Fujita decomposition and Massey product for fibered varieties

Let $f\colon X\to B$ be a semistable fibration where $X$ is a smooth variety of dimension $n\geq 2$ and $B$ is a smooth curve. We give the structure theorem for the local system of the relative $1$-forms and of the relative top forms. This gives a neat interpretation of the second Fujita decomposition of $f_*ω_{X/B}$. We apply our interpretation to show the existence, up to base change, of higher irrational pencils and on the finiteness of the associated monodromy representations under natural Castelnuovo-type hypothesis on local subsystems. Finally we give a criterion to have that $X$ is not of Albanese general type if $B=\mathbb{P}^1$.

On birational trivial families and Adjoint quadrics

Let $π\colon \mathcal{X}\to B$ be a family whose general fiber $X_b$ gives a $(d_1,...,d_a)$ polarisation of a general Abelian variety where $1\leq d_i\leq 2$, $i=1,...,a$ and $a\geq 4$. We show that the fibers are in the same birational class if all the $(m,0)$ forms on $X_b$ are liftable to $(m,0)$ forms on $\mathcal{X}$ where $m=1$ and $m=a-1$. Actually we show general criteria to find families with fibers in the same birational class, which leads together with a famous theorem of Nori to some interesting applications.

Weighted Fano varieties and infinitesimal Torelli problem

We solve the infinitesimal Torelli problem for $3$-dimensional quasi-smooth ${\mathbb{Q}}$-Fano hypersurfaces with at worst terminal singularities. We also find infinite chains of double coverings of increasing dimension which alternatively distribute themselves in examples and counterexamples for the infinitesimal Torelli claim and which share the analogue, and in some cases the same, Hodge-diagram properties as the length $3$ Gushel-Mukai chain of prime smooth Fanos of coindex $3$ and degree $10$.

Trigonal deformations of rank one and Jacobians

In this paper we study the infinitesimal deformations of a trigonal curve that preserve the trigonal series and such that the associate infinitesimal variation of Hodge structure (IVHS) is of rank 1. We show that if the genus g is greater or equal to 8 or g=6,7 and the curve is Maroni general, this locus is zero dimensional. Moreover, we complete a result of Naranjo and Pirola. We show in fact that if the genus g is greater or equal to 6, the hyperelliptic locus is the only 2g-1-dimensional sub-locus Y of the moduli space of curves of genus g, such that for the general element [C] in Y, its Jacobian J(C) is dominated by a hyperelliptic Jacobian of genus g' greater or equal to g.

Generically nef vector bundles on ruled surfaces

The present paper concerns the invariants of generically nef vector bundles on ruled surfaces. By Mehta - Ramanathan Restriction Theorem and by Miyaoka characterization of semistable vector bundles on a curve, the generic nefness can be considered as a weak form of semistability. We establish a Bogomolov type inequality for generically nef vector bundles with nef general fiber restriction on ruled surfaces with no negative section. This gives an affermative answer in this case to a problem posed by Th. Peternell. Concerning ruled surfaces with a negative section, we prove a a similar result for generically nef vector bundles, with nef and balanced general fiber restriction and with a numerical condition on first Chern class, which is satisfied, for instance, if in its class there is a reduced divisor. Finally, we use such results to bound the invariants of curve fibrations, which factorize through finite covers of ruled surfaces.

On the slope of fourgonal semistable fibrations

We bound the slope of sweeping curves in the fourgonal locus of the moduli space of genus g algebraic curves. Our results follow from some Bogomolov-type inequalities for weakly positive rank two vector bundles on ruled surfaces.

On Green's proof of infinitesimal Torelli theorem for hypersurfaces

We prove an equivalence between the infinitesimal Torelli theorem for top forms on a hypersurface contained inside a Grassmannian $\mathbb G$ and the theory of adjoint volume forms presented in L. Rizzi, F. Zucconi, "Generalized adjoint forms on algebraic varieties", Ann. Mat. Pura e Applicata, in press. More precisely, via this theory and a suitable generalization of Macaulay's theorem we show that the differential of the period map vanishes on an infinitesimal deformation if and only if certain explicitly given twisted volume forms go in the generalized Jacobi ideal of $X$ via the cup product homomorphism.

A note on Torelli-type theorems for Gorenstein curves

Using the notion of generalized divisors introduced by Hartshorne, we adapt the theory of adjoint forms to the case of Gorenstein curves. We show an infinitesimal Torelli-type theorem for vector bundles on Gorenstein curves. We also construct explicit counterexamples to the infinitesimal Torelli claim in the case of a reduced reducible Gorenstein curve.

