Metric Properties of the Fuzzy Sphere

The fuzzy sphere, as a quantum metric space, carries a sequence of metrics which we describe in detail. We show that the Bloch coherent states, with these spectral distances, form a sequence of metric spaces that converge to the round sphere in the high-spin limit.

Geometry of Quantum Projective Spaces

In recent years, several quantizations of real manifolds have been studied, in particular from the point of view of Connes' noncommutative geometry. Less is known for complex noncommutative spaces. In this paper, we review some recent results about the geometry of complex quantum projective spaces.

The spectral distance on the Moyal plane

We study the noncommutative geometry of the Moyal plane from a metric point of view. Starting from a non compact spectral triple based on the Moyal deformation A of the algebra of Schwartz functions on R^2, we explicitly compute Connes' spectral distance between the pure states of A corresponding to eigenfunctions of the quantum harmonic oscillator. For other pure states, we provide a lower bound to the spectral distance, and show that the latest is not always finite. As a consequence, we show that the spectral triple [20] is not a spectral metric space in the sense of [5]. This motivates the study of truncations of the spectral triple, based on M_n(C) with arbitrary integer n, which turn out to be compact quantum metric spaces in the sense of Rieffel. Finally the distance is explicitly computed for n=2.

Quantum Isometries of the finite noncommutative geometry of the Standard Model

We compute the quantum isometry group of the finite noncommutative geometry F describing the internal degrees of freedom in the Standard Model of particle physics. We show that this provides genuine quantum symmetries of the spectral triple corresponding to M x F where M is a compact spin manifold. We also prove that the bosonic and fermionic part of the spectral action are preserved by these symmetries.

A View on Optimal Transport from Noncommutative Geometry

We discuss the relation between the Wasserstein distance of order 1 between probability distributions on a metric space, arising in the study of Monge-Kantorovich transport problem, and the spectral distance of noncommutative geometry. Starting from a remark of Rieffel on compact manifolds, we first show that on any - i.e. non-necessary compact - complete Riemannian spin manifolds, the two distances coincide. Then, on convex manifolds in the sense of Nash embedding, we provide some natural upper and lower bounds to the distance between any two probability distributions. Specializing to the Euclidean space $R^n$, we explicitly compute the distance for a particular class of distributions generalizing Gaussian wave packet. Finally we explore the analogy between the spectral and the Wasserstein distances in the noncommutative case, focusing on the standard model and the Moyal plane. In particular we point out that in the two-sheet space of the standard model, an optimal-transport interpretation of the metric requires a cost function that does not vanish on the diagonal. The latest is similar to the cost function occurring in the relativistic heat equation.

Anti-selfdual Connections on the Quantum Projective Plane: Monopoles

We present several results on the geometry of the quantum projective plane CP2q. They include: explicit generators for the K-theory and the K-homology; a real calculus with a Hodge star operator; anti-selfdual connections on line bundles with explicit computation of the corresponding 'monopoles' and 'instanton' charges; complete diagonalization of gauged Laplacians on these line bundles; quantum invariants via equivariant K-theory and q-indices.

Geometry of the quantum projective plane

We review some of the geometry of the quantum projective plane with emphasis on the construction of a differential calculus and of the Dirac operator (of a spin^c-structure). We also report on anti-self-dual connections on line bundles, the spectrum of associated (gauged) Laplacian operators, and on classical and quantum characteristic classes.

Bounded and unbounded Fredholm modules for quantum projective spaces

We construct explicit generators of the K-theory and K-homology of the coordinate algebra of `functions' on quantum projective spaces. We also sketch a construction of unbounded Fredholm modules, that is to say Dirac-like operators and spectral triples of any positive real dimension.

Dirac Operators on Quantum Projective Spaces

We construct a family of self-adjoint operators D_N which have compact resolvent and bounded commutators with the coordinate algebra of the quantum projective space CP_q(l), for any l>1 and 0<q<1. They provide 0^+ dimensional equivariant even spectral triples. If l is odd and N=(l+1)/2, the spectral triple is real with KO-dimension 2l mod 8.

Noncommutative Geometry and Quantum Group Symmetries

Quantum groups and quantum homogeneous spaces - developed by several authors since the 80's - provide a large class of examples of algebras which for many reasons we interpret as `coordinate algebras' over noncommutative spaces. This dissertation is an attempt to understand them from the point of view of Connes' noncommutative geometry.

The Noncommutative Geometry of the Quantum Projective Plane

We study the spectral geometry of the quantum projective plane CP^2_q, a deformation of the complex projective plane CP^2, the simplest example of a spin^c manifold which is not spin. In particular, we construct a Dirac operator D which gives a 0^+ summable spectral triple, equivariant under U_q(su(3)). The square of D is a central element for which left and right actions on spinors coincide, a fact that is exploited to compute explicitly its spectrum.

