A mixed interpolation-regression method for function approximation on certain planar domains

In this contribution, we introduce a mixed interpolation-regression operator for functions defined on certain planar domains. We focus on an ellipse, an annulus and a polygon. An upper bound for the operator is obtained. Cubature formulas for weight functions defined on these domains are studied. The performance of the interpolation-regression methods is illustrated by numerical examples.

A mixed interpolation-regression method for numerical integration on the unit circle using zeros of para-orthogonal polynomials

A new alternative numerical procedure to the Szegő quadrature formulas for the estimation of integrals with respect to a positive Borel measure $μ$ supported on the unit circle is presented. As in many practical situations, we assume that the values of the integrand $F$ are only known at a finite number of points, which we will assume to be uniformly distributed on the unit circle (although this does not actually constitute a restriction). Our technique consists of obtaining an approximating Laurent polynomial $L$ to $F$ by interpolation in the Hermite sense in a collection of these points that mimic the zeros of a para-orthogonal polynomial with respect to $μ$, and to use the values of $F$ at the remaining nodes to improve the accuracy of the approximation by a process of simultaneous complex regression. Some numerical examples are carried out.

A class of Truncated Freud polynomials

Consider the following truncated Freud linear functional $\mathbf{u}_z$ depending on a parameter $z$, $$\langle\mathbf{u}_z,p\rangle=\int_0^\infty p(x)e^{-zx^4}dx,\quad z>0.$$ The aim of this work is to analyze the properties of the sequence of orthogonal polynomials $(P_n)_{n\geq 0}$ with respect to $\mathbf{u}_z$. Such a linear functional is semiclassical and, as a consequence, we get the system of nonlinear difference equations (Laguerre-Freud equations) that the coefficients of the three-term recurrence satisfy. The asymptotic behavior of such coefficients is given. On the other hand, the raising and lowering operators associated with such a linear functional are obtained, and thus a second-order linear differential equation of holonomic type that $(P_n)_{n\geq 0}$ satisfies is deduced. From this fact, an electrostatic interpretation of their zeros is given. Finally, some illustrative numerical tests concerning the behavior of the least and greatest zeros of these polynomials are presented.

A novel interpolation-regression approach for function approximation on the disk and its application to cubature formulas

The interpolation-regression approximation is a powerful tool in numerical analysis for reconstructing functions defined on square or triangular domains from their evaluations at a regular set of nodes. The importance of this technique lies in its ability to avoid the Runge phenomenon. In this paper, we present a polynomial approximation method based on an interpolation-regression approach for reconstructing functions defined on disk domains from their evaluations at a general set of sampling points. Special attention is devoted to the selection of interpolation nodes to ensure numerical stability, particularly in the context of Zernike polynomials. As an application, the proposed method is used to derive accurate cubature formulas for numerical integration over the disk.

Symmetric Truncated Freud polynomials

We define the family of symmetric truncated Freud polynomials $P_n(x;z)$, orthogonal with respect to the linear functional $\mathbf{u}$ defined by \begin{equation*} \langle \mathbf{u}, p(x)\rangle = \int_{-z}^z p(x)e^{-x^4}dx, \quad p\in \mathbb{P}, \quad z>0. \end{equation*} The semiclassical character of $P_n (x; z)$ as polynomials of class $4$ is stated. As a consequence, several properties of $P_n (x; z)$ concerning the coefficients $γ_n (z)$ in the three-term recurrence relation they satisfy as well as the moments and the Stieltjes function of $\mathbf{u}$ are studied. Ladder operators associated with such a linear functional and the holonomic equation that the polynomials $P_n (x; z)$ satisfy are deduced. Finally, an electrostatic interpretation of the zeros of such polynomials and their dynamics in terms of the parameter $z$ are given.

Constrained mock-Chebyshev least squares approximation for Hermite interpolation

This paper addresses the challenge of function approximation using Hermite interpolation on equally spaced nodes. In this setting, standard polynomial interpolation suffers from the Runge phenomenon. To mitigate this issue, we propose an extension of the constrained mock-Chebyshev least squares approximation technique to Hermite interpolation. This approach leverages both function and derivative evaluations, resulting in more accurate approximations. Numerical experiments are implemented in order to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Dunkl symmetric coherent pairs of measures. An application to Fourier Dunkl-Sobolev expansions

