Transverse-momentum-dependent gluon distribution functions in a spectator model

We present a model calculation of transverse-momentum-dependent distributions (TMDs) of gluons in the nucleon. The model is based on the assumption that a nucleon can emit a gluon, and what remains after the emission is treated as a single spectator particle. This spectator particle is considered to be on-shell, but its mass is allowed to take a continuous range of values, described by a spectral function. The nucleon-gluon-spectator coupling is described by an effective vertex containing two form factors. We fix the model parameters to obtain the best agreement with collinear gluon distributions extracted from global fits. We study the tomography in momentum space of gluons inside nucleons for various combinations of their polarizations. These can be used to make predictions of observables relevant for gluon TMD studies at current and future collider facilities.

High-energy resummation in heavy-quark pair hadroproduction

The inclusive hadroproduction of two heavy quarks, featuring a large separation in rapidity, is proposed as a novel probe channel of the Balitsky-Fadin-Kuraev-Lipatov (BFKL) approach. In a theoretical setup which includes full resummation of leading logarithms in the center-of-mass energy and partial resummation of the next-to-leading ones, predictions for the cross section and azimuthal coefficients are presented for kinematic configurations typical of current and possible future experimental analyses at the LHC.

Diffractive production of $Λ$ hyperons in the high-energy limit of strong interactions

We propose the study of the inclusive production of two $Λ$ hyperons or a single $Λ$-particle in association with a jet, featuring high transverse momenta and large separation in rapidity, as a probe channel of the resummation of energy logarithms in the QCD perturbative series. We give predictions, shaped on kinematic ranges typical of CMS and of the backward CASTOR detector, for cross section and azimuthal-correlation moments between the two emitted objects, showing how considering the tag of $Λ$ baryons eases the comparison between theoretical results and experimental data in the phenomenological context of semi-hard reactions.

New opportunities at the photon energy frontier

Ultra-peripheral collisions (UPCs) involving heavy ions and protons are the energy frontier for photon-mediated interactions. UPC photons can be used for many purposes, including probing low-$x$ gluons via photoproduction of dijets and vector mesons, probes of beyond-standard-model processes, such as those enabled by light-by-light scattering, and studies of two-photon production of the Higgs.

Unraveling the unintegrated gluon distribution in the proton via $ρ$-meson leptoproduction

Sufficiently inclusive processes, like the deep inelastic scattering (DIS), are described in terms of scale-dependent parton distributions, which correspond to the density of partons with a given longitudinal momentum fraction, integrated over the parton transverse momentum. For less inclusive processes, one needs to consider densities unintegrated over the transverse momentum. This work focuses on the unintegrated gluon distribution (UGD), describing the probability that a gluon can be emitted by a colliding proton, with definite longitudinal fraction and transverse momentum. Through the leptoproduction of the $ρ$-meson at HERA, existent models for the UGD will be investigated and compared with experimental data.

High-energy effects in forward inclusive dijet and hadron-jet production

Pursuing the goal to single out the validity region of the high-energy resummation, better known as BFKL approach, and to possibly disentangle BFKL effects from the ones coming from a DGLAP-inspired, fixed-order description, new predictions for the forward inclusive hadron-jet production, tailored on the CMS and CASTOR acceptances, are given.

Inclusive hadron-jet production at the LHC

We suggest the inclusive detection at the LHC of a light charged hadron and of a jet widely separated in rapidity as a new probe channel for the study of the BFKL resummation. Predictions for cross section and azimuthal correlations, shaped on the CMS and CASTOR acceptances, are presented.

Leptoproduction of $ρ$-mesons as discriminator for the unintegrated gluon distribution in the proton

The gluon content of the proton, in the high-energy regime, is embodied by the unintegrated gluon distribution (UGD), which describes the gluon emission probability, with a given longitudinal momentum fraction and transverse momentum. The UGD, formulated within the $κ$-factorization approach, has universal validity and several models for it have been proposed so far. We will show that the polarized $ρ$-meson leptoproduction at HERA is a not trivial testfield for discriminating among existing models of UGD.

Unintegrated gluon distribution from forward polarized $ρ$-electroproduction

We present here some arguments to support our suggestion that data on the helicity structure for the hard exclusive electroproduction of $ρ$ mesons at HERA (and in possible future high-energy electron-proton colliders) provide useful information to constrain the $κ$-shape of the unintegrated gluon distribution in the proton.

Hadron-jet correlations in high-energy hadronic collisions at the LHC

The inclusive production at the LHC of a charged light hadron and of a jet, featuring a wide separation in rapidity, is suggested as a new probe process for the investigation of the BFKL mechanism of resummation of energy logarithms in the QCD perturbative series. We present some predictions, tailored on the CMS and CASTOR acceptances, for the cross section averaged over the azimuthal angle between the identified jet and hadron and for azimuthal correlations.

