The NHIM bifurcation scenario of a particle in an asymmetric binary system of dwarf galaxies

We study the bifurcation scenario of a three-degree-of-freedom Hamiltonian system, a model based on the Lagrange restricted 3-body problem: a test particle moving in the gravitational field of a pair of interacting dwarf galaxies. The phase space of this system has 3 fundamental normally hyperbolic invariant manifolds (NHIMs) and their invariant stable and unstable manifolds form homoclinic/heteroclinic tangles. As the perturbation parameter increases, the NHIMs begin to lose normal hyperbolicity and their constituent KAM tori break, creating transient chaotic dynamics around them. We also observe a certain kind of coordination between the bifurcation scenarios of these NHIMs. We analyse this phenomenon using Poincaré maps and the delay time function.

Indicator Functions Detect Tangentially Transient Behaviour on Decaying Normally Hyperbolic Invariant Manifolds

We study the decay scenario of a codimension-2 NHIM in a three degrees of freedom Hamiltonian system under increasing perturbation when the NHIM loses its normal hyperbolicity. On one hand, we follow this decay in the Poincaré map for the internal dynamics of the NHIM. On the other hand, we also follow the decay in a time delay function calculated on a 2-dimensional plane in the phase space of the system. In addition, we observe the role of tangential transient effects on the decaying NHIM and their manifestation in the delay time indicator function. Thereby we obtain ideas on how the decay of NHIMs and the tangential transient effects are encoded in indicator functions. As an example of demonstration, we use the motion of an electron in a perturbed magnetic dipole field.

Impenetrable Barriers in the Phase Space of a Particle Moving Around a Kerr Rotating Black Hole

We study the phase space of a particle moving in the gravitational field of a rotating black hole described by the Kerr metric from a geometrical perspective. In particular, we show the construction of a multidimensional generalization of the unstable periodic orbits, known as Normally Hyperbolic Invariant Manifold, and its stable and unstable invariant manifolds that direct the dynamics in the phase space. Those stable and unstable invariant manifolds divide the phase space and are robust under perturbations. To visualize the multidimensional invariant sets under the flow in the phase space, we use a method based on the arclength of the trajectories in phase space known as Lagrangian descriptors in the literature.

A dynamical Interpretation of Sequential Decay in Reactive Scattering

The topic of this article is a dynamical explanation of the sequential decay in rearrangement scattering. The essential observation is the behaviour of trajectories close to the basin boundary of the breakup channel. As a most simplistic example of demonstration, we use a version of the perturbed three particle Calogero-Moser system in a 1-dimensional position space.

Introduction to special issue: Chaos Indicators, Phase Space and Chemical Reaction Dynamics

The study of the phase space of multidimensional systems is one of the central open problems in dynamical systems. Being able to distinguish chaoticity from regularity in nonlinear dynamical systems, as well as to determine the subspace of the phase space in which instabilities are expected to occur, is also an important field. To investigate these, diverse chaos indicators have been developed. The information provided from these indicators is important to understand the dynamical behavior of many systems in celestial mechanics and, more recently, in chemical reaction dynamics. This special issue contains new results around the topics: phase space structure, chaos indicators, and chemical reaction dynamics.

The numerical search for the internal dynamics of NHIMs and their pictorial representation

The topic of this article is the numerical search of codimension 2 Normally Hyperbolic Invariant Manifolds (NHIM) in Hamiltonian systems with 3 degrees of freedom and their internal dynamics. We point out relations between different strategies to find such surfaces numerically. We can start from index-1 saddles of the effective potential or from a partially integrable case and follow the NHIM along some curve in the parameter space of the system. Or, we can look for the stable and unstable manifolds of such surfaces by an appropriate indicator method. We show numerical examples for an electron moving in a perturbed magnetic dipole field.

Transport and roaming on the Double van der Waals Potential Energy Surface

This paper explores the phase space structures characterising transport for a double-well van der Waals potential surface. Trajectories are classified as inter-well, intra-well, and escaping-from-a-well to define different dynamical fates. In particular, roaming trajectories, which are a new paradigm in chemical reaction dynamics, are observed. We apply the method of Lagrangian descriptors to uncover the boundaries between the fates. We find that the boundaries between different fates are the stable and unstable manifolds of the hyperbolic periodic orbits, which bifurcate when the energy increases. The methodology presented here applies to other open systems with a double-well potential.

Revealing the phase space structure of Hamiltonian systems using the action

In this work, we analyse the properties of the Maupertuis' action as a tool to reveal the phase space structure for Hamiltonian systems. We construct a scalar field with the action's values along the trajectories in the phase space. The different behaviour of the trajectories around important phase space objects like unstable periodic orbits, their stable and unstable manifolds, and KAM islands generate characteristic patterns on the scalar field constructed with the action. Using these different patterns is possible to identify the skeleton of the phase space and understand the dynamics. Also, we present a simple argument based on the conservation of the energy and the behaviour of the trajectories to understand the values of their actions. In order to show how this tool reveals the phase space structures and its effectiveness, we compare the scalar field constructed with the actions with Poincare maps for the same set of initial conditions in the phase space of an open Hamiltonian system with 2 degrees of freedom.

Phase space structure and escape time dynamics in a Van der Waals model for exothermic reactions

We study the phase space structures that control the transport in a classical Hamiltonian model for a chemical reaction. This model has been proposed to study the yield of products in an ultracold exothermic reaction. In the considered model, two elements determine the evolution of the system: a Van der Waals force and short-range force associated with the many-body interactions. In the previous work has been used small random periodic changes in the direction of the momentum to simulate the short-range many-body interactions. In the present work, random Gaussian bumps have been added to the Van der Waals potential energy simulate the short-range effects between the particles in the system. We compare both variants of the model and explain their differences similarities and differences from a phase space perspective. In order to visualize the structures that direct the dynamics in the phase space, we construct a natural Lagrangian descriptor for Hamiltonian systems based on the Maupertuis action $S_0$.

Revealing Roaming on the Double Morse Potential Energy Surface with Lagrangian Descriptors

In this paper, we analyse the phase space structure of the roaming dynamics in a two degree of freedom potential energy surface consisting of two identical planar Morse potentials separated by a distance. This potential energy surface was previously studied in [1], and it has two potential wells surrounded by an unbounded flat region containing no critical points. We study the phase space mechanism for the transference between the wells using the method of Lagrangian descriptors.
