Crossroads of the mesoscale circulation

Quantifying the mechanisms of tracer dispersion in the ocean remains a central question in oceanography, for problems ranging from nutrient delivery to phytoplankton, to the early detection of contaminants. Most analyses have been based on Lagrangian concepts of transport, focusing on the identification of features minimizing fluid exchange among regions, or more recently on network tools which focus on connectivity and transport pathways. Neither of these approaches allows ranking the geographical sites of major water passage and selecting them so that they monitor waters coming from separate parts of the ocean. These are instead key criteria when deploying an observing network. Here we address this issue by estimating at any point the extent of the ocean surface which transits through it in a given time window. With such information we are able to rank the sites with major fluxes that intercept waters originating from different regions. We show that this allows us to optimize an observing network, where a set of sampling sites can be chosen for monitoring the largest flux of water dispersing out of a given region. When the analysis is performed backward in time, this method allows us to identify the major sources which feed a target region. The method is first applied to a minimalistic model of a mesoscale eddy field, and then to realistic satellite-derived ocean currents in the Kerguelen area. In this region we identify the optimal location of fixed stations capable of intercepting the trajectories of 43 surface drifters, along with statistics on the temporal persistence of the stations determined in this way. We then identify possible hotspots of micro-nutrient enrichment for the recurrent spring phytoplanktonic bloom occuring here. Promising applications to other fields, such as larval connectivity, marine spatial planning or contaminant detection, are then discussed.

Mixing structures in the Mediterranean Sea from Finite-Size Lyapunov Exponents

We characterize horizontal mixing and transport structures in the surface circulation of the Mediterranean Sea, as obtained from a primitive equation circulation model. We calculate the Finite Size Lyapunov Exponents (FSLEs) of the velocity data set, which gives a direct measure of the local stirring. By proper election of the FSLE parameters, we focus on the mesoscale structures, locating a number of vortices embedded in an intricate network of high-stretching lines. These lines control transport in the system. At the edge of the vortices, a dense tangle of line intersections appears, identifying strong mixing. The spatial distribution of FSLEs, averaged over one year, allows to classify areas in the Mediterranean basin according by their mixing activity. The space average of FSLEs on selected geographical regions gives a measure for quantifying and comparing the mixing seasonal variability.

Noise-induced macroscopic bifurcations in globally-coupled chaotic units

Large populations of globally-coupled identical maps subjected to independent additive noise are shown to undergo qualitative changes as the features of the stochastic process are varied. We show that for strong coupling, the collective dynamics can be described in terms of a few effective macroscopic degrees of freedom, whose deterministic equations of motion are systematically derived through an order parameter expansion.

Solitons on H-bonds in proteins

A model for soliton dynamics on a hydrogen-bond network in helical proteins is proposed. It employs in three dimensions the formalism of fully integrable Toda lattices which admits phonons as well as solitons along the hydrogen-bonds of the helices. A simulation of the three dimensional Toda lattice system shows that the solitons are spontaneously created and are stable and moving along the helix axis. A perturbation on one of the three H-bond lines forms solitons on the other H-bonds as well. The robust solitary wave may explain very long-lived modes in the frequency range of 100 cm$^{-1}$ which are found in recent X-ray laser experiments. The dynamics parameters of the Toda lattice are in accordance with the usual Lennard-Jones parameters used for realistic H-bond potentials in proteins.

Coherent regimes of globally coupled dynamical systems

The paper presents a method by which the mean field dynamics of a population of dynamical systems with parameter diversity and global coupling can be described in terms of a few macroscopic degrees of freedom. The method applies to populations of any size and functional form in the region of coherence. It requires linear variation or a narrow distribution for the dispersed parameter. Although being an approximation, the method allows us to quantitatively study the collective regimes that arise as a result of diversity and coupling and to interpret the transitions among these regimes as bifurcations of the effective macroscopic degrees of freedom. To illustrate, the phenomenon of oscillator death and the route to full locking are examined for chaotic oscillators with time scale mismatch.

Noise-induced macroscopic bifurcations in populations of globally coupled maps

Populations of globally coupled identical maps subject to additive, independent noise are studied in the regimes of strong coupling. Contrary to each noisy population element, the mean field dynamics undergoes qualitative changes when the noise strength is varied. In the limit of infinite population size, these macroscopic bifurcations can be accounted for by a deterministic system, where the mean-field, having the same dynamics of each uncoupled element, is coupled with other order parameters. Different approximation schemes are proposed for polynomial and exponential functions and their validity discussed for logistic and excitable maps.

Dynamics of order parameters for a population of globally coupled oscillators

Using an expansion in order parameters, the equation of motion for the centroid of globally coupled oscillators with natural frequencies taken from a distribution is obtained for the case of high coupling, low dispersion of natural frequencies and any number of oscillators. To the first order, the system can be approximated by a set of four equations, where the centroid is coupled with a second macroscopic variable, which describes the dynamics of the oscillators around their average. This gives rise to collective effects that suggest experiments aimed at measuring the parameters of the population.
