Equilibrium statistical mechanics of bipartite spin systems

Aim of this paper is to give an extensive treatment of bipartite mean field spin systems, ordered and disordered: at first, bipartite ferromagnets are investigated, achieving an explicit expression for the free energy trough a new minimax variational principle. Furthermore via the Hamilton-Jacobi technique the same free energy structure is obtained together with the existence of its thermodynamic limit and the minimax principle is connected to a standard max one. The same is investigated for bipartite spin-glasses: By the Borel-Cantelli lemma a control of the high temperature regime is obtained, while via the double stochastic stability technique we get also the explicit expression of the free energy at the replica symmetric level, uniquely defined by a minimax variational principle again. A general results that states that the free energies of these systems are convex linear combinations of their independent one party model counterparts is achieved too. For the sake of completeness we show further that at zero temperature the replica symmetric entropy becomes negative and, consequently, such a symmetry must be broken. The treatment of the fully broken replica symmetry case is deferred to a forthcoming paper. As a first step in this direction, we start deriving the linear and quadratic constraints to overlap fluctuations.

Replica symmetry breaking in mean field spin glasses trough Hamilton-Jacobi technique

During the last years, through the combined effort of the insight, coming from physical intuition and computer simulation, and the exploitation of rigorous mathematical methods, the main features of the mean field Sherrington-Kirkpatrick spin glass model have been firmly established. In particular, it has been possible to prove the existence and uniqueness of the infinite volume limit for the free energy, and its Parisi expression, in terms of a variational principle, involving a functional order parameter. Even the expected property of ultrametricity, for the infinite volume states, seems to be near to a complete proof. The main structural feature of this model, and related models, is the deep phenomenon of spontaneous replica symmetry breaking (RSB), discovered by Parisi many years ago. By expanding on our previous work, the aim of this paper is to investigate a general frame, where replica symmetry breaking is embedded in a kind of mechanical scheme of the Hamilton-Jacobi type. Here, the analog of the "time" variable is a parameter characterizing the strength of the interaction, while the "space" variables rule out quantitatively the broken replica symmetry pattern. Starting from the simple cases, where annealing is assumed, or replica symmetry, we build up a progression of dynamical systems, with an increasing number of space variables, which allow to weaken the effect of the potential in the Hamilton-Jacobi equation, as the level of symmetry braking is increased. This new machinery allows to work out mechanically the general K-step RSB solutions, in a different interpretation with respect to the replica trick, and lightens easily their properties as existence or uniqueness.

About the ergodic regime in the analogical Hopfield neural networks. Moments of the partition function

In this paper we introduce and exploit the real replica approach for a minimal generalization of the Hopfield model, by assuming the learned patterns to be distributed accordingly to a standard unit Gaussian. We consider the high storage case, when the number of patterns is linearly diverging with the number of neurons. We study the infinite volume behavior of the normalized momenta of the partition function. We find a region in the parameter space where the free energy density in the infinite volume limit is self-averaging around its annealed approximation, as well as the entropy and the internal energy density. Moreover, we evaluate the corrections to their extensive counterparts with respect to their annealed expressions. The fluctuations of properly introduced overlaps, which act as order parameters, are also discussed.

Constraints for the order parameters in analogical neural networks

In this paper we study, via equilibrium statistical mechanics, the properties of the internal energy of an Hopfield neural network whose patterns are stored continuously (Gaussian distributed). The model is shown to be equivalent to a bipartite spin glass in which one party is given by dichotomic neurons and the other party by Gaussian spin variables. Dealing with replicated systems, beyond the Mattis magnetization, we introduce two overlaps, one for each party, as order parameters of the theory: The first is a standard overlap among neural configurations on different replicas, the second is an overlap among the Gaussian spins of different replicas. The aim of this work is to show the existence of constraints for these order parameters close to ones found in many other complex systems as spin glasses and diluted networks: we find a class of Ghirlanda-Guerra-like identities for both the overlaps, generalizing the well known constraints to the neural networks, as well as new identities where noise is involved explicitly.

The replica symmetric behavior of the analogical neural network

In this paper we continue our investigation of the analogical neural network, paying interest to its replica symmetric behavior in the absence of external fields of any type. Bridging the neural network to a bipartite spin-glass, we introduce and apply a new interpolation scheme to its free energy that naturally extends the interpolation via cavity fields or stochastic perturbations to these models. As a result we obtain the free energy of the system as a sum rule, which, at least at the replica symmetric level, can be solved exactly. As a next step we study its related self-consistent equations for the order parameters and their rescaled fluctuations, found to diverge on the same critical line of the standard Amit-Gutfreund-Sompolinsky theory.

Mean field dilute ferromagnet I. High temperature and zero temperature behavior

We study the mean field dilute model of a ferromagnet. We find and prove an expression for the free energy density at high temperature, and at temperature zero. We find the critical line of the model, separating the phase with zero magnetization from the phase with symmetry breaking. We also compute exactly the entropy at temperature zero, which is strictly positive. The physical behavior at temperature zero is very interesting and related to infinite dimensional percolation, and suggests possible behaviors at generic low temperatures. Lastly, we provide a complete solution for the annealed model. Our results hold both for the Poisson and the Bernoulli versions of the model.

