Conformal Window 2.0: The Large $N_f$ Safe Story

We extend the phase diagram of SU(N) gauge-fermion theories as function of number of flavours and colours to the region in which asymptotic freedom is lost. We argue, using large $N_f$ results, for the existence of an ultraviolet interacting fixed point at sufficiently large number of flavours opening up to a second ultraviolet conformal window in the number of flavours vs colours phase diagram. We first review the state-of-the-art for the large $N_f$ beta function and then estimate the lower boundary of the ultraviolet window. The theories belonging to this new region are examples of safe non-abelian quantum electro dynamics, termed here {\it safe QCD}. Therefore, according to Wilson, they are fundamental. An important critical quantity is the fermion mass anomalous dimension at the ultraviolet fixed point that we determine at leading order in $1/N_f$. We discover that its value is comfortably below the bootstrap bound. We also investigate the abelian case and find that at the potential ultraviolet fixed point the related fermion mass anomalous dimension has a singular behaviour suggesting that a more careful investigation of its ultimate fate is needed.

UV and IR Zeros of Gauge Theories at The Four Loop Order and Beyond

We unveil the general features of the phase diagram for any gauge theory with fermions transforming according to distinct representations of the underlying gauge group, at the four-loop order. We classify and analyze the zeros of the perturbative beta function and discover the existence of a rich phase diagram. The anomalous dimension of the fermion masses, at the infrared stable fixed point, are presented. We show that the infrared fixed point, and associated anomalous dimension, are well described by the all-orders beta function for any theory. We also argue the possible existence, to all orders, of a nontrivial ultraviolet fixed point for gauge theories at large number of flavors.

Raising the SUSY-breaking scale in a Goldstone-Higgs model

We show that by combining the elementary-Goldstone-Higgs scenario and supersymmetry it is possible to raise the scale of supersymmetry breaking to several TeVs by relating it to the spontaneous-symmetry-breaking one. This is achieved by first enhancing the global symmetries of the super-Higgs sector to SU(4) and then embedding the electroweak sector and the Standard-Model fermions. We determine the conditions under which the model achieves a vacuum such that the resulting Higgs is a pseudo-Goldstone boson. The main results are: the supersymmetry-breaking scale is identified with the spontaneous-symmetry-breaking scale of SU(4) which is several TeVs above the radiatively induced electroweak scale; intriguingly the global symmetry of the Higgs sector predicts the existence of two super-Higgs multiplets with one mass eigenstate playing the role of the pseudo-Goldstone Higgs; the symmetry-breaking dynamics fixes $\tan β= 1$ and requires a supplementary singlet chiral superfield. We finally discuss the spectrum of the model that now features superpartners of the Standard-Model fermions and gauge bosons in the multi-TeV range.

Asymptotically safe and free chiral theories with and without scalars

We unveil the dynamics of four dimensional chiral gauge-Yukawa theories featuring several scalar degrees of freedom transforming according to distinct representations of the underlying gauge group. We consider generalized Georgi-Glashow and Bars-Yankielowicz theories. We determine, to the maximum known order in perturbation theory, the phase diagram of these theories and further disentangle their ultraviolet asymptotic nature according to whether they are asymptotically free or safe. We therefore extend the number of theories that are known to be fundamental in the Wilsonian sense to the case of chiral gauge theories with scalars.

Ideal Walking Dynamics via a Gauged NJL Model

According to the Ideal Walking Technicolor paradigm large mass anomalous dimensions arise in gauged Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) models when the four-fermion coupling is sufficiently strong to induce spontaneous symmetry breaking in an otherwise conformal gauge theory. We therefore study the $SU(2)$ gauged NJL model with two adjoint fermions using lattice simulations. The model is in an infrared conformal phase at small NJL coupling while it displays a chirally broken phase at large NJL couplings. In the infrared conformal phase we find that the mass anomalous dimension varies with the NJL coupling reaching $γ_m \sim 1$ close to the chiral symmetry breaking transition, de facto making the present model the first explicit realization of the Ideal Walking scenario.

