Conformal compactification and cycle-preserving symmetries of spacetimes

The cycle-preserving symmetries for the nine two-dimensional real spaces of constant curvature are collectively obtained within a Cayley-Klein framework. This approach affords a unified and global study of the conformal structure of the three classical Riemannian spaces as well as of the six relativistic and non-relativistic spacetimes (Minkowskian, de Sitter, anti-de Sitter, both Newton-Hooke and Galilean), and gives rise to general expressions holding simultaneously for all of them. Their metric structure and cycles (lines with constant geodesic curvature that include geodesics and circles) are explicitly characterized. The corresponding cyclic (Mobius-like) Lie groups together with the differential realizations of their algebras are then deduced; this derivation is new and much simpler than the usual ones and applies to any homogeneous space in the Cayley-Klein family, whether flat or curved and with any signature. Laplace and wave-type differential equations with conformal algebra symmetry are constructed. Furthermore, the conformal groups are realized as matrix groups acting as globally defined linear transformations in a four-dimensional "conformal ambient space", which in turn leads to an explicit description of the "conformal completion" or compactification of the nine spaces.

A new Lie algebra expansion method: Galilei expansions to Poincare and Newton-Hooke

We modify a Lie algebra expansion method recently introduced for the (2+1)-dimensional kinematical algebras so as to work for higher dimensions. This new improved and geometrical procedure is applied to expanding the (3+1)-dimensional Galilei algebra and leads to its physically meaningful `expanded' neighbours. One expansion gives rise to the Poincare algebra, introducing a curvature $-1/c^2$ in the flat Galilean space of worldlines, while keeping a flat spacetime which changes from absolute to relative time in the process. This formally reverses, at a Lie algebra level, the well known non-relativistic contraction $c\to \infty$ that goes from the Poincare group to the Galilei one; this expansion is done in an explicit constructive way. The other possible expansion leads to the Newton-Hooke algebras, endowing with a non-zero spacetime curvature $\pm 1/τ^2$ the spacetime, while keeping a flat space of worldlines.

New time-type and space-type non-standard quantum algebras and discrete symmetries

Starting from the classical r-matrix of the non-standard (or Jordanian) quantum deformation of the sl(2,R) algebra, new triangular quantum deformations for the real Lie algebras so(2,2), so(3,1) and iso(2,1) are simultaneously constructed by using a graded contraction scheme; these are realized as deformations of conformal algebras of (1+1)-dimensional spacetimes. Time-type and space-type quantum algebras are considered according to the generator that remains primitive after deformation: either the time or the space translation, respectively. Furthermore by introducing differential-difference conformal realizations, these families of quantum algebras are shown to be the symmetry algebras of either a time or a space discretization of (1+1)-dimensional (wave and Laplace) equations on uniform lattices; the relationship with the known Lie symmetry approach to these discrete equations is established by means of twist maps.

Quantum (1+1) extended Galilei algebras: from Lie bialgebras to quantum R-matrices and integrable systems

The Lie bialgebras of the (1+1) extended Galilei algebra are obtained and classified into four multiparametric families. Their quantum deformations are obtained, together with the corresponding deformed Casimir operators. For the coboundary cases quantum universal R-matrices are also given. Applications of the quantum extended Galilei algebras to classical integrable systems are explicitly developed.

(1+1) Schrodinger Lie bialgebras and their Poisson-Lie groups

All Lie bialgebra structures for the (1+1)-dimensional centrally extended Schrodinger algebra are explicitly derived and proved to be of the coboundary type. Therefore, since all of them come from a classical r-matrix, the complete family of Schrodinger Poisson-Lie groups can be deduced by means of the Sklyanin bracket. All possible embeddings of the harmonic oscillator, extended Galilei and gl(2) Lie bialgebras within the Schrodinger classification are studied. As an application, new quantum (Hopf algebra) deformations of the Schrodinger algebra, including their corresponding quantum universal R-matrices, are constructed.