The replica symmetric region in the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick mean field spin glass model. The Almeida-Thouless line

In previous work, we have developed a simple method to study the behavior of the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick mean field spin glass model for high temperatures, or equivalently for high external fields. The basic idea was to couple two different replicas with a quadratic term, trying to push out the two replica overlap from its replica symmetric value. In the case of zero external field, our results reproduced the well known validity of the annealed approximation, up to the known critical value for the temperature. In the case of nontrivial external field, our method could prove the validity of the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick replica symmetric solution up to a line, which fell short of the Almeida-Thouless line, associated to the onset of the spontaneous replica symmetry breaking, in the Parisi Ansatz. Here, we make a strategic improvement of the method, by modifying the flow equations, with respect to the parameters of the model. We exploit also previous results on the overlap fluctuations in the replica symmetric region. As a result, we give a simple proof that replica symmetry holds up to the critical Almeida-Thouless line, as expected on physical grounds. Our results are compared with the characterization of the replica symmetry breaking line previously given by Talagrand. We outline also a possible extension of our methods to the broken replica symmetry region.

A forgotten publication of Ettore Majorana on the improvement of the Thomas-Fermi statistical model

Ettore Majorana proposed an important improvement to the Thomas-Fermi statistical model for atoms, with a communication at the general meeting of the Italian Physical Society, held in Rome, on December 29th, 1928, regularly published on Nuovo Cimento. This communication did not receive any mention, neither in the numerous publications of Fermi and his associates on the subject, nor in the further reconstructions of the life and activity of Ettore Majorana. The Majorana proposal was not accepted by Enrico Fermi for years, and forgotten. However, it was finally exploited, without reference, in the 1934 conclusive paper by Fermi and Amaldi on the statistical model for atoms. We analyze the improved model proposed by Majorana, with the help of unpublished notes, kept in the Majorana Archives in Pisa. Moreover, we trace the path leading Fermi to the eventual late acceptance of Majorana improvement, also with the help of the material in Fermi Archives in Pisa. The conclusion is that Ettore Majorana played an effective leadership in Rome for the very conceptual formulation of the statistical model for atoms.

Spin Glasses

This is a short review about recent methods and results, mostly for mean field spin glasses, based on interpolation and comparison schemes. In particular, the Parisi spontaneous replica symmetry breaking phenomenon is described in the frame of extended variational principles, Derrida-Ruelle probability cascades, and overlap locking.

The Ising-Sherrington-Kirpatrick model in a magnetic field at high temperature

We study a spin system on a large box with both Ising interaction and Sherrington-Kirpatrick couplings, in the presence of an external field. Our results are: (i) existence of the pressure in the limit of an infinite box. When both Ising and Sherrington-Kirpatrick temperatures are high enough, we prove that: (ii) the value of the pressure is given by a suitable replica symmetric solution, and (iii) the fluctuations of the pressure are of order of the inverse of the square of the volume with a normal distribution in the limit. In this regime, the pressure can be expressed in terms of random field Ising models.

About the cavity fields in mean field spin glass models

We give the explicit expression of the infinite volume limit for the random overlap structures appearing in the mean field spin glass model. These structures have the expected factorization property for the cavity fields, and enjoy invariance with respect to a large class of random transformations. These properties are typical of the Parisi Ansatz.

The high temperature region of the Viana-Bray diluted spin glass model

In this paper, we study the high temperature or low connectivity phase of the Viana-Bray model. This is a diluted version of the well known Sherrington-Kirkpatrick mean field spin glass. In the whole replica symmetric region, we obtain a complete control of the system, proving annealing for the infinite volume free energy, and a central limit theorem for the suitably rescaled fluctuations of the multi-overlaps. Moreover, we show that free energy fluctuations, on the scale 1/N, converge in the infinite volume limit to a non-Gaussian random variable, whose variance diverges at the boundary of the replica-symmetric region. The connection with the fully connected Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model is discussed.

The infinite volume limit in generalized mean field disordered models

We generalize the strategy, we recently introduced to prove the existence of the thermodynamic limit for the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick and p-spin models, to a wider class of mean field spin glass systems, including models with multi-component and non-Ising type spins, mean field spin glasses with an additional Curie-Weiss interaction, and systems consisting of several replicas of the spin glass model, where replicas are coupled with terms depending on the mutual overlaps.

Central limit theorem for fluctuations in the high temperature region of the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick spin glass model

In a region above the Almeida-Thouless line, where we are able to control the thermodynamic limit of the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model and to prove replica symmetry, we show that the fluctuations of the overlaps and of the free energy are Gaussian, on the scale N^{-1/2}, for N large. The method we employ is based on the idea, we recently developed, of introducing quadratic coupling between two replicas. The proof makes use of the cavity equations and of concentration of measure inequalities for the free energy.

Broken Replica Symmetry Bounds in the Mean Field Spin Glass Model

By using a simple interpolation argument, in previous work we have proven the existence of the thermodynamic limit, for mean field disordered models, including the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model, and the Derrida p-spin model. Here we extend this argument in order to compare the limiting free energy with the expression given by the Parisi Ansatz, and including full spontaneous replica symmetry breaking. Our main result is that the quenched average of the free energy is bounded from below by the value given in the Parisi Ansatz uniformly in the size of the system. Moreover, the difference between the two expressions is given in the form of a sum rule, extending our previous work on the comparison between the true free energy and its replica symmetric Sherrington-Kirkpatrick approximation. We give also a variational bound for the infinite volume limit of the ground state energy per site.

The Thermodynamic Limit in Mean Field Spin Glass Models

We present a simple strategy in order to show the existence and uniqueness of the infinite volume limit of thermodynamic quantities, for a large class of mean field disordered models, as for example the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model, and the Derrida p-spin model. The main argument is based on a smooth interpolation between a large system, made of N spin sites, and two similar but independent subsystems, made of N_1 and N_2 sites, respectively, with N_1+N_2=N. The quenched average of the free energy turns out to be subadditive with respect to the size of the system. This gives immediately convergence of the free energy per site, in the infinite volume limit. Moreover, a simple argument, based on concentration of measure, gives the almost sure convergence, with respect to the external noise. Similar results hold also for the ground state energy per site.
