Chaos in large genus surfaces

Geodesic flows on closed hyperbolic surfaces are a quintessential example of chaotic dynamics, i.e., systems whose long term behavior is very sensitive to initial conditions. The speed of such chaos is controlled by the spectral gap of the Laplace-Beltrami operator of the underlying hyperbolic surface. In this paper we give an overview of recent breakthroughs of Anantharaman and Monk showing that large genus closed hyperbolic surfaces have optimal spectral gap in a probabilistic sense. On the way we introduce and discuss the foundational works of many authors, from Selberg to Mirzakhani, that play a crucial role in the tour de force proof of Anantharaman and Monk.

Heisenberg Translation Flows

We study ergodic theoretical properties of flows on circle bundles over translation surfaces that arise via prequantization, generalizing the theory of Heisenberg nilflows to base surfaces more general than tori; these flows are among the most fundamental examples of parabolic dynamical systems with non-trivial central directions. In particular, we show that such flows are relatively mixing, i.e., they exhibit decay of correlations in the orthogonal complement of functions constant along fibers. We discuss applications of this result to the dynamics of such flows, to the ergodic theory on the corresponding space of wave functions, and, via surface of section constructions, to the study of affine skew products over interval exchange transformations, in the spirit of Furstenberg's classification program for measurable dynamical systems.

The geometry of totally geodesic subvarieties of moduli spaces of Riemann surfaces

We prove a semisimplicity result for the boundary, in the corresponding Deligne-Mumford compactification, of a totally geodesic subvariety of a moduli space of Riemann surfaces. At the level of Teichmüller space, this semisimplicity theorem gives that each component of the boundary is a product of simple factors, each of which behaves metrically like a diagonal embedding. Building on this result, we also show that the associated totally geodesic submanifolds of Teichmüller space and orbifold fundamental groups are hierarchically hyperbolic. The proof intertwines in a novel way results and perspectives originating in dynamics, algebraic geometry, geometric group theory, and both classical and modern Teichmüller theory. It establishes both new rigidity and new flexibility for totally geodesic submanifolds and their associated varieties and orbifold fundamental groups and provides a rich set of new tools for the study of these objects.

Weak mixing in rational billiards

We completely characterize rational polygons whose billiard flow is weakly mixing in almost every direction as those which are not almost integrable, in the terminology of Gutkin, modulo some low complexity exceptions. This proves a longstanding conjecture of Gutkin. This result is derived from a complete characterization of translation surfaces that are weakly mixing in almost every direction: they are those that do not admit an affine factor map to the circle.

From limit theorems to mixing limit theorems

Motivated by work of Dolgopyat and Nándori, we establish a general method for upgrading limit theorems for Birkhoff sums and cocycles over dynamical systems to mixing limit theorems under mild ergodicity and hyperbolicity assumptions. Building on previous work of Al-Saqban and Forni, we apply this method to obtain mixing limit theorems for particular subbundles of the Kontsevich-Zorich cocycle. In forthcoming work of Arana-Herrera and Honaryar these results are applied to study the arithmetic/homological complexity of long simple closed geodesics on negatively curved surfaces.

The distribution of critical graphs of Jenkins-Strebel differentials

By work of Jenkins and Strebel, given a Riemann surface X and a simple closed multi-curve $α$ on it, there exists a unique quadratic differential q on X whose horizontal foliation is measure equivalent to $α$. We study the distribution of the critical graphs of these differentials in the moduli space of metric ribbon graphs as the extremal length of the multi-curves goes to infinity, showing they equidistribute to the Kontsevich measure regardless of the initial choice of X.