Differential forms and quadrics of the canonical image

Let $π\colon\mathcal{X}\to B$ be a family over a smooth connected analytic variety $B$, not necessarily compact, whose general fiber $X$ is smooth of dimension $n$, with irregularity $\geq n+1$ and such that the image of the canonical map of $X$ is not contained in any quadric of rank $\leq 2n+3$. We prove that if the Albanese map of $X$ is of degree $1$ onto its image then the fibers of $π\colon\mathcal{X}\to B$ are birational under the assumption that all the $1$-forms and all the $n$-forms of a fiber are holomorphically liftable to $\mathcal{X}$. Moreover we show that generic Torelli holds for such a family $π\colon \mathcal{X}\to B$ if, in addition to the above hypothesis, we assume that the fibers are minimal and their minimal model is unique. There are counterexamples to the above statements if the canonical image is contained inside quadrics of rank $\leq 2n+3$. We also solve the infinitesimal Torelli problem for an $n$-dimensional variety $X$ of general type with irregularity $\geq n+1$ and such that its cotangent sheaf is generated and the canonical map is a rational map whose image is not contained in a quadric of rank less or equal to $2n+3$.

Generalized adjoint forms on algebraic varieties

We prove a full generalization of the Castelnuovo's free pencil trick. We show its analogies with the Adjoint Theorem; see L. Rizzi, F. Zucconi, Differential forms and quadrics of the canonical image, arXiv:1409.1826 and also Theorem 1.5.1 in G. P. Pirola, F. Zucconi, Variations of the Albanese morphisms, J. Algebraic Geom. 12 (2003), no. 3, 535-572. Moreover we find a new formulation of the Griffiths's infinitesimal Torelli Theorem for smooth projective hypersurfaces using meromorphic $1$-forms.

Mori dream spaces and birational rigidity of Fano 3-folds

We highlight a relation between the existence of Sarkisov links and the finite generation of (certain) Cox rings. We introduce explicit methods to use this relation in order to prove birational rigidity statements. To illustrate, we complete the birational rigidity results of Okada for Fano complete intersection 3-folds in singular weighted projective spaces.

Circle of Sarkisov links on a Fano $3$-fold

For a general Fano $3$-fold of index $1$ in the weighted projective space $\mathbb{P}(1,1,1,1,2,2,3)$ we construct $2$ new birational models that are Mori fibre spaces, in the framework of the so-called Sarkisov program. We highlight a relation between the corresponding birational maps, as a circle of Sarkisov links, visualising the notion of relations (due to Kaloghiros) in Sarkisov program.

A note on Harris Morrison sweeping families of maximal gonality

Harris and Morrison constructed semistable families f:F \to Y of k-gonal curves of genus g such that for every k the corresponding modular curves give a sweeping family in the k-gonal locus in the moduli space. Their construction depends on the choice of a smooth curve X. We show that if the genus g(X) is sufficiently high with respect to g, then the ratio K_F^2 / χ(O_F) is 8 asymptotically with respect to g(X). We show also that if the gonality is maximal and some conjectured estimates of Harris and Morrison hold, the slope of the fibration f: F\to Y is 12 asymptotically with respect to g and that F is a surface of positive index.

On subcanonical Gorenstein varieties and apolarity

Let $X$ be a codimension 1 subvariety of dimension $>1$ of a variety of minimal degree $Y$. If $X$ is subcanonical with Gorenstein canonical singularities admitting a crepant resolution, then $X$ is Arithmetically Gorenstein and we characterise such subvarieties $X$ of $Y$ via apolarity as those whose apolar hypersurfaces are Fermat.

Gonality, apolarity and hypercubics

We show that any Fermat hypercubic is apolar to a trigonal curve, and vice versa. We show also that the Waring number of the polar hypercubic associated to a tetragonal curve of genus $g$ is at most $\lceil 3/2g - 7/2\rceil$, and for a large class of them is at most $4/3g - 3$.

Fermat hypersurfaces and Subcanonical curves

We extend the classical Enriques-Petri Theorem to $s$-subcanonical projectively normal curves, proving that such a curve is $(s+2)$-gonal if and only if it is contained in a surface of minimal degree. Moreover, we show that any Fermat hypersurface of degree $s+2$ is apolar to an $s$-subcanonical $(s+2)$-gonal projectively normal curve, and vice versa.

On blow-ups of the quintic del Pezzo 3-fold and varieties of power sums of quartic hypersurfaces

We construct new subvarieties in the varieties of power sums for certain quartic hypersurfaces. This provides a generalization of Mukai's description of smooth prime Fano threefolds of genus twelve as the varieties of power sums for plane quartics. In fact, in our second paper, we show that these quartics are exactly the Scorza quartics associated to general pairs of trigonal curves and ineffective theta characteristics and this enables us to prove there the main cojecture of Dolgachev and Kanev.