The Isospectral Dirac Operator on the 4-dimensional Orthogonal Quantum Sphere

Equivariance under the action of Uq(so(5)) is used to compute the left regular and (chiral) spinorial representations of the algebra of the orthogonal quantum 4-sphere S^4_q. These representations are the constituents of a spectral triple on this sphere with a Dirac operator which is isospectral to the canonical one on the round undeformed four-sphere and which gives metric dimension four for the noncommutative geometry. Non-triviality of the geometry is proved by pairing the associated Fredholm module with an `instanton' projection. We also introduce a real structure which satisfies all required properties modulo smoothing operators.

Dirac operators on all Podles quantum spheres

We construct spectral triples on all Podles quantum spheres. These noncommutative geometries are equivariant for a left action of $U_q(su(2))$ and are regular, even and of metric dimension 2. They are all isospectral to the undeformed round geometry of the 2-sphere. There is also an equivariant real structure for which both the commutant property and the first order condition for the Dirac operators are valid up to infinitesimals of arbitrary order.

Local Index Formula on the Equatorial Podles Sphere

We discuss spectral properties of the equatorial Podles sphere. As a preparation we also study the `degenerate' (i.e. $q=0$) case (related to the quantum disk). We consider two different spectral triples: one related to the Fock representation of the Toeplitz algebra and the isopectral one. After the identification of the smooth pre-$C^*$-algebra we compute the dimension spectrum and residues. We check the nontriviality of the (noncommutative) Chern character of the associated Fredholm modules by computing the pairing with the fundamental projector of the $C^*$-algebra (the nontrivial generator of the $K_0$-group) as well as the pairing with the $q$-analogue of the Bott projector. Finally, we show that the local index formula is trivially satisfied.

Spectral geometry of $κ$-Minkowski space

After recalling Snyder's idea of using vector fields over a smooth manifold as `coordinates on a noncommutative space', we discuss a two dimensional toy-model whose `dual' noncommutative coordinates form a Lie algebra: this is the well known $κ$-Minkowski space. We show how to improve Snyder's idea using the tools of quantum groups and noncommutative geometry. We find a natural representation of the coordinate algebra of $κ$-Minkowski as linear operators on an Hilbert space study its `spectral properties' and discuss how to obtain a Dirac operator for this space. We describe two Dirac operators. The first is associated with a spectral triple. We prove that the cyclic integral of M. Dimitrijevic et al. can be obtained as Dixmier trace associated to this triple. The second Dirac operator is equivariant for the action of the quantum Euclidean group, but it has unbounded commutators with the algebra.

Action functional for kappa-Minkowski Noncommutative Spacetime

We examine some alternative possibilities for an action functional for $κ$-Minkowski noncommutative spacetime, with an approach which should be applicable to other spacetimes with coordinate-dependent commutators of the spacetime coordinates ($[x_μ,x_ν]=f_{μ,ν}(x)$). Early works on $κ$-Minkowski focused on $κ$-Poincaré covariance and the dependence of the action functional on the choice of Weyl map, renouncing to invariance under cyclic permutations of the factors composing the argument of the action functional. A recent paper (hep-th/0307149), by Dimitrijevic, Jonke, Moller, Tsouchnika, Wess and Wohlgenannt, focused on a specific choice of Weyl map and, setting aside the issue of $κ$-Poincaré covariance of the action functional, introduced in implicit form a cyclicity-inducing measure. We provide an explicit formula for (and derivation of) a choice of measure which indeed ensures cyclicity of the action functional, and we show that the same choice of measure is applicable to all the most used choices of Weyl map. We find that this ``cyclicity-inducing measure'' is not covariant under $κ$-Poincaré transformations. We also notice that the cyclicity-inducing measure can be straightforwardly derived using a map which connects the $κ$-Minkowski spacetime coordinates and the spacetime coordinates of a ``canonical'' noncommutative spacetime, with coordinate-independent commutators.

Comparison of relativity theories with observer-independent scales of both velocity and length/mass

We consider the two most studied proposals of relativity theories with observer-independent scales of both velocity and length/mass: the one discussed by Amelino-Camelia as illustrative example for the original proposal (gr-qc/0012051) of theories with two relativistic invariants, and an alternative more recently proposed by Magueijo and Smolin (hep-th/0112090). We show that these two relativistic theories are much more closely connected than it would appear on the basis of a naive analysis of their original formulations. In particular, in spite of adopting a rather different formal description of the deformed boost generators, they end up assigning the same dependence of momentum on rapidity, which can be described as the core feature of these relativistic theories. We show that this observation can be used to clarify the concepts of particle mass, particle velocity, and energy-momentum-conservation rules in these theories with two relativistic invariants.