Let $\mathcal{T}_μ$ be the Dunkl operator. A pair of symmetric measures $(u, v)$ supported on a symmetric subset of the real line is said to be a symmetric Dunkl-coherent pair if the corresponding sequences of monic orthogonal polynomials $\{P_n\}_{n\geq 0}$ and $\{R_n\}_{n\geq 0}$ (resp.) satisfy $$ R_{n}(x)=\frac{\mathcal{T}_μP_{n+1} (x)}{μ_{n+1}}-σ_{n-1}\frac{\mathcal{T}_μ P_{n-1}(x)}{μ_{n-1}}, n\geq 2,$$ where $\{σ_n\}_{n\geq1}$ is a sequence of non-zero complex numbers and $μ_{2n}=2n, μ_{2n-1}= 2n-1+ 2μ, n\geq 1.$ In this contribution we focus the attention on the sequence $\{S_n^{(λ,μ)}\}_{n\geq 0}$ of monic orthogonal polynomials with respect to the Dunkl-Sobolev inner product $$ _{s,μ}= +λ , λ>0, \ \ p, \ q \ \in \mathcal{P}.$$ An algorithm is stated to compute the coefficients of the Fourier--Sobolev type expansions with respect to $<. , .>$ for suitable smooth functions $f$ such that $f \in\mathcal{W}_2^1(R, u, v, μ)=\{ f; \ \|f\|_{u}^{2} + λ\| \mathcal{T}_{μ}f\|_{v}^{2} <\infty\}$. Finally, two illustrative numerical examples are presented.

Recovering orthogonality from quasi-nature of Spectral transformations

In this contribution, quasi-orthogonality of polynomials generated by Geronimus and Uvarov transformations is analyzed. An attempt is made to discuss the recovery of the source orthogonal polynomial from the quasi-Geronimus and quasi-Uvarov polynomials of order one. Moreover, the discussion on the difference equation satisfied by quasi-Geronimus and quasi-Uvarov polynomials is presented. Furthermore, the orthogonality of quasi-Geronimus and quasi-Uvarov polynomials is achieved through the reduction of the degree of coefficients in the difference equation. During this procedure, alternative representations of the parameters responsible for achieving orthogonality are derived. One of these representations involves the Stieltjes transform of the measure. Finally, the recurrence coefficients ensuring the existence of a measure that makes the quasi-Geronimus Laguerre polynomial of order one an orthogonal polynomial are calculated.

Generalized Gauss-Rys orthogonal polynomials

Let $(P_n(x;z;λ))_{n\geq 0}$ be the sequence of monic orthogonal polynomials with respect to the symmetric linear functional $\mathbf{s}$ defined by $$\langle\mathbf{s},p\rangle=\int_{-1}^1 p(x)(1-x^2)^{(λ-1/2)} e^{-zx^2}dx,\qquadλ>-1/2, \quad z>0.$$ In this contribution, several properties of the polynomials $P_n(x;z;λ)$ are studied taking into account the relation between the parameters of the three-term recurrence relation that they satisfy. Asymptotic expansions of these coefficients are given. Discrete Painlevé and Painlevé equations associated with such coefficients appear naturally. An electrostatic interpretation of the zeros of such polynomials as well as the dynamics of the zeros in terms of the parameters $z$ and $λ$ are given.

A note on Laguerre truncated polynomials and quadrature formula

In this contribution we deal with Gaussian quadrature rules based on orthogonal polynomials associated with a weight function $w(x)= x^α e^{-x}$ supported on an interval $(0,z)$, $z>0.$ The modified Chebyshev algorithm is used in order to test the accuracy in the computation of the coefficients of the three-term recurrence relation, the zeros and weights, as well as the dependence on the parameter $z.$

Uvarov Perturbations for Matrix Orthogonal Polynomials

Additive perturbations, specifically, matrix Uvarov transformations for matrix orthogonal polynomials, are under consideration. Christoffel-Uvarov formulas are deduced for the perturbed biorthogonal families, along with their matrix norms. These formulations are expressed in terms of the spectral jets of the Christoffel-Darboux kernels.

Symmetrization process and truncated orthogonal polynomials

We define the family of truncated Laguerre polynomials $P_n(x;z)$, orthogonal with respect to the linear functional $\ell$ defined by $$\langle{\ell,p\rangle}=\int_{0}^zp(x)x^αe^{-x}dx,\qquadα>-1.$$ The connection between $P_n(x;z)$ and the polynomials $S_n(x;z)$ (obtained through the symmetrization process) constitutes a key element in our analysis. As a consequence, several properties of the polynomials $P_n(x;z)$ and $S_n(x;z)$ are studied taking into account the relation between the parameters of the three-term recurrence relations that they satisfy. Asymptotic expansions of these coefficients are given. Discrete Painlevé and Painlevé equations associated with such coefficients appear in a natural way. An electrostatic interpretation of the zeros of such polynomials as well as the dynamics of the zeros in terms of the parameter $z$ are given.