Framework for an asymptotically safe Standard Model via dynamical breaking

We present a consistent embedding of the matter and gauge content of the Standard Model into an underlying asymptotically-safe theory, that has a well-determined in- teracting UV fixed point in the large colour/flavour limit. The scales of symmetry breaking are determined by two mass-squared parameters with the breaking of elec- troweak symmetry being driven radiatively. There are no other free parameters in the theory apart from gauge couplings.

Viscous Conformal Gauge Theories

We present the conformal behavior of the shear viscosity-to-entropy density ratio and the fermion-number diffusion coefficient within the perturbative regime of the conformal window for gauge-fermion theories.

Phase structure of complete asymptotically free SU($N_c$) theories with quarks and scalar quarks

We determine the phase diagram of complete asymptotically free SU($N_c$) gauge theories featuring $N_s$ complex scalars and $N_f$ Dirac quarks transforming according to the fundamental representation of the gauge group. The analysis is performed at the maximum known order in perturbation theory. We unveil a very rich dynamics and associated phase structure. Intriguingly we discover that the complete asymptotically free conditions guarantee that the infrared dynamics displays long distance conformality, and in a regime when perturbation theory is applicable. We conclude our analysis by determining the quantum corrected potential of the theory and summarising the possible patterns of radiative symmetry breaking. These theories are of potential phenomenological interest as either elementary or composite ultraviolet finite extensions of the Standard Model.

Radiative symmetry breaking from interacting UV fixed points

It is shown that the addition of positive mass-squared terms to asymptotically safe gauge-Yukawa theories with perturbative UV fixed points leads to calculable radiative symmetry breaking in the IR. This phenomenon, and the multiplicative running of the operators that lies behind it, is akin to the radiative symmetry breaking that occurs in the Supersymmetric Standard Model.

Inflation and pseudo-Goldstone Higgs boson

We consider inflation within a model framework where the Higgs boson arises as a pseudo-Goldstone boson associated with the breaking of a global symmetry at a scale significantly larger than the electroweak one. We show that in such a model the scalar self-couplings can be parametrically suppressed and, consequently, the non-minimal couplings to gravity can be of order one or less, while the inflationary predictions of the model remain compatible with the precision cosmological observations. Furthermore, in the model we study, the existence of the electroweak scale is entirely due to the inflaton field. Our model therefore suggests that inflation and low energy particle phenomenology may be more entwined than assumed so far.

Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model with Wilson fermions

We present a lattice study of a Nambu Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model using Wilson fermions. Four fermion interactions are a natural part of several extensions of the Standard Model, appearing as a low energy description of a more fundamental theory. In models of dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking they are used to endow the Standard Model fermions with masses. In infrared conformal models these interaction, when sufficiently strong, can alter the dynamics of the fixed point, turning the theory into a (near) conformal model with desirable features for model building. As a first step toward the nonperturbative study of these models, we study the phase space of the ungauged NJL model.

Extending Chiral Perturbation Theory with an Isosinglet Scalar

We augment the chiral Lagrangian by an isosinglet scalar and compute the one-loop radiative corrections to the pion mass and decay constant, as well as the scalar mass. The calculations are carried out for different patterns of chiral symmetry breaking of immediate relevance for phenomenology and lattice investigations. By construction our results encompass several interesting limits, ranging from the dilaton to the linear sigma model.

