Low Mach number limit for degenerate Navier-Stokes equations in presence of strong stratification

In this paper, we investigate the low Mach and low Froude numbers limit for the compressible Navier-Stokes equations with degenerate, density-dependent, viscosity coefficient, in the strong stratification regime. We consider the case of a general pressure law with singular component close to vacuum, and general ill-prepared initial data. We perform our study in the three-dimensional periodic domain. We rigorously justify the convergence to the generalised anelastic approximation, which is used extensively to model atmospheric flows.

Ergodic theory for energetically open compressible fluid flows

The ergodic hypothesis is examined for energetically open fluid systems represented by the barotropic Navier--Stokes equations with general inflow/outflow boundary conditions. We show that any globally bounded trajectory generates a stationary statistical solution, which is interpreted as a stochastic process with continuous trajectories supported by the family of weak solutions of the problem. The abstract Birkhoff--Khinchin theorem is applied to obtain convergence (in expectation and a.s.) of ergodic averages for any bounded Borel measurable function of state variables associated to any stationary solution. Finally, we show that validity of the ergodic hypothesis is determined by the behavior of entire solutions (i.e. a solution defined for any $t\in R$). In particular, the ergodic averages converge for any trajectory provided its $ω-$limit set in the trajectory space supports a unique (in law) stationary solution.

Symmetry breaking in ideal magnetohydrodynamics: the role of the velocity

The ideal magnetohydrodynamic equations are, roughly speaking, a quasi-linear symmetric hyperbolic system of PDEs, but not all the unknowns play the same role in this system. Indeed, in the regime of small magnetic fields, the equations are close to the incompressible Euler equations. In the present paper, we adopt this point of view to study questions linked with the lifespan of strong solutions to the ideal magnetohydrodynamic equations. First of all, we prove a continuation criterion in terms of the velocity field only. Secondly, we refine the explicit lower bound for the lifespan of $2$-D flows found in [11], by relaxing the regularity assumptions on the initial magnetic field.

Some remarks on steady solutions to the Euler system in $\mathbb{R}^d$

We show that the Euler system of gas dynamics in $\mathbb{R}^d$, $d=2,3$, with positive far field density and arbitrary far field entropy, admits infinitely many steady solutions with compactly supported velocity. The same proof yields a similar result for the incompressible Euler system with variable density. In particular, these are examples of global in time smooth (non-trivial) solutions for the corresponding time-dependent systems.

Anisotropy and stratification effects in the dynamics of fast rotating compressible fluids

The primary goal of this paper is to develop robust methods to handle two ubiquitous features appearing in the modeling of geophysical flows: (i) the anisotropy of the viscous stress tensor, (ii) stratification effects. We focus on the barotropic Navier-Stokes equations with Coriolis and gravitational forces. Two results are the main contributions of the paper. Firstly, we establish a local well-posedness result for finite-energy solutions, via a maximal regularity approach. This method allows us to circumvent the use of the effective viscous flux, which plays a key role in the weak solutions theories of Lions-Feireisl and Hoff, but seems to be restricted to isotropic viscous stress tensors. Moreover, our approach is sturdy enough to take into account non constant reference density states; this is crucial when dealing with stratification effects. Secondly, we study the structure of the solutions to the previous model in the regime when the Rossby, Mach and Froude numbers are of the same order of magnitude. We prove an error estimate on the relative entropy between actual solutions and their approximation by a large-scale quasi-geostrophic flow supplemented with Ekman boundary layers. Our analysis holds for a large class of barotropic pressure laws.

