A Kaplansky Theorem for JB*-triples

Let $T:E\rightarrow F$ be a non-necessarily continuous triple homomorphism from a (complex) JB$^*$-triple (respectively, a (real) J$^*$B-triple) to a normed Jordan triple. The following statements hold: (1) $T$ has closed range whenever $T$ is continuous (2) $T$ has closed range whenever $T$ is continuous This result generalises classical theorems of I. Kaplansky and S.B. Cleveland in the setting of C$^*$-algebras and of A. Bensebah and J.Pérez, L. Rico and A. Rodr'\iguez Palacios in the setting of JB$^*$-algebras.

On the strict topology of the multipliers of a JB$^*$-algebra

We introduce the Jordan-strict topology on the multipliers algebra of a JB$^*$-algebra, a notion which was missing despite the fourty years passed after the first studies on Jordan multipliers. In case that a C$^*$-algebra $A$ is regarded as a JB$^*$-algebra, the J-strict topology of $M(A)$ is precisely the well-studied C$^*$-strict topology. We prove that every JB$^*$-algebra $\mathfrak{A}$ is J-strict dense in its multipliers algebra $M(\mathfrak{A})$, and that latter algebra is J-strict complete. We show that continuous surjective Jordan homomorphisms, triple homomorphisms, and orthogonality preserving operators between JB$^*$-algebras admit J-strict continuous extensions to the corresponding type of operators between the multipliers algebras. We characterize J-strict continuous functionals on the multipliers algebra of a JB$^*$-algebra $\mathfrak{A}$, and we establish that the dual of $M(\mathfrak{A})$ with respect to the J-strict topology is isometrically isomorphic to $\mathfrak{A}^*$. We also present a first applications of the J-strict topology of the multipliers algebra, by showing that under the extra hypothesis that $\mathfrak{A}$ and $\mathfrak{B}$ are $σ$-unital JB$^*$-algebras, every surjective Jordan $^*$-homomorphism (respectively, triple homomorphism or continuous orthogonality preserving operator) from $\mathfrak{A}$ onto $\mathfrak{B}$ admits an extension to a surjective J-strict continuous Jordan $^*$-homomorphism (respectively, triple homomorphism or continuous orthogonality preserving operator) from $M(\mathfrak{A})$ onto $M(\mathfrak{B})$.

The minimax principle and related topics in the Jordan setting

We prove a minimax principle for weakly compact JB$^*$-triples characterizing geometrically the singular values of an element. Among the consequences of this principle we present a Weyl inequality on the perturbation of the singular values and a Cauchy-Poincaré (interlacing) theorem. We also obtain a version of the Ky Fan maximum principle in the setting of weakly compact JB$^*$-triples. We study perturbations of the spectral resolutions showing that small perturbations of an element produces small perturbations of the corresponding spectral resolutions. As a consequence we obtain that weakly compact JB$^*$-triples satisfy the property that perturbations of a convex combination of elements in the closed unit ball coincide with a convex combination of perturbations of the elements also in the closed unit ball. All these results hold true when particularized to weakly compact JB$^*$-algebras.

On the extension of isometries between the unit spheres of a JBW$^*$-triple and a Banach space

We prove that every JBW$^*$-triple $M$ with rank one or rank bigger than or equal to three satisfies the Mazur--Ulam property, that is, every surjective isometry from the unit sphere of $M$ onto the unit sphere of another Banach space $Y$ extends to a surjective real linear isometry from $M$ onto $Y$. We also show that the same conclusion holds if $M$ is not a JBW$^*$-triple factor, or more generally, if the atomic part of $M^{**}$ is not a rank two Cartan factor.

Tingley's problem for $p$-Schatten von Neumann classes

Let $H$ and $H'$ be a complex Hilbert spaces. For $p\in(1, \infty)\backslash\{2\}$ we consider the Banach space $C_p(H)$ of all $p$-Schatten von Neumann operators, whose unit sphere is denoted by $S(C_p(H))$. We prove that every surjective isometry $Δ: S(C_p(H))\to S(C_p(H'))$ can be extended to a complex linear or to a conjugate linear surjective isometry $T:C_p(H)\to C_p(H')$.

Tingley's problem for spaces of trace class operators

We prove that every surjective isometry between the unit spheres of two trace class spaces admits a unique extension to a surjective complex linear or conjugate linear isometry between the spaces. This provides a positive solution to Tingley's problem in a new class of operator algebras.

On the extension of isometries between the unit spheres of a C*-algebra and B(H)

Given two complex Hilbert spaces $H$ and $K$, let $S(B(H))$ and $S(B(K))$ denote the unit spheres of the C$^*$-algebras $B(H)$ and $B(K)$ of all bounded linear operators on $H$ and $K$, respectively. We prove that every surjective isometry $f: S(B(K)) \to S(B(H))$ admits an extension to a surjective complex linear or conjugate linear isometry $T: B(K)\to B(H)$. This provides a positive answer to Tingley's problem in the setting of $B(H)$ spaces.

A Kowalski-Słodkowski theorem for 2-local $^*$-homomorphisms on von Neumann algebras

It is established that every (not necessarily linear) 2-local $^*$-homomorphism from a von Neumann algebra into a C$^*$-algebra is linear and a $^*$-homomorphism. In the setting of (not necessarily linear) 2-local $^*$-homomorphism from a compact C$^*$-algebra we prove that the same conclusion remains valid. We also prove that every 2-local Jordan $^*$-homomorphism from a JBW$^*$-algebra into a JB$^*$-algebra is linear and a Jordan $^*$-homomorphism.

Local triple derivations on real C*-algebras and JB*-triples

We study when a local triple derivation on a real JB*-triple is a triple derivation. We find an example of a (real linear) local triple derivation on a rank-one Cartan factor of type I which is not a triple derivation. On the other hand, we find sufficient conditions on a real JB*-triple E to guarantee that every local triple derivation on E is a triple derivation.

Local triple derivations on C*-algebras and JB*-triples

In a first result we prove that every continuous local triple derivation on a JB$^*$-triple is a triple derivation. We also give an automatic continuity result, that is, we show that local triple derivations on a JB$^*$-triple are continuous even if not assumed a priori to be so. In particular every local triple derivation on a C$^*$-algebra is a triple derivation. We also explore the connections between (bounded local) triple derivations and generalised (Jordan) derivations on a C$^*$-algebra.

Local triple derivations on C*-algebras

We prove that every bounded local triple derivation on a unital C*-algebra is a triple derivation. A similar statement is established in the category of unital JB*-algebras.
