Density profiles in the raise and peel model with and without a wall. Physics and combinatorics

We consider the raise and peel model of a one-dimensional fluctuating interface in the presence of an attractive wall. The model can also describe a pair annihilation process in a disordered unquenched media with a source at one end of the system. For the stationary states, several density profiles are studied using Monte Carlo simulations. We point out a deep connection between some profiles seen in the presence of the wall and in its absence. Our results are discussed in the context of conformal invariance ($c = 0$ theory). We discover some unexpected values for the critical exponents, which were obtained using combinatorial methods. We have solved known (Pascal's hexagon) and new (split-hexagon) bilinear recurrence relations. The solutions of these equations are interesting on their own since they give information on certain classes of alternating sign matrices.

Directed abelian algebras and their applications to stochastic models

To each directed acyclic graph (this includes some D-dimensional lattices) one can associate some abelian algebras that we call directed abelian algebras (DAA). On each site of the graph one attaches a generator of the algebra. These algebras depend on several parameters and are semisimple. Using any DAA one can define a family of Hamiltonians which give the continuous time evolution of a stochastic process. The calculation of the spectra and ground state wavefunctions (stationary states probability distributions) is an easy algebraic exercise. If one considers D-dimensional lattices and choose Hamiltonians linear in the generators, in the finite-size scaling the Hamiltonian spectrum is gapless with a critical dynamic exponent $z = D$. One possible application of the DAA is to sandpile models. In the paper we present this application considering one and two dimensional lattices. In the one dimensional case, when the DAA conserves the number of particles, the avalanches belong to the random walker universality class (critical exponent $σ_τ = 3/2$). We study the local densityof particles inside large avalanches showing a depletion of particles at the source of the avalanche and an enrichment at its end. In two dimensions we did extensive Monte-Carlo simulations and found $σ_τ = 1.782 \pm 0.005$.

Different facets of the raise and peel model

The raise and peel model is a one-dimensional stochastic model of a fluctuating interface with nonlocal interactions. This is an interesting physical model. It's phase diagram has a massive phase and a gapless phase with varying critical exponents. At the phase transition point, the model exhibits conformal invariance which is a space-time symmetry. Also at this point the model has several other facets which are the connections to associative algebras, two-dimensional fully packed loop models and combinatorics.

Exactly solvable interacting vertex models

We introduce and solvev a special family of integrable interacting vertex models that generalizes the well known six-vertex model. In addition to the usual nearest-neighbor interactions among the vertices, there exist extra hard-core interactions among pair of vertices at larger distances. The associated row-to-row transfer matrices are diagonalized by using the recently introduced matrix product {\it ansatz}. Similarly as the relation of the six-vertex model with the XXZ quantum chain, the row-to-row transfer matrices of these new models are also the generating functions of an infinite set of commuting conserved charges. Among these charges we identify the integrable generalization of the XXZ chain that contains hard-core exclusion interactions among the spins. These quantum chains already appeared in the literature. The present paper explains their integrability.

Density-functional formulations for quantum chains

We show that a lattice formulation of density-functional theory (DFT), guided by renormalization-group concepts, can be used to obtain numerical predictions of energy gaps, spin-density profiles, critical exponents, sound velocities, surface energies and conformal anomalies of spatially inhomogeneous quantum spin chains. To this end we (i) cast the formalism of DFT in the notation of quantum-spin chains, to make the powerful methods and concepts developed in {\em ab initio} DFT available to workers in this field; (ii) explore to what extent simple local approximations in the spirit of the local-density approximation (LDA), can be used to predict critical exponents and conformal anomalies of quantum spin models; (iii) propose and explore various nonlocal approximations, depending on the size of the system, or on its average density in addition to the local density. These nonlocal functionals turn out to be superior to LDA functionals.

Exactly Solvable Interacting Spin-Ice Vertex Model

A special family of solvable five-vertex model is introduced on a square lattice. In addition to the usual nearest neighbor interactions, the vertices defining the model also interact alongone of the diagonals of the lattice. Such family of models includes in a special limit the standard six-vertex model. The exact solution of these models gives the first application of the matrix product ansatz introduced recently and applied successfully in the solution of quantum chains. The phase diagram and the free energy of the models are calculated in the thermodynamic limit. The models exhibit massless phases and our analyticaland numerical analysis indicate that such phases are governed by a conformal field theory with central charge $c=1$ and continuosly varying critical exponents.

Conformal invariance and its breaking in a stochastic model of a fluctuating interface

Using Monte-Carlo simulations on large lattices, we study the effects of changing the parameter $u$ (the ratio of the adsorption and desorption rates) of the raise and peel model. This is a nonlocal stochastic model of a fluctuating interface. We show that for $0 1$ the conformal invariance is broken. The system is in a scale invariant but not conformal invariant phase. As far as we know it is the first example of a system which shows such a behavior. Moreover in the broken phase, the critical exponents vary continuously with the parameter $u$. This stays true also for the critical exponent $τ$ which characterizes the probability distribution function of avalanches (the critical exponent $D$ staying unchanged).

Supersymmetry on Jacobstahl lattices

It is shown that the construction of Yang and Fendley (2004 {\it J. Phys. A: Math.Gen. {\bf 37}} 8937) to obtainsupersymmetric systems, leads not to the open XXZ chain with anisotropy $Δ=-{1/2}$ but to systems having dimensions given by Jacobstahl sequences. For each system the ground state is unique. The continuum limit of the spectra of the Jacobstahl systems coincide, up to degeneracies, with that of the $U_q(sl(2))$ invariant XXZ chain for $q=\exp(iπ/3)$. The relation between the Jacobstahl systems and the open XXZ chain is explained.

Anomalous tag diffusion in the asymmetric exclusion model with particles of arbitrary sizes

Anomalous behavior of correlation functions of tagged particles are studied in generalizations of the one dimensional asymmetric exclusion problem. In these generalized models the range of the hard-core interactions are changed and the restriction of relative ordering of the particles is partially brocken. The models probing these effects are those of biased diffusion of particles having size S=0,1,2,..., or an effective negative "size" S=-1,-2,..., in units of lattice space. Our numerical simulations show that irrespective of the range of the hard-core potential, as long some relative ordering of particles are kept, we find suitable sliding-tag correlation functions whose fluctuations growth with time anomalously slow ($t^{1/3}$), when compared with the normal diffusive behavior ($t^{1/2}$). These results indicate that the critical behavior of these stochastic models are in the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) universality class. Moreover a previous Bethe-ansatz calculation of the dynamical critical exponent $z$, for size $S \geq 0$ particles is extended to the case $S<0$ and the KPZ result $z=3/2$ is predicted for all values of $S \in {Z}$.

Reaction-Diffusion Processes, Critical Dynamics and Quantum Chains

The master equation describing non-equilibrium one-dimensional problems like diffusion limited reactions or critical dynamics of classical spin systems can be written as a Schrödinger equation in which the wave function is the probability distribution and the Hamiltonian is that of a quantum chain with nearest neighbor interactions. Since many one-dimensional quantum chains are integrable, this opens a new field of applications. At the same time physical intuition and probabilistic methods bring new insight into the understanding of the properties of quantum chains. A simple example is the asymmetric diffusion of several species of particles which leads naturally to Hecke algebras and $q$-deformed quantum groups. Many other examples are given. Several relevant technical aspects like critical exponents, correlation functions and finite-size scaling are also discussed in detail.