Elsässer formulation of the ideal MHD and improved lifespan in two space dimensions

In the present paper, we show an improved lower bound for the lifespan of the solutions to the ideal MHD equations in the case of space dimension $d=2$. In particular, for small initial magnetic fields $b_0$ of size (say) $\varepsilon>0$, the lifespan $T_\varepsilon>0$ of the corresponding solution goes to $+\infty$ in the limit $\varepsilon\rightarrow0^+$. Such a result does not follow from standard quasi-linear hyperbolic theory. For proving it, three are the crucial ingredients: first of all, to work in endpoint Besov spaces $B^s_{\infty,r}$, under the condition $s>1$ and $r\in[1,+\infty]$ or $s=r=1$; moreover, to use the Elsässer formulation of the ideal MHD, recasted in its vorticity formulation; finally, to take advantage of the special structure of the non-linear terms. We also rigorously establish the equivalence between the original formulation of the ideal MHD and its Elsässer formulation for a large class of weak solutions. The construction of explicit counterexamples shows the sharpness of our assumptions. Related non-uniqueness issues are discussed as well.

Rigorous derivation and well-posedness of a quasi-homogeneous ideal MHD system

The goal of this paper is twofold. On the one hand, we introduce a quasi-homogeneous version of the classical ideal MHD system and study its well-posedness in critical Besov spaces $B^s_{p,r}(\mathbb{R}^d)$, $d\geq2$, with $1 1+d/p$ and $r\in[1,+\infty]$, or $s=1+d/p$ and $r=1$. A key ingredient is the reformulation of the system \textsl{via} the so-called Elsässer variables. On the other hand, we give a rigorous justification of quasi-homogeneous MHD models, both in the ideal and in the dissipative cases: when $d=2$, we will derive them from a non-homogeneous incompressible MHD system with Coriolis force, in the regime of low Rossby number and for small density variations around a constant state. Our method of proof relies on a relative entropy inequality for the primitive system, and yields precise rates of convergence, depending on the size of the initial data, on the order of the Rossby number and on the regularity of the viscosity and resistivity coefficients.

A multi-scale problem for viscous heat-conducting fluids in fast rotation

In the present paper, we study the combined incompressible and fast rotation limits for the full Navier-Stokes-Fourier system with Coriolis, centrifugal and gravitational forces, in the regime of small Mach, Froude and Rossby numbers and for general ill-prepared initial data. We consider both the isotropic scaling (where all the numbers have the same order of magnitude) and the multi-scale case (where some effect is predominant with respect to the others). In the case when the Mach number is of higher order than the Rossby number, we prove that the limit dynamics is described by an incompressible Oberbeck-Boussinesq system, where the velocity field is horizontal (according to the Taylor-Proudman theorem), but vertical effects on the temperature equation are not negligible. Instead, when the Mach and Rossby numbers have the same order of magnitude, and in absence of the centrifugal force, we show convergence to a quasi-geostrophic equation for a stream function of the limit velocity field, coupled with a transport-diffusion equation for a new unknown, which links the target density and temperature profiles. The proof of the convergence is based on a compensated compactness argument. The key point is to identify some compactness properties hidden in the system of acoustic-Poincaré waves. Compared to previous results, our method enables first of all to treat the whole range of parameters in the multi-scale problem, and also to consider a low Froude number regime with the somehow critical choice $Fr=\sqrt{Ma}$, where $Ma$ is the Mach number. This allows us to capture some (low) stratification effects in the limit.

Statistical solutions to the barotropic Navier-Stokes system

We introduce a new concept of statistical solution in the framework of weak solutions to the barotropic Navier--Stokes system with inhomogeneous boundary conditions. Statistical solution is a family $\{ M_t \}_{t \geq 0}$ of Markov operators on the set of probability measures $\mathfrak{P}[\mathcal{D}]$ on the data space $\mathcal{D}$ containing the initial data $[\varrho_0, \mathbf{m}_0]$ and the boundary data $\mathbf{d}_B$. (1) $\{ M_t \}_{t \geq 0}$ possesses a.a. semigroup property, $ M_{t + s}(ν) = M_t \circ M_s(ν)$ for any $t \geq 0$, a.a. $s \geq 0$, and any $ν\in \mathfrak{P}[\mathcal{D}]$. (2) $\{ M_t \}_{t \geq 0}$ is deterministic when restricted to deterministic data, specifically $ M_t(δ_{[\varrho_0, \mathbf{m}_0, \mathbf{d}_B]}) = δ_{[\varrho(t, \cdot), \mathbf{m}(t, \cdot), \mathbf{d}_B]}, $ where $[\varrho, \mathbf{m}]$ is a finite energy weak solution of the Navier--Stokes system corresponding to the data $[\varrho_0, \mathbf{m}_0, \mathbf{d}_B] \in \mathcal{D}$. (3) $M_t: \mathfrak{P}[\mathcal{D}] \to \mathfrak{P}[\mathcal{D}]$ is continuous in a suitable Bregman--Wasserstein metric at measures supported by the data giving rise to regular solutions.

