Conformal Chiral Dynamics

We investigate the chiral dynamics of gauge theories developing an infrared stable fixed point. We determine the dependence of the bilinear fermion condensate on the underlying fermion mass and its anomalous dimension. We introduce the instanton contributions and investigate how they affect the dynamics near the fixed point. We generalize the Gell-Mann Oakes Renner relation and suggest to use it to uncover the presence of an infrared fixed point of the underlying gauge theory. Our results have an immediate impact on the construction of sensible extensions of the Standard Model of particle interactions and the general understanding of the phase diagram of strongly coupled theories.

Technicolor Dark Matter

Dark Matter candidates are natural in Technicolor theories. We introduce a general framework allowing to predict signals of Technicolor Dark Matter at colliders and set constraints from earth based experiments such as CDMS and XENON. We show that the associate production of the composite Higgs can lead to relevant signals at the Large Hadron Collider.

Dynamical Electroweak Symmetry Breaking at the LHC on Supercomputers and in the Sky (Asymmetric Dark Matter)

I briefly review the basic challenges and virtues of models breaking the electroweak symmetry dynamically. I will then introduce the (ultra) minimal walking technicolor models whose construction has been made possible thanks to recent progress in the understanding of the phase diagram for strongly coupled theories as function of number of flavors, colors and matter representation. I will mention possible relevant collider signatures. Interestingly, asymmetric Dark Matter is a natural possibility in our models providing interesting candidates for decaying Dark Matter models which have been explored to account for the PAMELA and ATIC excesses in electron/positron cosmic rays.

Unitarity in Technicolor

We investigate the longitudinal $WW$ scattering in models of dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking featuring a spin one axial and vector state and a composite Higgs. We also investigate the effects of a composite spin two state which has the same properties of a massive graviton. Any model of dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking will feature, depending on the dynamics, some or all these basic resonances as part of the low energy spectrum. We suggest how to take limits in the effective Lagrangian parameter space to reproduce the dynamics of different types of underlying gauge theories, from the traditional Technicolor models to the newest ones featuring nearly conformal dynamics. We study the direct effects of a light composite Higgs and the indirect ones stemming from the presence of a light axial resonance on the longitudinal $WW$ scattering.

Decaying Dark Matter can explain the electron/positron excesses

PAMELA and ATIC recently reported excesses in e+ e- cosmic rays. Since the interpretation in terms of DM annihilations was found to be not easily compatible with constraints from photon observations, we consider the DM decay hypothesis and find that it can explain the e+ e- excesses compatibly with all constraints, and can be tested by dedicated HESS observations of the Galactic Ridge. ATIC data indicate a DM mass of about 2 TeV: this mass naturally implies the observed DM abundance relative to ordinary matter if DM is a quasi-stable composite particle with a baryon-like matter asymmetry. Technicolor naturally yields these type of candidates.

Phase diagram of SU(2) with 2 flavors of dynamical adjoint quarks

We report on numerical simulations of SU(2) lattice gauge theory with two flavors of light dynamical quarks in the adjoint of the gauge group. The dynamics of this theory is thought to be very different from QCD -- the theory exhibiting conformal or near conformal behavior in the infrared. We make a high resolution survey of the phase diagram of this model in the plane of the bare coupling and quark mass on lattices of size 8^3 \times 16. Our simulations reveal a line of first order phase transitions extending from beta=0 to beta=beta_c \sim 2.0. For beta > beta_c the phase boundary is no longer first order but continues as the locus of minimum meson mass. For beta > 2.0 we observe the pion and rho masses along the phase boundary to be light, independent of bare coupling and approximately degenerate. We discuss possible interpretations of these observations and corresponding continuum limits.

Unparticle & Higgs as Composites

We propose a generic framework in which the Higgs and the unparticle are both composite. The underlying theories are four dimensional, asymptotically free, nonsupersymmetric gauge theories with fermionic matter. We sketch a possible uni- fication of these two sectors at a much higher scale resembling extended technicolor models. By construction our extensions are natural, meaning that there is no hierar- chy problem. The coupling of the unparticle sector to the composite Higgs emerges as a four-fermion operator. The bilinear unparticle operator near the electroweak scale has scaling dimension in the range 1 < dU < 3. We investigate, in various ways, the breaking of scale invariance induced by the electroweak scale resulting in an unparticle condensate. The latter acts as a natural infrared cut off or hadronic scale. We give the low-energy effective theory valid near the electroweak scale. The unparticle Higgs mixing is found to be suppressed within our framework.

Ultra Minimal Technicolor and its Dark Matter TIMP

We introduce an explicit model with technifermion matter transforming according to multiple representations of the underlying technicolor gauge group. The model features simultaneously the smallest possible value of the naive S parameter and the smallest possible number of technifermions. The chiral dynamics is extremely rich. We construct the low-energy effective Lagrangian. We provide both the linearly and non-linearly realized ones. We then embed, in a natural way, the Standard Model (SM) interactions within the global symmetries of the underlying gauge theory. Several low-energy composite particles are SM singlets. One of these Technicolor Interacting Massive Particles (TIMP)s is a natural cold dark matter (DM) candidate. We estimate the fraction of the mass in the universe constituted by our DM candidate over the baryon one. We show that the new TIMP, differently from earlier models, can be sufficiently light to be directly produced and studied at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC).