The asymmetry of Thurston's earthquake flow

We show that Thurston's earthquake flow is strongly asymmetric in the sense that its normalizer is as small as possible inside the group of orbifold automorphisms of the bundle of measured geodesic laminations over moduli space. (At the level of Teichmüller space, such automorphisms correspond to homeomorphisms that are equivariant with respect to an automorphism of the mapping class group.) It follows that the earthquake flow does not extend to an $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbf{R})$-action of orbifold automorphisms and does not admit continuous renormalization self-symmetries. In particular, it is not conjugate to the Teichmüller horocycle flow via an orbifold map. This contrasts with a number of previous results, most notably Mirzakhani's theorem that the earthquake and Teichmüller horocycle flows are measurably conjugate.

The shapes of complementary subsurfaces to simple closed hyperbolic multi-geodesics

Cutting a hyperbolic surface X along a simple closed multi-geodesic results in a hyperbolic structure on the complementary subsurface. We study the distribution of the shapes of these subsurfaces in moduli space as boundary lengths go to infinity, showing that they equidistribute to the Kontsevich measure on a corresponding moduli space of metric ribbon graphs. In particular, random subsurfaces look like random ribbon graphs, a law which does not depend on the initial choice of X. This result strengthens Mirzakhani's famous simple closed multi-geodesic counting theorems for hyperbolic surfaces.

Effective count of square-tiled surfaces with prescribed real and imaginary foliations in connected components of strata

We prove an effective estimate with a power saving error term for the number of square-tiled surfaces in a connected component of a stratum of quadratic differentials whose vertical and horizontal foliations belong to prescribed mapping class group orbits and which have at most $L$ squares. This result strengthens asymptotic counting formulas in work of Delecroix, Goujard, Zograf, Zorich, and the author.

Counting problems from the viewpoint of ergodic theory: from primitive integer points to simple closed curves

In her thesis, Mirzakhani showed that the number of simple closed geodesics of length $\leq L$ on a closed, connected, oriented hyperbolic surface $X$ of genus $g$ is asymptotic to $L^{6g-6}$ times a constant depending on the geometry of $X$. In this survey we give a detailed account of Mirzakhani's proof of this result aimed at non-experts. We draw inspiration from classic primitive lattice point counting results in homogeneous dynamics. The focus is on understanding how the general principles that drive the proof in the case of lattices also apply in the setting of hyperbolic surfaces.

Bounds on the Hausdorff dimension of Teichmüller horocycle flow orbit closures

We show that the Hausdorff dimension of any proper Teichmüller horocycle flow orbit closure on any $\mathrm{SL}{(2,\mathbf{R})}$-invariant subvariety of Abelian or quadratic differentials is bounded away from the dimension of the subvariety in terms of the polynomial mixing rate of the Teichmüller horocycle flow on the subvariety. The proof is based on abstract methods for measurable flows adapted from work of Bourgain and Katz on sparse ergodic theorems.

Effective mapping class group dynamics III: Counting filling closed curves on surfaces

We prove a quantitative estimate with a power saving error term for the number of filling closed geodesics of a given topological type and length $\leq L$ on an arbitrary closed, orientable, negatively curved surface. More generally, we prove estimates of the same kind for the number of free homotopy classes of filling closed curves of a given topological type on a closed, orientable surface whose geometric intersection number with respect to a given filling geodesic current is $\leq L$. The proofs rely on recent progress made on the study of the effective dynamics of the mapping class group on Teichmüller space and the space of closed curves of a closed, orientable surface, and introduce a novel method for addressing counting problems of mapping class group orbits that naturally yields power saving error terms. This method is also applied to study counting problems of mapping class group orbits of Teichmüller space with respect to Thurston's asymmetric metric.

Effective mapping class group dynamics II: Geometric intersection numbers

We show that the action of the mapping class group on the space of closed curves of a closed surface effectively tracks the corresponding action on Teichmüller space in the following sense: for all but quantitatively few mapping classes, the information of how a mapping class moves a given point of Teichmüller space determines, up to a power saving error term, how it changes the geometric intersection numbers of a given closed curve with respect to arbitrary geodesic currents. Applications include an effective estimate describing the speed of convergence of Teichmüller geodesic rays to the boundary at infinity of Teichmüller space, an effective estimate comparing the Teichmüller and Thurston metrics along mapping class group orbits of Teichmüller space, and, in the sequel, effective estimates for countings of filling closed geodesics on closed, negatively curved surfaces.

