Harmonic almost contact structures via the intrinsic torsion

We go further on the study of harmonicity for almost contact metric structures already initiated by Vergara-Diaz and Wood. By using the intrinsic torsion, we characterise harmonic almost contact metric structures in several equivalent ways and show conditions relating harmonicity and classes of almost contact metric structures. Additionally, we study the harmonicity of such structures as a map into the quotient bundle of the oriented orthonormal frames by the action of the structural group U(n)x1. Finally, by using a Bochner type formula proved by Bor and Hernandez Lamoneda, we display some examples which give the absolute minimum for the energy.

Curvature of almost quaternion-Hermitian manifolds

We study the decomposition of the Riemannian curvature R tensor of an almost quaternion-Hermitian manifold under the action of its structure group Sp(n)Sp(1). Using the minimal connection, we show that most components are determined by the intrinsic torsion ξand its covariant derivative \widetilde\nablaξand determine relations between the decompositions of ξ\otimesξ, \widetilde\nablaξand R. We pay particular attention to the behaviour of the Ricci curvature and the q-Ricci curvature.

The intrinsic torsion of almost quaternion-Hermitian manifolds

We study the intrinsic torsion of almost quaternion-Hermitian manifolds via the exterior algebra. In particular, we show how it is determined by particular three-forms formed from simple combinations of the exterior derivatives of the local Kaehler forms. This gives a practical method to compute the intrinsic torsion and is applied in a number of examples. In addition we find simple characterisations of HKT and QKT geometries entirely in the exterior algebra and compute how the intrinsic torsion changes under a twist construction.

Almost Quaternion-Hermitian Manifolds

Following the point of view of Gray and Hervella, we derive detailed conditions which characterize each one of the classes of almost quaternion-Hermitian $4n$-manifolds, $n>1$. Previously, by completing a basic result of A. Swann, we give explicit descriptions of the tensors contained in the space of covariant derivatives of the fundamental form $Ω$ and split the coderivative of $Ω$ into its ${\sl Sp}(n){\sl Sp}(1)$-components. For $4n>8$, A. Swann also proved that all the information about the intrinsic torsion $\nabla Ω$ is contained in the exterior derivative ${\sl d} Ω$. Thus, we give alternative conditions, expressed in terms of ${\sl d} Ω$, to characterize the different classes of almost quaternion-Hermitian manifolds.

SU(3)-structures on hypersurfaces of manifolds with G_2-structure

We study SU(3)-structures induced on orientable hypersurfaces of seven-dimensional manifolds with G_2-structure. Taking Gray-Hervella types for both structures into account, we relate the type of SU(3)-structure and the type of G_2-structure with the shape tensor of the hypersurface. Additionaly, we show how to compute the intrinsic SU(3)-torsion and the intrinsic G_2-torsion by means of exterior algebra.

Special almost Hermitian geometry

We study the classification of special almost hermitian manifolds in Gray and Hervella's type classes. We prove that the exterior derivatives of the symplectic form and the complex volume form contain all the information about the intrinsic torsion of the $\SUn(n)$-structure. Furthermore, we apply the obtained results to almost hyperhermitian geometry. Thus, we show that the exterior derivatives of the three K{ä}hler forms of an almost hyperhermitian manifold are sufficient to determine the three covariant derivatives of such forms, i.e., the three mentioned exterior derivatives determine the intrinsic torsion of the ${\sl Sp}(n)$-structure.

Curvature of (special) almost Hermitian manifolds

We study the curvature of almost Hermitian manifolds and their special analogues via intrinsic torsion and representation theory. By deriving different forumlae for the skew-symmetric part of the star-Ricci curvature, we find that some of these contributions are dependent on the approach used, and for the almost Hermitian case we obtain tables that differ from those of Falcitelli, Farinola and Salamon. We show how the exterior algebra may used to explain some of these variations.

Almost Hermitian Structures and Quaternionic Geometries

Gray & Hervella gave a classification of almost Hermitian structures (g,I) into 16 classes. We systematically study the interaction between these classes when one has an almost hyper-Hermitian structure (g,I,J,K). In general dimension we find at most 167 different almost hyper-Hermitian structures. In particular, we obtain a number of relations that give hyperKäher or locally conformal hyperKähler structures, thus generalising a result of Hitchin. We also study the types of almost quaternion-Hermitian geometries that arise and tabulate the results.