Composite Higgs Dynamics on the Lattice

We investigate the spectrum of the SU(2) gauge theory with $N_f$ = 2 flavors of fermions in the fundamental representation, in the continuum, using lattice simulations. This model provides a minimal template which has been used for different strongly coupled extensions of the Standard Model ranging from composite (Goldstone) Higgs models to intriguing types of dark matter candidates, such as the SIMPs. Here we will focus on the composite Goldstone Higgs paradigm, for which this model provides a minimal UV complete realization in terms of a new strong sector with fermionic matter. After introducing the relevant Lattice methods used in our simulations, we will discuss our numerical results. We show that this model features a SU(4)/Sp(4) $\sim$ SO(6)/SO(5) flavor symmetry breaking pattern, and estimate the value of its chiral condensate. Finally, we present our results for the mass spectrum of the lightest spin one and zero resonances, analogue to the QCD $ρ$, $a_1$, $σ$, $η'$, $a_0$ resonances, which are relevant for searches of new, exotic resonances at the LHC.

Asymptotically Safe Grand Unification

Phenomenologically appealing supersymmetric grand unified theories have large gauge representations and thus are not asymptotically free. Their ultraviolet validity is limited by the appearance of a Landau pole well before the Planck scale. One could hope that these theories save themselves, before the inclusion of gravity, by generating an interacting ultraviolet fixed point, similar to the one recently discovered in non-supersymmetric gauge-Yukawa theories. Employing a-maximization, a-theorem, unitarity bounds, as well as positivity of other central charges we nonperturbatively rule out this possibility for a broad class of prime candidates of phenomenologically relevant supersymmetric grand unified theories. We also uncover candidates passing these tests, which have either exotic matter or contain one field decoupled from the superpotential. The latter class of theories contains a model with the minimal matter content required by phenomenology.

Anomalous Dimensions of Conformal Baryons

We determine the anomalous dimensions of baryon operators for the three color theory as function of the number of massless flavours within the conformal window to the maximum known order in perturbation theory. We show that the anomalous dimension of the baryon is controllably small, within the $δ$-expansion, for a wide range of number of flavours. We also find that this is always smaller than the anomalous dimension of the fermion mass operator. These findings challenge the partial compositeness paradigm.

Adjoint SU(2) with Four Fermion Interactions

Four fermion interactions appear in many models of Beyond Standard Model physics. In Technicolour and composite Higgs models Standard Model fermion masses can be generated by four fermion terms. They are also expected to modify the dynamics of the new strongly interacting sector. In particular in technicolour models it has been suggested that they can be used to break infrared conformality and produce a walking theory with a large mass anomalous dimension. We study the SU(2) gauge theory with 2 adjoint fermions and a chirally symmetric four fermion term. We demonstrate chiral symmetry breaking at large four fermion coupling and study the phase diagram of the model.

Fundamental partial compositeness

We construct renormalizable Standard Model extensions, valid up to the Planck scale, that give a composite Higgs from a new fundamental strong force acting on fermions and scalars. Yukawa interactions of these particles with Standard Model fermions realize the partial compositeness scenario. Under certain assumptions on the dynamics of the scalars, successful models exist because gauge quantum numbers of Standard Model fermions admit a minimal enough 'square root'. Furthermore, right-handed SM fermions have an SU(2)$_R$-like structure, yielding a custodially-protected composite Higgs. Baryon and lepton numbers arise accidentally. Standard Model fermions acquire mass at tree level, while the Higgs potential and flavor violations are generated by quantum corrections. We further discuss accidental symmetries and other dynamical features stemming from the new strongly interacting scalars. If the same phenomenology can be obtained from models without our elementary scalars, they would reappear as composite states.

Neutrino masses and ordering via multimessenger astronomy

We define the theoretical framework and deduce the conditions under which multi-messenger astronomy can provide useful information about neutrino masses and their ordering. The framework uses time differences between the arrival of neutrinos and the other light messenger, i.e. the graviton, emitted in astrophysical catastrophes. We also provide a preliminary feasibility study elucidating the experimental reach and challenges for planned neutrino detectors such as Hyper-Kamiokande as well as future several megaton detectors. This study shows that future experiments can be useful in testing independently the cosmological bounds on absolute neutrino masses. Concretely the success of such measurements depends crucially on the available rate of astrophysical events and further requires development of high resolution timing besides the advocated need of megaton size detectors.
