Non-Abelian Yang-Mills-Higgs vortices

In this Letter we present new, genuinely non-Abelian vortex solutions in SU(2) Yang-Mills--Higgs theory with only one {\it isovector} scalar field. These non-Abelian solutions branch off their Abelian counterparts (Abrikosov-Nielsen-Olesen vortices) for precise values of the Higgs potential coupling constant $λ$. For all values of $λ$, their energies lie below those of the Abelian energy profiles, the latter being logarithmically divergent as $λ\to\infty$. The non-Abelian branches plateau in the limit $λ\to\infty$ and their number increases with $λ$, this number becoming infinite. For each vorticity, the gaps between the plateauing energy levels become constant. In this limit the non-Abelian vortices are non-interacting and are described by the {\it self-dual} vortices of the O(3) sigma model. In the absence of a topological lower bound, we expect these non-Abelian vortices to be {\it sphalerons}.

Extremal Charged Rotating Black Holes in Odd Dimensions

Employing higher order perturbation theory, we obtain charged rotating black holes in odd dimensions, where the Einstein-Maxwell Lagrangian may be supplemented with a Chern-Simons term. Starting from the Myers-Perry solutions, we use the electric charge as the perturbative parameter, and focus on extremal black holes with equal-magnitude angular momenta. For Einstein-Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory with arbitrary Chern-Simons coupling constant, we perform the perturbations up to third order for any odd dimension. We discuss the physical properties of these black holes and study their dependence on the charge. In particular, we show that the gyromagnetic ratio $g$ of Einstein-Maxwell black holes differs from the lowest order perturbative value $D-2$, and that the first correction term to $g/(D-2)$ is universal.

Non Abelian Chern-Simons-Higgs solutions in (2+1) dimensions

Non Abelian vortices of a SU(2) Chern-Simons--Higgs theory in 2+1 dimensions are constructed numerically. They represent natural counterparts of the U(1) solutions considered by Hong, Kim and Pac, and, by Jackiw and Weinberg. The Abelian embeddings are identified, for all values of the Higgs selfinteraction strength $ν$, resulting in both attractive and repulsive phases. A detailed analysis of the properties of the solutions reveals the existence ofa number of unexpected features. For a certain range of the parameter $ν$, it is shown that the non Abelian vortices have lower energy than their topologically stable Abelian counterparts, resulting in an effective energy lower bound on the SU(2) configurations. The angular momentum of these vortices is analysed and it is found that unlike the Abelian ones, whose angular momentum and energy are unrelated, there is a nontrivial mass--spin relation of the non Abelian vortices.

Rotating Black Holes in Higher Dimensions

The properties of higher-dimensional black holes can differ significantly from those of black holes in four dimensions, since neither the uniqueness theorem, nor the staticity theorem or the topological censorship theorem generalize to higher dimensions. We first discuss black holes of Einstein-Maxwell theory and Einstein-Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory with spherical horizon topology. Here new types of stationary black holes are encountered. We then discuss nonuniform black strings and present evidence for a horizon topology changing transition.

Perturbative Charged Rotating 5D Einstein-Maxwell Black Holes

We present perturbative charged rotating 5D Einstein-Maxwell black holes with spherical horizon topology. The electric charge Q is the perturbative parameter, the perturbations being performed up to 4th order. The expressions for the relevant physical properties of these black holes are given. The gyromagnetic ratio g, in particular, is explicitly shown to be non-constant in higher order, and thus to deviate from its lowest order value, g=3. Comparison of the perturbative analytical solutions with their non-perturbative numerical counterparts shows remarkable agreement.

Non-uniqueness, Counterrotation, and Negative Horizon Mass of Einstein-Maxwell-Chern-Simons Black Holes

Stationary black holes in 5-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory possess surprising properties. When considering the Chern-Simons coefficient $λ$ as a parameter, two critical values of $λ$ appear: the supergravity value $λ_{\rm SG}=1$, and the value $λ=2$. At $λ=1$, supersymmetric black holes with vanishing horizon angular velocity, but finite angular momentum exist. As $λ$ increases beyond $λ_{\rm SG}$ a rotational instability arises, and counterrotating black holes appear, whose horizon rotates in the opposite sense to the angular momentum. Thus supersymmetry is associated with the borderline between stability and instability. At $λ=2$ rotating black holes with vanishing angular momentum emerge. Beyond $λ=2$ black holes may possess a negative horizon mass, while their total mass is positive. Charged rotating black holes with vanishing gyromagnetic ratio appear, and black holes are no longer uniquely characterized by their global charges.

Negative Horizon Mass for Rotating Black Holes

Charged rotating black holes of Einstein-Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory in odd dimensions, $D \ge 5$, may possess a negative horizon mass, while their total mass is positive. This surprising feature is related to the existence of counterrotating solutions, where the horizon angular velocity $Ω$ and the angular momentum $J$ possess opposite signs. Black holes may further possess vanishing horizon angular velocity while they have finite angular momentum, or they may possess finite horizon angular velocity while their angular momentum vanishes. In D=9 even non-static black holes with $Ω=J=0$ appear. Charged rotating black holes with vanishing gyromagnetic ratio exist, and black holes need no longer be uniquely characterized by their global charges.

Rotating Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton Black Holes in D Dimensions

We construct exact charged rotating black holes in Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory in $D$ spacetime dimensions, $D \ge 5$, by embedding the $D$ dimensional Myers-Perry solutions in $D+1$ dimensions, and performing a boost with a subsequent Kaluza-Klein reduction. Like the Myers-Perry solutions, these black holes generically possess $N=[(D-1)/2]$ independent angular momenta. We present the global and horizon properties of these black holes, and discuss their domains of existence.

Charged Rotating Black Holes in Odd Dimensions

We consider charged rotating black holes in $D=2N+1$ dimensions, $D \ge 5$. While these black holes generically possess $N$ independent angular momenta, associated with $N$ distinct planes of rotation, we here focus on black holes with equal-magnitude angular momenta. The angular dependence can then be treated explicitly, and a system of 5 $D$-dependent ordinary differential equations is obtained. We solve these equations numerically for Einstein-Maxwell theory in D=5, 7 and 9 dimensions. We discuss the global and horizon properties of these black holes, as well as their extremal limits.

D=5 Einstein-Maxwell-Chern-Simons Black Holes

5-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory with Chern-Simons coefficient $λ=1$ has supersymmetric black holes with vanishing horizon angular velocity, but finite angular momentum. Here supersymmetry is associated with a borderline between stability and instability, since for $λ>1$ a rotational instability arises, where counterrotating black holes appear, whose horizon rotates in the opposite sense to the angular momentum. For $λ>2$ black holes are no longer uniquely characterized by their global charges, and rotating black holes with vanishing angular momentum appear.

Five-Dimensional Charged Rotating Black Holes

We consider charged rotating black holes in 5-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell theory. These black holes are asymptotically flat, they possess a regular horizon of spherical topology and two independent angular momenta associated with two distinct planes of rotation. We discuss their global and horizon properties, and derive a generalized Smarr formula. We construct these black holes numerically, focussing on black holes with a single angular momentum, and with two equal-magnitude angular momenta.
