb{Z}$ chiral symmetry in four dimensions.

Non-invertible symmetries along 4d RG flows

We explore novel examples of RG flows preserving a non-invertible self-duality symmetry. Our main focus is on $\mathcal{N}=1$ quadratic superpotential deformations of 4d $\mathcal{N}=4$ super-Yang-Mills theory with gauge algebra $\mathfrak{su}(N)$. A theory that can be obtained in this way is the so-called $\mathcal{N}=1^*$ SYM where all adjoint chiral multiplets have a mass. Such IR theory exhibits a rich structure of vacua which we thoroughly examine. Our analysis elucidates the physics of spontaneous breaking of self-duality symmetry occurring in the degenerate gapped vacua. The construction can be generalized, taking as UV starting point a theory of class $\mathcal{S}$, to demonstrate how non-invertible self-duality symmetries exist in a variety of $\mathcal{N}=1$ SCFTs. We finally apply this understanding to prove that the conifold theory has a non-invertible self-duality symmetry.

A quantum mechanics for magnetic horizons

We construct an $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric gauged quantum mechanics, by starting from the 3d Chern-Simons-matter theory holographically dual to massive Type IIA string theory on AdS$_4 \times S^6$, and Kaluza-Klein reducing on $S^2$ with a background that is dual to the asymptotics of static dyonic BPS black holes in AdS$_4$. The background involves a choice of gauge fluxes, that we fix via a saddle-point analysis of the 3d topologically twisted index at large $N$. The ground-state degeneracy of the effective quantum mechanics reproduces the entropy of BPS black holes, and we expect its low-lying spectrum to contain information about near-extremal horizons. Interestingly, the model has a large number of statistically-distributed couplings, reminiscent of SYK models.

Anomalies of non-invertible self-duality symmetries: fractionalization and gauging

We study anomalies of non-invertible duality symmetries in both 2d and 4d, employing the tool of the Symmetry TFT. In the 2d case we rephrase the known obstruction theory for the Tambara-Yamagami fusion category in a way easily generalizable to higher dimensions. In both cases we find two obstructions to gauging duality defects. The first obstruction requires the existence of a duality-invariant Lagrangian algebra in a certain Dijkgraaf-Witten theory in one dimension more. In particular, intrinsically non-invertible (a.k.a. group theoretical) duality symmetries are necessarily anomalous. The second obstruction requires the vanishing of a pure anomaly for the invertible duality symmetry. This however depends on further data. In 2d this is specified by a choice of equivariantization for the duality-invariant Lagrangian algebra. We propose and verify that this is equivalent to a choice of symmetry fractionalization for the invertible duality symmetry. The latter formulation has a natural generalization to 4d and allows us to give a compact characterization of the anomaly. We comment on various possible applications of our results to self-dual theories.

The holography of non-invertible self-duality symmetries

We study how non-invertible self-duality defects arise in theories with a holographic dual. We focus on the paradigmatic example of $\mathfrak{su}(N)$ $\mathcal{N} = 4$ SYM. The theory is known to have non-invertible duality and triality defects at $\tau =i$ and $\tau = e^{2 \pi i /3}$, respectively. At these points in the gravitational moduli space, the gauged $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ duality symmetry of type IIB string theory is spontaneously broken to a finite subgroup $G$, giving rise to a discrete emergent $G$ gauge field. After reduction on the internal manifold, the low-energy physics is dominated by an interesting 5d Chern-Simons theory, further gauged by $G$, that we analyze and which gives rise to the self-duality defects in the boundary theory. Using the five-dimensional bulk theory, we compute the fusion rules of those defects in detail. The methods presented here are general and may be used to investigate such symmetries in other theories with a gravity dual.

Factorization and global symmetries in holography

We consider toy models of holography arising from 3d Chern-Simons theory. In this context a duality to an ensemble average over 2d CFTs has been recently proposed. We put forward an alternative approach in which, rather than summing over bulk geometries, one gauges a one-form global symmetry of the bulk theory. This accomplishes two tasks: it ensures that the bulk theory has no global symmetries, as expected for a theory of quantum gravity, and it makes the partition function on spacetimes with boundaries coincide with that of a modular-invariant 2d CFT on the boundary. In particular, on wormhole geometries one finds a factorized answer for the partition function. In the case of non-Abelian Chern-Simons theories, the relevant one-form symmetry is non-invertible, and its gauging corresponds to the condensation of a Lagrangian anyon.

