On strong ergodic properties of quantum dynamical systems

We show that the the shift on the reduced C*--algebras of RD--groups, including the free group on infinitely many generators, and the amalgamated free product C*--algebras, enjoys the very strong ergodic property of the convergence to the equilibrium. Namely, the free shift converges, pointwise in the weak topology, to the conditional expectation onto the fixed--point subalgebra. Provided the invariant state is unique, we also show that such an ergodic property cannot be fulfilled by any classical dynamical system, unless it is conjugate to the trivial one--point dynamical system.

The entangled ergodic theorem and an ergodic theorem for quantum "diagonal measures"

Let $U$ be a unitary operator acting on the Hilbert space $H$, $\a:\{1,..., 2k\}\mapsto\{1,..., k\}$ a pair--partition, and finally $A_{1},...,A_{2k-1}\in B(H)$. We show that the ergodic average $$ \frac{1}{N^{k}}\sum_{n_{1},...,n_{k}=0}^{N-1} U^{n_{\a(1)}}A_{1}U^{n_{\a(2)}}... U^{n_{\a(2k-1)}}A_{2k-1}U^{n_{\a(2k)}} $$ converges in the strong operator topology when $H$ is generated by the eigenvectors of $U$, that is when the dynamics induced by the unitary $U$ on $H$ is almost periodic. This result improves the known ones relative to the entangled ergodic theorem. We also prove the noncommutative version of the ergodic result of H. Furstenberg relative to diagonal measures. This implies that ${\displaystyle \frac{1}{N}\sum_{n=0}^{N-1} U^{n}AU^{n}}$ converges in the strong operator topology for other interesting situations where the involved unitary operator does not generate an almost periodic dynamics, and the operator $A$ is noncompact.

New topics in ergodic theory

The entangled ergodic theorem concerns the study of the convergence in the strong, or merely weak operator topology, of the multiple Cesaro mean $$\frac{1}{N^{k}}\sum_{n_{1},...,n_{k}=0}^{N-1} U^{n_{\a(1)}}A_{1}U^{n_{\a(2)}}... U^{n_{\a(2k-1)}}A_{2k-1}U^{n_{\a(2k)}} ,$$ where $U$ is a unitary operator acting on the Hilbert space $H$, $\a:\{1,..., m\}\mapsto\{1,..., k\}$ is a partition of the set made of $m$ elements in $k$ parts, and finally $A_{1},...,A_{2k-1}$ are bounded operators acting on $H$. While reviewing recent results about the entangled ergodic theorem, we provide some natural applications to dynamical systems based on compact operators. Namely, let $(\mathfrak A,α)$ be a $C^{*}$--dynamical system, where $\mathfrak A=K(H)$, and $α=ad(U)$ is an automorphism implemented by the unitary $U$. We show that $$\lim_{N\to+\infty}\frac{1}{N}\sum_{n=0}^{N-1}α^{n}=E ,$$ pointwise in the weak topology of $\K(H)$. Here, $E$ is a conditional expectation projecting onto the $C^{*}$--subalgebra $$\bigg(\bigoplus_{z\inσ_{\mathop{\rm pp}}(U)} E_{z}B(H)E_{z}\bigg)\bigcap K(H) .$$ If in addition $U$ is weakly mixing with $Ω\in H$ the unique up to a phase, invariant vector under $U$ and $ω=<\cdot Ω,Ω>$, we have the following recurrence result. If $A\in K(H)$ fulfils $ω(A)>0$, and $0 0$$ for each $N>N_{0}$.

Strict weak mixing of some C*-dynamical systems based on free shifts

We define a stronger property than unique ergodicity with respect to the fixed-point subalgebra previously investigated by Abadie and Dykema. Such a property is denoted as F-strict weak mixing (F stands for the Markov projection onto the fixed-point operator system). Then we show that the free shifts on the reduced C*-algebras of RD-groups, including the free group on infinitely many generators, and amalgamated free product C*-algebras, considered by Abadie and Dykema, are all strictly weak mixing and not merely uniquely ergodic.

Some topics in quantum disordered systems

We discuss some recent results connected with the properties of temperature states of quantum disordered systems. This analysis falls within the natural framework of operator algebras. Among the results quoted here, we recall some ergodic and spectral properties of KMS states, the possibility of defining the chemical potential independently of the disorder, and finally the question of the Gibbsianess for KMS states. This analysis can be considered as a step towards fully understanding the very complicated structure of the set of temperature states of quantum spin glasses, and its connection with the breakdown of the symmetry for replicas.