$ρ$-meson leptoproduction as testfield for the unintegrated gluon distribution in the proton

The gluon content of the proton is embodied by the unintegrated gluon distribution (UGD), which has universal validity. In literature many models of UGD have been proposed so far. The polarized $ρ$-meson leptoproduction at HERA offers a nowadays unexplored testfield to discriminate among existing models of UGD, via the comparison with theoretical predictions formulated in the $κ$-factorization approach.

High-energy resummation in heavy-quark pair photoproduction

We present our predictions for the inclusive production of two heavy quark-antiquark pairs, separated by a large rapidity interval, in the collision of (quasi-)real photons at the energies of LEP2 and of some future electron-positron colliders. We include in our calculation the full resummation of leading logarithms in the center-of-mass energy and a partial resummation of the next-to-leading logarithms, within the Balitsky-Fadin-Kuraev-Lipatov (BFKL) approach.

Inclusive dihadron production at the LHC in NLA BFKL

A study of cross sections and azimuthal correlation moments for the inclusive production of two, light charged hadrons featuring large transverse momenta and well separated in rapidity at LHC energies, including BFKL resummation effects with NLA accuracy, is presented. This reaction shares the same theoretical setup with the well konwn Mueller-Navelet jet production and can be thought of as a new and complementary channel to access the BFKL dynamics at proton colliders.

BFKL phenomenology: resummation of high-energy logs in semi-hard processes at LHC

A study of differential cross sections and azimuthal observables for semi-hard processes at LHC energies, including BFKL resummation effects, is presented. Particular attention has been paid to the behaviour of the azimuthal correlation momenta, when a couple of forward/backward jets or identified hadrons is produced in the final state with a large rapidity separation. Three- and four- jet production has been also considered, the main focus lying on the definition of new, generalized azimuthal observables, whose dependence on the transverse momenta and the rapidities of the central jet(s) can be considered as a distinct signal of the onset of BFKL dynamics.

High-energy resummation in semi-hard processes at the LHC

Semi-hard processes in the large COM energy limit offer us an exclusive chance to test the dynamics behind strong interactions in kinematical sectors so far unexplored. In the Regge limit, fixed-order calculations in pQCD based on collinear factorisation miss the effect of large energy logs, which are so large to compensate the small QCD coupling $α_s$ and must therefore be accounted for to all perturbative orders.. The BFKL approach represents the most powerful tool to resum to all orders these large logs both in the LLA and in the NLA. The inclusive hadroproduction of forward jets with high transverse momenta separated by a large rapidity interval at the LHC (Mueller--Navelet jets) has been one of the most studied reactions so far. Interesting observables associated to this process are the azimuthal correlations, showing a very good agreement with experimental data at the LHC. However, new BFKL-sensitive observables should be considered in the context of the LHC physics program. With the aim the to further and deeply probe the dynamics of QCD in the Regge limit, we give phenomenological predictions for four distinct semi-hard process. On one hand, we continue the analysis of reactions with two objects identified in the final state $(i)$ by addressing open problems in the Mueller--Navelet sector and $(ii)$ by studying the inclusive dihadron production in the full NLA BKFL accuracy. On the other hand, we show how inclusive multi-jet production processes allow us to define new, generalised and suitable BFKL observables, where transverse momenta and rapidities of the tagged jets, well separated in rapidity from each other, appear in new combinations. We give the first predictions for the inclusive three-jet production, encoding the effects of higher-order BFKL corrections. Then, making use of the same formalism, we present the first complete BFKL analysis for the four-jet production.

Dihadron production at the LHC: full next-to-leading BFKL calculation

The study of the inclusive production of a pair of charged light hadrons (a "dihadron" system) featuring high transverse momenta and well separated in rapidity represents a clear channel for the test of the BFKL dynamics at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). This process has much in common with the well known Mueller-Navelet jet production; however, hadrons can be detected at much smaller values of the transverse momentum than jets, thus allowing to explore an additional kinematic range, supplementary to the one studied with Mueller-Navelet jets. Furthermore, it makes it possible to constrain not only the parton densities (PDFs) for the initial proton, but also the parton fragmentation functions (FFs) describing the detected hadron in the final state. Here, we present the first full NLA BFKL analysis for cross sections and azimuthal angle correlations for dihadrons produced in the LHC kinematic ranges. We make use of the Brodsky-Lapage-Mackenzie (BLM) optimization method to set the values of the renormalization scale and study the effect of choosing different values for the factorization scale. We also gauge the uncertainty coming from the use of different PDF and FF parametrizations.