Effective mapping class group dynamics I: Counting lattice points in Teichmüller space

We prove a quantitative estimate with a power saving error term for the number of points in a mapping class group orbit of Teichmüller space that lie within a Teichmüller metric ball of given center and large radius. Estimates of the same kind are also proved for sector and bisector counts. These estimates effectivize asymptotic counting results of Athreya, Bufetov, Eskin, and Mirzakhani.

Counting hyperbolic multi-geodesics with respect to the lengths of individual components

Given a connected, oriented, complete, finite area hyperbolic surface $X$ of genus $g$ with $n$ punctures, Mirzakhani showed that the number of multi-geodesics on $X$ of total hyperbolic length $\leq L$ in the mapping class group orbit of a given simple or filling closed multi-curve is asymptotic as $L \to \infty$ to a polynomial in $L$ of degree $6g-6+2n$. We establish asymptotics of the same kind for countings of multi-geodesics in mapping class group orbits of simple or filling closed multi-curves that keep track of the hyperbolic lengths of individual components, proving and generalizing a conjecture of Wolpert. In the simple case we consider more precise countings that also keep track of the class of the multi-geodesics in the space of projective measured geodesic laminations. We provide a unified geometric and topological description of the leading terms of the asymptotics of all the countings considered. Our proofs combine techniques and results from several papers of Mirzakhani as well as ideas introduced by Margulis in his thesis.

Equidistribution of horospheres on moduli spaces of hyperbolic surfaces

Given a simple closed curve $γ$ on a connected, oriented, closed surface $S$ of negative Euler characteristic, Mirzakhani showed that the set of points in the moduli space of hyperbolic structures on $S$ having a simple closed geodesic of length $L$ of the same topological type as $γ$ equidistributes with respect to a natural probability measure as $L \to \infty$. We prove several generalizations of Mirzakhani's result and discuss some of the technical aspects ommited in her original work. The dynamics of the earthquake flow play a fundamental role in the arguments in this paper.

Square-integrability of the Mirzakhani function and statistics of simple closed geodesics on hyperbolic surfaces

Given integers $g,n \geq 0$ satisfying $2-2g-n < 0$, let $\mathcal{M}_{g,n}$ be the moduli space of connected, oriented, complete, finite area hyperbolic surfaces of genus $g$ with $n$ cusps. We study the global behavior of the Mirzakhani function $B \colon \mathcal{M}_{g,n} \to \mathbf{R}_{\geq 0}$ which assigns to $X \in \mathcal{M}_{g,n}$ the Thurston measure of the set of measured geodesic laminations on $X$ of hyperbolic length $\leq 1$. We improve bounds of Mirzakhani describing the behavior of this function near the cusp of $\mathcal{M}_{g,n}$ and deduce that $B$ is square-integrable with respect to the Weil-Petersson volume form. We relate this knowledge of $B$ to statistics of counting problems for simple closed hyperbolic geodesics.

Counting square-tiled surfaces with prescribed real and imaginary foliations and connections to Mirzakhani's asymptotics for simple closed hyperbolic geodesics

We show that the number of square-tiled surfaces of genus $g$, with $n$ marked points, with one or both of its horizontal and vertical foliations belonging to fixed mapping class group orbits, and having at most $L$ squares, is asymptotic to $L^{6g-6+2n}$ times a product of constants appearing in Mirzakhani's count of simple closed hyperbolic geodesics. Many of the results in this paper reflect recent discoveries of Delecroix, Goujard, Zograf, and Zorich, but the approach considered here is very different from theirs. We follow conceptual and geometric methods inspired by Mirzakhani's work.
