Generalizing Liquid Democracy to multi-agent delegation: A Voting Weight Measure and Equilibrium Analysis

In this study, we propose a generalization of the classic model of liquid democracy that allows fractional delegation of voting weight, while simultaneously allowing for the existence of equilibrium states. Our approach empowers agents to partition and delegate their votes to multiple representatives, all while retaining a fraction of the voting power for themselves. We introduce a penalty mechanism for the length of delegation chains. We discuss the desirable properties of a reasonable generalization of the classic model, and prove that smaller penalty factors bring the model closer to satisfying these properties. In the subsequent section, we explore the presence of equilibrium states in a general delegation game utilizing the proposed voting measure. In contrast to the classical model, we demonstrate that this game exhibits pure strategy Nash equilibria, contingent upon the imposition of a penalty on the length of delegation chains.

A deep first-order system least squares method for the obstacle problem

We propose a deep learning approach to the obstacle problem inspired by the first-order system least-squares (FOSLS) framework. This method reformulates the problem as a convex minimization task; by simultaneously approximating the solution, gradient, and Lagrange multiplier, our approach provides a flexible, mesh-free alternative that scales efficiently to high-dimensional settings. Key theoretical contributions include the coercivity and local Lipschitz continuity of the proposed least-squares functional, along with convergence guarantees via $Γ$-convergence theory under mild regularity assumptions. Numerical experiments in dimensions up to 20 demonstrate the method's robustness and scalability, even on non-Lipschitz domains.

Finite element approximation of fractional Neumann problems

In this paper we consider approximations of Neumann problems for the integral fractional Laplacian by continuous, piecewise linear finite elements. We analyze the weak formulation of such problems, including their well-posedness and asymptotic behavior of solutions. We address the convergence of the finite element discretizations and discuss the implementation of the method. Finally, we present several numerical experiments in one- and two-dimensional domains that illustrate the method's performance as well as certain properties of solutions.

A deep first-order system least squares method for solving elliptic PDEs

We propose a First-Order System Least Squares (FOSLS) method based on deep-learning for numerically solving second-order elliptic PDEs. The method we propose is capable of dealing with either variational and non-variational problems, and because of its meshless nature, it can also deal with problems posed in high-dimensional domains. We prove the $Γ$-convergence of the neural network approximation towards the solution of the continuous problem, and extend the convergence proof to some well-known related methods. Finally, we present several numerical examples illustrating the performance of our discretization.

Local and nonlocal energy-based coupling models

In this paper we study two different ways of coupling a local operator with a nonlocal one in such a way that the resulting equation is related to an energy functional. In the first strategy the coupling is given via source terms in the equation and in the second one a flux condition in the local part appears. For both models we prove existence and uniqueness of a solution that is obtained via direct minimization of the related energy functional. In the second part of this paper we extend these ideas to deal with local/nonlocal elasticity models in which we couple classical local elasticity with nonlocal peridynamics.

Finite element approximations for fractional evolution problems

This work introduces and analyzes a finite element scheme for evolution problems involving fractional-in-time and in-space differentiation operators up to order two. The left-sided fractional-order derivative in time we consider is employed to represent memory effects, while a nonlocal differentiation operator in space accounts for long-range dispersion processes. We discuss well-posedness and obtain regularity estimates for the evolution problems under consideration. The discrete scheme we develop is based on piecewise linear elements for the space variable and a convolution quadrature for the time component. We illustrate the method's performance with numerical experiments in one- and two-dimensional domains.

A short FE implementation for a 2d homogeneous Dirichlet problem of a Fractional Laplacian

In \cite{AcostaBorthagaray}, a complete $n$-dimensional finite element analysis of the homogeneous Dirichlet problem associated to a fractional Laplacian was presented. Here we provide a comprehensive and simple 2D {\it MATLAB}\textsuperscript{\textregistered} finite element code for such a problem. The code is accompanied with a basic discussion of the theory relevant in the context. The main program is written in about 80 lines and can be easily modified to deal with other kernels as well as with time dependent problems. The present work fills a gap by providing an input for a large number of mathematicians and scientists interested in numerical approximations of solutions of a large variety of problems involving nonlocal phenomena in two-dimensional space.
