Spin relaxation times in disordered graphene

We consider two mechanisms of spin relaxation in disordered graphene. i) Spin relaxation due to curvature spin orbit coupling caused by ripples. ii) Spin relaxation due to the interaction of the electronic spin with localized magnetic moments at the edges. We obtain analytical expressions for the spin relaxation times, tau_SO and tau_J due to both mechanisms and estimate their values for realistic parameters of graphene samples. We obtain that spin relaxation originating from these mechanisms is very weak and spin coherence is expected in disordered graphene up to samples of length L ~ 1 micron.

Orthogonality catastrophe and Kondo effect in graphene

Anderson's orthogonality catastrophe in graphene, at energies close to the Dirac point, is analyzed. It is shown that, in clean systems, the orthogonality catastrophe is suppressed, due to the vanishing density of states at the Dirac point. In the presence of preexisting localized states at the Dirac energy, the orthogonality catastrophe shows similar features to those found in normal metals with a finite density of states at the Fermi level. The implications for the Kondo effect induced by magnetic impurities, and for the Fermi edge singularities in tunneling processes are also discussed.

Existence and topological stability of Fermi points in multilayered graphene

We study the existence and topological stability of Fermi points in a graphene layer and stacks with many layers. We show that the discrete symmetries (spacetime inversion) stabilize the Fermi points in monolayer, bilayer and multilayer graphene with orthorhombic stacking. The bands near $k=0$ and $ε=0$ in multilayers with the Bernal stacking depend on the parity of the number of layers, and Fermi points are unstable when the number of layers is odd. The low energy changes in the electronic structure induced by commensurate perturbations which mix the two Dirac points are also investigated.

Pseudo-diffusive magnetotransport in graphene

Transport properties through wide and short ballistic graphene junctions are studied in the presence of arbitrary dopings and magnetic fields. No dependence on the magnetic field is observed at the Dirac point for any current cumulant, just as in a classical diffusive system, both in normal-graphene-normal and normal-graphene-superconductor junctions. This pseudo-diffusive regime is however extremely fragile respect to doping at finite fields. We identify the crossovers to a field-suppressed and a normal ballistic transport regime in the magnetic field - doping parameter space, and provide a physical interpretation of the phase diagram. Remarkably, pseudo-diffusive transport is recovered away from the Dirac point in resonance with Landau levels at high magnetic fields.

Deformation of anisotropic Fermi surfaces due to electron-electron interactions

We analyze the deformations of the Fermi surface induced by electron-electron interactions in anisotropic two dimensional systems. We use perturbation theory to treat, on the same footing, the regular and singular regions of the Fermi surface. It is shown that, even for weak local coupling, the self-energy presents a nontrivial behavior showing momentum dependence and interplay with the Fermi surface shape. Our scheme gives simple analytical expressions based on local features of the Fermi surface.

Electron-Phonon Coupling and Raman Spectroscopy in Graphene

We show that the electron-phonon coupling in graphene, in contrast with the non-relativistic two-dimensional electron gas, leads to shifts in the phonon frequencies that are non-trivial functions of the electronic density. These shifts can be measured directly in Raman spectroscopy. We show that depending whether the chemical potential is smaller (larger) than half of the phonon frequency, the frequency shift can negative (positive) relative to the neutral case (when the chemical potential is at the Dirac point), respectively. We show that the use of the static response function to calculate these shifts is incorrect and leads always to phonon softening. In samples with many layers, we find a shift proportional to the carrier concentration, and a splitting of the phonon frequencies if the charge is not homogeneously distributed. We also discuss the effects of edges in the problem.

Interactions and disorder in 2D graphite sheets

The present work discusses theoretical models which address the effects of electron--electron interactions and disorder in graphene planes. The starting point for the study is a simple tight-binding model for the electronic structure followed by discussion of the interesting features induced by the unscreened Coulomb interaction. The unusual features of the model are emphasized. It is shown that the standard perturbative treatments used in condensed matter theory fail, and a more refined renormalization group approach is required. Then, a theoretical framework which allows us to extend the model to many types of disorder, following an early approach dessigned to treat the fivefold rings of the fullerenes, is discussed. The combined effects of disorder and interactions gives rise to a phase diagram with new strongly interacting phases.