No loss of derivatives for hyperbolic operators with Zygmund-continuous coefficients in time

In this note we prove a well-posedness result, without loss of derivatives, for strictly hyperbolic wave operators having coefficients which are Zygmund-continuous in the time variable and Lipschitz-continuous in the space variables. The proof is based on Tarama's idea of introducing a lower order corrector in the energy, in order to produce special algebraic cancellations when computing its time derivative, combined with paradifferential calculus with parameters, in order to handle the low regularity of the coefficients with respect to $x$.

On the fast rotation asymptotics of a non-homogeneous incompressible MHD system

This paper is devoted to the analysis of a singular perturbation problem for a $2$-D incompressible MHD system with density variations and Coriolis force, in the limit of small Rossby numbers. Two regimes are considered. The first one is the quasi-homogeneous regime, where the densities are small perturbations around a constant state. The limit dynamics is identified as an incompressible homogeneous MHD system, coupled with an additional transport equation for the limit of the density variations. The second case is the fully non-homogeneous regime, where the densities vary around a general non-constant profile. In this case, in the limit, the equation for the magnetic field combines with an underdetermined linear equation, which links the limit density variation function with the limit velocity field. The proof is based on a compensated compactness argument, which enables us to consider general ill-prepared initial data. An application of Di Perna-Lions theory for transport equations allows to treat the case of density-dependent viscosity and resistivity coefficients.

Incompressible and fast rotation limit for barotropic Navier-Stokes equations at large Mach numbers

In the present paper we study the incompressible and fast rotation limit for the barotropic Navier-Stokes equations with Coriolis force, in the case when the Mach number $\rm Ma$ is large with respect to the Rossby number $\rm Ro$: namely, we focus on the regime ${\rm Ro}\ll{\rm Ma}$. For this, we follow a recent approach by Danchin and Mucha in \cite{D-M} and take also a large bulk viscosity coefficient. We prove that the limit dynamics is described by an incompressible Navier-Stokes type equation, recasted in the vorticy formulation, where however an additional unknown, linked to density oscillations around a fixed constant reference state, comes into play. The proof of the convergence is based on a compensated compactness argument and on the derivation of sharp decay estimates for solutions to a heat equation with fast diffusion in time.

A theoretical investigation of Brockett's ensemble optimal control problems

This paper is devoted to the analysis of problems of optimal control of ensembles governed by the Liouville (or continuity) equation. The formulation and study of these problems have been put forward in recent years by R.W. Brockett, with the motivation that ensemble control may provide a more general and robust control framework. Following Brockett's formulation of ensemble control, a Liouville equation with unbounded drift function, and a class of cost functionals that include tracking of ensembles and different control costs is considered. For the theoretical investigation of the resulting optimal control problems, a well-posedness theory in weighted Sobolev spaces is presented for the Liouville and transport equations. Then, a class of non-smooth optimal control problems governed by the Liouville equation is formulated and existence of optimal controls is proved. Furthermore, optimal controls are characterised as solutions to optimality systems; such a characterisation is the key to get (under suitable assumptions) also uniqueness of optimal controls.

