Sarnak's Program for Erdős Sieves. Part I: Topological Dynamics and Light Tails

This paper is the first part of a two-part article where we generalize Sarnak's program to sets where we remove congruence classes modulo some infinite set $\mathcal{B}$ of ideals of an étale $\mathbb{Q}-$algebra $K$, which we denote by Erdős sieves. We define some light tail conditions on a sieve $R$, and show how these are related to the genericity under the Mirsky measure of the set of $R-$free numbers, which are the algebraic integers of $K$ not contained in any of the congruence classes in $R$. We also show that Erdős $\mathcal{B}-$free systems in any étale $\mathbb{Q}-$algebra satisfy these light tail conditions, so our results generalize Sarnak's program to Erdős $\mathcal{B}-$free systems over any étale $\mathbb{Q}-$algebra.

Sarnak's Program for Erdős Sieves. Part II: Measure Systems and Applications

This paper is the second part of a two-part article where we generalize Sarnak's program to sets where we remove congruence classes modulo some infinite set $\mathcal{B}$ of ideals of an étale $\mathbb{Q}-$algebra $K$, which we denote by Erdős sieves. Given a sieve $R$ we define the set $\mathcal{F}_R$ of algebraic integers in $K$ not contained in any of the congruence classes of $R$. We associate to each sieve two measure-theoretical dynamical systems $X_R$ (the orbit closure of $\mathcal{F}_R$) and $Ω_R$ (the set of $R-$admissible sets) and show how they are related. We show that the system associated to $Ω_R$ is isomorphic to an ergodic rotation of a compact abelian group, and compute its spectrum. As applications we show results about infinite sumsets in the integers, investigate the case where $\mathcal{F}_R$ is the squarefree values of some polynomial, and show a prime number theorem for $R-$free numbers.

$\mathfrak{B}$-free integers in number fields and dynamics

In 2010, Sarnak initiated the study of the dynamics of the system determined by the square of the Möbius function (the characteristic function of the square-free integers). We deal with his program in the more general context of $\mathfrak{B}$-free integers in number fields, suggested 5 years later by Baake and Huck. This setting encompasses the classical square-free case and its generalizations. Given a number field $K$, let $\mathfrak{B}$ be a family of pairwise coprime ideals in its ring of integers $\mathcal{O}_K$, such that $\sum_{\mathfrak{b}\in\mathfrak{B}}1/|\mathcal{O}_K / \mathfrak{b}|<\infty$. We study the dynamical system determined by the set $\mathcal{F}_\mathfrak{B}=\mathcal{O}_K\setminus \bigcup_{\mathfrak{b}\in\mathfrak{B}}\mathfrak{b}$ of $\mathfrak{B}$-free integers in $\mathcal{O}_K$. We show that the characteristic function $\mathbb{1}_{\mathcal{F}_\mathfrak{B}}$ of $\mathcal{F}_\mathfrak{B}$ is generic along the natural Følner sequence for a probability measure on $\{0,1\}^{\mathcal{O}_K}$, invariant under the multidimensional shift. The corresponding measure-theoretical dynamical system is proved to be isomorphic to an ergodic rotation on a compact Abelian group. In particular, it is of zero Kolmogorov entropy. Moreover, we provide a description of ``patterns'' appearing in $\mathcal{F}_\mathfrak{B}$ and compute the topological entropy of the orbit closure of $\mathbb{1}_{\mathcal{F}_\mathfrak{B}}$. Finally, we show that this topological dynamical system has a non-trivial topological joining with an ergodic rotation on a compact Abelian group.

Representations of Higman-Thompson groups from Cuntz algebras

Every representation of the Cuntz algebra $\mathcal{O}_n$ leads to a unitary representation of the Higman-Thompson group $V_n$. We consider the family $\{π_x\}_{x\in [0,1[}$ of permutative representations of $\mathcal{O}_n$ that arise from the interval map $f(x)=nx$ (mod 1) acting on the Hilbert space that underlies each orbit, and then study the unitary equivalence and the irreducibility of the corresponding family $\{ρ_x\}_{x\in [0,1[}$ of representations of Higman-Thompson group $V_n$, showing that that these representations are indeed irreducible and moreover $ρ_x$ and $ρ_y$ are equivalent if and only if the orbits of $x$ and $y$ coincide.

Commutativity theorems for groups and semigroups

In this note we prove a selection of commutativity theorems for various classes of semigroups. For instance, if in a separative or completely regular semigroup $S$ we have $x^p y^p = y^p x^p$ and $x^q y^q = y^q x^q$ for all $x,y\in S$ where $p$ and $q$ are relatively prime, then $S$ is commutative. In a separative or inverse semigroup $S$, if there exist three consecutive integers $i$ such that $(xy)^i = x^i y^i$ for all $x,y\in S$, then $S$ is commutative. Finally, if $S$ is a separative or inverse semigroup satisfying $(xy)^3=x^3y^3$ for all $x,y\in S$, and if the cubing map $x\mapsto x^3$ is injective, then $S$ is commutative.