The Electroweak Phase Transition in Nearly Conformal Technicolor

We examine the temperature-dependent electroweak phase transition in extensions of the Standard Model in which the electroweak symmetry is spontaneously broken via strongly coupled, nearly-conformal dynamics. In particular, we focus on the low energy effective theory used to describe Minimal Walking Technicolor at the phase transition. Using the one-loop effective potential with ring improvement, we identify significant regions of parameter space which yield a sufficiently strong first order transition for electroweak baryogenesis. The composite particle spectrum corresponding to these regions can be produced and studied at the Large Hadron Collider experiment. We note the possible emergence of a second phase transition at lower temperatures. This occurs when the underlying technicolor theory possesses a nontrivial center symmetry.

(Near) Conformal Technicolor: What is really new?

The knowledge of the phase diagram of strongly coupled theories as function of the number of colors, flavors and matter representation plays a fundamental role when constructing viable extensions of the standard model (SM) featuring dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking. Here I summarize the state-of-the-art of the phase diagram for SU(N) gauge theories with fermionic matter transforming according to arbitrary representations of the underlying gauge group. I critically report on the latest results from first principle lattice simulations and then review the principal models of (near) conformal technicolor such as (Next) Minimal Walking Technicolor (MWT) and Partially Gauged Technicolor (PGT). I finally show that the incarnation of the conformal technicolor model is nothing but the simplest PGT model.

Dynamical Stabilization of the Fermi Scale: Phase Diagram of Strongly Coupled Theories for (Minimal) Walking Technicolor and Unparticles

We summarize basic features associated to dynamical breaking of the electroweak symmetry. The knowledge of the phase diagram of strongly coupled theories as function of the number of colors, flavors and matter representation plays a fundamental role when trying to construct viable extensions of the standard model (SM). Therefore we will report on the status of the phase diagram for SU(N) gauge theories with fermionic matter transforming according to arbitrary representations of the underlying gauge group. We will discuss how the phase diagram can be used to construct unparticle models. We will then review Minimal Walking Technicolor (MWT) and other extensions, such as partially gauged and split technicolor. MWT is a sufficiently general, symmetry wise, model to be considered as a benchmark for any model aiming at breaking the electroweak symmetry dynamically. The unification of the standard model gauge couplings will be revisited within technicolor extensions of the SM. A number of appendices are added to review some basic methods and to provide useful details. In one of the appendices we will show how to gain information on the spectrum of strongly coupled theories relevant for new extensions of the SM by introducing and using alternative large N limits.

Higher representations on the lattice: perturbative studies

We present analytical results to guide numerical simulations with Wilson fermions in higher representations of the colour group. The ratio of $Λ$ parameters, the additive renormalization of the fermion mass, and the renormalization of fermion bilinears are computed in perturbation theory, including cactus resummation. We recall the chiral Lagrangian for the different patterns of symmetry breaking that can take place with fermions in higher representations, and discuss the possibility of an Aoki phase as the fermion mass is reduced at finite lattice spacing.

WW Scattering in Walking Technicolor

We analyze the WW scattering in scenarios of dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking of walking technicolor type. We show that in these theories there are regions of the parameters space allowed by the electroweak precision data, in which unitarity violation is delayed at tree level up to around 3-4 TeV without the inclusion of any sub-TeV resonances.

Supersymmetry Inspired QCD Beta Function

We propose an all orders beta function for ordinary Yang-Mills theories with or without fermions inspired by the Novikov-Shifman-Vainshtein-Zakharov beta function of N=1 supersymmetric gauge theories. The beta function allows us to bound the conformal window. When restricting to one adjoint Weyl fermion we show how the proposed beta function matches the one of supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. The running of the pure Yang-Mills coupling is computed and the deviation from the two loop result is presented. We then compare the deviation with the one obtained from lattice data also with respect to the two loop running.

Constraining Walking and Custodial Technicolor

We show how to constrain the physical spectrum of walking technicolor models via precision measurements and modified Weinberg sum rules. We also study models possessing a custodial symmetry for the S parameter at the effective Lagrangian level - custodial technicolor - and argue that these models cannot emerge from walking type dynamics. We suggest that it is possible to have a very light spin-one axial vector boson. However, in the walking dynamics the associated vector boson is heavy while it is degenerate with the axial in custodial technicolor.

Conformal Windows of SU(N) Gauge Theories, Higher Dimensional Representations and The Size of The Unparticle World

We present the conformal windows of SU(N) supersymmetric and nonsupersymmetric gauge theories with vector-like matter transforming according to higher irreducible representations of the gauge group. We determine the fraction of asymptotically free theories expected to develop an infrared fixed point and find that it does not depend on the specific choice of the representation. This result is exact in supersymmetric theories while it is an approximate one in the nonsupersymmetric case. The analysis allows us to size the unparticle world related to the existence of underlying gauge theories developing an infrared stable fixed point. We find that exactly 50 % of the asymptotically free theories can develop an infrared fixed point while for the nonsupersymmetric theories it is circa 25 %. When considering multiple representations, only for the nonsupersymmetric case, the conformal regions quickly dominate over the nonconformal ones. For four representations, 70 % of the asymptotically free space is filled by the conformal region. According to our theoretical landscape survey the unparticle physics world occupies a sizable amount of the particle world, at least in theory space, and before mixing it (at the operator level) with the nonconformal one.

Gauge Coupling Unification via A Novel Technicolor Model

We show that the recently proposed minimal walking technicolor theory together with a small modification of the Standard Model fermionic matter content leads to an excellent degree of unification of the gauge couplings. We compare the degree of unification with various time-honored technicolor models and the minimal supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model. We find that, at the one-loop level, the new theory provides a degree of unification higher than any of the other extensions above. The phenomenology of the present model is very rich with various potential dark matter candidates.