KMS states and the chemical potential for disordered systems

We extend the theory of the chemical potential associated to a compact separable gauge group to the case of disordered quantum systems. This is done in the natural framework of operator algebras. Among the other results, we show that the chemical potential does not depend on the disorder. The situation of the $n$--torus is treated in some detail. Indeed, provided that the zero--point is fixed independently on the disorder, the chemical potential is intrinsically defined in terms of the direct integral decomposition of the Connes--Radon--Nikodym cocycle associated to the KMS state $ω$ and its trasforms $ω\circρ$ by the localized automorphisms $ρ$ of the observable algebra, carrying the abelian charges of the model under consideration. This description parallels the analogous one relative to the usual (i.e. non disordered) quantum models.

Markov states on the CAR algebra

The program relative to the investigation of quantum Markov states for spin chains based on Canonical Anticommutation Relations algebra is carried on. This analysis provides a further step for a satisfactory theory of quantum Markov processes.

On factors associated with quantum Markov states corresponding to nearest neighbor models on a Cayley tree

In this paper we consider nearest neighbour models where the spin takes values in the set $Φ=\{\z_1,\z_2,...,\z_q\}$ and is assigned to the vertices of the Cayley tree ${\G}^k$. The Hamiltonian is defined by some given $λ$-function. We find a condition for the function $λ$ to determine the type of the von Neumann algebra generated by the GNS - construction associated with the quantum Markov state corresponding to the unordered phase of the $λ$-model. Also we give some physical applications of the obtained result.

Diagonalizability of non homogeneous quantum Markov states and associated von Neumann algebras

We clarify the meaning of diagonalizability of quantum Markov states. Then, we prove that each non homogeneous quantum Markov state is diagonalizable. Namely, for each Markov state $ϕ$ on the spin algebra $A:={\bar{\otimes_{j\in Z}M_{d_{j}}}^{C^{*}}}$ there exists a suitable maximal Abelian subalgebra $D\subset A$, a Umegaki conditional expectation $E:A\mapsto D$ and a Markov measure $μ$ on $spec(D)$ such that $ϕ=ϕ_μ\circ E$, the Markov state $ϕ_μ$, being the state on $D$ arising from the measure $μ$. An analogous result is true for non homogeneous quantum processes based on the forward or the backward chain. Besides, we determine the type of the von Neumann factors generated by GNS representation associated with translation invariant or periodic quantum Markov states.

Infinite dimensional entangled Markov chains

We continue the analysis of nontrivial examples of quantum Markov processes. This is done by applying the construction of entangled Markov chains obtained from classical Markov chains with infinite state--space. The formula giving the joint correlations arises from the corresponding classical formula by replacing the usual matrix multiplication by the Schur multiplication. In this way, we provide nontrivial examples of entangled Markov chains on $\bar{\cup_{J\subset Z} \bar{\otimes}_{J}F}^{C^{*}}$, $F$ being any infinite dimensional type $I$ factor, $J$ a finite interval of $Z$, and the bar the von Neumann tensor product between von Neumann algebras. We then have new nontrivial examples of quantum random walks which could play a rôle in quantum information theory. In view of applications to quantum statistical mechanics too, we see that the ergodic type of an entangled Markov chain is completely determined by the corresponding ergodic type of the underlying classical chain, provided that the latter admits an invariant probability distribution. This result parallels the corresponding one relative to the finite dimensional case. Finally, starting from random walks on discrete ICC groups, we exhibit examples of quantum Markov processes based on type $II_1$ von Neumann factors.

Operator space structures and the split property II

A characterization of the split property for an inclusion $N\subset M$ of $W^*$-factors with separable predual is established in terms of the canonical non-commutative $L^2$ embedding considered in \cite{B1,B2} $$ \F_2:a\in N\to \D_{M,\Om}^{1/4}a\Om\in L^2(M,\Om) $$ associated with an arbitrary fixed standard vector $\Om$ for $M$. This characterization follows an analogous characterization related to the canonical non-commutative $L^1$ embedding $$ \F_1:a\in N\to (\cdot\Om,J_{M,\Om}a\Om)\in L^1(M,\Om) $$ also considered in \cite{B1,B2} and studied in \cite{F}. The split property for a Quantum Field Theory is characterized by equivalent conditions relative to the non-commutative embeddings $\F_i$, $i=1,2$, constructed by the modular Hamiltonian of a privileged faithful state such as e.g. the vacuum state. The above characterization would be also useful for theories on a curved space-time where there exists no a-priori privileged state.

Some operator ideals in non-commutative functional analysis

We characterize classes of linear maps between operator spaces $E$, $F$ which factorize through maps arising in a natural manner via the Pisier vector-valued non-commutative $L^p$ spaces $S_p[E^*]$ based on the Schatten classes on the separable Hilbert space $l^2$. These classes of maps can be viewed as quasi-normed operator ideals in the category of operator spaces, that is in non-commutative (quantized) functional analysis. The case $p=2$ provides a Banach operator ideal and allows us to characterize the split property for inclusions of $W^*$-algebras by the 2-factorable maps. The various characterizations of the split property have interesting applications in Quantum Field Theory.
