On the propagation of transient waves in a viscoelastic Bessel medium

In this paper we discuss the uniaxial propagation of transient waves within a semi-infinite viscoelastic Bessel medium. First, we provide the analytic expression for the response function of the material as we approach the wave-front. To do so, we take profit of a revisited version of the so called Buchen-Mainardi algorithm. Secondly, we provide an analytic expression for the long time behavior of the response function of the material. This result is obtained by means of the Tauberian theorems for the Laplace transform. Finally, we relate the obtained results to a peculiar model for fluid-filled elastic tubes.

Time Fractional Cable Equation And Applications in Neurophysiology

We propose an extension of the cable equation by introducing a Caputo time fractional derivative. The fundamental solutions of the most common boundary problems are derived analitically via Laplace Transform, and result be written in terms of known special functions. This generalization could be useful to describe anomalous diffusion phenomena with leakage as signal conduction in spiny dendrites. The presented solutions are computed in Matlab and plotted.

Models of dielectric relaxation based on completely monotone functions

The relaxation properties of dielectric materials are described, in the frequency domain, according to one of the several models proposed over the years: Kohlrausch-Williams-Watts, Cole-Cole, Cole-Davidson, Havriliak-Negami (with its modified version) and Excess wing model are among the most famous. Their description in the time domain involves some mathematical functions whose knowledge is of fundamental importance for a full understanding of the models. In this work, we survey the main dielectric models and we illustrate the corresponding time-domain functions. In particular, we stress the attention on the completely monotone character of the relaxation and response functions. We also provide a characterization of the models in terms of differential operators of fractional order.

A generalization of the Lomnitz logarithmic creep law via Hadamard fractional calculus

We present a new approach based on linear integro-differential operators with logarithmic kernel related to the Hadamard fractional calculus in order to generalize, by a parameter $ν\in (0,1]$, the logarithmic creep law known in rheology as Lomnitz law (obtained for $ν=1$). We derive the constitutive stress-strain relation of this generalized model in a form that couples memory effects and time-varying viscosity. Then, based on the hereditary theory of linear viscoelasticity, we also derive the corresponding relaxation function by solving numerically a Volterra integral equation of the second kind. So doing we provide a full characterization of the new model both in creep and in relaxation representation, where the slow varying functions of logarithmic type play a fundamental role as required in processes of ultra slow kinetics.

Wave Dispersion in the Linearised Fractional Korteweg - de Vries equation

In this paper we discuss some properties of linear fractional dispersive waves. In particular, we compare the dispersion relations emerging from the kinematic wave equation and from the linearised Korteweg - de Vries equation with the corresponding time-fractionalized versions. For this purpose, we evaluate the expressions for the phase velocity and for the group velocity, highlighting the differences not only analytically, but also by means of illuminating plots.

Fractional Cable Model for Signal Conduction in Spiny Neuronal Dendrites

The cable model is widely used in several fields of science to describe the propagation of signals. A relevant medical and biological example is the anomalous subdiffusion in spiny neuronal dendrites observed in several studies of the last decade. Anomalous subdiffusion can be modelled in several ways introducing some fractional component into the classical cable model. The Chauchy problem associated to these kind of models has been investigated by many authors, but up to our knowledge an explicit solution for the signalling problem has not yet been published. Here we propose how this solution can be derived applying the generalized convolution theorem (known as Efros theorem) for Laplace transforms. The fractional cable model considered in this paper is defined by replacing the first order time derivative with a fractional derivative of order $α\in(0,1)$ of Caputo type. The signalling problem is solved for any input function applied to the accessible end of a semi-infinite cable, which satisfies the requirements of the Efros theorem. The solutions corresponding to the simple cases of impulsive and step inputs are explicitly calculated in integral form containing Wright functions. Thanks to the variability of the parameter $α$, the corresponding solutions are expected to adapt to the qualitative behaviour of the membrane potential observed in experiments better than in the standard case $α=1$.

A one parameter class of Fractional Maxwell-like models

In this paper we discuss a one parameter modification of the well known fractional Maxwell model of viscoelasticity. Such models appear to be particularly interesting because they describe the short time asymptotic limit of a more general class of viscoelastic models known in the literature as Bessel models.

On complete monotonicity of the Prabhakar function and non-Debye relaxation in dielectrics

The three parameters Mittag--Leffler function (often referred as the Prabhakar function) has important applications, mainly in physics of dielectrics, in describing anomalous relaxation of non--Debye type. This paper concerns with the investigation of the conditions, on the characteristic parameters, under which the function is locally integrable and completely monotonic; these properties are essential for the physical feasibility of the corresponding models. In particular the classical Havriliak--Negami model is extended to a wider range of the parameters. The problem of the numerical evaluation of the three parameters Mittag--Leffler function is also addressed and three different approaches are discussed and compared. Numerical simulations are hence used to validate the theoretical findings and present some graphs of the function under investigation.

On Volterra functions and Ramanujan integrals

Volterra functions were introduced at the beginning of the twentieth century as solutions of some integral equations of convolution type with logarithmic kernel. Since then, few authors have studied this family of functions and faced with the problem of providing a clear understanding of their asymptotic behaviour for small and large arguments. This paper reviews some of the most important results on Volterra functions and in particular collects, into a quite general framework, several results on their asymptotic expansions, these results turn out to be useful not only for the full understanding of the behaviour of the Volterra functions but also for their numerical computation. The connections with integrals of Ramanujan type, which have several important applications, are also discussed.