A well-posedness result for viscous compressible fluids with only bounded density

We are concerned with the existence and uniqueness of solutions with only bounded density for the barotropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations. Assuming that the initial velocity has slightly sub-critical regularity and that the initial density is a small perturbation (in the $L^\infty$ norm) of a positive constant, we prove the existence of local-in-time solutions. In the case where the density takes two constant values across a smooth interface (or, more generally, has striated regularity with respect to some nondegenerate family of vector-fields), we get uniqueness. This latter result supplements the work by D. Hoff in [26] with a uniqueness statement, and is valid in any dimension $d\geq2$ and for general pressure laws.

Highly rotating viscous compressible fluids in presence of capillarity effects

In this paper we study a singular limit problem for a Navier-Stokes-Korteweg system with Coriolis force, in the domain $\R^2\times\,]0,1[\,$ and for general ill-prepared initial data. Taking the Mach and the Rossby numbers to be proportional to a small parameter $\veps$ going to $0$, we perform the incompressible and high rotation limits simultaneously. Moreover, we consider both the constant capillarity and vanishing capillarity regimes. In this last case, the limit problem is identified as a $2$-D incompressible Navier-Stokes equation in the variables orthogonal to the rotation axis. If the capillarity is constant, instead, the limit equation slightly changes, keeping however a similar structure. Various rates at which the capillarity coefficient can vanish are also considered: in most cases this will produce an anisotropic scaling in the system, for which a different analysis is needed. The proof of the results is based on suitable applications of the RAGE theorem.

Asymptotics of fast rotating density-dependent incompressible fluids in two space dimensions

In the present paper we study the fast rotation limit for viscous incompressible fluids with variable density, whose motion is influenced by the Coriolis force. We restrict our analysis to two dimensional flows. In the case when the initial density is a small perturbation of a constant state, we recover in the limit the convergence to the homogeneous incompressible Navier-Stokes equations (up to an additional term, due to density fluctuations). For general non-homogeneous fluids, the limit equations are instead linear, and the limit dynamics is described in terms of the vorticity and the density oscillation function: we lack enough regularity on the latter to prove convergence on the momentum equation itself. The proof of both results relies on a compensated compactness argument, which enables one to treat also the possible presence of vacuum.

Global well-posedness and long-time dynamics for a higher order Quasi-Geostrophic type equation

In this paper we study a higher order viscous quasi-geostrophic type equation. This equation was derived in [11] as the limit dynamics of a singularly perturbed Navier-Stokes-Korteweg system with Coriolis force, when the Mach, Rossby and Weber numbers go to zero at the same rate. The scope of the present paper is twofold. First of all, we investigate well-posedness of such a model on the whole space $\R^2$: we prove that it is well-posed in $H^s$ for any $s\geq3$, globally in time. Interestingly enough, we show that this equation owns two levels of energy estimates, for which one gets existence and uniqueness of weak solutions with different regularities (namely, $H^3$ and $H^4$ regularities); this fact can be viewed as a remainder of the so called BD-entropy structure of the original system. In the second part of the paper we investigate the long-time behaviour of these solutions. We show that they converge to the solution of the corresponding linear parabolic type equation, with same initial datum and external force. Our proof is based on dispersive estimates both for the solutions to the linear and non-linear problems.

On the Cauchy problem for microlocally symmetrizable hyperbolic systems with log-Lipschitz coefficients

The present paper concerns the well-posedness of the Cauchy problem for microlocally symmetrizable hyperbolic systems whose coefficients and symmetrizer are log-Lipschitz continuous, uniformly in time and space variables. For the global in space problem we establish energy estimates with finite loss of derivatives, which is linearly increasing in time. This implies well-posedness in $H^\infty$, if the coefficients enjoy enough smoothness in $x$. From this result, by standard arguments (i.e. extension and convexification) we deduce also local existence and uniqueness. A huge part of the analysis is devoted to give an appropriate sense to the Cauchy problem, which is not evident a priori in our setting, due to the very low regularity of coefficients and solutions.