Conformality Loss, Walking, and 4D Complex Conformal Field Theories at Weak Coupling

Four-dimensional gauge theories with matter can have regions in parameter space, often dubbed conformal windows, where they flow in the infrared to non-trivial conformal field theories. It has been conjectured that conformality can be lost because of merging of two nearby fixed points that move into the complex plane, and that a walking dynamics governed by scaling dimensions of operators defined at such complex fixed points can occur. We find controlled, parametrically weakly coupled, and ultraviolet-complete 4D gauge theories that explicitly realize this scenario. We show how the walking dynamics is controlled by the coupling of a double-trace operator that crosses marginality. The walking regime ends when the renormalization group flow of this coupling leads to a (weak) first-order phase transition with Coleman-Weinberg symmetry breaking. A light dilaton-like scalar particle appears in the spectrum, but it is not parametrically lighter than the other excitations.

A gravity interpretation for the Bethe Ansatz expansion of the $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM index

The superconformal index of the $\mathcal{N}=4$ SU(N) supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory counts the 1/16-BPS states in this theory, and has been used via the AdS/CFT correspondence to count black hole microstates of 1/16-BPS black holes. On one hand, this index may be related to the Euclidean partition function of the theory on $S^3\times S^1$ with complex chemical potentials, which maps by the AdS/CFT correspondence to a sum over Euclidean gravity solutions. On the other hand, the index may be expressed as a sum over solutions to Bethe Ansatz Equations (BAEs). We show that the known solutions to the BAEs that have a good large $N$ limit, for the case of equal chemical potentials for the two angular momenta, have a one-to-one mapping to (complex) Euclidean black hole solutions on the gravity side. This mapping captures both the leading contribution from the classical gravity action (of order $N^2$), as well as non-perturbative corrections in $1/N$, which on the gravity side are related to wrapped D3-branes. Some of the BA solutions map to orbifolds of the standard Euclidean black hole solutions (that obey exactly the same boundary conditions as the other solutions). A priori there are many more gravitational solutions than Bethe Ansatz solutions, but we show that by considering the non-perturbative effects, the extra solutions are ruled out, leading to a precise match between the solutions on both sides.

Superconformal index of low-rank gauge theories via the Bethe Ansatz

We study the Bethe Ansatz formula for the superconformal index, in the case of 4d $\mathcal{N}=4$ super-Yang-Mills with gauge group $SU(N)$. We observe that not all solutions to the Bethe Ansatz Equations (BAEs) contribute to the index, and thus formulate "reduced BAEs" such that all and only their solutions contribute. We then propose, sharpening a conjecture of Arabi Ardehali et al. [arXiv:1912.04169], that there is a one-to-one correspondence between branches of solutions to the reduced BAEs and vacua of the 4d $\mathcal{N}=1^*$ theory. We test the proposal in the case of $SU(2)$ and $SU(3)$. In the case of $SU(3)$, we confirm that there is a continuous family of solutions, whose contribution to the index is non-vanishing.

Superconformal indices at large $N$ and the entropy of AdS$_5$ $\times$ SE$_5$ black holes

The large $N$ limit of the four-dimensional superconformal index was computed and successfully compared to the entropy of a class of AdS$_5$ black holes only in the particular case of equal angular momenta. Using the Bethe Ansatz formulation, we compute the index at large $N$ with arbitrary chemical potentials for all charges and angular momenta, for general $\mathcal{N}=1$ four-dimensional conformal theories with a holographic dual. We conjecture and bring some evidence that a particular universal contribution to the sum over Bethe vacua dominates the index at large $N$. For $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM, this contribution correctly leads to the entropy of BPS Kerr-Newman black holes in AdS$_5 \times S^5$ for arbitrary values of the conserved charges, thus completing the microscopic derivation of their microstates. We also consider theories dual to AdS$_5 \times \mathrm{SE}_5$, where SE$_5$ is a Sasaki-Einstein manifold. We first check our results against the so-called universal black hole. We then explicitly construct the near-horizon geometry of BPS Kerr-Newman black holes in AdS$_5 \times T^{1,1}$, charged under the baryonic symmetry of the conifold theory and with equal angular momenta. We compute the entropy of these black holes using the attractor mechanism and find complete agreement with the field theory predictions.
