Two simple models derived from a quantum-mechanical particle on an elliptical path

We analyze two simple models derived from a quantum-mechanical particle on an elliptical path. The first Hamiltonian operator is non-Hermitian but equivalent to an Hermitian operator. It exhibits the same two-fold degeneracy as the particle on a circular path. More precisely, the spectrum is $E_{n}=n^{2}E_{1},\ n=0,\pm 1,\pm 2,\ldots $, $E_{1}>0$. The second Hamiltonian operator is Hermitian and does not exhibit such degeneracy. In this case the nth excited energy level splits at the nth order of perturbation theory. Both models can be described in terms of symmetry point groups with one-dimensional irreducible representations but the non-Hermitian example exhibits an additional symmetry that explains the two-fold degeneracy. The Schrödinger equation for the first example is exactly solvable.

On some potentials based on exponential functions

By means of a simple and systematic normalization method we show that some apparently different potentials based on exponential functions are equivalent. Present normalization method only requires that the potential exhibits a minimum and is finite when the radial variable tends to infinity.

Equivalent potential-energy functions

Many researchers have proposed their own potential-energy functions for the study of diatomic molecules, some of which have been proved to be equivalent. In this paper we suggest the application of a few simple rules to determine the equivalence between molecular potentials. The resulting systematic procedure is illustrated by means of several examples.

Exact solutions, critical parameters and accidental degeneracy for the hydrogen atom in a spherical box

We derive some properties of the hydrogen atom inside a box with an impenetrable wall that have not been discussed before. Suitable scaling of the Hamiltonian operator proves to be useful for the derivation of some general properties of the eigenvalues. The radial part of the Schrödinger equation is conditionally solvable and the exact polynomial solutions provide useful information. There are accidental degeneracies that take place at particular values of the box radius, some of which can be determined from the conditionally-solvable condition. Some of the roots stemming from the conditionally-solvable condition appear to converge towards the critical values of the model parameter. This analysis is facilitated by the Rayleigh-Ritz method that provides accurate eigenvalues.

Sheared potentials and travelling nodes

When a sheared potential is deformed in such a way that the distance between the classical turning points remains constant the eigenvalues of the Schrödinger equation oscillate with respect to the potential parameter responsible for the deformation. We show that such an oscillation is intimately related to the passing of the nodes of the corresponding eigenfunctions through the origin. We illustrate this effect by means of the split harmonic oscillator and the split linear potential.

On the two-dimensional hydrogen atom in a circular box in the presence of an electric field

We revisit the quantum-mechanical two-dimensional hydrogen atom with an electric field confined to a circular box of impenetrable wall. In order to obtain the energy spectrum we resort to the Rayleigh-Ritz method with a polynomial basis sets. We discuss the limits of large and small box radius and the symmetry of the solutions of the Schrödinger equation. An interesting feature of the model is the appearance of accidental degeneracy and the splitting of degenerate energy levels due to the presence of the electric field.

On the application of the Rayleigh-Ritz method to a projected Hamiltonian

We apply the well known Rayleigh-Ritz method (RRM) to the projection of a Hamiltonian operator chosen recently for the extension of the Rayleigh-Ritz variational principle to ensemble states. By means of a toy model we show that the RRM eigenvalues approach to those of the projected Hamiltonian from below in most cases but a few ones. We also discuss the effect of an energy shift and the projection of the identity operator.

Just another conditionally-solvable non-relativistic quantum-mechanical model

We show that a perturbed Coulomb problem discussed recently is conditionally solvable. We obtain the exact eigenvalues and eigenfunctions and compare the former with eigenvalues calculated by means of a numerical method. We discuss the meaning of the numbers that determine the exact solutions which arise from the Frobenius (power-series) method.

On the two-dimensional harmonic oscillator with an electric field confined to a circular box

We revisit the quantum-mechanical two-dimensional harmonic oscillator with an electric field confined to a circular box of impenetrable walls. In order to obtain the energy spectrum we resort to the Rayleigh-Ritz method with polynomial and Gaussian basis sets. We compare present results with those derived recently by other authors. We discuss the limits of large and small box radius and also do some calculations with perturbation theory.

On the screened Kratzer potential and its variants

We argue that several potentials proposed recently for the analysis of the vibrational-rotational spectra of diatomic molecules and their thermodynamic properties exhibit a flaw. One can easily show that the parameters $D_e $ and $r_e$ in those potentials are not the dissociation energy and equilibrium bond length, respectively, as the proposers believe. We show how to overcome the mistake in a simple and quite general way.

On the eigenvalues of the harmonic oscillator with a Gaussian perturbation

We test the analytical expressions for the first two eigenvalues of the harmonic oscillator with a Gaussian perturbation proposed recently. Our numerical eigenvalues show that those expressions are valid in an interval of the coupling parameter that is greater than the one estimated by the authors. We also calculate critical values of the coupling parameter and several exceptional points in the complex plane.

On the normal modes of coupled harmonic oscillators

We discuss in detail a well known method for obtaining the frequencies of the normal modes of coupled harmonic oscillators that is based on the simultaneous diagonalization of two symmetric matrices. We apply it to some simple illustrative examples recently chosen for the presentation of an alternative approach based on a set of constants of the motion. We show that the traditional method is simpler, even in the case of equal frequencies. We also discuss a problem that commonly appears in elementary courses on quantum mechanics that also requires the diagonalization of two symmetric matrices.

On the Rayleigh-Ritz variational method

We give a simple proof of the well known fact that the approximate eigenvalues provided by the Rayleigh-Ritz variational method are increasingly accurate upper bounds to the exact ones. To this end, we resort to the variational principle, mentioned in most textbooks on quantum chemistry, and to a well known set of projection operators. We think that present approach may be suitable for an advanced course on quantum mechanics or quantum chemistry.