A new quantum so(2,2) algebra

By starting from the non-standard quantum deformation of the sl(2,R) algebra, a new quantum deformation for the real Lie algebra so(2,2) is constructed by imposing the former to be a Hopf subalgebra of the latter. The quantum so(2,2) algebra so obtained is realized as a quantum conformal algebra of the (1+1) Minkowskian spacetime. This Hopf algebra is shown to be the symmetry algebra of a time discretization of the (1+1) wave equation and its contraction gives rise to a new $(2+1)$ quantum Poincaré algebra.

Integrable deformations of oscillator chains from quantum algebras

A family of completely integrable nonlinear deformations of systems of N harmonic oscillators are constructed from the non-standard quantum deformation of the sl(2,R) algebra. Explicit expressions for all the associated integrals of motion are given, and the long-range nature of the interactions introduced by the deformation is shown to be linked to the underlying coalgebra structure. Separability and superintegrability properties of such systems are analysed, and their connection with classical angular momentum chains is used to construct a non-standard integrable deformation of the XXX hyperbolic Gaudin system.

Trigonometry of spacetimes: a new self-dual approach to a curvature/signature (in)dependent trigonometry

A new method to obtain trigonometry for the real spaces of constant curvature and metric of any (even degenerate) signature is presented. The method encapsulates trigonometry for all these spaces into a single basic trigonometric group equation. This brings to its logical end the idea of an absolute trigonometry, and provides equations which hold true for the nine two-dimensional spaces of constant curvature and any signature. This family of spaces includes both relativistic and non-relativistic homogeneous spacetimes; therefore a complete discussion of trigonometry in the six de Sitter, minkowskian, Newton--Hooke and galilean spacetimes follow as particular instances of the general approach. Any equation previously known for the three classical riemannian spaces also has a version for the remaining six spacetimes; in most cases these equations are new. Distinctive traits of the method are universality and self-duality: every equation is meaningful for the nine spaces at once, and displays explicitly invariance under a duality transformation relating the nine spaces. The derivation of the single basic trigonometric equation at group level, its translation to a set of equations (cosine, sine and dual cosine laws) and the natural apparition of angular and lateral excesses, area and coarea are explicitly discussed in detail. The exposition also aims to introduce the main ideas of this direct group theoretical way to trigonometry, and may well provide a path to systematically study trigonometry for any homogeneous symmetric space.

The families of orthogonal, unitary and quaternionic unitary Cayley--Klein algebras and their central extensions

The families of quasi-simple or Cayley--Klein algebras associated to antihermitian matrices over R, C and H are described in a unified framework. These three families include simple and non-simple real Lie algebras which can be obtained by contracting the pseudo-orthogonal algebras so(p,q) of the Cartan series $B_l$ and $D_l$, the special pseudo-unitary algebras su(p,q) in the series $A_l$, and the quaternionic pseudo-unitary algebras sq(p,q) in the series $C_l$. This approach allows to study many properties for all these Lie algebras simultaneously. In particular their non-trivial central extensions are completely determined in arbitrary dimension.

Integrable deformations of Hamiltonian systems and q-symmetries

The complete integrability of the hyperbolic Gaudin Hamiltonian and other related integrable systems is shown to be easily derived by taking into account their sl(2,R) coalgebra symmetry. By using the properties induced by such a coalgebra structure, it can be proven that the introduction of any quantum deformation of the sl(2,R) algebra will provide an integrable deformation for such systems. In particular, the Gaudin Hamiltonian arising from the non-standard quantum deformation of the sl(2,R) Poisson algebra is presented, including the explicit expressions for its integrals of motion. A completely integrable system of nonlinearly coupled oscillators derived from this deformation is also introduced.

Two-photon algebra deformations

In order to obtain a classification of all possible quantum deformations of the two-photon algebra $h_6$, we introduce its corresponding general Lie bialgebra, which is a coboundary one. Two non-standard quantum deformations of $h_6$, together with their associated quantum universal R-matrix, are presented; each of them contains either a quantum harmonic oscillator subalgebra or a quantum gl(2) subalgebra. One-boson representations for these quantum two-photon algebras are derived and translated into Fock--Bargmann realizations. In this way, a systematic study of `deformed' states of light in quantum optics can be developed.