Electron backscattering from dynamical impurities in a Luttinger liquid

Electron backscattering in a Luttinger liquid with an impurity is investigated in the presence of zero point motion of the phonon lattice. The impurity can mean either a mass defect, an elastic defect or a pinning defect. The phonon spectrum is then affected by the presence of the defect, which enters in the renormalization group equations for backscattering. The RG equation becomes dependent on the energy cutoff for finite Debye frequency $ω_D$ giving rise to finite energy effects. We compute the local density of states and show how the renormalization group flow is affected by a finite $ω_D$.

Interplay between exchange interactions and charging effects in metallic grains

We study the effect of the exchange interactions in small superconducting grains near the Coulomb blockade regime. We extend the standard description of the grain in terms of a single collective variable, the charge and its conjugated phase, to include the spin degree of freedom. The suppression of spin fluctuations enhances the tendency towards Coulomb blockade. The effective charging energy and conductance are calculated numerically in the regime of large grain-lead coupling.

Superconductivity in electron-doped cuprates: Gap shape change and symmetry crossover with doping

The Kohn-Luttinger mechanism for superconductivity is investigated in a model for the electron doped cuprates. The symmetry of the order parameter of the superconducting phase is determined as a function of the geometry of the Fermi surface together with the structure of the electron-hole susceptibility. It is found to remain d_{x^2-y^2} wave within a large doping range. The shape of the gap anisotropy evolves with doping, with the maximum gap moving away from (pi ,0), in good agreement with recent experiments. As the shift of the maximum increases, a crossover to d_{xy}-symmetry is found.

Confinement of electrons in layered metals

We analyze the out of plane hopping in models of layered systems where the in--plane properties deviate from Landau's theory of a Fermi liquid. We show that the hopping term acquires a non trivial energy dependence, due to the coupling to in plane excitations, and can be either relevant or irrelevant at low energies or temperatures. The latter is always the case if the Fermi level lies close to a saddle point in the dispersion relation.

DC current through a superconducting two-barrier system

We analyze the influence of the structure within a SNS junction on the multiple Andreev resonances in the subgap I-V characteristics. Coherent interference processes and incoherent propagation in the normal region are considered. The detailed geometry of the normal region where the voltage drops in superconducting contacts can lead to observable effects in the conductance at low voltages.

Subgap resonances and conduction channels in mesoscopic superconducting devices

Peaks associated to multiple Andreev reflections have been used to identify the number of conduction channels, and their transmitivity in mesoscopic superconducting junctions. We analyze the influence of the detailed shape of each channel, and the number of weak links within it, on the final results. Connexions with the statistical interpretation of conductance histograms is also made.

Phase separation in double exchange systems

Ferromagnetic systems described by the double exchange model are investigated. At temperatures close to the Curie temperature, and for a wide range of doping levels, the system is unstable toward phase separation. The chemical potential decreases upon increasing doping, due to the significant dependence of the bandwidth on the number of carriers. The reduction of the electronic bandwidth by spin disorder leads to an enormously enhanced thermopower which peaks near T_c, with a sign opposite that predicted by a rigid band model.

Phase Diagram of Doped Manganates

The phase diagram of doped manganate compounds La_{1-x}A_xMnO_3 (with divalent A) is studied. We analyze an extension of the double exchange model using the Schwinger boson formalism. Earlier work by de Gennes on the existence of a canted phase is reproduced, although this phase is shown to be unstable towards phase separation in a broad regime of physical interest. We numerically solve the model's mean field equations and plot its phase diagram.

Integer and fractional charge solitons in modulated strips in the fractional quantum Hall regime

We propose the existence and study the solitonic excitations in two kinds of samples in the fractional quantum Hall regime. One is a strip modulated by a one-dimensional array of gates. The other is made of two parallel strips coupled by a one-dimensional array of tunnel barriers. We predict the existence of integer charge solitons in the first case, and fractional charge solitons in the second case. We study the two cases both in the dissipative and in the inertial limits.