Cauchy and signaling problems for the time-fractional diffusion-wave equation

In this paper, some known and novel properties of the Cauchy and signaling problems for the one-dimensional time-fractional diffusion-wave equation with the Caputo fractional derivative of order $β,\ 1 \le β\le 2$ are investigated. In particular, their response to a localized disturbance of the initial data is studied. It is known that whereas the diffusion equation describes a process where the disturbance spreads infinitely fast, the propagation velocity of the disturbance is a constant for the wave equation. We show that the time-fractional diffusion-wave equation interpolates between these two different responses in the sense that the propagation velocities of the maximum points, centers of gravity, and medians of the fundamental solutions to both the Cauchy and the signaling problems are all finite. On the other hand, the disturbance spreads infinitely fast and the time-fractional diffusion-wave equation is non-relativistic like the classical diffusion equation. In this paper, the maximum locations, the centers of gravity, and the medians of the fundamental solution to the Cauchy and signaling problems and their propagation velocities are described analytically and calculated numerically. The obtained results for the Cauchy and the signaling problems are interpreted and compared to each other.

On infinite series concerning zeros of Bessel functions of the first kind

A relevant result independently obtained by Rayleigh and Sneddon on an identity on series involving the zeros of Bessel functions of the first kind is derived by an alternative method based on Laplace transforms. Our method leads to a Bernstein function of time, expressed by Dirichlet series, that allows us to recover the Rayleigh-Sneddon sum. We also consider another method arriving at the same result based on a relevant formula by Calogero. Moreover, we also provide an electrical example in which this sum results to be extremely useful in order to recover the analytical expression for the response of the system to a certain external input.

A class of linear viscoelastic models based on Bessel functions

In this paper we investigate a general class of linear viscoelastic models whose creep and relaxation memory functions are expressed in Laplace domain by suitable ratios of modified Bessel functions of contiguous order. In time domain these functions are shown to be expressed by Dirichlet series (that is infinite Prony series). It follows that the corresponding creep compliance and relaxation modulus turn out to be characterized by infinite discrete spectra of retardation and relaxation time respectively. As a matter of fact, we get a class of viscoelastic models depending on a real parameter $ν> -1$. Such models exhibit rheological properties akin to those of a fractional Maxwell model (of order $1/2$) for short times and of a standard Maxwell model for long times.

Propagation Speed of the Maximum of the Fundamental Solution to the Fractional Diffusion-Wave Equation

In this paper, the one-dimensional time-fractional diffusion-wave equation with the fractional derivative of order $1 \le α\le 2$ is revisited. This equation interpolates between the diffusion and the wave equations that behave quite differently regarding their response to a localized disturbance: whereas the diffusion equation describes a process, where a disturbance spreads infinitely fast, the propagation speed of the disturbance is a constant for the wave equation. For the time fractional diffusion-wave equation, the propagation speed of a disturbance is infinite, but its fundamental solution possesses a maximum that disperses with a finite speed. In this paper, the fundamental solution of the Cauchy problem for the time-fractional diffusion-wave equation, its maximum location, maximum value, and other important characteristics are investigated in detail. To illustrate analytical formulas, results of numerical calculations and plots are presented. Numerical algorithms and programs used to produce plots are discussed.

On the fractional Poisson process and the discretized stable subordinator

The fractional Poisson process and the Wright process (as discretization of the stable subordinator) along with their diffusion limits play eminent roles in theory and simulation of fractional diffusion processes. Here we have analyzed these two processes, concretely the corresponding counting number and Erlang processes, the latter being the processes inverse to the former. Furthermore we have obtained the diffusion limits of all these processes by well-scaled refinement of waiting times and jumps

A dynamic viscoelastic analogy for fluid-filled elastic tubes

In this paper we evaluate the dynamic effects of the fluid viscosity for fluid filled elastic tubes in the framework of a linear uni-axial theory. Because of the linear approximation, the effects on the fluid inside the elastic tube are taken into account according to the Womersley theory for a pulsatile flow in a rigid tube. The evolution equations for the response variables are derived by means of the Laplace transform technique and they all turn out to be very same integro-differential equation of the convolution type. This equation has the same structure as the one describing uni-axial waves in linear viscoelastic solids characterized by a relaxation modulus or by a creep compliance. In our case, the analogy is connected with a peculiar viscoelastic solid which exhibits creep properties similar to those of a fractional Maxwell model (of order 1/2) for short times, and of a standard Maxwell model for long times. The present analysis could find applications in biophysics concerning the propagation of pressure waves within large arteries.

On some properties of the Mittag-Leffler function $E_α(-t^α)$, completely monotone for $t > 0$ with $0 < α< 1$

We analyse some peculiar properties of the function of the Mittag-Leffler (M-L) type, $e_α(t):= E_α(-t^α)$ for $0 <α< 1$ and $t > 0$, which is known to be completely monotone (CM) with a non negative spectrum of frequencies and times, suitable to model fractional relaxation processes. We first note that these two spectra coincide so providing a universal scaling property of this function. Furthermore, we consider the problem of approximating our M-L function with simpler CM functions for small and large times. We provide two different sets of elementary CM functions that are asymptotically equivalent to $e_α(t)$ as $t \to 0$ and $t \to \infty$.

Models based on Mittag-Leffler functions for anomalous relaxation in dielectrics

We revisit the Mittag-Leffler functions of a real variable $t$, with one, two and three order-parameters $\{α, β, γ\}$, as far as their Laplace transform pairs and complete monotonicty properties are concerned. These functions, subjected to the requirement to be completely monotone for $t>0$, are shown to be suitable models for non--Debye relaxation phenomena in dielectrics including as particular cases the classical models referred to as Cole-Cole, Davidson-Cole and Havriliak-Negami. We show 3D plots of the response functions and of the corresponding spectral distributions, keeping fixed one of the three order-parameters.