Bispectrality for Matrix Laguerre-Sobolev polynomials

In this contribution we deal with sequences of polynomials orthogonal with respect to a Sobolev type inner product. A banded symmetric operator is associated with such a sequence of polynomials according to the higher order difference equation they satisfy. Taking into account the Darboux transformation of the corresponding matrix we deduce the connection with a sequence of orthogonal polynomials associated with a Christoffel perturbation of the measure involved in the standard part of the Sobolev inner product. A connection with matrix orthogonal polynomials is stated. The Laguerre-Sobolev type case is studied as an illustrative example. Finally, the bispectrality of such matrix orthogonal polynomials is pointed out.

Higher-order recurrence relations, Sobolev-type inner products and matrix factorizations

It is well known that Sobolev-type orthogonal polynomials with respect to measures supported on the real line satisfy higher-order recurrence relations and these can be expressed as a (2N+1)-banded symmetric semi-infinite matrix. In this paper we state the connection between these (2N+1)-banded matrices and the Jacobi matrices associated with the three-term recurrence relation satisfied by the standard sequence of orthonormal polynomials with respect to the 2-iterated Christoffel transformation of the measure.

Associated orthogonal polynomials of the first kind and Darboux transformations

Let $\un,$ be a quasi-definite linear functional defined on the space of polynomials $\mathbb{P}.$ For such a functional we can define a sequence of monic orthogonal polynomials (SMOP in short) $(P_n)_{n\geq 0},$ which satisfies a three term recurrence relation. Shifting one unity the recurrence coefficient indices given the sequence of associated polynomials of the first kind which are orthogonal with respect to a linear functional denoted by $\un^{(1)}$. In the literature two special transformations of the functional $\un$ are studied, the canonical Christoffel transformation $\widetilde \un=(x-c)\un$ and the canonical Geronimus transformation $\widehat \un=\frac{\un}{(x-c)}+M\deltan_c$ , where $c$ is a fixed complex number, $M $ is a free parameter and $\deltan_c$ is the linear functional defined on $\mathbb{P}$ as $\prodint{\deltan_c,p(x)}=p(c).$ For the Christoffel transformation with SMOP $(\widetilde P_n)_{n\geq 0}$, we are interested in analyzing the relation between the linear functionals $ \un^{(1)}$ and $\widetilde{\un}^{(1)}.$ There, the super index denotes the linear functionals associated with the orthogonal polynomial sequences of the first kind $(P_n^{(1)})_{n\geq 0}$ and $(\widetilde P_n^{(1)})_{n\geq 0},$ respectively. This problem is also studied for Geronimus transformations. Here we give close relations between their corresponding monic Jacobi matrices by using the LU and UL factorizations. To get this result, we first need to study the relation between $\un^{-1}$ (the inverse functional) and $\un^{(1)}$ which can be expressed from a quadratic Geronimus transformation.

Orthogonality of quasi-orthogonal polynomials

A result of Pólya states that every sequence of quadrature formulas $Q_n(f)$ with $n$ nodes and positive numbers converges to the integral $I(f)$ of a continuous function $f$ provided $Q_n(f)=I(f)$ for a space of algebraic polynomials of certain degree that depends on $n$. The classical case when the algebraic degree of precision is the highest possible is well-known and the quadrature formulas are the Gaussian ones whose nodes coincide with the zeros of the corresponding orthogonal polynomials and the numbers are expressed in terms of the so-called kernel polynomials. In many cases it is reasonable to relax the requirement for the highest possible degree of precision in order to gain the possibility to either approximate integrals of more specific continuous functions that contain a polynomial factor or to include additional fixed nodes. The construction of such quadrature processes is related to quasi-orthogonal polynomials. Given a sequence $\left \{ P_{n}\right \}_{n\geq0}$ of monic orthogonal polynomials and a fixed integer $k$, we establish necessary and sufficient conditions so that the quasi-orthogonal polynomials $\left \{ Q_{n}\right \}_{n\geq0}$ defined by \[ Q_{n}(x) =P_{n}(x) + \sum \limits_{i=1}^{k-1} b_{i,n}P_{n-i}(x), \ \ n\geq 0, \] with $b_{i,n} \in \mathbb{R}$, and $b_{k-1,n}\neq 0$ for $n\geq k-1$, also constitute a sequence of orthogonal polynomials. Therefore we solve the inverse problem for linearly related orthogonal polynomials. The characterization turns out to be equivalent to some nice recurrence formulas for the coefficients $b_{i,n}$. We employ these results to establish explicit relations between various types of quadrature rules from the above relations. A number of illustrative examples are provided.