Multiparametric quantum gl(2): Lie bialgebras, quantum R-matrices and non-relativistic limits

Multiparametric quantum deformations of $gl(2)$ are studied through a complete classification of $gl(2)$ Lie bialgebra structures. From them, the non-relativistic limit leading to harmonic oscillator Lie bialgebras is implemented by means of a contraction procedure. New quantum deformations of $gl(2)$ together with their associated quantum $R$-matrices are obtained and other known quantizations are recovered and classified. Several connections with integrable models are outlined.

2+1 Kinematical expansions: from Galilei to de Sitter algebras

Expansions of Lie algebras are the opposite process of contractions. Starting from a Lie algebra, the expansion process goes to another one, non-isomorphic and less abelian. We propose an expansion method based in the Casimir invariants of the initial and expanded algebras and where the free parameters involved in the expansion are the curvatures of their associated homogeneous spaces. This method is applied for expansions within the family of Lie algebras of 3d spaces and (2+1)d kinematical algebras. We show that these expansions are classed in two types. The first type makes different from zero the curvature of space or space-time (i.e., it introduces a space or universe radius), while the other has a similar interpretation for the curvature of the space of worldlines, which is non-positive and equal to $-1/c^2$ in the kinematical algebras. We get expansions which go from Galilei to either Newton--Hooke or Poincaré algebras, and from these ones to de Sitter algebras, as well as some other examples.

The family of quaternionic quasi-unitary Lie algebras and their central extensions

The family of quaternionic quasi-unitary (or quaternionic unitary Cayley--Klein algebras) is described in a unified setting. This family includes the simple algebras sp(N+1) and sp(p,q) in the Cartan series C_{N+1}, as well as many non-semisimple real Lie algebras which can be obtained from these simple algebras by particular contractions. The algebras in this family are realized here in relation with the groups of isometries of quaternionic hermitian spaces of constant holomorphic curvature. This common framework allows to perform the study of many properties for all these Lie algebras simultaneously. In this paper the central extensions for all quasi-simple Lie algebras of the quaternionic unitary Cayley--Klein family are completely determined in arbitrary dimension. It is shown that the second cohomology group is trivial for any Lie algebra of this family no matter of its dimension.

On quantum algebra symmetries of discrete Schrödinger equations

Two non-standard quantum deformations of the (1+1) Schrödinger algebra are identified with the symmetry algebras of either a space or time uniform lattice discretization of the Schrödinger equation. For both cases, the deformation parameter of the corresponding Hopf algebra can be interpreted as the step of the lattice. In this context, the introduction of nonlinear maps defining Schrödinger and $sl(2,\R)$ quantum algebras with classical commutation rules turns out to be relevant. The problem of finding a quantum algebra linked to the full space-time discretization is also discussed.

Long range integrable oscillator chains from quantum algebras

Completely integrable Hamiltonians defining classical mechanical systems of $N$ coupled oscillators are obtained from Poisson realizations of Heisenberg--Weyl, harmonic oscillator and $sl(2,\R)$ coalgebras. Various completely integrable deformations of such systems are constructed by considering quantum deformations of these algebras. Explicit expressions for all the deformed Hamiltonians and constants of motion are given, and the long-range nature of the interactions is shown to be linked to the underlying coalgebra structure. The relationship between oscillator systems induced from the $sl(2,\R)$ coalgebra and angular momentum chains is presented, and a non-standard integrable deformation of the hyperbolic Gaudin system is obtained.

Quantum two-photon algebra from non-standard U_z(sl(2,R)) and a discrete time Schrödinger equation

The non-standard quantum deformation of the (trivially) extended sl(2,R) algebra is used to construct a new quantum deformation of the two-photon algebra h_6 and its associated quantum universal R-matrix. A deformed one-boson representation for this algebra is deduced and applied to construct a first order deformation of the differential equation that generates the two-photon algebra eigenstates in Quantum Optics. On the other hand, the isomorphism between h_6 and the (1+1) Schrödinger algebra leads to a new quantum deformation for the latter for which a differential-difference realization is presented. From it, a time discretization of the heat-Schrödinger equation is obtained and the quantum Schrödinger generators are shown to be symmetry operators.
